Documentaries are known for their potential to affect social change, but at what point does a cause begin to dictate the way a story is told?
The place of impact producing in factual content was referenced at multiple points throughout this week’s Australian International Documentary Conference (Aidc), most notably as part of a session entitled ‘Is Impact Still Relevant?’.
The reflective discussion brought together Engage Media co-founder and executive director Andrew Lowenthal, with Hollie Fifer, director of the investigative documentary The Opposition.
At the centre of their conversation was the role of ‘impact’ as an advocacy tool and its influence on the filmmaking process.
Lowenthal’s company is in the midst of exploring the concept with filmmakers across the Asia Pacific as part of an Impact Lab for environmental video initiatives.
He said while still relevant, the genre had been around long enough to allow a discussion about where it can fall short.

In a single, extraordinary day more than $2 million in donations was pledged to seven Australian feature-length documentaries on Wednesday.
The scale of the financial support stunned the organisers of the first Good Pitch Australia event, which aids social impact documentaries.
Equally surprised were the recipients. .I am speechless,. said producer Marguerite Grey, who is collaborating with director Belinda Mason on Constance on the Edge, which looks at the struggles of a Sudanese refugee, Constance Okot, and her six children in Wagga Wagga.
The docu was the biggest single recipient with pledges of more than $500,000 for the production and an initial outreach strategy which includes hosted regional film screenings and education and training resources.
Screen Australia provided $15,000 for research and development in March and in September Screen Nsw gave $10,000 for filming a trailer for Good Pitch and for broadcasters to help secure project finance.
However the ABC and Sbs rejected the producer's initial requests for investment,...

As Max Bell noted in his round-up of L.A. rap earlier this month, it was a very good year for hip-hop in our city, with all corners of the varied scene -- from Open Mike Eagle's smart 4Nml Hsptl to Odd Future's rambunctious The Of Tape Vol. 2 to Ty$ and Joe Moses' raunchy Whoop! -- well represented. Oh, and then there was a certain South Central-based collective you may have heard of. In any case, since we like to play favorites, here are our top five.
