Paradigm has hired Kyle Jensen as a Literary Content Agent and Jamie Kaye-Phillips as a Theatre Literary Content Agent, upping Matthew Nutty from Coordinator to Agent in the Talent department.
Additionally, Napoli Management Group, a division of Paradigm Media Entertainment, has tapped Brian Neal as an agent. A 23-year veteran of the television news industry, he’ll in his new role rep all levels of on-air talent in the national broadcast news space.
Jensen and Nutty will be based out of the agency’s Los Angeles office, with Kaye-Phillips working out of New York. Where Neal will be based is not yet clear.
The hirings follow December’s announcement that Todd Eisner, a 30-year veteran talent agent, had joined Paradigm from the now-folded A3. Over the past year, Paradigm has been staffing up with the hires of Chris Till and Neil A. Cohen, as well as internal promotions, having elevated 14 agents to Partner.

Late-night TV talk shows have gone dark due to the WGA writers strike — well, all except one. Fox News Channel’s “Gutfeld!” (the exclamation point is theirs) will remain on television. Host Greg Gutfeld has non-union writers, IndieWire is told.
Gutfeld’s writing staff is smaller than most traditional late-night talk shows. He’s got some known comedians, including Nick Dipaolo and Joe DeVito, as well as longtime producer Tom O’Connor. Senior producer is Arash Mosaleh; Joe Machi is also on the writing staff.
Some may not consider “Gutfeld!” to hold a place in the long-running stable of comedy talk shows including CBS’ “The Late Show,” NBC’s “Tonight Show” and “Late Night,” ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (exclamation mark also theirs), and Comedy Central’s “Daily Show.” But, like those guys, Gutfeld does topical comedy — he just leans the other way.
Also comparable to the main stable? Greg’s ratings.

Not all the late-night shows have gone dark, it seems.
Gutfeld! will remain on Fox News, airing a new episode Tuesday evening. This comes after the WGA called for a writers strike following breakdown in talks with the studios.
All of the other late-night shows including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Daily Show have halted production.
While Gutfeld!, hosted by Greg Gutfeld, has a smaller team than most of the late-night shows and Gutfeld writes his own monologue, he does have some help from the likes of Nick Dipaolo. Tom O’Connor — who has worked with Gutfeld since his Red Eye days — exec produces, Arash Mosaleh is senior producer, and the writing staff includes Joe DeVito and Joe Machi.
Deadline understands that Gutfeld and his team are not WGA members.

Donald Trump held a rally in Waco, Texas, this weekend during the 30 year anniversary of the federal government’s siege on the Branch Davidian compound in 1993. Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz said that Trump’s choice of locale brought back “visions of [Branch Davidian leader and self-proclaimed prophet] David Koresh.” But Moskowitz isn’t alone in noticing the correlation. A minister in a modern offshoot of the Branch Davidians has also said the former president was “making a statement” by coming to Waco.

“Gutfeld!” averaged 2.19 million viewers for August, beating CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” at 2.16 million, according to Nielsen Media Research. Trailing in total average viewers were NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” at 1.34 million; ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (on hiatus for part of August) at 1.14 million and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” with 383,000.
“Gutfeld!” has topped individual days and weeks before, but August was a first for any cable show.

Brandon Murphy, the screenwriter who co-wrote last year’s action-comedy sequel Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, died January 9 in Los Angeles, friends told Deadline. He was 43. No cause of death was given.
Murphy penned Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard with his younger brother, Phillip Murphy, and with Tom O’Connor, who wrote the original 2017 pic. Both starred Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, with Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas joining for the sequel. The latter opened to $17 million domestic on Father’s Day weekend last year and finished at $70 million.
Murphy also wrote and was making his directing debut on horror thriller Snow Valley, which was in postproduction at the time of his death.

In a presentation delivered to buyers this week during the virtual American Film Market, the stars of biopic “McCarthy,” Michael Shannon and Emilia Clarke, as well as its director Václav Marhoul and screenwriter Tom O’Connor, explained why the story of the venomous demagogue Joseph McCarthy had to be told now.
The film, now in development, follows McCarthy’s journey from being an ambitious Republican Senator to the most powerful and feared man in the U.S., culminating in a dramatic and absolute ruin.
“Given that McCarthy is such a darkly iconic figure in our history I was shocked that there had never been a film made about him,” O’Connor said.
O’Connor relied on research to tease out details of McCarthy’s origin story, such as his fascination with Adolf Hitler. “Being from Wisconsin, with a heavy German population, McCarthy had been given a copy of ‘Mein Kampf’ by one of his supporters,...

Fox News has drawn a big crowd for years with shows that skewer liberals and the perceived excesses of the left.
Now the cabler is seeing strong returns for its experiment with Greg Gutfeld as host of a comedy-oriented 11 p.m. hour that blends roundtable discussion, sketches and Gutfeld’s pointed monologues in a “Daily Show”-meets-“Politically Incorrect” format.
Recent episodes have featured Gutfeld and guests railing against familiar culture war topics like “wokesters” questioning traditions in math, the concept of gender fluidity and a defense of Joe Rogan in his fight with CNN.
“I haven’t seen a doctor get that traumatized since my last prostate exam,” Gutfeld quipped after running a clip of Rogan interviewing CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
By any measure, “Gutfeld!” has been a success for Fox News since its April 5 debut. The nightly program has averaged 1.6 million viewers since its debut and 313,000 in the adults 25-54 demo.

Michael Shannon will portray U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy, a venal politician so evil he spawned his own -ism, in the aptly named film “McCarthy.”
The two-time Oscar nominee, known for off-beat performances in the likes of “Nocturnal Animals” and “Revolutionary Road,” will try to find the dark heart of the demagogue who used show-trials and red-baiting to rise to power on a wave of anti-communist hysteria. He will be aided in that effort by director Václav Marhoul and a cast that includes “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke and “The Place Beyond the Pine’s” Dane DeHaan. Scoot McNairy rounds out the ensemble.

Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek reunite with director Patrick Hughes for a sequel to 2017’s disappointing action caper The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Unfortunately, the best you can say about it is that it’s marginally better than the first film.
Reynolds plays former triple-a rated bodyguard Michael Bryce, who’s had his license taken away because of his multiple failings, several of them the direct result of his association with hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. When his exasperated therapist (a wasted Rebecca Front) recommends a vacation, Bryce heads to picturesque Capri, but he’s barely there five minutes before Darius’ fiery-tempered wife Sonia (Hayek) plunges him into the centre of a gunfight and recruits him into...

The first movie, The Hitman’S Bodyguard (2017), without “wife’s” in the title, was a delightful buddy action comedy. The drop-off of this sequel is monstrously precipitous, making it a huge disappointment-in-waiting for fans of the progenitor. How can a cast of Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, Gary Oldman and Morgan – freakin’ – Freeman go so wrong? It appears that so much was spent on the stars, and a slew of lovely European locations, that there was nothing left for the screenplay or editing. It winds up a hyperbolic mess with only occasional laughs to reward the viewer.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on June 17th, 2021, reviewing the new film “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard,” in theaters beginning June 16th.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
In this sequel to the “Hitman’s Bodyguard” (2018), the Bodyguard Michael (Ryan Reynolds) has to protect Wife Sonia (Salma Hayek) of the Hitman Darius (Samuel L. Jackson). The film creates a universe where Michael actually cares about a Triple A rating for his services, while the Hitman and his Wife are trying to conceive a child. Basically they have to save the world from a Greek named Aristotle (Antonio Banderas) who wants to bring down the internet grid in Europe.

Jackson).

Remember 2017’s “The Hitman’s Bodyguard”? No, seriously — do you? Does anyone? You might be surprised to learn that it has spawned a new sequel, “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard”; you might not be surprised to learn that returning director Patrick Hughes has made a movie even more negligible and forgettable than the first one.
These aren’t movies as much as they are spreadsheets; we can imagine the math that determined that an action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek — all reprising their roles, alongside new additions Antonio Banderas and Morgan Freeman — could make x number of money based on a budget of y dollars and Euros. What we can’t imagine is how Hughes and screenwriters Tom O’Connor, Phillip Murphy, and Brandon Murphy can so consistently turn a silk purse of a cast into a sow’s ear of a film.

Welcome to the latest TV and movie trope: therapists telling professional killers not to kill anymore. It happened in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and now, it’s happening to Ryan Reynolds in “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” — although technically, he’s being told not to bodyguard anymore.
Reynolds returns as Michael Bryce in the sequel to “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” apparently trying to put his old life behind him. It’s not exactly going well, as he finds himself tangled up once more with Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson), having been hired to protect Darius’s wife, Sonia (Salma Hayek).
Life as a bodyguard is hard at the best of times, but lest we forget, Bryce is still unlicensed. So not only is he dealing with that, but then comes the pressure of finding out that Darius and Sonia are trying to have a baby. Oh, and also,

Ryan Reynolds is trying really hard not to kill anyone in the first trailer for “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.” In fact, he’s on a doctor-mandated psychological “sabbatical” from doing any work as a gun for hire.
That, of course, doesn’t stop him from getting into obscene fire fights and running for his life, this time while trying to protect not just Samuel L. Jackson’s hitman Darius Kincaid, but also Kincaid’s wife: the infamous, international con artist Sonia Kincaid, played by Salma Hayek.
“I promised my therapist no bodyguard. So that means no guns, no killing and no blood,” Reynolds says in the trailer as he attempts to subdue a bad guy.
“Are you using pepper spray?” Jackson responds before erupting into a laughing fit.

Ryan Reynolds & Samuel L. Jackson Sequel ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ Moves Earlier In The Summer
After Disney plopped its Ryan Reynolds action comedy Free Guy from 20th Century Studios on August 13, a week before Lionsgate’s sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard which also stars Reynolds, it stood to reason the latter would move. The new date for the Reynolds-Samuel L. Jackson sequel, which also stars Salma Hayek, is June 16.
The announcement was made Monday by Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate’s president of worldwide distribution. The sequel, on its new date, arrives the weekend after Warner Bros/HBO Max’s feature musical In the Heights, and the weekend prior to Universal’s F9 on June 25. Also opening the weekend of June 16-18 is Focus Features’ Edgar Wright-directed feature documentary The Sparks Brothers.
Schwartz said, “This is the kind of summer action film that delivers even more comedy and more thrilling action than the first film – and it’s perfect for fans new to the franchise as well.

Benedict Cumberbatch stars in the true-story The Courier, an entertaining Cold War-era spy tale told in a pleasingly classic style. Grounded by sterling performances by Cumberbatch and Merab Ninidze, from TV’s “McMafia,” this is a true story about an ordinary British citizen Greville Wynne (Cumberbatch) recruited by MI6 and the CIA to contact a high-level Soviet military intelligence colonel Oleg Penkovsky (Ninidze), and who ends up at a courier carrying intelligence back to London as the Cold War heats up, intelligence that proves crucial in the Cuban Missile Crisis. The two men form a unexpected friendship, bonding as family men who both want to avoid nuclear war, something the Russian colonel fears Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev is moving towards.

While the spy thriller The Courier is the true-life story of British businessman Greville Wynne (played with bravado by Benedict Cumberbatch), it is also the tale of a friendship between two men that transcends borders and political ideologies.
Set in the early 1960s, the film follows Wynne, who has been recruited by Mi-6 and the CIA to partner with a high-ranking Soviet officer named Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) to gather intelligence in an effort to defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis and avert an all-out nuclear war. Wynne is tasked by CIA operative Emily Donovan (Rachel Brosnahan) and Mi-6 agent Dickie Franks (Angus Wright) to relay messages and state secrets between themselves and Penkovsky under the guise of the normal course of his regular business trips. Everything goes according to plan, that is until the Kgb begins to suspect that something is afoot and the whole operation and the safety of...

Samuel L. Jackson advocated for social distancing during a video chat interview on the March 31 installment of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in the most Samuel L. Jackson way, which means a lot of expletives were used. Jackson teamed up with writer Adam Mansbach to put a new spin on the author’s bestselling children’s book “Go the F*ck to Sleep.” Jackson said to Kimmel, “[Adam and I] talked about what we could do remind people of social distancing and where we are in these times now. So he wrote a new poem, I read it, and we want to present it to the public right now.”
The poem is appropriately titled “Stay the F*ck at Home,” and it finds Jackson urging “motherf*ckers” around the world to stay inside and practice social distancing and self-isolation. Jackson reads: “Now, technically, I’m not a doctor/ but, motherfucker, listen when I read a poem/ So,...

Exclusive: The Painted Bird director Vaclav Marhoul is set to make his English-language debut on McCarthy, a biopic of notorious former U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy.
Ironbark scribe Tom O’Connor has scripted the intriguing package, which will take a personal look at the influential former politician who rose to fame as a driving force behind anti-communist and anti-homosexual U.S. political sentiment during the Cold War but whose smear tactics and unfounded allegations ultimately led to censure and condemnation.
We hear the script will be a deep dive on the dangerously enigmatic but popular character and how he came to be at the center of one of America’s darkest chapters.

We hear the script will be a deep dive on the dangerously enigmatic but popular character and how he came to be at the center of one of America’s darkest chapters.

Lionsgate is in the final stages to acquire U.S. distribution rights to the Benedict Cumberbatch thriller “Ironbark,” an individual with knowledge of the deal said. Roadside Attractions will handle theatrical distribution as part of the deal following the film’s Friday night premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
Director Dominick Cooke’s film, which also stars Merab Ninidze, Rachel Brosnahan and Jessie Buckley, is based on the true story of a British businessman who is unwittingly recruited into an international effort to end the Cuban Missile Crisis of the 1960s.
Tom O’Connor wrote the script, which follows Cumberbatch as Greville Wynne, who leads a quiet life with his wife Sheila (Jessie Buckley) until he’s recruited because of his ordinariness to serve his country when rumblings of a mole in the Soviet Union government reach British intelligence agent Dickie Franks (Angus Wright) and CIA official Emily Donovan (Rachel Brosnahan...

Exclusive: Lionsgate is nearing a close on a deal for U.S. rights to Ironbark, the Dominic Cooke-directed drama that stars Benedict Cumberbatch. I’m hearing that Roadside Attractions will execute the theatrical release, and that the deal is in the mid-seven-figure range.
The Tom O’Connor-scripted drama stars Cumberbatch, Merab Ninidze, Rachel Brosnahan, and Jessie Buckley. Pic tells the true story of a British businessman unwittingly recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history. Forming an unlikely partnership with a Soviet officer hoping to prevent a nuclear confrontation, the two men work together to provide the crucial intelligence used to defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Cumberbatch turned in an awards-caliber performance. The actor underwent a significant weight loss that serves the story particularly well. Ironbark premiered Friday at the Eccles.
Pic is produced by Adam Ackland, Ben Browning, Ben Pugh, and Rory Aitken. UTA Independent brokered the deal.

Early on in Ironbark, directed by Dominic Cooke, British salesman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) realizes he’s sitting at a table with both a MI6 officer (Angus Wright) and a CIA officer (Rachel Brosnahan). Excited, he admits: “I can’t believe I’m having lunch with spies!” It’s a moment of brevity that speaks to the interesting tonal dance the filmmakers are trying at.
In 1960, Russian colonel Oleg Penkovsky (codename “Ironbark”) sent a message to the West: he wanted to avert catastrophe under the impulsive rule of Nikita Khrushchev. To help recruit their source, Western intelligence enlisted Wynne to begin a business relationship with Penkovsky in order to smuggle confidential documents out of the Soviet Union. The two men become fast friends, complicating a dangerous situation that will ultimately converge at the Cuban Missile Crisis.

While not quite as stiff as its title might suggest, Dominic Cooke’s “Ironbark” is unambiguously dad cinema down to its core. , it’s the perfect movie for anyone who watched “Bridge of Spies” and thought: “If only that had been 30 minutes shorter, a bit less artful, and a lot more British.” Never fear, the director of “On Chesil Beach” is here, and he’s naturally brought along Benedict Cumberbatch for good measure.
Holding a magnifying glass to a remarkable (but rather unheralded) footnote of Cold War history, “Ironbark” tells the story of how two men from opposite sides of the Iron Curtain forged a bond that would help avert nuclear armageddon. Cooke’s lean version of events begins in the heart of the Soviet Union circa the autumn of 1960, when a war hero and military intelligence colonel by the name of Oleg Penkovsky has become so desperate to de-escalate...
