Netflix The four children, who are the prime protagonists, unravel the mystery and prove to be the biggest strength of the series.Geetika MantriAn almost forgotten childhood trauma. An old family home. A new family moving into it, setting off spooky, inexplicable incidents. A string of deaths. Sound familiar? It would be, if you have watched enough horror films. The story arc, no doubt, isn’t new. But if you are a fan of the genre, you’d know that more often than not, it’s the treatment of the combination of the same elements that can make all the difference between a nail-biting watch and a dud. However, Netflix’s newest Indian horror offering, Typewriter, doesn’t fall neatly into either category. Directed by Sujoy Ghosh of Kahaani fame, the series maintains the suspense for the most part, but fails to leave you with scares that you haven’t experienced before.

Typewriter (Netflix India)
Starring Purab Kohli, Palomi Ghosh, Sameer Kochchar,Aarna Sharma
Written & Directed by Sujoy Ghosh
A typewriter is an obsolete instrument. Much like the typical miniseries on television which has now been taken over by the smart sexy web series with production values that could put an average Subhash Ghai film to shame.
And yet the sheer vintage value of the ‘typewriter’ is preserved in writer-director Sujoy Ghosh’s engaging genre-conforming yet unorthodox supernatural webseries . What is it about? You may well ask. It’s about a discarded typewriter which does sinister things on its own, like pounding out corny messages like ‘Bhoot is not Jhooth’.
Jhoot or not, Sujoy’s re-Bhoot series stretching slinkily into five episodes has a lot of fun with spirits. The writing is sprightly yet dark, grim yet giggly, smart and briskly paced. This is not to suggest that Ghosh is here trying to do a Stree…...

Mumbai, July 12 (Ians) National award-winning filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh, after making his mark with "Kahaani" and "Badla", is stepping into the world of web series with his upcoming show, Typewriter.
The process of writing stories for a long-format medium as a web series, he concedes, is quite tough, and "Typewriter" was a learning process.
"It is really tough," Sujoy told Ians. "I literally had to unlearn so much from my habit of writing the script of a film, which has a duration of just three hours. I have also written a short film, and this (web series) is such a long format of storytelling. I had a hard time in the beginning. The good thing is now that I am done with my first web series, I can write and direct another one with the ease I do a film. Creatively, I know the path," he added.

Mumbai, July 12 (Ians) Be it Onir films such as "My Brother Nikhil", "Bas Ek Pal", and "I Am", or Sujoy Ghosh's upcoming web series "Typewriter", it is interesting to note how actor Purab Kohli has delivered some of his finest performances in collaboration with Bengali filmmakers. The actor says, without being biased, he believes that Bengalis have always been among the finest storytellers.
"There is no denial of the fact that although there are so many great filmmakers and writers in the country, Bengalis are known for their art, culture and storytelling. Although I have not watched a lot of Bengali films, I have many Bengali friends. All of them are very artistic. Their storytelling really fascinates me," Purab told Ians.
"I have always enjoyed Onir's writing, and Sujoy's work has always fascinated me. So whenever I collaborate with them, magic happens," added the actor.

There comes a point in everyone’s life where they just need to get away from their parents and find themselves. Its known as being a teenager. But what do your parents do with all the extra spare time once you’re not around? And in a modern, fast paced changing world it’s so easy to fall behind the times. Helicopter Eela, starring Kajol and Riddhi Sen playing mother and son, is the story of Kajol joining her son at music college to learn some new ways of doing the old things. Directed by Pradeep Sarkar under Ajay Devgn Films banner, it’s a great mix of old and new, young and old. The music has been brought together in collaboration by Amit Trivedi, Daniel George and a special song from Raghav Sarkak.
While the title is very much a curve ball, if there was to be a title song this would be it.

Shubhashish Bhutiani’s dreamy comedy-drama about a businessman embarking on a final journey with his father is smart, spellbinding and achingly relatable
This beautifully rendered Indian arthouse film, the debut of young director Shubhashish Bhutiani, enacts a subtle family comedy-drama that anyone who has spent time with an ageing parent could relate to easily.
Middle-class businessman Rajiv (Adil Hussain) lives with his wife Laila (Geetanjali Kulkarni), grownup daughter Sunita (Palomi Ghosh) and elderly father Daya (the Falstaffian Lalit Behl), a curmudgeonly former schoolteacher with whom Daya has, at best, a rocky, adversarial relationship.

Mukti Bhawan
Starring Lalit Behl, Adil Hussain, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Navninda Behl.
Written & Directed by Shubhashish Bhutiani
24 is too young to think about death, let alone make a melancholic meditative movie on mortality. Debutant Shubhashish Bhutiani’s Mukti Bhawan sweeps us into a world where death is not the end but a release into a realm of imperishable freedom.
Or Moksha, if you will.
Crafted with the care of a jeweller working on a specially intricate piece, the director brings to life the most precious and vital truth about death. As he takes us, along with his two protagonists, on a journey to the holy city of death Varanasi, the film somewhere along its resplendent route to salvation, becomes a treatise on life as defined by the inevitability of death.
Like all the most important directors of the world from Satyajit Ray to Ritesh Batra, Bhutani has a keen eye for detail.

Here’s an interesting story about how Palomi Ghosh landed her part in Mukti Bhawan! When Palomi mustered courage to sing for A R Rahman in front of a packed audience at Iffi Goa, she didn’t know she was about to sign a film thanks to the courage she showed, “For someone who passed her university years in North Carolina State University singing covers of A R Rahman songs I never thought I would ever get the chance to be in the same room as the God himself. But I couldn’t let the chance of speaking with him, albeit in a jam-packed auditorium. So I asked him ‘What would it take to work with him?’ he responded in his quiet voice, ‘surprise me!’, so I tried. I sang a Konkani-jazz number from my film Nachom-ia Kumpasar (Palomi bagged the special jury, National Award for the film) and he promptly said ‘Taken!
