Sydney Sweeney‘s second film of 2024 is finally here, let’s hope that it doesn’t turn into a disaster like the first one. Produced by Sweeney herself, Immaculate is a psychological horror film and it follows the story of a young nun who joins a convent in the Italian countryside. Her quiet life quickly turns into a nightmare because of the horrific secrets hidden in the convent. Directed by Michael Mohan, Immaculate also stars Simona Tabasco, Benedetta Porcaroli, and Álvaro Morte. So, if you loved Sweeney’s horror film here are some similar movies you should check out next.
The Convent
Co-written and directed by Paul Hyett, the 2018 film British horror film titled The Convent gives a similar atmosphere to Sweeney’s Immaculate. The Convent tells us the story of a group of young women seeking refuge from the turmoil of World War II in an isolated convent in the countryside.

To celebrate the release of Peripheral, which is out now in the UK on select digital services, we sat down with the film’s star Hannah Arterton to uncover the secrets of this new sci-fi mind-bender.
We all have a differing opinion of technology and our relationships with devices, the internet and beyond, and director Paul Hyett’s new film looks deep into the divisive nature of it all with this twisty, tense, and prevalent new film. Arterton plays Bobbi, a writer who is about to start her second book after the first caused shockwaves through the nation, even inciting riots. Faced with “second-album syndrome”, her publishers offer her help in the form of a cutting-edge editing system that will help her crack the code.
However, with such tools means less control and Arterton chatted to us about the film’s look at loneliness and isolation – something we can all...

Ahead of the digital release, on August 3rd, of his latest film Peripheral, director Paul Hyett talks about the importance of creative freedom, the lockdown and future projects…
Peripheral is your fourth feature as director. When you started on The Seasoning House back in 2011, did you ever imagine your career would be this successful?
Back when I decided I wanted to make my own movie I had my prosthetics company and was doing very well, but I really wanted to tell my own stories. I said to myself, get The Seasoning House made, see if it’s any good. If it’s a success then I would close my workshop and concentrate on directing. When it was selected as opening film for FrightFest 2012, I was elated and decided to go that path. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have directed four films and never would have thought that would happen.

Sometimes, filmmakers look to use horror as a means to make us confront the things that we fear in society and in ourselves. Other times, they just want to throw some blood and scares at us to see if they can make us squirm. It only takes a few minutes of Paul Hyett’s The Convent to realize that he’s going for the latter, and that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing.
The titular convent is a 17th century home to an order of nuns, where lost soul Persephone (Hannah Arterton) has landed after narrowly escaping being burned as a witch. Her savior, the Reverend Mother (Clare Higgins), convinces the local magistrate that she can redeem Persephone’s soul if given the chance. But Persephone soon learns that the road to redemption in this house is paved with emotional and physical abuse. To make matters worse,...

I’ve got a freaky little trailer here for a new supernatural horror thriller called The Convent and the story is set in the 17th century during a time when being a witch was frowned upon.
This movie tells the story of a young woman who is falsely accused of being a witch and sent to be executed. However, she is saved from the execution and taken to a priory to repent her sins. While she is there, she discovers that something more sinister and evil is lurking there.
The main character, Persephone (Hannah Arterton) starts having horrific visions and she realizes that she won’t find salvation among the nuns because at this convent, nuns can’t be saved. They’re all evil!

Vertical Entertainment has unveiled the trailer for “The Convent,” which seeks to answer an age-old question: How many horror movies about nuns does America have room in its heart for? Continuing a trend reignited by last year’s “The Conjuring” spinoff “The Nun” and dating back to the likes of “To the Devil a Daughter” and “Mother Joan of the Angels,” Paul Hyett’s film is very much back in the habit. Watch the trailer below.

Hannah Arterton plays an author whose life is turned upside down by a computer in Peripheral

What first attracted you to actor Gregory Blair’s script?
When Templeheart gave me the script of Heretiks (although it was a different title at the time), the one thing that really grabbed my interest was the opportunity to do a creepy period horror, set in 17th Century England. I’d already shot a war-set film, a contemporary werewolf film and here was an opportunity to do a film set in the 17th century where young girls were put on trial for witchcraft, of which some were drowned, hanged and so much worse. It was a truly dark and fearful time in the history of England, one that I was keen to portray on screen, and adding to that a supernatural element, was hard to resist.
What did you and your Seasoning House co-writer Conal Palmer bring to the final screenplay?
Conal and I did an extensive rewrite, as I remember,...

As if the lineup for Arrow Video FrightFest 2018 wasn't impressive enough, the festival has added two films to its slate: David Barker's Pimped (touted as an erotic thriller with a touch of Hitchcock and Brian De Palma appeal) and screenings of the restoration of John Carpenter's classic Halloween! The guest lineup includes Barbara Crampton, Leigh Whannell, Shaked Berenson (Tales of Halloween), Issa López (Tigers are not Afraid), composer Fabio Frizzi, and many more!

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Safe” Season 1 on Netflix, including the ending.]
There isn’t likely to be a “Safe” Season 2, and anyone who’s finished the first season knows why.
Still, in an age of inexplicable renewals and extended limited series, it never hurts to have confirmation, and creator Harlan Coben provided as much as he could — on screen and off. In an interview with Digital Spy that emphasized all the answers to the Netflix murder-mystery were in Season 1, Coben said he wouldn’t “rule out” a Season 2, but later added he doubts it will ever happen.
That’s pretty emphatic as far as creator speculation goes, and Coben speaks even more clearly via the final episode: As a soapy, twist-driven mystery, “Safe” is all wrapped up. Rather than throw in a last-second reveal that upended the answers that had been building over the last few episodes, Coben chose to structure his project as eight episodes and out.

With a pedigree that includes Six Feet Under and Dexter, Michael C. Hall has never retreated from risky projects, but his new series Safe certainly would never be characterized in that way. A case of honesty in advertising if nothing else, the UK-set Netflix series that launches May 10 is almost entirely without distinction except in how by the book it mostly is. Clearly coming out of the streaming service’s algorithm and the desire to snare an obvious talent like Hall, the series’ risk-averse approach ultimately offers few rewards in today’s intensely competitive television landscape.
Let me be clear: It’s not that the eight-episode tale of a teen gone missing from an affluent gated community — and the subsequent search and revelations by her widowed pediatric surgeon father, played by Hall — is bad. Rather, the problem with Safe, as I say in my video review above, is that it plays things so safe,...

We have a wonderful culture of excellent female British detectives on British television, ranging from the likes of Prime Suspect to Miss Marple, or more recently with Broadchurch and Line of Duty – and now we can add Harlan Coben’s Safe to that list, which launches on Netflix on May 10th.
Hannah Arterton, alongside Amanda Abbington, is bestowed such a role and we had the pleasure of interviewing the former to mark the launch of this exciting new series. She tells us what attracted her to the project, and how much fun it is for actors to get their teeth stuck into a role that allows so much room for development.
She also discusses what it’s been like portraying a detective on screen, and recalls her own experiences reading the script for the first time, as a show that leaves you wanting more with every passing episode. She talks...

Netflix has released the first trailer for an upcoming new crime thriller called Safe. The series stars Michael C. Hall and he plays a widowed surgeon named Tom Delaney, whose daughter goes missing. The story follows his journey as he goes out looking for her and in the process "begins unearthing dark secrets about the people closest to him in a wealthy gated community."
The series was created by best-selling novelist Harlan Coben (the “Myron Bolitar” novel series) with a screenplay by Danny Brocklehurst. The series also stars Amanda Abbington, Audrey Fleurot, Hannah Arterton, Emmett J. Scanlan, Marc Warren, Nigel Lindsay and Laila Rouass.
I like Michael C. Hall and I've enjoyed the shows that he's made so I'll definitely be checking this new series out. Check out the trailer and let us know if you'll be giving it a shot!

Paul Hyett, director of Howl and The Seasoning House, has begun principal photography on the chilling supernatural horror film Heretiks for Templeheart Films, EnMar Productions, Red Rock Entertainment and Sterling Pictures.
Set during the 17th Century, Heretiks sees a young woman saved from execution and led to a priory to repent her sins… but discovers a greater evil lies within. Michael Ironside (Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Scanners), three-time Olivier winner Clare Higgins (Hellraiser, Hellbound, The Golden Compass) and Hannah Arterton (Walking On Sunshine) star in this atmospheric horror/chiller currently shooting in Wales.

Films like Walking on Sunshine make you think al-Qaeda might have a point after all. Like anybody else, I’ve got serious problems with the basic tenets of Islamic Fundamentalism, but it’s got to be better than this. Produced with a cynical eye towards snaring World Cup widows, this 80s jukebox musical is a stunningly accurate simulation of being manacled to a chair in a dodgy karaoke bar and forced to watch a bunch of jerks tunelessly disembowel pop standards.

UK, 2014
The dream of an abundance of love and sex and friendship is probably familiar to all of us, however conflicted it is with the ideology of a soulmate, the special and romantic idea of two starry-eyed lovers locked in a close embrace. While the majority of the Western narratives seems to adhere to the dream of the happily ever after, Hide and Seek offers a different view of love, seeking to mythologize a polyamorous union instead.
Coming from a first-feature British director and winner of the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Hide and Seek presents us with four young adults from London, Max, Charlotte, Leah and Jack, who, though complete strangers to each other, decide to experiment with polyamory. They draw up schedules of partner-swapping including...

Let's get one thing out of the way from the off. Walking on Sunshine, a jukebox musical featuring all your favourite pop hits from the '80s, can in no way be recommended to anyone under the guise of being "a good movie". The story ticks off every rom-com cliché in the book, the characters have all the appeal of third-degree sunburn, the acting frequently hits pantomime levels and the production values on both the recorded tracks and song and dance numbers leave something to be desired.
Yes, Walking on Sunshine really does make Mamma Mia! look like Citizen Kane. And yet, despite all this, you can't take your eyes off it for a second. One thing you can't accuse this film of is lacking in car-crash entertainment value.

Jukebox 1980s musical that tells the story of Maddie (Annabel Scholey), who is preparing to marry gorgeous Italian Raf (Giulio Berruti), and has invited her sister Taylor (Hannah Arterton, Gemma's sister) to the wedding in Puglia. Unbeknown to Maddie, however, Raf is Taylor's ex-holiday flame, and the love of her life... Factor in Greg Wise as Maddie's caddish ex and you have a sun-kissed romp that rolls along with the help of ditties including Don't You Want Me and Girls Just Want To Have Fun.

This weekend Hannah Arterton makes her film debut in Walking on Sunshine, a sunny, 1980s-pop-soaked musical that is aiming to be this summer's Mamma Mia!. It will be followed in the autumn by Made in Dagenham, a big-budget West End show from the people behind Jerry Springer: The Opera and Enron, which will star Gemma Arterton.
