The future of awards shows is now, as the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) held the 47th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, announcing the winners of 19 of the 100 categories during a two-hour ceremony on CBS featuring the hosts — the women of CBS talk show “The Talk” — winners, and special guests appearing in taped appearance from the safety of their homes.
“Tonight, we did not let the worldwide pandemic of Covid-19 keep up from honoring some of the most talented contributors to our Daytime Television community,” president and CEO of NATAS Adam Sharp said in a statement. “We celebrated not only the best programming and performances of the last year, but reflected on the legacy of Daytime’s biggest moments and icons.”

Since the 1980s the Daytime Emmys have presented awards for younger actors and actresses age 25 and under. But with only four soaps on the air and relatively few entrants into those categories, in 2019 the television academy decided to merge the categories into a single Best Young Performer award. And according to our racetrack odds, which are calculated by combining the predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users, Olivia Rose Keegan (“Days of Our Lives”) will prevail.
Keegan is only 20-years-old, but she’s the veteran of this category. This is her third consecutive Emmy nomination, and she left the show in dramatic fashion in 2019 after her character, Claire Brady, held her aunt Ciara (Victoria Konefal) captive and tried to burn her alive … for the second time. “Days” shoots so far in advance that she had already finished filming with the show by the time she earned last year’s nomination for Best Younger Actress.

True confession: I may be the only person in the United States who dramatically slid down a wall and let out a tortured “Nooooooo!!!!” after learning that American Idol will eventually cut back to one night a week midway through Season 14.
After three consecutive hump days of middling vocals, “heard it all before” backstories and not nearly enough scenes of Ryan Seacrest getting bear-hugged by jubilant families, however, I’m reconsidering my stance.

That’s good news for Idol‘s latest evictee and the seven surviving vocalists, all of whom have proved beyond a reasonable doubt that they don’t need no stinkin’ Auto-Tune for an average day on stage or in the studio.

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

On paper, Top 13 week on American Idol had all the makings of a disaster: Inexperienced contestants tackling the Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston songbooks, those twin, towering hurdles that have led to the ruination of so many Idol wannabes. But a funny thing happened on the way to “I Will Always Love You”: The singers of Season 11 stepped up, sang (mostly) in tune, and delivered one of the best overall live shows we’ve seen in recent memory.

American Idol is my baby. My girl. My boyfriend with the toothy, messed-up grin. Idol is my everything -- and it's certainly better than The Voice, but if it makes you uncomfortable to admit that, we can pretend this sentence never happened. Bottom line: Idol is back with a weird group of strangers, and after their first week of competition, my contestant rankings have shifted like abacus beads tabulating Steven Tyler's age.

Wednesday night was the girls night to shine on American Idol as their first live performances of the season took place. A half hour into the two hour broadcast, judge, Randy Jackson admitted that the judges gave “some passes in judgement” when the boys performed on Tuesday night. So the judges got their act together and took their roles as judges just a bit more seriously this time around. The night started off just as strong as boys’ night but it wasn’t until Hallie Day made her way to the stage that this became a broadcast worth watching. If Day doesn’t make it to the top 13, we mine as well turn the voting over to Vote for the Worst. But let’s get to those before Day for a moment…
Country music jump started the night as Chelsea Sorrell graced the stage with her best Carrie Underwood performance.

I kicked off my recap of The X Factor‘s series premiere with a multiple choice question, so it seems somehow fitting to also begin our discussion of its sophomore outing by asking everyone to get out their No. 2 pencils and grapple with this mind-bender: A mega-hyped talent competition is airing its second episode, and 50 minutes in, the most entertaining aspect is a cellphone ad starring the show’s ornery British judge: How many minutes until you change the channel, or else find yourself mesmerized by a filthy, half-deflated basketball that undoubtedly deserves the Emmy for Outstanding Prop in a Reality Series Backstory?...

Last month, while interviewing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for a story about possible changes to American Idol for its upcoming eleventh season, I proposed the idea that the show should introduce a list of 11 songs that would be banned from the live performance rounds on the grounds that they’ve been done to death in previous seasons. Lythgoe’s response caught me off guard: “Well, Mike, if you want to write down and send me 11 songs that you don’t want to hear again, I will put them through to the committee.”
Well, sir, you don’t have to ask me twice!

Pia Toscano is looking forward to releasing her first single "This Time" on July 12, but fans who are itching to get the first taste of her upcoming debut won't have to wait until next week to listen to the song. She has showcased it live for the first time ever during "American Idol" tour opener on July 6, and footage from the concert hit the web one day after.
Co-written and co-produced by Ester Dean, the song starts with an acoustic guitar and a simple beat. It's about going through a rough break-up and finding her true happiness. "Don't try to stop me with the words you say/ 'cause I'm sick and tired of the game you play/ Gonna bring myself gonna make the change/ And like a butterfly Imma spread my wings," Pia belted out its lyrics.

2011 "American Idol" summer tour has officially been kicked off on July 6. Casey Abrams, Haley Reinhart, Jacob Lusk, James Durbin, Lauren Alaina, Naima Adedapo, Paul McDonald, Pia Toscano, Scotty McCreery, Stefano Langone and Thia Megia made their live performances in front of their fans in the Salt Lake City.
One of the highlights from the Wednesday concert was the live showcase of Pia's debut single "This Time". The rumored girlfriend of Mark Ballas gave concertgoers the first listen to the Ester Dean-written single after Naima finished her solo set with a rendition of Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor".
According to USA Today, the song starts with little more than an acoustic guitar and a simple beat. It later steadily builds to a big, singalong chorus, anchored by the lyrical hook of "This time, I'm gonna do it my way." The song will officially be released on July 12, and is...

The confetti’s been swept up. The summer tour dates have been announced. And Scotty McCreery’s “I Love You This Big” is headed for a date with country radio. All of which is another way of saying that American Idol‘s 11th season is a mere seven months away.
With that in mind, I sat down and hammered out a list of 10 changes I’d make to the Idol machine to keep it humming along in high-rated, entertaining fashion. Check out my list of proposed tweaks, then hit the comments and suggest your own!

Thia Megia doesn’t mind a little tough love. The American Idol Season 10 finalist says “vocal coach from hell” Peggi Blu is one of the best mentors in the business. Thia is full of other surprises, too. In her Idoloonies interview, the teenage contestant talks about why waiting a few years to audition for Idol was never an option, how the stripped-down arrangement of her semifinal performance of “Out Here on My Own” came to be, and which of her iTunes recordings might turn you into a fan. It was quite a spectacular night at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live Wednesday night for the American Idol Season 10 finale. Two very young country hopefuls were in the music battle of their lives but first, today’s music idols took over the stage for a two hour extravaganza.
The first hour featured performances by the reunited Top 13 finalists, Judas Priest, Kirk Franklin and Gladys Knight, Jack Black, Beyoncé, Tony Bennett, Lil Jon and TLC, and Tim McGraw. The top 13 performed Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” which wasn’t wonderful…the former contestants aren’t exactly in a glee club. James Durbin seemed to have quite a blast performing with Judas Priest just as Jacob Lusk seemed to be having the time of his life performing “Smile” with Kirk Franklin and Gladys Knight. Finale night was not only a treat for the final two but a reward for the...

The newly chosen winner sang his new single “I Love You This Big” after the announcement, which came after a record-breaking 122 million votes. Some of the biggest duets of the night included fourth place contestant James Durbin singing “Living After Midnight” and “Breaking the Law” with Judas Priest. The female contestants, including Alaina, Naima Adedapo, Ashthon Jones, Thia Megia, Haley Reinhart, Karen Rodriguez and Pia Toscano, sang melodys of Beyonce and TLC songs with the famous singers. "American Idol's" Season 10 grand finale on Wednesday, May 25, played host to a slew of great performances, which included Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Steven Tyler(!!) and many, many more.
Some of the Season 10 contestants (And none for Thia Megia. Bye! We jest!) got the chance to sing alongside their idols, including winner Scotty McCreery, who performed "Live Like You Were Dying" with one of his heroes, country superstar Tim McGraw.
After the show, Scotty talked about performing with his idol, who he calls his "Country Dad." All together now: Aw!
"Tim McGraw, he was like my Country Dad for rehearsals and stuff, he really was. All the advice he was giving me, it was crazy," Scotty said. "Picking his brain and getting the wisdom that he has, it was a a really special moment for me."
Scotty continued, "He's a really genuine, nice guy."

Lady GaGa and Beyonce Knowles, who served as guest mentors on a previous separate week of "American Idol", were two of the many musical guests at the finale of the singing competition on May 25. The former was bathed in blue lights as she performed "The Edge of Glory", while the latter belted out a live version of "1+1" with red lights and smoke surrounding her.
Appearing high atop the stage, GaGa was dressed in a long cape and a bedazzled headpiece which has chains hanging on it. The Mother Monster delivered the first verse of the song before ditching the headpiece to reveal a warrior-type outfit. Halfway through the performance, she was joined by saxophonist Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.
As for Beyonce, the R&B diva sang piano-led ballad "1+1" in a solo set, showcasing a stunning vocal performance. "This is my favorite song," she said of...

The ladies of "American Idol" proved it during Wednesday's (May 25) season-closer when they performed a medley of Beyoncé hits, and were joined at the finish by Beyoncé herself.
The girls — Pia Toscano, Karen Rodriguez, Naima Adedapo, Ashthon Jones, Thia Megia and Haley Reinhart — hit the stage in various red-and-black ensembles and shared the stage during B's #1 smash "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." Adedapo opened the song and threw some sass on it before passing the mic to Jones, the season's 13th-place finisher, who was eliminated during the first week of semifinals competition. The girls took their turns with the vocals and aped the familiar moves from the single's iconic video, which one rapper sort-of...

The judges and producers try to make the claim every year, but I think there's a plausible argument to be made that "American Idol" Season 10 had the deepest talent pool in the show's history. Not only did this season have a Top 13 that was embarrassment-free -- Ashthon Jones and Thia Megia were, at worst, occasionally worthy mediocrities -- but a slightly erratic cut-down from the Top 24 cost us plausible hopefuls like Lauren Turner, Robbie Rosen and Kendra Chantelle, plus early candidates like Jordan Dorsey, Rachel Zevita and Julie Zorrilla, who looked liked contenders during the audition episodes,...

We learned last night which American Idol contestants will be advancing to the finals. But what I really want to know is: Who will the Top 13 sing with in the finale? Now, we know every year, the Fox series trots out A-list musical acts (like the rumored Bono; Fox is not commenting on whether or not he will really appear on the season 10 finale) to sing alongside a good number of finalists. So now it’s time to create our wish lists: If every member of the Top 13 were to sing with a superstar, which would you choose for them?...

Thursday night’s installment of American Idol wasn’t so much a results show as it was a series of distinct promotional opportunities. Jennifer Lopez took a break from her grueling work behind the Idol judges’ table to hawk her two latest singles and herald the return of the saggy genie pant. Steven Tyler woke up from his long season’s nap to move a couple copies of his memoir. That horrible British guy who insulted Stefano Langone’s mother’s cooking tried to whip up some buzz for another one of his TV shows that I have no interest in watching.

A sudden rush of panic filled my chest at the start of American Idol‘s Top 6 performance episode Wednesday night. All season long, I’ve been craving genuine musical and emotional moments from the contestants (and to a lesser extent, the judges), and what’s the first thing I see? Costumes! Jennifer Lopez dressed as a tasteful figure skater. Randy Jackson imitating a dandy school boy. And Jacob Lusk channeling a pre-makeup Fizbo the Clown.

Dancing with the Stars professional Mark Ballas was among the audience members at the American Idol live performance show this week. The dancer, who has been romantically linked to Idol eliminee Pia Toscano, was spotted watching the Top 7 performances on Wednesday night with his father Corky. At one point, host Ryan Seacrest approached him to ask if he had a favorite Idol contestant, to which Ballas said that he is supporting Casey Abrams, prompting Seacrest to joke that he gave a "curveball" answer.
