“Versailles” star Alexander Vlahos has partnered with German executive producer Nicole Oebel (“Lola”) to form independent film production company CowHouse Films.
The Welsh-German company will kick off in early 2021 with principal photography on “Watchtower,” a film that explores the inner conflict of isolating oneself and allowing the presence of a loved one to be a source of strength.
Starring Sophie Hopkins, the film will be directed by Vlahos.
Vlahos’ acting work includes “Merlin” and “Privates,” and he will next be seen in Zdf Enterprises and Fuji TV’s soccer drama “The Window.” He made his directorial debut with the short “Lola,” which won best first time director at the Independent Shorts Awards earlier this year.
After a few years of experience as a producer at Deutsche Welle TV, Oebel executive produced “Lola,” and his Welsh follow-up short film, “Here We Are.”

Doctor Who might be a cultural phenomenon that’s lasted 55 years and counting, but its spinoffs have been a mixed bag in terms of success. Torchwood is a cult favorite to this day, but it only managed four seasons before slipping off the air. The Sarah Jane Adventures, meanwhile, was a family-friendly hit for five years until star Elisabeth Sladen sadly passed away. Lastly, Class arrived to little fanfare in 2016 and quickly disappeared after one season.
Thanks to the good people at Big Finish Productions, though, it’s now getting a new lease on life in the audio medium. Following on from its revival of Torchwood, and all-new adventures for David Tennant’s Doctor, the company’s resurrecting the teen-oriented spinoff for at least two boxsets of three brand new stories, with the original cast of the show returning to reprise their roles.

An exchange between two of the teen protagonists in BBC America’s “Doctor Who” spinoff “Class” takes place a little over halfway through the season and exemplifies some of the series’ unique strengths:
Ram, trying to explain his Sikh religion: “We believe the important thing in your life is to do good action. But if you do the good action, somewhere in the process there’s got to be God, even if you don’t have faith or believe that there’s some dude out there looking after you. Isn’t doing a good thing, one human to another, the closest we’re going to get to God?”
April: “And what about the bad things we do, one human to another?”
It’s the type of philosophical discussion that one might have in quieter contemplative moments, but since this is the world of “Doctor Who,” it instead occurs on a shadowy alien world,...

“Where are all the teachers?” screams a girl running into a packed school prom to warn her classmates of their impending death. Thus Class obeys the first rule of any young adult adventure: adults should be absent, useless or evil; the kids are the ones who save the world.
With one exception in this case. As a Doctor Who spin-off, a certain Gallifreyan has licence to pop in and wave his Sonic Screwdriver about from time to time, as he does in For Tonight We May Die.

I suspect I am not the only viewer that greeted the news of Doctor Who spin-off Class with a sizeable helping of scepticism. The Steven Moffat seasons of the parent show have been patchy, to say the least, and the premise for this spin-off sounded an awful lot like Buffy The Vampire Slayer. But, that scepticism has now given way to excitement, as the full-length trailer reveals potential for a gripping, self-aware drama that incorporates the very best essence of Doctor Who.
Starring Greg Austin (Mr Selfridge), Fady Elsayed (Penny Dreadful), Sophie Hopkins (Since We Last), Vivian Oparah, and Katherine Kelly (Mr Selfridge), Class also boasts a brief appearance by The Doctor himself – Peter Capaldi – in the pilot episode.

He can travel through space and he can travel through time but he can’t always be there when you need him. So says “Doctor Who” star Peter Capaldi in the first teaser trailer for BBC America’s spin-off of their popular series, entitled “Class.” Although Capaldi won’t show up in every episode of the new sci-fi-tinged series, his presence will likely linger over all of it, and he takes center stage in this snappy little slice of things to come.
Per the series’ very intriguing official synopsis, “It’s a new term at Coal Hill Academy, and students are preparing for their Autumn Prom.
