The Emily Osment-starring multi-camera comedy Pretty Smart will not be returning to Netflix for a second season, according to TVLine. Created by Jack Dolgen and Doug Mand, the series revolves around Chelsea (Osment), a Harvard-educated, aspiring novelist who moves in with her bubbly and not-so-intellectual sister Claire (Olivia Macklin) after being dumped by her boyfriend. The tough and sometimes stand-offish Chelsea soon finds herself dealing with her carefree sister and her three lovably eccentric roommates. In addition to Osment and Macklin, the cast also included Gregg Sulkin (Faking It) as the distractingly handsome personal trainer Grant, Cinthya Carmona (Greenhouse Academy) as former lawyer turned healer Solana, and Michael Hsu Rosen (Tiny Pretty Things) as social media influencer Jayden. Osment started out as a child actress, co-starring as Gerti Giggles in the Spy Kids sequel movies. She is perhaps best known for playing Lilly Truscott in the Disney Channel television series Hannah Montana.

Netflix’s new comedy series Pretty Smart is really only one of those things.
The sitcom’s 10-episode first season stars Emily Osment (Young & Hungry) as Chelsea, a “smart” girl whose life is turned upside down during a three-day visit with her “pretty” sister Claire, played by Olivia Macklin (Filthy Rich). If you’ve already managed to unravel the meaning behind the show’s title, congratulations, it’s incredibly high-concept.

Pretty Smart is not your average silly sitcom, according to the Netflix comedy's stars. The new series, which dropped on the streamer on Oct. 8, follows scholar Chelsea (Emily Osment) as she moves into her free-spirited sister Claire's (Olivia Macklin) house, joining influencer Jayden (Michael Hsu Rosen), healer Solana (Cinthya Carmona) and personal trainer Grant (Gregg Sulkin). Initially, this situation feels like a personal circle of hell for Chelsea, but, over time, she soon realizes that there's more to these stereotypical Los Angeles residents. In fact, as Osment told E! News in an exclusive interview, her character learns a thing or two from this sunny bunch. "I think...

It’s the summer of 2013 and spray cans rattle as Reefa (Tyler Dean Flores), an ambitious, 18-year-old graffiti artist, paints his signature symbol — an eye surrounded by flower petals — illegally on a wall in his suburban Miami neighborhood. Later his father (José Zúñiga) a Colombian immigrant nervously awaiting the arrival of the family’s green cards, discovers it, and forces Reefa to whitewash over it before the authorities arrive. Prickling with adolescent resentment, the young man does so, and inadvertently supplies Jessica Kavana Dornbusch’s true-story biopic with an unfortunate parallel: “Reefa,” based on an enraging, heartbreaking real-life event, paints over the colors, creativity and chaos of its true-life tragedy with layers of film-convention formula.
Reefa is a good-looking skateboarder, cocksure about his artistic talent and eager to break into Miami’s tagging scene prior to moving to New York — the erstwhile home of his heroes Basquiat, Warhol and Haring — to attend art school.

When he spray paints one last wall with art that will earn him great respect with his peers, an encounter with a police officer leaves everyone devastated, the Miami community outraged, and the nation reeling from yet another case of police brutality. There are several constants that you find in a David Ayer movie. He loves to explore the world of crime, as well as the thin lines of good and evil that exist within the criminal underworld. The same goes for when he’s focusing on cops. We’ve seen Ayer’s best with End of Watch and Fury (plus his script for Training Day), as well as his worst with Suicide Squad (even if that wasn’t completely his fault). His newest outing, The Tax Collector, has several elements of good Ayer, as well as bad Ayer. The end result is a frustrating experience that hints at his talents but manages to let you down. The film is a mix of crime drama and action outing, more or less what you’d come to expect from this particular storyteller. David Cuevas (Bobby Soto) is a family man, first and foremost,...

You wouldn’t know it from the marketing campaign, but Shia Labeouf is not the star of “The Tax Collector.” And for once, the actor isn’t the most interesting thing about a film he’s involved with — this despite the fact that he’s attracted a lot of press over getting his chest tattooed for the part. Ironically, there’s just one scene — our last view of Labeouf — in which audiences can spot the ink. Otherwise, “Creeper” (a nickname now permanently inked on his abdomen) comes across more menacing in the neatly pressed oxford shirt, necktie and banker’s vest he wears for most of .

Shia Labeouf can give complex, transportive performances, with rough and edgy bursts of messy antics slathered on top of soul. Sadly, “The Tax Collector” is not “American Honey.” In writer-director David Ayer’s bland L.A. crime saga about a pair of drug lord minions caught in the crosshairs of a larger war, Labeouf stares and struts his way through a cartoonish and culturally insensitive performance as a troublemaking thug named Creeper that most certainly did not require him to get his character’s name tattooed across his chest.
If the two-bit Latino burlesque was the only problem with “The Tax Collector,” it would have to work overtime to make up for it. Yet even when “The Tax Collector” finds a steadier purpose as a taut revenge thriller, it’s mostly just a slog of vulgar threats and violent outbursts, trading substance for anger until the credits bring some measure of peace.

Accurate multicultural representation in Hollywood starts crucially with hiring communities of color to make and star in films, “Suicide Squad” and “Bright” director David Ayer said Thursday at the ArcLight drive-in premiere of his new Los Angeles-based crime drama, “The Tax Collector.”
“Hire them. Hire them for jobs,” Ayer said when asked about increasing Latino representation in Hollywood productions. “People take care of people, give them jobs and give them their voice.”
“The Tax Collector” has a mostly Latinx cast, led by Bobby Soto, Cinthya Carmona, George Lopez, Lana Parrilla, Chelsea Rendon and Jose “Conejo” Martin.
Ayer, who has written and directed several South L.A.-set films, including “End of Watch,” “Training Day” and “Harsh Times,” said, “I always grew up around Chicanos. Where is the f—ing Hollywood Chicano superstar?”

The Tax Collector, despite its title, is not a Hallmark channel drama about a lovelorn IRS agent, which the just-released trailer makes abundantly clear. Indeed, the film, an intense crime drama from Suicide Squad director David Ayer, is a Southern California-set tragedy with quite the ace in its hole with a maniacally unhinged performance by Shia Labeouf.
Ayer, best known for the aforementioned Dceu outing, along with Will-Smith-starring (and sequel-set) Netflix feature Bright and Brad Pitt-headlined WWII epic Fury, makes a thematic reprisal of sorts with written/directorial offering The Tax Collector, which returns him to the wheelhouse of his earlier urban-action efforts like Street Kings, End of the Watch and Sabotage. In this case, Ayer depicts the dilemma of a So-Cal man who, for the sake of his family, attempts to escape his gang’s reach; an endeavor that will put him in some serious cross-hairs.

"I'm supposed to terrorize the hard! That's my function." Rlje has released the first trailer for The Tax Collector, a crime thriller from gritty filmmaker David Ayer. This one is skipping theaters entirely and dropping direct-to-vod in August this summer. The film follows two "tax collectors" for the crime lord "Wizard", collecting cuts from local gangs. But when Wizard's old rival returns to Los Angeles from Mexico, the business is upended making them targets, so they must protect their family above all else. Starring Bobby Soto, Cinthya Carmona, George Lopez, Steve Louis Villegas, Lana Parrilla, and Shia Labeouf. Always with masks in every crime film! After big budget critical misfires “Suicide Squad” and “Bright,” writer-director David Ayer is returning to his scrappy and bloody crime drama roots in the upcoming “The Tax Collector.” Rlje Films is releasing the movie in August, two years after Ayer wrapped filming on the movie in summer 2018. “The Tax Collector” reunites the filmmaker with his “Fury” actor Shia Labeouf, who is coming off a resurgent 2019 thanks to well-received indies “Honey Boy” and “The Peanut Butter Falcon.” Labeouf stars in Ayer’s latest opposite Bobby Soto, Cinthya Carmona, and George Lopez.
