In early 2019, we brought you the exclusive trailer premiere of Black Lake, and we're happy to share with Daily Dead readers the brand new trailer from K/XI's Maya! Tackling sociopolitical topics through a story of jinn possession, Maya was shot entirely in Pakistan and in the Urdu language:
"After a childhood incident leaves her without any memories, Maya is adopted by an elderly couple, along with another orphan, Kalika, who she forms a sisterly bond with. Through feverish nightmares and unsettling events, Maya travels to Karachi and rediscovers her traumatic childhood through the grips of jinn (demonic) possession.
'Maya' focuses on themes including cultural and social issues, religion, mental health, and the supernatural. It also has a strong focus on the representation of women in Pakistan."

Remember 2011? Not a particularly memorable year, but some highlights stand out. That was the year Obama released his long form birth certificate, it was the year of a major tsunami hitting Japan, it was the year we got Osama bin Laden…it was also the year of 27 sequels.
27 Sequels!?!
Yeah, that sounds like a bad title to 26 Sequels, my favorite Cambodian/Peruvian film (sarcasm), but how crazy is that? Now, I want to point out that this year…it’s 30. That’s right, 30 sequels. This isn’t counting reboots mind you, or universe expanding films, this is the straight sequel. “We are carrying out the story from one onto the next, enjoy it.” That kind of sequel.
Before you grab your pitchforks and torches, and certainly before you start screaming: “Hollywood Has No Original Ideals! Booo, Protest! Hiss! Rabble Rabble,” you need to hear me out on this.

Tiff has come and gone. Masses of Canadians attend the festival which is what gives it such a special atmosphere. In Cannes, only the industry attends the festival; the public sets up chairs and ladders to watch the red carpet galas and take pictures. But here the public is as much a part of the festival as the industry.Tiff Bell Lightbox
The industry action which consists of buying and selling of film rights takes place at the Hyatt Hotel on King Street West. The screenings for both public and industry are down the street at the Tiff Bell Lightbox and around the corner at the Scotia Multiplex. The dense mingling of public and industry at these venues and on the street itself which is closed to traffic for the first weekend but is open to pedestrians, photo-op spots, food trucks creates a festive bevvy of activity to the city.

Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
City of Tiny Lights (Pete Travis)
Small-time private detective Tommy Akhtar (Riz Ahmed) has all the swagger of a hard-boiled snoop: leather jacket on his shoulders and cigarette in his mouth, leaning against London architecture in the darkened night. His office resides above some shops, he makes friendly with local convenience store owner Mrs. Elbaz (Myriam Acharki), and asks new clients where they found him because he’s not advertising in the paper.

With Oscar voting currently underway, what better time for the Academy to remember the exemplary work of Best Actress contender and the woman Stephen Colbert recently called “the French Meryl Streep,” Isabelle Huppert? Or maybe you’re like the rest of us, a lowly Huppert connoisseur who just likes to appreciate the French actress’ immense talents.

“Downton Abbey” fan favorite Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil!) is back on the screen, and in a very different kind of period piece. The British actress stars as a delightfully unexpected heroine in Simon Aboud’s upcoming feature, “This Beautiful Fantastic,” one that smacks of “Amelie” and “Populaire” in equal parts. In the film, Findlay stars as the industrious Bella Brown, who has big dreams of writing and illustrating her own children’s book, though life — of course — has different ideas in store for her.

Pop some popcorn and get your ducks in a row. The documentary “The Million Dollar Duck” wings its way to Animal Planet to unveil the real drama behind the Federal Duck Stamp Contest, which was a minor subplot in the Coen Brothers’ 1996 film “Fargo.”
The annual contest, which began in 1934 with the aim to raise money for wildlife conservation, pits artists from around the country in a duck-themed paint-off. After a panel of five judges weigh in, a winner is chosen, and with that victory comes prestige, bragging rights and the promise of financial reward.

As we head into this years Survivor Series there’s not only the loss of the current WWE champion to deal with but also an apparent terrorist threat to deal with too. No wonder the WWE let Lillian Garcia blast out “The Star Spangled Banner” as loud and as bold as as she possibly could! That aside, It will be interesting to see where the 2015 Survivor Series is headed given the almost ramshackle last-minute nature in which the matches seem to have been put together… Of course what was planned on was the celebration of 25 years of the Phenom himself, The Undertaker. After all, 1990′s Survivor Series (yes, the event has been going that long) was the official debut of Mark Calaway’s now-iconic character in the WWE.
As always Spoilers if you haven’t seen the PPV yet…
