The busy platform – in Cannes with five films in the festival – has paid approximately $3.5m for North American rights to Lynne Ramsay’s upcoming thriller.
Joaquin Phoenix will play a damaged war veteran, now a freelance rescuer of women trafficked into the sex trade.
When the extraction of a girl from a Manhattan brothel goes wrong, a storm of violence and corrupt power is unleashed against him, stirring a vengeance that may be his awakening.
Ramsay will direct You Were Never Really Here from her adapted screenplay of a novella by Jonathan Ames, who created the HBO show Bored To Death.
Insiders introduced the project to Croisette buyers last week and represents international rights excluding the UK and France, which Why Not Productions handles.
The UK’s Film4 and British Film Institute supported development of the project. Pascal Caucheteux, Rosa Attab and James Wilson are producing for Why Not Productions with Page 114 on board as co-producer.

David James Wilson/Insane Championship Wrestling
It’s unusual for things to be written from a purely first person perspective on WhatCulture.com, but I perform as the manager ‘James R. Kennedy’ for Insane Championship Wrestling.
My character – one of a wealthy background who uses that money to hurt others – is influenced by all the greats, from Bobby ‘The Brain Heenan and Jim Cornette, to Paul Heyman and J.J Dillon. Obviously, I have a long way to go before I even deserve to be mentioned alongside those men, but they were the inspiration for causing me to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a wrestling manager.
Throughout my time in Icw, I’ve been lucky enough to work with some unbelievable talents. Many of these men have wrestled across the globe, and their wealth of experience has been eye-opening for me. As any manager knows however, the very position...

Manchester United’s hopes of signing Mats Hummels appear to be over after manager Louis van Gaal conceded the Borussia Dortmund defender is likely to be unavailable for the next two transfer windows, according to the Telegraph. United were liked with Hummels for much of the summer, but nothing materialised on deadline day this week.
And any hope van Gaal may have held of signing the centre-back in the January transfer window appears unlikely at best, while the Germany World Cup winner may not even be available next summer, either. United were frustrated in their attempts to sign Hummels over the last few months, and with the player under contract at Signal Iduna Park until July 2017, know it will not be easy for them to strike a deal in the near future.
With Dortmund having already sold a number of their star players recently,...

Psst: The Fourth of July isn’t really about crazy fireworks displays, or eating a record-breaking 69 hot dogs in just 10 minutes, or those layered American flag cakes that look so gorgeous on Pinterest but are physically impossible to reproduce Irl.

You could honor them by comparing bifocals with a Benjamin Franklin impersonator, or perhaps wearing a powdered wig to the beach. By my money, though, there’s no better way...
