Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton’s HiddenLight Productions has named industry veteran Brenda Robinson as its first head of film finance and inclusion strategies. Robinson, an entertainment attorney, financier and producer, will be responsible for bringing new partners to HiddenLight’s slate of productions across film and television.
Robinson’s appointment represents a number of developments in HiddenLight’s strategy, including the use of grant and equity funding to develop and produce projects that the company takes to market later in the production cycle. It also signals a desire to tell a wider spectrum of stories from a diversity of voices.
Robinson was most recently a financier on the Academy Award-winning documentary “Icarus” as well as “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” and “Step.” She has executive produced numerous projects including the BAFTA-nominated “Passing,” directed by Rebecca Hall and produced by Nina Yang Bongiovi and Forest Whitaker; the Emmy-nominated “United Skates,...

Two of the world’s most influential women — pioneering primatologist Jane Goodall and lauded writer Joan Didion — are both on the receiving end of insightful new documentaries this year, both of which are hitting screens in the coming weeks. Brett Morgen’s “Jane” (which opened just last week to deservedly rave reviews) tracks the early years of Goodall’s work in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park, combining both new interviews with the still-trailblazing scientist and early footage lensed by her former husband Hugo van Lawick (a celebrated animal photographer) to tell a full-bodied story about Goddall’s amazing ethic and her tremendous empathy for the animals she’s made the center of her life.
This week, Griffin Dunne’s look at Didion’s life, “Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold,” will arrive on Netflix, following her own early years and her current state as a literary icon. Both...

It’s unfair to cram any life — least of all the truly extraordinary ones — into a neat, two-hour package meant for handy cinematic consumption, a point that is driven home repeatedly throughout Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack’s admirably comprehensive documentary “Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise.” Though the film endeavors to cover all of Angelou’s incredible life, complete with significant and compelling interviews featuring the subject herself, a series of essential talking heads and plenty of archival footage, it can hardly match the spark and originality of the woman it attempts to honor. Angelou’s life and work was rich, significant, influential and hugely varied, and yet “And Still I Rise” is hobbled by unimaginative delivery and direction.
In short, it’s limited, and Angelou’s own history proves that limitations must be fought against at every turn.

As Obama prepares to leave office, the Us is once again riven with racial tension – and a civil rights-themed film festival seems more timely than ever
As America’s first black president winds down his second term in office, it would be nice to think that a film festival telling stories of the civil rights movement would be unnecessary or, perhaps, an exercise in nostalgia. Instead, the Us is a country beset by police violence against black citizens, one that nominated a presidential candidate who blithely incites hatred against minorities and immigrants – a country, in other words, where the March on Washington film festival feels frighteningly relevant.
“This campaign season is all about people not being welcome in this country,” says Rita Coburn Whack, codirector of Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, a new documentary which will be screened on 18 July. The festival has doubled in size over four...
