An endangered musician in a Syrian town controlled by Isis must sell his beloved piano in order to escape the country in the gripping drama “Broken Keys.” It marks the feature debut of Columbia U.-trained, Lebanese writer-director Jimmy Keyrouz. Inspired by real events, the feature is an expansion of his 2016 Student Academy Award-winning short “Nocturne in Black.” Now boasting a score by Keyrouz’s famous compatriot Gabriel Yared and a Cannes 2020 label designation, the film combines real-life crisis, potent emotion and an ending of stunning defiance making it a strong entry for Lebanon in the Academy’s international feature competition.
In Sekka, twentysomething pianist Karim shares a bombed-out building with his cousin Maya (Sara Abi Kanaan), an aspiring law student, and many other neighbors of assorted ages and occupations, some of whom belong to an underground resistance opposing Isis. Since playing or listening to music is one of many...

The long-standing Middle Eastern religious wars are unlikely inspirations for comedy. Bathed in bloodshed and seemingly endless, the strife between religious factions is no laughing matter; it is difficult to make a serious film about the ongoing tragedy, much less a funny one.
So it's to filmmaker Nadine Labaki's great credit that the absurdly comic Where Do We Go Now? (Et maintenant on va où?) works so well. The Lebanese writer/director/actress has delivered a quirky, tragic and bitterly funny movie -- complete with musical numbers -- that finds humor without lessening the impact of unspeakable horror.
Where Do We Go Now? is set in a remote, dusty, crumbling Lebanese village where Christians and Muslims have been battling for what seems like forever; thanks to frequent violence, the town appears to have more dead residents than live ones. In relatively peaceful times, both sides seem to focus on their common interests,...

Following on from Nadine Labaki’s critically-acclaimed directorial début Caramel, the young, talented film maker once again delves into the lives of Lebanese women, and once again creates a film that is as rich in poignancy as it is in affability, in the upcoming drama Where Do We Go Now?
Labaki herself stars in the film as Amale, one of many women desperately attempting to mediate between a growing feud between the Muslims and Christians in a small village in Lebanon. In a village where everybody knows everybody else residents have comfortably been living side by side for centuries despite the clash of religious beliefs separating them. Yet the country is in turmoil following the futile war between religious zealots, and the wives are desperate to steer their husbands and sons away from any potential violence.
Despite successfully hiding any national news coverage of the feud, throwing away newspapers and...
