There have been many classic movie comedies over the years featuring Black stars, ranging from Eddie Murphy's Coming to America to Whoopi Goldberg's Sister Act. Those films are among the many that resonated with Black audiences even though they were directed by white filmmakers. Despite that, Hollywood has also had a long tradition of Black directors creating movies aimed specifically at Black audiences; trailblazer Oscar Micheaux, in fact, is regarded as the first major Black filmmaker, directing and producing more than 40 so-called "race films" between 1919 and 1948.
These days, as Hollywood executives increasingly come to realize the importance of Black directors telling Black stories, there's been an ever-growing number of Black directors engaging in big-screen filmmaking, a trend that has been evident not just in dramas but in comedies as well. In fact, some of the most beloved comedies with predominantly Black casts featured Black directors at the helm. For the full picture,...

Nola Darling is going to need a longer summer. In the new Season Two trailer for Spike Lee’s Netflix show, She’s Gotta Have It, the Brooklyn protagonist (DeWanda Wise) declares a few not-so-modest goals to accomplish in three months: become a better painter, be a better romantic partner and “get that schmunny.”
Later in the clip, the character also reveals an equally ambitious goal: to expand beyond her painting and become a “multi-disciplinary” artist. But with the prospect of becoming a “broke artist” looming, she struggles with the...

The first season of Spike Lee’s “She’s Gotta Have It” TV series adaptation of his 1986 film ends on a high note, so to speak, when Brooklyn artist Nola Darling (DeWanda Wise) invites the three men in her life to an awkward but open Thanksgiving dinner that culminates in a pot-fueled dance party in her apartment. Wise spoke to IndieWire about a time jump and what else to expect when the show returns for Season 2.
“It’s 18 months later, so we all know what could happen in a-year-and-half’s time,” she said. “One of my favorite things …is thinking about my own career as an artist, you don’t come back to her and she’s super famous. We’re not coming back 18 months later and she’s like a super-accomplished, prolific, visual artist. No, she’s still fighting and struggling and working through issues.”

Anyone who has watched Netflix’s TV adaptation of Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It, the filmmaker’s acclaimed and controversial 1986 film debut, has not only noticed that DeWanda Wise has reinvented the iconic role of Nola Darling for a 2017 audience, but that her version of Nola wears a nose ring -- well, sometimes.
There's a pattern to when and why the Fort Greene, Brooklyn-based polyamorous artist dons the accessory: when she's about to -- or has had -- sex with one of her three male partners.
And it was all Wise's idea.
"Sex for Nola is more than this physical act. That's why there are candles. It's this thing that's deeply imbued in ritual, and it was like a facet of the ritual that I contributed to Nola," she tells Et. Anyone looking to escape their own awkward Thanksgiving dinners by bingeing “She’s Gotta Have It” was in for a rude awakening in the Season 1 finale. Determined to set the record straight for herself and her three beaus, Nola Darling (DeWanda Wise) invites each of her lovers over for a surprise meeting of the men. While the dining room table discussions are just as awkward as you can imagine — and more so once Nola reveals her latest artwork — the episode overall turned out to be a beautiful statement of autonomy, agency, and understanding, helped along by the night’s in memoriam honoree: Prince.
But we’ll get to Prince in a second. Given the events of the season, it felt inevitable Jamie Overstreet (Lyriq Bent), Greer Childs (Cleo Anthony), and Mars Blackmon (Anthony Ramos) had to meet. They had come close so many times, be it near run-ins around Fort...

"I want you to know the only reason I'm consenting to this is because I wish to clear my name." With those words, a twentysomething Brooklyn artist named Nola Darling introduced herself to the world – and, in the process, so did Spike Lee, a prodigiously talented twentysomething writer-director who invented the character for She's Gotta Have It, which hit theaters in the summer of 1986. Speaking directly to the camera, Nola (played by Tracy Camilla Johns) laid out her life's fundamental dilemma: how to be a free-thinking, independent woman who refused...

In 2017, “She’s Gotta Have It” may have more to say about men than women. Though primarily focused on the same independent woman from Spike Lee’s 1986 feature film — the sexually liberated Nola Darling, played here by DeWanda Wise — the series, directed in its entirety by Lee, often feels more focused on correcting men’s behavior than celebrating the singular human being at its core.
That’s not a damning issue, only a nagging one. Many, if not all, of the messages within Lee’s 10 episodes are valuable, insightful, and rarely so thoroughly discussed via a serialized narrative — not to mention told from a proudly black perspective. While the overriding educational value can lead to an academic disconnection at times, Lee’s revisitation is as singular and powerful today as it was 30 years ago.

Back in 1985, in his late ’20s, Spike Lee directed She’s Gotta Have It, his feature-film debut made in under two weeks for less than $200,000. Released in 1986, it became a landmark of American independent cinema, grossing over $7 million at the domestic box-office. Now, three decades later, he’s set to return to the story for a Netflix series.
THR reports that Lee will direct all 10 episodes of the first season of the show, which, much like the original, follows Nola Darling, an artist from Brooklyn who is “struggling to define herself and divide her time among her friends, her job and her three lovers: the cultured model, Greer Childs; the protective investment banker, Jamie Overstreet; and da original b-boy sneakerhead, Mars Blackmon.”

Today’s modern television culture has opened the floodgates for all sorts of creatives. In the past, TV was a medium that was oftentimes creatively constricting, and as such, many auteurs stuck to film, where their visions could flourish. The past decade has seen a definite shift away from episodic storytelling to more serialized content — content that could exist in an ongoing format or as a limited series.
This has attracted a good number of filmmakers and actors to the medium, who see unique opportunities. The latest filmmaker to make the jump from film to TV is Spike Lee, the director of such films as Malcolm X, Do the Right Thing, Inside Man, Bamboozled, and He Got Game. Now, according to Deadline, Netflix has just ordered a series from Spike Lee. The project: 10-episode re-imagining of Lee’s 1986 breakout film She’s Gotta Have It.
