It has been over a year since the previous production of The Toxic Avenger The Musical in London, but the opening night for the West End debut last night proved that it was worth the wait. Composed by Memphis writer Joe Dipietro and Bon Jovi keyboard/vocalist David Bryan, the musical encompasses the tongue in cheek element of Lloyd Kaufmans; original film The Toxic Avenger (1984), whilst adding their own unique take on the story.

I know you have just come back from the Cannes festival, where you premiered Return To Nuke ‘Em High Vol. 2 (2017). Can you tell me what your experience was like in Cannes this year?
It’s getting more and more difficult at the Cannes film festival for independent movie artists to do publicity, unless they have the hundred thousand dollar posters or the money for the big party that worships the shrine of money and jewellery and fashion. Cannes is more about the jewellery and fashion than it is about movies. It’s clear the Cannes film festival does not want any independent movie there that is not part of the elite, that’s not part of the club, that is not part of the very refined fascist mentality. I think they show good movies, but if those good movies are not in with the club, forget it. Troma is famous.

I remember growing up when the real super heroes wore tutu’s and carried a mop. This may sound strange to some people, but I can assure you this wasn’t a weird childhood fantasy, I am talking about the original avenger Toxie, in The Toxic Avenger (1984). I have enjoyed the continuing story of ‘The Toxic Avenger’ which includes 3 sequels and a children’s cartoon, so when I heard that they would be continuing the story with a new rock musical I was eager to check it out.
I originally saw the musical version of The Toxic Avenger during a limited run at the Southwark Playhouse in 2016 and it was one of the best musicals I have seen. The show is in keeping with the dark violent humour of the original films and had me laughing throughout. The fact it is a musical may not appeal to everyone, but Toxie...

Following a sold-out UK premiere at Southwark Playhouse where it received six Off West End Award nominations including Best New Musical, cult rock musical The Toxic Avenger is transferring to the Arts Theatre (just down the road from Orbital Comics, making this a great nerdy day out) for a strictly limited season; and Nerdly will [hopefully] be there for the first Saturday matinee – after all, how could we miss out on seeing one of our favourite franchises turned into a musical? It worked for Evil Dead (which we saw years ago in Toronto) so we’re looking forward to seeing how Toxie comes across on stage!
From the press release:
Toxie, a mutant freak with superhuman strength and a supersized heart is out to save New Jersey, end global warming and win the heart of his beloved. Laugh, scream and sing as Toxie rocks the house and saves the day.

Long-time readers of S&A may remember our coverage of this Broadway musical in 2010, when it was rumored that the musical had drawn Hollywood's interest - specifically, Justin Timberlake was reportedly interested in adapting the musical to film, likely as a starring vehicle for himself; It was also rumored that director Oliver Stone, who was said to be a big fan of the show, had been meeting and talking with David Bryan, one of the show's creators and its composer, expressing his interest in making a film out of it. Those were 2 separate interests, by the way; and I emphasize that neither was officially confirmed. The Tony Award-winning...

New York — There was a time when most of the songs played on the radio came from Broadway. Now some popular hit makers like Cyndi Lauper and Sting are finding it still feels like home.
"Look, they don't break your balls that much here," Lauper said of the experience of composing "Kinky Boots," her debut musical. "Know what I'm saying? They don't friggin' aggravate you as much."
More and more singer-songwriters from the pop world seem to be hearing that siren song: The trickle of pop and rock stars turning to the stage is fast becoming a flood.
Besides Sting and Lauper, stars such as Sheryl Crow, John Mellencamp, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Edie Brickell, David Byrne, Fatboy Slim, Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello and The Flaming Lips are making musicals.
The reasons are as varied as the different sounds those artists create: Broadway represents a new challenge. Or it offers...

Oscar voting has closed, so I can say this: Robert DeNiro can do anything. And so now, the nominee for “Silver Linings Playbook” is taking on his bravest project yet. He’s going to direct the Broadway musical of “A Bronx Tale,” the movie he directed in 1993. Chazz Palminteri, who wrote the original movie and acted in and the Broadway play (which he also wrote), is writing the book for the musical now. David Bryan of Bon Jovi, who won the Tony for “Memphis,” is writing the songs. (Expect a lot of doo wop– they should call Richard Perry.) Sergio Trujillo — of Jersey Boys and Addams Family fame– is working on the choreography. I know all this because the one and only Tommy Mottola is producing the musical, and he told me all about it yesterday. (Mottola is in partnership with Broadway’s The Dodgers.) Tommy and I were talking about his own musical memoir,...

The path from Broadway often leads from the stage to the screen when you have a successful show, and the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis is the latest to pack up and head from NYC to Hollywood for a film adaptation. The New York Times reports that the show, which won best musical, best score, best book, and best orchestration at the 2010 Tonys, is making the jump to the big screen and one of the film's writers is coming along with it. Joe Dipietro, who co-wrote the book and lyrics with David Bryan, will be writing the screenplay, so fans of the stage production can rest easy about this one getting a faithful adaptation on film. Here's a taste of one of the musical numbers from Memphis performed at the Tony Awards: The story follows a white radio DJ named Huey Calhoun in the 1950s, who breaks convention by playing what...

Chicago – Sometimes high energy and spirited charisma are enough to redeem a mediocre musical, and that is precisely what “Memphis” has in spades. It’s not a wholly derivative show by any means, but it does tread through familiar troubled waters. Modern Broadway classics like “Hairspray” have already effectively illustrated that “Rock ’n’ roll is just Negro blues sped up.”
That memorable line is delivered late in “Memphis” by Felicia Ferrell (Montego Glover), a black club singer who becomes a singing sensation once she’s discovered by a smitten white DJ, Huey Calhoun (Chad Kimball), a character loosely based on Dewey Phillips. Racial tensions dissolve as music proves to be a uniting force. Yet while still under the threat of attacks in the ’50s-era South, Huey and Felicia must decide whether to stay put or make the move to the Big Apple.
