Foals frontman and guitarist Yannis Philippakis has announced a new collaborative EP with Tony Allen, the late drummer who played heavily with Fela Kuti, under the name Yannis & the Yaw. He’s also shared the EP’s lead single, “Walk Through Fire.”
Landing on August 31st, the Lagos Paris London ft. Tony Allen EP has been in the works from the Foals frontman for over eight years. Philippakis first worked with Tony Allen in Paris in 2016, and began collaborating with the Nigerian Afrobeats pioneer as well as multi-instrumentalists Vincent Taeger, Vincent Taurelle, and Ludovic Bruni.
According to Philippakis, the two-day sessions culminated in an unfinished EP, and they occasionally regrouped to finish over the following four years until Covid isolated both him and Allen. Allen sadly passed in April 2020, and Philippakis felt a responsibility to carry the EP through to the finish line: “There was an imperative to finish it...

If Drake and Kendrick finally have a rap battle for the ages, it won’t be solely because of Kendrick’s recent verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That.” It (probably) won’t be over industry politics that we’re not privy to, pillow talking, or whatever other trivial issues have caused prior rap feuds. I’m not the biggest fan of rap beef because, as Snoop Dogg told Latto, it’s often a product of ego intensified by corporate forces looking to maintain division. But Drake and...

Danny Brown’s Quaranta serves as a sort of spiritual sequel to 2011’s XXX: That project was completed right when he turned 30, and “quaranta” means 40 in Italian. But the album that Quaranta is most comparable to, at least on a thematic level, is 2016’s Atrocity Exhibition, as both depict addiction as a life-or-death struggle. And unlike the Edm on 2013’s Old, you’d be hard-pressed to start raging to much of the material here.
While Atrocity Exhibition’s production was hectic and borderline bonkers, Quaranta’s is far more subdued. Tracks like “Tantor” are classic off-the-wall Danny Brown joints featuring the rapper-singer’s traditional leftfield vocal delivery and compositional quirks, but that’s more the exception than the rule. The remaining songs are largely contemplative and heavy, with slower, spacier beats that complement Brown’s understated and gravely flow.

Danny Brown has dropped his new album, Quaranta, out now via Warp Records. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.
Quaranta means “40” in Italian, and had been teased by the now 42-year-old Brown for years. The 11-track project features appearances from Mike, Bruiser Wolf, and Kassa Overall, with production from The Alchemist, Quelle Chris, frequent collaborator Paul White, in-house Bruise Brigade producer Skywlkr, and more.
The LP was written during the solitude of the pandemic, forcing Brown to look inward as he processed feelings of pain and isolation. In that sense, Quaranta captures how Brown hit rock bottom before spending a lengthy stint in rehab for alcohol and drugs earlier this year.
“There wasn’t too much to do, so it was the best thing for me to do — put everything I was going through into the music,” he said in a statement. “A lot of people make concept albums,...

Since exploding into popular consciousness with XXX, a 2011 masterwork detailing his crazed life of sex, pills, and weed, Danny Brown has served as a lodestone for modern rap’s perilous embrace of hard drugs. The Detroit rapper utilized a manic, strangely hyper cadence seemingly fueled by too much Molly. More importantly, he created music with fearlessness, seemingly unconcerned with how the oft-conservative rap world perceived him. When Edm soared in popularity, he penned Old, a wildly exuberant 2013 valentine to getting wasted as an elderly thirtysomething Mc while collaborating with alt-pop...

On his latest single “Jenn’s Terrific Vacation,” Danny Brown is feeling more than a little paranoid. Throughout the song, he attempts to get a grasp on the reality of his surroundings, which have proven to be quite disorienting. In the Noel Paul-directed accompanying music video, the space around him begins to revert to an original, empty form as he loses his grip on reality as he knows it.

Taking a cue from video games, Jpegmafia and Danny Brown have expanded their collaborative album, Scaring The Hoes, with a new four-track EP they’re calling Dlc Pack. Stream the project via Apple Music or Spotify below.

On Tuesday, Billboard published a piece speculating on why hip-hop hasn’t had a Number One album or single within the first half of 2023. The report set off a flurry of chatter from industry observers and rap fans drawing their own conclusions as to what the answer might be. Is the dearth of rap hits this year a matter of market share, artist deaths, incarceration, or stagnant charts?
Most people who think the occurrence is no big deal are chalking it up to a lack of releases by major rap stars.

The Brady Bunch house is back on the market — and, this time, it comes with the interiors of your 1970s TV dreams.
HGTV is selling the Studio City home pictured in hundreds of establishing shots on the famous sitcom not five years after purchasing it for $3.5 million. And given the competitive Los Angeles housing market and the dramatic changes the property’s undergone, it’s going to cost the next buyer a bit more. The asking price is $5.5 million.
Such is the premium for authenticity. After buying 11222 Dilling Street in 2018, the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network rejuvenated the facade and gutted its interiors — adding a second story to meticulously re-create the show’s living room, kitchen, bedrooms and yard that all previously only existed on Stage 5 of Paramount Studios. The process was chronicled in 2019 event series A Very Brady Renovation, recruiting surviving cast members and HGTV talent to bring the fictional home to life.

Kassa Overall’s music is a modern, often jarring synthesis of hip-hop and jazz. Overall is adept as both a rapper and jazz drummer, and the Seattle-based musician’s third album, Animals, features a bevy of underground hip-hop legends and jazz musicians (including pianist Vijay Iyer and trumpet player Theo Croker).
While Overall looked back on his past struggles with mental health on 2020’s I Think I’m Good, including a hospitalization during college, Animals is filled with unease about the objectification that comes with success in the music industry. “Ready to Ball,” for one, addresses the lure of materialism, as Overall’s malleable voice is sped up and slowed down, suggesting an alternate persona: “If he got more than me, I might have to make him bleed.”
The song structures on Animals are often chaotic. “Still Ain’t Find Me” mixes Latin rhythms and free jazz, as saxophones squeal over congas,...

For much of the past decade, Brooklyn rapper billy woods — he stylizes his name in lowercase letters — has reigned as an unlikely hero of left-of-center hip-hop. Unlike many of his peers who disappeared into CD-r obscurity, woods kept grinding with his Backwoodz Studios imprint. New York rapper billy woods and LA producer Kenny Segal have tapped Future Islands singer Samuel T. Herring for “FaceTime,” the lead single from their upcoming collaborative album, Maps.

Maryland rapper redveil has readied a new EP titled playing w/ fire. The project arrives April 19th, and as a preview, the artist has enlisted Jpegmafia for the song “black enuff.”
redveil has released a steady stream of material in recent years, including last year’s LP learn 2 swim. Still, the artist took a different approach for playing w/ fire, opting to write songs that would capture the energy of his live concerts. “I just wanted to make a bunch of songs to play at shows,” he said in a statement. “That meant playing w/ fire had to have more hooks and crazier drops. I just wanted a blast of energy throughout each song.”

It’s been a rough few years for young men. The role models offered up in today’s crop of alpha male podcasters and crypto grifters provide little in the face of the world’s dizzying buffet of hostilities. So it’s comforting to see Detroit hip-hop maximalist Danny Brown’s virtuosic brand of weirdo make its way to the TikTok generation. His podcast The Danny Brown Show (imagine Joe Rogan put through Adult Swim’s intellectual filter) is a reliable source for viral snippets. It also provided the promotional...

Danny Brown and Jpegmafia have released their new album, Scaring The Hoes, which finds the duo exuding humor true to their witty fashion. Stream it on Spotify or Apple Music below.
The collaboration between the two rappers is rife with cheeky takes and caricatures about time spent “hanging out with one of my bitches” and spicy lemon pepper wings “extra crispy extra wet,” as Brown jokes on the album’s title track. In addition to hoeish wordplay, the two banter about making music not traditional to the standard form of rap — or at least, sounds that aren’t usually a part of any typical rap formula.
“Scaring The Hoes” isn’t the only song on the record that’s meant to poke fun at the current state of affairs. The opening track “Lean Beef Patty” touches on the rap game by taking shots at Kanye West, with further mentions of Hulk Hogan,...

Danny Brown and Jpegmafia are set to release their collaborative album Scaring The Hoes this Friday, March 24th. In anticipation, they’ve shared the title track.
“Scaring The Hoes” was produced by Jpegmafia himself and opens with Brown setting the tone by telling a story about “hanging out with one of my bitches” and demanding an order of spicy lemon pepper wings “extra crispy extra wet.” The experimental production features frenetic handclaps and a swirling sax solo as the duo rap about not making the style of music that’s featured on the album.
“Boy, fuck that hip hop and that old man flow,” Brown spits. “Where the autotune at? Give a fuck about that trash/ ‘Cause the art is for the scams, catch up old man.” Jpegmafia adds, “How the fuck we s’posed to make money off this shit?/ You wanna be a Mc?/ What the fuck you think,...

Aap Rocky’s Long.Live.Aap was released in January 2013, and to celebrate its 10th year anniversary, the rapper has released a reworked “Angels” music video dubbed “Angels Pt. 2.”
The Awge and Sam Lecca-directed visual finds a young Aap Rocky alongside his crew as a look back while giving it a new frame: it houses unreleased Los Angeles footage shot a decade ago and features the late Aap Yams with a halo floating above his head.
Director Lecca tells Rolling Stone the pink-themed footage was filmed in Los Angeles on Jan.

A favorite within Michigan’s increasingly dominant rap scene, Babyface Ray made his career with the kind of deadpan raps that are as icy as winter in the Midwest. Like a Blaxploitation character in rap form, the menacing bars he spits arrive with an almost impossible equanimity. “I done seen it all. That’s why I am so cool,” the 31-year-old rapper says over Zoom in Los Angeles. “Nothing really fazes me.”
Ray’s new album Face, out today, opens with an audacious beat switch that illustrates the rapper’s confident nonchalance.

In the modern world dating and relationships, and online dating apps, can seem at best a gamble and at worst a round of Russian roulette. Fresh is a film that leans more towards the latter. The film centers around its main heroine Noa, Daisy-Edgar Jones, a young woman whose disgust for dating is changed by a chance encounter in a grocery store with her would-be prince charming, an awkwardly charming man named Steve (Sebastian Stan). Even by today’s standards, things start to move fast, and it isn’t long before Steve suggests that the couple go out for a reclusive getaway in the wilderness. It isn’t long before Noa begins to suspect that Steve isn’t quite everything and that the wild appetites that he harbors in his heart, may be more than the stomach can handle.
