Melissa Joan Hart is addressing all of the talk about her latest role.
Back in October, Lifetime release the movie Would You Kill For Me: The Mary Bailey Story in which the 47-year-old Sabrina the Teenage Witch actress plays Ella, the grandmother of Mary (Presley Allard) and mother of Veronica (Olivia Scriven). The character of Mary is said to be only 11, while the character Veronica was 16 when she gave birth to her daughter.
Now months after it was released, the movie is going viral with fans freaking out that Melissa played a grandmother.

“There is no way Melissa Joan Hart is old enough to play anybody’s grandmother on television, let alone children who can form full sentences, and are two lessons away from passing a driver’s license test. Pls,” one person tweeted.

Melissa Joan Hart is a grandma! Well, sort of. In a perhaps telling sign of the industry’s idea of roles women of a certain age should be playing, the actress recently portrayed a grandmother in the Lifetime movie Would You Kill for Me: The Mary Bailey Story. Explain that!
Considering Melissa Joan Hart will forever be a teenage witch to many of us, it is a bit jarring to find her being cast in the role. But it’s not just that our memories can’t mathematically fathom Hart, now 47(!), playing a grandmother, it’s that it feels like further proof that the movie and TV business has no idea what to do with women after they’re “over the hill.” Admittedly, The Mary Bailey Story is based on a true story and the figures are indeed young, but it still feels like it plays into the topic as a whole.

"Here we are - Day 2 of the apocalypse." Red Owl Film has revealed a promo trailer for a post-apocalyptic comedy called Skal, from filmmaker Benjamin Cappelletti. This is a Canadian production, however, "skål" is actually a Scandinavian word for toasting - kind of like saying "cheers" in English. The full title is Skal - Fight for Survival and the film is being sold at the European Film Market (EFM). What is it about? Well, apparently it follows a video blogger / online "content creator" who decides to vlog the apocalypse when it hits. More social media satire. "I am Arthur, I am an online creator/comedy artist and I just hit 3 millions subs on my channel, but when all the water on the planet disappears over night, my hangover turns into an epic fight for survival." Starring Evan Marsh as Arthur, Darren Eisenhauer, Trevor Hayes, Mariah Inger, and Olivia Scriven. This looks like low budget,...

When Daily Dead announced that April was to be Indie Horror Month, I was psyched to finally have a chance to geek out about Blood Quantum. This is a fantastic movie that came out a couple of years back, but for whatever reason has sort of managed to stay out of the public eye. Which sucks, because this movie is fantastic, and we should all be watching it.
So I queued it up on Shudder and was astounded to see that this movie was dated 2020. Because the last year has been lost to an endless time vortex and I legit thought that this movie was at least two years old. But whatever! It’s still great and everyone still needs to see it, so here we are!

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Elevation Pictures. Director/writer: Jeff Barnaby. Cast: Michael Greyeyes, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Forrest Goodluck, Kiowa Gordon and Olivia Scriven. Blood Quantum is a Canadian shot feature from a Canadian director, Jeff Barnaby (Rhymes with Ghouls). The film was shot in the province of Quebec, with help from Telefilm Canada. A film that focuses on Canadian Native issues, Blood Quantum has a unique tale to tell. Told partially with aid from Barnaby and Joe Barrucco's musical score, this feature also offers up a bit of gore, for horror fans. A chainsaw is always handy in a zombie apocalypse. As well, the story focuses on two brothers: Joseph (Forrest Goodluck) and Lysol (Kiowa Gordon), in relationship to their father. One turns into the bad son, while the other struggles to handle his growing family. As the credits roll, most horror fans will...

Presented in lush and vivid animation is the image of a pregnant Indigenous woman tied to the earth. Her fetus growing in its waters, with bright green vein-like strands connecting them. There’s animation, Indigenous imagery, like this a few times throughout Jeff Barnaby’s second feature film, but the distant lights of a town is a reminder of sacred land lost.
Blood Quantum is a Canadian feature set in and around the isolated Mi’gmaq reserve of Red Crow in 1981. The title refers to, as the press notes state, the colonial policy of “determining indigeneity based on the percentage of your indigenous heritage.” If you have anything less than 50% of Indigenous blood quantum, you cannot call yourself Indigenous. It’s a law of cultural extermination, risking assimilation, that has yet to be itself killed. But in Barnaby’s film, Indigenous blood is power and provides immunity to the film’s zombie plague.

"Ain't nobody immune here but us!" Shudder has released an official red band trailer for a Canadian indie horror film titled Blood Quantum, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. It also stopped by the Busan, Sitges, and Brooklyn Horror Film Festivals. Blood Quantum is the second feature film from director Jeff Barnaby (Rhymes for Young Ghouls), a Mi'gmaq native making films about and starring First Nation tribes in Canada. The dead are coming back to life near the Mi'gmaq reserve of Red Crow, except for its indigenous inhabitants who are strangely immune to the zombie plague. The local tribal sheriff rallies to fight off hordes of walking white corpses. The film stars Michael Greyeyes, Elle-Maija Tailfeathers, Forrest Goodluck, Kiowa Gordon, Olivia Scriven, and Brandon Oakes. Beware the hungry undead. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jeff Barnaby's Blood Quantum, direct from Shudder's YouTube: The dead are coming...

Exclusive: DeGrassi alumna Olivia Scriven is set for a recurring role opposite Cate Blanchett and Elizabeth Banks in Mrs. America, FX’s nine-episode limited series from Emmy-winning writer Davhi Waller, Oscar-nominated producer Stacey Sher and FX Productions.
Mrs. America tells the true story of the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, and the unexpected backlash led by a conservative woman named Phyllis Schlafly (Blanchett). Through the eyes of the women of that era — both Schlafly and second-wave feminists Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug and Jill Ruckelshaus (Banks) — the series explores how one of the toughest battlegrounds in the culture wars of the ’70s helped give rise to the Moral Majority and forever shifted our political landscape.
Scriven plays Liza Schlafly, the daughter of Phyllis Schlafly (Blanchett).
Blanchett executive produces Mrs. America with Sher; Waller, who also serves as showrunner; Coco Francini; Anna Boden; and Ryan Fleck.

We present the red carpet interviews from the Midnight Madness Tiff premiere of Blood Quantum, a zombie movie with a difference. The film premiered at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, and those attending were director Jeff Barnaby, and actors Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Michael Greyeyes, Forrest Goodluck, Kiowa Gordon, Stonehorse Lone Goeman, Olivia Scriven, Brandon Oakes.
Synopsis:
The dead are coming back to life outside the isolated Mi’gMaq reserve of Red Crow, except for its Indigenous inhabitants who are strangely immune to the zombie plague. The term “blood quantum” refers to a colonial blood measurement system that is used to determine an individual’s Indigenous status, and is criticized as a tool of control and erasure of Indigenous peoples. The words take on even more provocative implications as the title of Jeff Barnaby’s sophomore feature, which grimly depicts an apocalyptic scenario where in an isolated “Mi’gmaq” community discover they are...

In David Lynch's Twin Peaks, Kyle MacLachlan eerily transformed from Agent Dale Cooper to Dougie Jones and in last year's highly successful The House With A Clock In Its Walls, starring Cate Blanchett and Jack Black, Kyle morphed into a fantastically eldritch warlock, a role he enjoyed playing very much, he told me when we met. In high school he performed in Cole Porter's Anything Goes, Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers' Oklahoma!

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"The Martian"
Unfortunately, the poster on this one was misleading -- they never actually let us bring Matt Damon home after seeing the movie. (His wife would probably disapprove.) You can, however, take home Ridley Scott's acclaimed Mars mission movie "The Martian" on DVD and Blu-ray starting January 12. The Blu-ray editions include more than 90 minutes of special features, including five "in-world" pieces, and featurettes from the cast, director, and producers. There's also a gag reel, which should be fun.
"Hotel Transylvania 2"
Drac's Pack is back in the sequel to "Hotel Transylvania," as they put the son of Mavis and Johnny through a "monster-in-training" boot camp to bring out his vampire side. The DVD, out January 12, includes feature commentary with the director and vocal cast,...

The Degrassi franchise has built a reputation for longevity over the course of its run, as the series focusing on the trials and tribulations of students and teachers at the fictional Degrassi school first began in 1979 with The Kids of Degrassi Street. The latest incarnation of the series, titled Degrassi: The Next Generation, has been running since 2001, and has been the starting and breakout show for numerous current stars, including rapper Drake, The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev, and former 90210 star Shenae Grimes.
TeenNick, however, the show’s Us broadcaster, recently announced the cancellation of the series, bringing it to a close after 14 seasons, and signalling the apparent end of the Degrassi franchise once again. The show’s final season is poised to begin on July 20th and be comprised of 12 episodes, coming to an end on July 31st.

The happiest day of Alli’s life quickly turned into a nightmare she couldn’t escape.
Degrassi‘s 13th season continued Jan. 28 with Alli’s (Melinda Shankar) 18th birthday, and in typical Alli fashion, she went Big. And that’s not an exaggeration; before the half-hour premiere was over, she’d been engaged, married and horrifically beaten to a bloody pulp.
Marrying Leo seemed like the easiest way to keep him in the country, but the happiest day of Alli’s life quickly turned into a nightmare she couldn’t escape, as she found herself being beaten mercilessly in Leo’s crappy car mere minutes after saying “I do.” Her family and friends were horrified by her injuries, but rather than admit they were Leo’s doing — which would also require her to come clean about the wedding — she made up a story about getting mugged.
Honestly, Alli’s story line really upsets me.

Sacrebleu! It looks like Maya is already making a new enemy before her big summer trip to Paris. Watch!
First impressions are everything on Degrassi. One bad exchange can lead to a life-long — or, at the very least, a season-long — feud between characters; and based on this clip from the show’s July 11 season premiere, obtained exclusively by HollywoodLife.com, a new feud is definitely on the horizon.
It all begins when new-girl Zoë Rivas (Ana Golja), who also happens to star on West Drive, waltzes onto the scene with a sassy “Bonjour, bitches.” You know things can only go south from there. (Side note: Does anyone else think Zoë looks like a mini Nina Dobrev?)
Zoë immediately clicks with Tristan (Lyle Lettau) — he bugs out when she tells him the entire cast watches his West Drive Experience vlog — but Maya (Olivia Scriven)? Not so much.
“I guess you can come too,...

Ok, we're officially worried about Maya (Olivia Scriven), y'all! In Degrassi's spring finale, "Zombie Pt. 2," Maya, whose boyfriend Cam (Dylan Everett) recently killed himself on the show, is looking to have some fun. Maybe a little too much fun. After tossing her beloved cello in the trash, Maya decides to spend some time with Harry—you know, the guy she hooked up with at the senior party and then posted a video of her makeout session with on FaceRange. We've got an exclusive sneak peek at the TeenNick hit drama's finale, which airs this Friday, that shows a bold Maya chatting with and kissing Harry in the hallway at school...and making a proposition we definitely don't...

Someone's got her eye on Adam! Watch this exclusive 'Degrassi' preview clip for your first look at Adam's potential new girlfriend. With Becky (Sarah Fisher) away at "correction" camp, Adam (Jordan Todosey) is single and ready to mingle — which is good, because a cute girl gives him her phone number on the Nov. 19 episode of Degrassi! In this clip, obtained exclusively by HollywoodLife.com, an eligible bachelorette makes eyes at Adam at the Battle of the Bands, and Imogen (Cristine Prosperi) has the honor of playing matchmaker. The clip also features an awkward hug between Zig (Ricardo Hoyos) and Maya (Olivia Scriven), so I guess we can expect their unspoken attraction to stick around for a while! Watch the clip below, then drop a comment: Do you approve of Adam's new lady friend? Watch this exclusive sneak peek of Maya's performance on the Oct. 26 episode of 'Degrassi.' We all know Maya (Olivia Scriven) is crazy about Cam (Dylan Everett) — but is he the one she's singing about in this clip from the 300th episode of Degrassi? Either way, Mo (Jake Neayem) doesn't think she's got the sex appeal necessary for Whisper Hug to win the battle of the bands, so he suggests Imogen (Cristine Prosperi) take over the vocals, herself. Ouch! Maya later receives a much-needed injection of self-esteem from Bff Tori (Alex Steele) — but as Alex tells HollywoodLife.com, the well-intended plan sort of backfires in Tori's face. "Tori thinks Maya needs a little confidence boost, so she gives her a makeover … and she maybe boosts it a little too much," Alex teases. I'll have more scoop on Tori and Maya's fractured friendship tomorrow, but for now, enjoy the clip from...
