From Freddy Krueger to Annie Wilkes, iconic villains with memorable backstories are a hallmark of popular horror media, but there’s more than one way to terrify audiences. For example, some horror flicks task viewers with unmasking the mysterious antagonist alongside our main characters in scare-centric whodunit mashups.
And with the continued success of the Scream franchise proving that audiences are hungry for more mystery alongside the traditional blood and guts, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six lesser-known whodunit horror flicks for your viewing pleasure.
Since this list is meant to highlight underseen scary movies, we won’t be including more popular whodunits like the original Friday the 13th, Happy Death Day or any of the aforementioned Scream films. However, feel free to comment below with your own favorite whodunit horror flicks if you think we missed a particularly underrated one.
Now, onto the list…...

When a phone call from out of the blue brings Leo (Joey Millin) back into contact with his sister, Virginia (Madison West), long estranged from her family due to years of drug abuse, he arrives to find her alone in a bare apartment in the midst of an apparent overdose. After the convulsions and nausea subside, Virginia insists to Leo that she has been clean for 8 months due to the help of a mysterious group. She confides to her cynical brother that her edginess and paranoia actually stem from a sinister ritual conducted by the group that took her in at her lowest and eventually revealed themselves to be a cult. This curse bound her emotions and physical sensations to a man she has never met before.

Much is going to be made of the circumstances surrounding Threshold, the micro-budget supernatural road movie by co-directors Powell Robinson and Robert-Patrick Young, which arrives via always-immaculate horror specialists Arrow this week. Shot on two iPhones over two days, with a crew of three and dialogue mostly improvised by its two leads, there’s no doubt that it’s an impressive example of turning limitations into virtues. The against-the-odds achievement of getting a film made under those conditions, as impressive as that is,is really the least important thing here, though. iPhones are just handy-sized cameras, after-all, and the wide vistas of an American cross-country trip ensure the frame is almost always cinematic and often quite beautiful.

Grimmfest have today announced the launch of their Grimmfest Easter Edition, a new annual event taking place over the Easter Weekend, and complimenting the long-established festival in October.
Easter is traditionally a time for rebirth, renewal, resurrection. But as the Pandemic continues to rage, and the world remains on lockdown for the foreseeable future, it is also a time for rethinking. Thus, while the Grimmfest team had hoped to be hosting a ‘live’ Easter event, instead, the Grimmfest Easter Edition will be taking place online, and will build on the success of Grimmfest 2020 online experience.
The festival will open on Thursday April 1st with our preview night that will feature the UK premiere of Kourosh Ahari’s surreal and sulphurous Iranian American haunted hotel horror The Night, which has already earned deserved comparisons to Kubrick’s The Shining, alongside the UK premiere of Lluis Danes’ visually ravishing reimagining of the...

UK genre film festival Grimmfest has revealed the line-up for its first Easter edition, which will open with Kourosh Ahari’s The Night and Lluís Danés’ The Barcelona Vampiress.
The spin-off event to Grimmfest was established after its traditional October festival was moved online, due to the pandemic, and was meant to mark a return to physical screenings for the organisation. But ongoing cinema closures and restrictions will also see the Grimmfest Easter Edition go virtual from April 1-5.

In this round-up, I’ll be wrapping up my coverage from Salem Horror Fest’s stellar lineup of films for their 2020 edition of their festival. The films I’ll be discussing here include Ryan Glover’s The Strings, Threshold by Powell Robinson and Patrick R. Young, and Sophie Peyrard’s documentary, The Witches of Hollywood.
The Strings: As someone who has been struggling with her own sense of creativity as of late, there was something about The Strings that really stuck with me long after I finished it. Centered around a singer/songwriter (played by real-life musician Teagan Johnston), the story follows Catherine in the aftermath of a messy breakup with her band, who pretty much jettisons her life and escapes to her aunt’s vacation home in search of inspiration and music that reflects who she is evolving into as an artist.
