“Tehran Taboo” doesn't hold anything back, save for the fact that it is animated. In Ali Soozandeh's wild rotoscoped debut feature, he depicts the increasingly entangled stories of three people in Tehran. Pari (Elmira Rafizadeh), a street-savvy but jaded sex worker demands a divorce and an education for her mute son. Sara (Zar Amir Ebrahimi), a soft-spoken pregnant woman seeks work despite her husband's strict orders to stay at home “for the baby's sake.” Finally, Babak (Arash Marandi), a struggling musician, is flung into an absurd search to replicate an unbroken hymen for his one-night stand. In the trio's search for propriety in Tehran's underbelly, the three find that their worlds, strangely, overlap more than they initially thought.
Their growing kinship is made clear at the turning point of the film, when Sara joins her neighbor, Pari, at her veranda. Perhaps, in a different world, they wouldn't have met at all.

Revel in Ana Lily Amirpour's ‘Bad City' where the luscious chiaroscuro of depravity meets style and substance in the first ‘Iranian vampire western' -coined by the UCLA graduate with her feature directorial debut. Like a deconstructed horror film, “Agwhaan” glides across a spectrum of genres in a way that presents some incredibly visceral iconography that feels eerily familiar but also hauntingly avant-garde all at once.

Want to enhance your horror movie? Make sure you sign up a cat...
This feature contains broad spoilers for several horror movies featuring cats, including Alien, Cat People, Drag Me To Hell, Fallen, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Pet Sematary and The Voices.
The relationship between humans and cats over time has given way to a number of cultural impressions and outright superstitions. Ancient Egyptians associated them with gods. In the Middle Ages, they were linked with witches and killed en masse, which probably hastened the spread of the Black Plague through the rodent population. And in the modern day, it's interchangeably lucky or not if a black cat crosses your path.
Like anything with such a wide array of symbolic links, movies have presented cats as characters in different ways over the years. It's their abiding association with the supernatural – whether as an omen...

"There's no escape from them." Vertical Ent. has unveiled the Us trailer for a horror-thriller called Under the Shadow, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year. This outstanding ghost story is set in Tehran and stars Narges Rashidi and Avin Manshadi as mother and daughter who are haunted by a malevolent spirit after an unexploded bomb crashes into the apartment above theirs. Also features Bobby Naderi, Ray Haratian and Arash Marandi. I saw this at Sundance and loved it, writing in my review it's a "simple, sleek, well-made film that above all is efficient in telling a creepy ghost story." Don't skip this one. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Babak Anvari's Under the Shadow, originally from Yahoo: As a mother and daughter struggle to cope with the terrors of the post-revolution, war torn Tehran of the 80s, a mysterious evil begins to haunt their home.

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

As we near the end of the calendar year, there is still plenty to look forward to in cinema – and not just the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December. Yes, as we barrel down on the industry’s undisputed purple patch, our local theaters will soon become brimming with awards contenders each out to stake a claim for that coveted Oscar trophy.
Much like previous years, the Academy’s presentation will take place in February, and it’ll be preceded by the Sundance Film Festival one month prior. Returning for its 32nd year on the festival circuit, the Midnight selection has been formally revealed, confirming such entires as Rob Zombie’s horror 31 along with the Kevin Smith-directed college flick, Yoga Hosers.

A change of pace for Sundance Film Festival, before we get their competition films (and much more), they’ve first unveiled their midnight line-up for 2016. Among the notable titles are the latest films from Rob Zombie and Kevin Smith, 31 and Yoga Hosers, respectively. However, what keeps me coming back to Park City are the surprises, so there’s also a handful of features from relatively unknown directors that have caught our eye, including Carnage Park and Under the Shadow. Check out the line-up below, along with debut images, and return for our coverage in around two months.
31 / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Rob Zombie) — Five friends are kidnapped on the day before Halloween and are held hostage in a terrifying place named Murder World. While trapped, they must play a violent game called 31, in which the mission is to survive 12 hours against a gang of evil clowns. Cast: Sheri Moon Zombie,...

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014)
Written by: Ana Lily Amirpour
Directed by: Ana Lily Amirpour
Cast: Sheila Vand (The Girl), Arash (Arash Marandi), Marshall Manesh (Hossein the Junkie), Mozhan Marno (Atti the Prostitute), Dominic Rains (Saeed the Pimp), Rome Shadanloo (Shaydah the Princess), Ray Haratian (The Boss), Pej Vahdat (DJ Porno), Ana Lily Amirpour (Skeleton Partygirl), Masuka (Masuka the Cat)
There are two things that have inhibited me in the past from broadening my horror film horizons. Those things would be subtitles and anything filmed in black and white. I’ve conquered my perceived drudgery of reading subtitles, and after many forced exercises to multitask my watching and reading simultaneously, I can get lost in a really good horror movie, and the subtitles come as second nature. I’m still struggling with the black and white. Even established classics such as “Night of the Living Dead...

The phrase “first Iranian vampire western” will follow A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, and its director Anna Lily Amirpour, until the end of cinema itself. A year and a half after it glided sexily into Sundance, the movie has made waves for its genre play, for Sheila Vand’s already iconic vampire look, and for its incredible, eclectic soundtrack. The movie has been in vogue ever since, even though there appears to be little beneath its chador-clad exterior to chew upon. Part of the explanation is never mentioned in its buzzy tagline, but most of the attraction is really down to its story of misfit rebellion, a James Dean tale with a Donnie Darko-esque soundtrack, by way of Iran.
There are, as is frequently mentioned, a lot of similarities with Jim Jarmusch’s earlier movies Stranger Than Paradise or Down By Law. This extends beyond the black-and-white shots of urban tedium,...

Ana Lily Amirpour’s feature debut is a bloody triumph…
Iranian-American writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour describes her weirdly exhilarating feature debut, which premiered at Sundance last year, as the Iranian love-child of Sergio Leone and David Lynch, with Nosferatu as a babysitter. It is set in the fictional Iranian ghost town of Bad City (the name nods toward Frank Miller’s Sin City) and plays out like the missing link between Kathryn Bigelow’s first two features; the ultra-cool biker pastiche The Loveless and the latterday vampire flick Near Dark. It is steeped in the pop iconography of the past, yet its crystalline anamorphic black-and-white photography has an unmistakably contemporary edge. Cinematically, it exists in a twilight zone between nations (American locations, Iranian culture), between centuries (late 19th and early 21st), between languages (Persian dialogue, silent cinema gestures) and, most importantly, between genres.

Hailed as one of the best new cinematic discoveries in 2014 is director Ana Lily Amirpour with her debut A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, a moody vampire noir that premiered in the Next section at the Sundance Film Festival. Scooping up the Gotham Award’s Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award and picking up a pair of Indie Spirit Award nominations (including Best First Feature) and wins at international film fests such as Deauville and Sitges, the film opened theatrically in the fall of 2014 to a barrage of critical acclaim. Credited as the first Iranian Vampire Western, Amirpour is operating with a mash-up of vintage tropes, creating an inspired concoction.

The Iranian skateboarding vampire feminist spaghetti western we have all been waiting for, creepy cool and gorgeously sinister, engorged with suspense and desire. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

This is the “Iranian vampire spaghetti western” you’ve likely heard about. Iranian-American filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour dubbed her debut film that herself, and I’ll cram two more modifiers in there: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is the Iranian skateboarding vampire feminist spaghetti western we have all been waiting for. We just didn’t realize it till now. The tiny release it had in the U.S. last autumn (after its acclaimed appearance at 2014 Sundance) meant not many people had a chance to see it, but now it’s available on demand (it opens theatrically in the U.K. in May), and I...

I can’t decide if Ana Lily Amirpour’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is the most original film of the year, or the most familiar. A glance at the concept — a black-and-white Iranian feminist vampire Western romance, shot entirely in Farsi somewhere in Southern California — would suggest the former. And to be fair, it’s wonderfully inventive filmmaking: Amirpour’s striking compositions borrow from the iconography of both the Western and the horror film — wide, evocative vistas are intercut with dark, tense city streets where shadowy figures follow one another. But the director also draws playful connections between these genres and the symbols of modern Iran: Oil derricks spot the landscape, and the chador becomes an unlikely horror vestment. The whole movie exists in a netherworld that is impossible, but somehow also feels right. The story Amirpour tells is full of familiar, perhaps even generic elements. Arash...

A long time in the making, Reach Me, from filmmaker/actor John Herzfeld brings ‘positive thinking’ and ‘self-help’ to the big screen. It stars a bevy of Herzfeld’s actor friends and friends of friends, including Sylvester Stallone, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Connolly.
The title is one of a dozen or so newcomers opening in limited release this weekend. Music Box’s Happy Valley and Kino Lorber’s Monk With A Camera are among Friday’s debuting documentaries.
Happy Valley, named after the area where Pennsylvania State University is located, dives into the child sexual-abuse scandal that rocked Penn State, while Monk looks at an unlikely ascetic who gave up life in the fast lane.
Kino Lorber also is launching Iranian Western Vampire pic A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, which it is releasing with Vice Films. The title, which was born out of a previous short film, debuted at Sundance in January.

Walking After Midnight: Amirpour’s Expressive, Moody Debut
Described as an Iranian vampire film with all its characters speaking Farsi, yet filmed in California and set in the fictional locale of Bad City, there is an enigmatic, surreal aura to Ana Lily Amirpour’s exciting debut, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. An exploration of loneliness utilizing a set of nighttime creatures while evoking nostalgic cinematic traditions of the film noir and the adolescent rebel, Amirpour’s ambient film is startling in its rendering of expressive black and white cinematography in a film whose themes and sound designs recall the alternate universes of David Lynch.
Living at home with his junkie father (Marshall Manesh), Arash (Arash Marandi) is forced to give up the car he’s finally paid off to Saeed (Dominic Rains), the dealer and pimp to whom Arash’s father owes a large sum of money. Saeed...

People are living in the Iranian town of Bad City, but there is very little life. A dry riverbed is home to an ever-growing pile of dead bodies that no one seems to notice or care about, the streets are mostly empty of people but saturated in their despair and the only constant is the hum of oil well machinery pulling the earth’s black life-blood from beneath the surface. Arash (Arash Marandi) stands apart with his blue jeans, white tee-shirt and classic American car — one it took him 2,191 days of work to afford — but it’s his ambition for something more than this dead-end town can offer that keeps him moving. His dreams take a hit thanks to his junkie father and a local thug, but something dark and wondrous is just around the corner. Drifting through the night is a young woman (Sheila Vand) whose casual dress is complemented by a jet black chador, and...

In the fictitious town known as Bad City, everyone is struggling to survive another night. Personal woes and financial struggles plague Arash (Arash Marandi) and the other residents. So mush so that the film even opens with a young homeless boy asking Arash for some cash, only to be met with the question, “Do you know how long I worked to pay for this car?” More problems arise though when a mysterious young woman (Sheila Vand) enters his life. Their budding romance gives way to a sense of uneasiness as Arash’s cloaked beauty attempts to hide her bloodthirsty ways.

A vampire in a hijab is such a provocative image that I’m surprised it’s never been used before. This mashup of predatory, sexually charged vampire imagery and the hijab’s minimizing of a woman’s personality, body and mobility makes for a cracking incongruity that director Ana Lily Amirpour exploits to the max, turning a clumsy mass of heavy black cloth into her vampire antiheroine’s bat-wings.
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is set in Bad City, located in a bizarre future Iran. The streets are largely devoid of life and the inhabitants all housebound drug addicts or walled-in rich. The camera pans around the empty city, casually showing us a river bed full of rotting corpses. What the hell has gone wrong in this world?
Our hero is Arash (Arash Marandi), a young landscape gardener with nothing to his name other than a cool car.

Sundance Institute today announced the films and music acts that will headline the Sundance Next Fest summer festival August 7-10 in Los Angeles. Next Fest, headquartered at the Theatre at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, celebrates the intersection of film and music and the renegade spirit of independent artists. Tickets ($15-25) go on sale to Sundance Institute members today and all others tomorrow at sundance.org/next
In addition to a 10th Anniversary screening of "Napoleon Dynamite" with Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery as the festival’s kickoff event on August 7, Next Fest will present the Los Angeles premieres of six films that first screened at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and offer unfettered creativity and fresh perspectives. The program features a zombie love story, an Iranian-set vampire movie, a modern tale of buried treasure, a thriller about a mysterious soldier, and films that explore the perils of artistic ambition amongst gang life in Watts and the literary world of New York respectively.
Each film screens once at the Theatre at Ace Hotel August 8-10 and will be paired with either a special music act that shares a complementary artistic sensibility or conversations that bring together filmmakers with those who inspired them. The Sundance Film Festival programming staff selected the films and music acts for Next Fest.
The festival is an extension of the popular Next <=> section at the Sundance Film Festival, which showcases stylistically adventurous and bold films, and builds on the Institute’s Next Weekend event, hosted in 2013.

The Theatre at Ace Hotel, with its roots in cinematic trailblazing, will serve as the ideal hub for this cultural adventure.”

One of the more interesting horror films premiering at this year's Sundance Film Festival was no doubt A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, a release from Elijah Wood's company SpectreVision that's being billed as the world's first Iranian Vampire Western.
After months of silence the flick has finally found distro! Variety reports Kino Lorber has acquired the North American rights to the film a full five months after its world premiere at Sundance.
Directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night stars Sheila Vand, Arash Marandi, Dominic Rains, Marshall Manesh, Mozhan Marnó and Milad Eghbali.
Synopsis
Strange things are afoot in Bad City. The Iranian ghost town, home to prostitutes, junkies, pimps and other sordid souls, is a bastion of depravity and hopelessness where a lonely vampire stalks its most unsavory inhabitants. But when boy meets girl, an unusual love story begins to blossom…...

While dramas of drum players (Whiplash) and Somali pirates (Fishing without Nets) dominated the actual awards when it ended, the 2014 edition of the Sundance Film Festival was one of the most horror-friendly major fests in a long time. Programmers didn’t just relegate horror to the beloved Midnight slots, placing films with genre themes throughout the line-up, even in the coveted U.S. Competition and Next programs. At every turn, someone was talking about a horror film in Park City, whether it was a debut like Ana-Lily Amanpour’s vampire western A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, a festival regular like Adam Wingard with The Guest, or competition films Life After Beth, Jamie Marks is Dead, and Cold in July. And even with high-profile flicks like Cooties, What We Do in the Shadows, Killers, and Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead, the most-buzzed midnight film was a debut, Jennifer Kent’s excellent The Babadook.

A stylish and soulful film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a film of bad men, dangerous women, love and beautiful images. More than just a vampire film, Ana Lily Amirpour crafts an eerie, moody tone poem that’s a fantastic film to watch.
Bad City an industrial town, filled by all matter of folks from the scrupulous to the shady. Arash (Arash Marandi), one such citizen, longs to just get in his nice car and go. Working as a landscaper and living with his junkie father is proving more difficult, when his father runs afoul of a local drug dealer. A local prostitute (Mozhan Marnò) has just turned 30 and wants to escape as well. They all long for better lives, but are unable to move from their station. This relatively tranquil, yet unfulfilling existence, is slowly shattered as a vampire (Sheila Vand) begins stalking the streets,...

It’s funny how things start to pair up over festivals. You’ll notice themes across at least two films, maybe more. Could just be the exhaustion. The six films I’ve seen since I last filed a diary definitely partner nicely and yet one can also trace through lines through them, despite their completely different genres. Let’s get going…
The first pair are related by being so completely distinct in the history of film. There’s Steve James’ “Life Itself”, a documentary about the most important film critic of all time, and Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood”, a film with a production process like no other. These films represent a pair of experiences that I’ve never had before and likely will never have again. My personal connection to “Life Itself” made the world premiere an emotional, powerful night, and “Boyhood” the next morning took 12 years to make. The...
