Matthew Rhys (Perry Mason) is also on board for this one.

Deadline notes, “Production is taking place in Ireland and Prague, with Lucan Toh of Two & Two Pictures and Ian Henry of London Film & TV producing. XYZ Films is the financier.”
William Gillies wrote the screenplay for Hallow Road.
Anvari said in a statement, “I treasure the opportunity to collaborate with Rosamund and Matthew, two hugely talented actors who I’ve long admired, on Hallow Road. Sean Penn, Tye Sheridan and Michael Pitt breezed into Cannes’ beachside La Môme Plage Thursday evening for a glitzy cocktail reception toasting the world premiere of French phenom Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s Black Flies, a viscerally immersive action drama about the lives of New York City paramedics. The black-tie bash, which was co-hosted by The Hollywood Reporter and Tage Studios, drew a lively crowd of producers, press and Cannes glitterati.
Produced by Warren Goz (Copshop), Eric Gold (Copshop), Penn and Sheridan, Black Flies is directed by Sauvaire — whose previous Thai prison boxing drama A Prayer Before Dawn (2017) has become something of a cult favorite — from a script by Ben Mac Brown and Ryan King (The Tutor), based on Shannon Burke’s novel.

Catherine Corsini’s Le Retour has landed a Cannes competition slot after apparent complaints about the filmmaker, while Sean Penn starrer Black Flies by director Jean-Stehane Sauvair will also compete, festival organizers said on Monday.
A berth for Le Retour in Cannes had been put on hold while festival organizers took note of alleged events that took place during the filming of the French film. Fest organizers had no comment on the addition of Corsini’s film beyond a short announcement.
Le Retour, which stars Virgini Ledoyen, portrays a woman who works for a wealthy Parisian family who offers her the opportunity to take care of their children for a summer in Corsica. That’s an opportunity for her to return with her daughters, Jessica and Farah, to the island they left 15 years earlier in tragic circumstances.
Sauvaire’s paramedic thriller Black Flies also stars Tye Sheridan, Katherine Waterston, Michael Pitt and Mike Tyson.

The industry leaders, including Barbara Broccoli, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Edgar Wright, are calling for the UK government to “actively campaign to stop the violence used against the protesters in Iran, including an immediate stop to all executions” and “demand the release of all political prisoners in Iran.”
“Enough is enough. If the global community, which the UK is an active and influential member of, does not act firmly, these atrocities will continue,” the letter reads. “We need to sincerely support the people of Iran in their fight for justice and freedom.”

Did you know "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse" director Robert Eggers has not just one but two brothers? And they're both in the business of making films themselves? Well, if you didn't before, you do know. Max and Sam Eggers are joining forces as "The Egger Brothers" to make their directorial debut on "The Front Room," a thriller that pairs them with their sibling Robert's frequent studio A24.
Far from a stranger to their sibling's output, Max and Sam Eggers previously served as, respectively, a co-writer on "The Lighthouse" and a production assistant on "The Witch." The pair were also production assistants on Robert Eggers' short film adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" and got a "special thanks" in the credits for their brother's Viking thriller "The Northman." As such, it will be all the more interesting to see how The Eggers Brothers set themselves apart from Robert Eggers,...

The horror genre is a fun one in that it can go in many directions, but it is often dominated by men in front of and behind the camera. Hulu’s new anthology series Monsterland, which debuts Friday, subverts that expectation with a female showrunner and a cast and crew dominated by women.
Monsterland creator and showrunner Mary Laws was joined by actress Kelly Marie Tran and director of photography Anka Malatynska and director Desiree Akhavan at the virtual PaleyFest Fall TV Previews event to talk about the new series and how it champions female narratives.
“I think that its safe to say that as forward-moving as Hollywood is, I don’t think there are opportunities for women’s stories on screen, for women in leadership roles and for women protagonist roles,” said Laws. “I think so often I found myself in a room with a lot of men making...

Exclusive: Brit-Iranian director Babak Anvari, whose sophomore feature Wounds will play in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, has boarded suspense-thriller Departure, which is being developed by Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment label.
Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) has scripted the long-gestating buzz project which tells the story of how a series of airplanes mysteriously disappear and reappear while in flight, and a young Faa investigator becomes obsessed with the case. The mystery becomes personal when he finds out that his fiancé is on one of the planes. Writer-director Anvari will also work on the screenplay.
Former Imagine president Jim Whitaker (Flightplan) is producing through Whitaker Entertainment; Lucan Toh, who produced Anvari’s Wounds and Under The Shadow, is also producing; as is Ray, who adapted the project from book Ghosts Of The Air by Martin Caidin.
Brady Fujikawa will oversee for Lionsgate and Adam Borba will oversee for Whitaker Entertainment. The project has attracted different directors during its development.

It comes after their horror feature Wounds, which was written and directed by Anvari and produced by Toh, premiered this year at the Sundance Film Festival. The film, which stars Armie Hammer, Dakota Johnson, Zazie Beetz, Karl Glusman, and Brad William Henke, centers around the mysterious things that impact a bartender after he picks up the phone left behind at his New Orleans bar. It is based on Nathan Ballingrund’s horror novella The Visible Filth.
Wounds was Anvari’s second directorial feature; the British-Iranian helmer previously directed Under The Shadow, a Farsi-language horror pic that stars Narges Rashidi, Avin Manshadi and Bobby Naderi. Set in 1988 Tehran during the Iran-Iraq war,...
