The New York Times best-seller Lore (get it Here), written by Alexandra Bracken, is set to receive the film adaptation treatment from Universal, The Hollywood Reporter informs us. Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal is producing the film, and Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse – whose previous credits include G.I. Joe Origins: Snake Eyes, the Jesse Owens movie Race, Netflix’s Rebecca, and Amazon Studio’s Jean Seberg movie Seberg – have been hired to write the screenplay.
Bracken’s writings previously inspired the 2018 film The Darkest Minds.
Described as “Hunger Games meets Greek mythology”, Lore tells the story of Lore Perseous whose family was murdered as a part of the Agon, a divine hunt that occurs every seven years as punishment for a past rebellion by nine Greek gods, who are forced to walk the earth as mortals and be hunted. After years in hiding, Lore has to decide if she...

TV Creator and showrunner Chad Hodge has signed an overall deal with Tomorrow Studios.
Hodge and his Storyland Inc. banner will create new series for the studio under the deal, along with supervising development and executive producing series with other writers.
Hodge is the creator, showrunner, and executive producer of the TNT series “Good Behavior” starring Michelle Dockery. He serves as executive producer alongside Tomorrow Studios’ CEO Marty Adelstein and Tomorrow Studios’ president Becky Clements.
“Chad combines being an amazing writer and the consummate showrunner with being a great person,” said Adelstein. “After working together on ‘Good Behavior,’ extending our relationship to an overall deal was essential as I couldn’t imagine him doing future projects with anyone else. He makes the very difficult task of running shows look easy and his taste in material is unsurpassed. We couldn’t be more excited about working with Chad.”

Amandla Stenberg and Mandy Moore star in this dystopian thriller about teenagers with superpowers attempting to escape a government internment camp
At what point will dystopian Ya narratives stop being escapist entertainment and start to become essential schooling on how to survive a coming dark age? This late, mid-ranking entry stumbles across its most potent image: that of children being separated from their parents and ushered at gunpoint into state-operated holding camps, a bleak vision that doubtless felt more fantastical when author Alexandra Bracken penned the novel on which the film is based in 2012. Its power is muffled, however, by a growing reliance on shopworn Ya tropes and a general air of bet-hedging blandness. The pieces of a potential franchise are put in play here without stakes being raised or pulses quickened.

With July coming to a close, the Summer 2018 movie season begins to wind down, yet Disney's Christopher Robin hopes to keep the summer season alive for just a bit longer. The new release from the Mouse House will battle Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Fallout for the weekend's number one slot while Lionsgate's The Spy Who Dumped Me looks for a spot in the top three and early signals suggest Fox's The Darkest Minds may need to scratch and claw for a spot in the top ten. While we're expecting a close race, as of now we anticipate Mission: Impossible - Fallout will hang on for a second weekend atop the weekend box office, dropping around 47% for a $32 million sophomore session. In fact, this forecast feels slightly conservative considering the film has continued to outperform Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation throughout the week and that film dipped...

After a supercharged few months, the end of popcorn season is approaching.
The domestic box office weekend looks to be a battle between Disney’s “Christoper Robin” and the sophomore frame of Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” as both titles head for three-day totals around $30 million. Newcomer “The Spy Who Dumped Me” is targeting low double-digits.
“Christoper Robin,” Disney’s live-action adaptation based on the characters from Winnie the Pooh, hopes to tap into nostalgia when it opens on 3,500 screens. Ewan McGregor plays an adult version of Winnie the Pooh’s old pal Christopher Robin, who is now a businessman who has lost his sense of imagination. He reunites with his stuffed friends — including Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet — who help him find his way. Marc Forster directed from a screenplay by Alex Ross Perry and Allison Schroeder. Jim Cummings returns to voice Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, while Brad Garrett joins as Eeyore.

After opening at No. 1 to $61 million, “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” will again compete for the top spot on the box office charts this weekend against Disney’s new release “Christopher Robin.” Box office trackers have projected that both films will make between $30 million and $33 million this weekend.

In 2015, the four-film “Hunger Games” series wrapped its billion-dollar run with one final film, the bulkily-titled “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part Two.” It may have been the lowest-grossing entry in the series, but it still managed to make over $280 million at the domestic box office, the kind of money that similar Ya series would kill to make these days. For every “Twilight” or “Divergent” success, there’s a “5th Wave” (which made less than $35 million when it opened in 2016) or an “I Am Number Four” ($55 million) or an “Ender’s Game” ($61 million) — flops big enough to prove that the bubble of Ya films with a sci-fi twist, a dystopian setting, and a powerful lead has very much burst.

A disease that wipes out 98% of the world’s children. Government roundups that send the survivors to concentration-camp-like rehabilitation facilities. Heavily armed “tracers” tasked with hunting down the few who manage to escape. Despite its PG-13 rating, “The Darkest Minds” would have been one of the darkest teen fantasy thrillers ever made — if not for all the other dark teen fantasy thrillers out there these days.

Jennifer Yuh Nelson, a seasoned and bankable director in animation thanks to her work on the billion-dollar-grossing “Kung Fu Panda” franchise, has taken on her first live-action film with “The Darkest Minds,” to be released by Fox on Aug. 3. Adapted from the best-selling book by Alexandra Bracken, the first in a Ya trilogy, the film stars Amandla Stenberg in the lead as Ruby, alongside Harris Dickinson (“Beach Rats”), Miya Cech (“American Horror Story”) and Skylan Brooks (“Southpaw”).
The film, which also stars Mandy Moore and Bradley Whitford, revolves around a group of teens who mysteriously develop powerful abilities, and are declared a threat by the government and detained. It’s essentially a genre mash-up — a road movie with some sci-fi elements and lots of kinetic action.
“Jen is a badass who wants to make big, action-packed, event movies, but her artistic side always shines through,” says Jason Young, senior vice president of production at Fox.

There’s nothing in Hollywood that engenders confidence quite like earning a billion dollars at the box office, and in that regard, filmmaker Jennifer Yuh Nelson had every reason to stride onto the set of “The Darkest Minds” with a bit of a swagger. Making her debut as a live-action director, Nelson came into the project with a sterling record as a director of animation, having steered DreamWorks’ “Kung Fu Panda 2” and “Kung Fu Panda 3” to a collective $1.18 billion worldwide. In doing so, she racked up a raft of milestones as a female director: The first woman to solo direct a big-budget animated film; the first lone woman to win the Annie Award for best feature; the first solo woman director to be nominated for the animated feature Oscar; and one of the highest-grossing female directors.
And yet, stepping into the director’s chair on her first live-action project,...

20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for their interesting looking film The Darkest Minds, which centers around a world where 98% of America's children are killed off from a disease that sweeps the nation. The surviving 2% end up developing superpowers and they are placed in internment camps.
The film comes from the producers of Stranger Things and Arrival and it was directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who previously brought us Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3.
The story follows a 16-year-old girl who escapes from her camp and joins a group of other teens on the run from the government. As you'll see the story was heavily inspired by the X-Men comics. It tries to put its own spin on it, though and I like what I'm seeing in the trailer.

What happens when teenagers develop powers? They are, of course, rounded up and imprisoned by adults because people, in general, fear that which they do not understand. What's more, it's a bunch of teens; of course, the first instinct is "hide them away until we know what to do with them." This is the backdrop in which Alexandra Bracken's novel unfolds, the same book which is the basis for the upcoming sci-fi thriller The Darkest Minds.
The feature adaptation is directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson who is best known for her extensive work in animation including directing Kung Fu Panda 2 for which she received an Oscar nomination and making her the first woman to be nominated for an Oscar for an animated film.
Nelson is now making the jump to live-action with this feature...

‘The Darkest Minds’ Trailer: Amandla Stenberg Finally Gets a Dystopian Ya Series All Her Own — Watch
“Soon, there wouldn’t be any kids, anywhere.” So begins the tantalizing first trailer for Jennifer Yuh Nelson’s upcoming big screen adaptation “The Darkest Minds.” Based on Alexandra Bracken’s novel of the same name, the film offers up a teen-centric dystopian vision that’s mostly been missing from the movie marketplace since the last “Divergent” film didn’t even make it in into theaters. It’s no surprise then that the book series — which now includes three novels and three novellas — was first published at the height of the Ya dystopian craze, and perhaps the movie version can reignite interest in turning the fertile literary category into big box office bucks.
Yuh Nelson’s film has at least one big ace up its sleeve: star Amandla Stenberg, who first broke out in the original “Hunger Games” film as darling competitor Rue. The “Everything, Everything” actress now has her...

This stars Amandla Stenberg (from The Hunger Games + Everything, Everything), Mandy Moore, Harris Dickinson, Wallace Langham, Golden Brooks, Mark O'Brien, Patrick Gibson, and Gwendoline Christie. Fox is hoping that anyone* still wants to watch dystopian teen movies. They are basically the only studio in Hollywood that hasn’t been burned in the attempt to cash in on teens attempting to overthrow a dictatorial government/company (Yes, Lionsgate scored huge with The Hunger Games Trilogy Plus One, but they also released the floundering, maybe headed to TV, Divergent film series), and now that production of the highly successful Maze Runner Trilogy is back on track, they are looking to start up a new teen dystopia tentpole. IndieWire’s Springboard column profiles up-and-comers in the film industry worthy of your attention.
For his first feature, British actor and filmmaker Harris Dickinson didn’t shy away from some significant challenges. As the star of Eliza Hittman’s Sundance premiere “Beach Rats,” Dickinson appears in nearly every frame, tasked with striking a delicate balance between rough-and-tumble teen and a young man struggling with his sexuality. His Frankie lives out parallel existences that threaten to not just bump up against each other, but with annihilation.
“Beach Rats” follows Frankie over the course of one summer, a season spent alternately lazing around with his rabble-rousing pals at the beach and exploring visits to gay chatrooms that steadily go from digital-only to all-too-real. When Frankie meets Simone (Madeline Weinstein), he gets a glimpse of what his life could be like, but that’s a choice that could mean denying his real feelings.
