In 2014, Wes Ball made his directorial debut with the dystopian science fiction film The Maze Runner which is based on James Dashner’s novel of the same name. The filmmaker subsequently went on to direct two more films in the franchise which follows the story of a teenager who is thrown into an intricate maze and must find his way out of it.

The central protagonist in the films was played by Dylan O’Brien who impressed with his performance in the trilogy. But the young actor who aptly developed the nuances of his character through the narratives, was initially not considered the perfect choice by Ball owing to a certain preconceived notion that he had of him.

Back in 2009, James Dashner released The Maze Runner, the first of what was to become a series of novels consisting of a main trilogy, two prequel novels, and a planned sequel trilogy, as well as a companion volume. The story is a dystopian narrative that focuses on a group of children who have to survive the Maze, but ultimately discover that the world they are in is in ruins and that there is a dark secret behind everything. The series was picked up for a live-action adaptation in 2011, and the first movie was released in 2014. Two additional movies were released, with The Death Cure ending the trilogy in 2018.
But, while it’s been just six years since the final movie of the original trilogy, The Hollywood Reporter revealed an exclusive scoop that 20th Century Studios is working on a reboot of The Maze Runner film series, although details are still very scarce.

A reboot of The Maze Runner is in the works at Disney!
The original film trilogy grossed more than $900 million worldwide and turned Dylan O’Brien into a household name. The three films, directed by Wes Ball and based on the best-selling books by James Dashner, were released by 20th Century Fox between 2014 and 2018.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the Disney’s 20th Century Studios is working on a reboot with Transcendence writer Jack Paglen in negotiations to write the script.
The original franchise followed “a group of teens who find themselves arriving in a walled setting named the Glade with their memories wiped out. Beyond the four walls of the encampment lies a maze, filled with deadly mechanical creatures and doors that shut every night at sundown. One new arrival figures out the key to the groups’ survival and attempts to lead them out.”
So, what will the reboot be about?...

According to THR, 20th Century Studios is looking to reboot The Maze Runner franchise based on the best-selling novels by James Dashner. The studio is currently in negotiations with Jack Paglen (Transcendence) to write the script for the new film.
The Maze Runner was released in 2014 and followed a group of memory-wiped teenagers who are trapped in a walled area known as the Glade. The only way out lies beyond an ever-changing maze, which is filled with deadly mechanical creatures. The film was followed by Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials in 2015 and Maze Runner: The Death Cure in 2018.
Before you start getting up in arms over 20th Century Studios rebooting a franchise which wrapped up less than a decade ago, sources say that this project won’t be a redo of the original story or a direct sequel. Instead, the producers hope to make it a “continuation of the story...

Jack Paglen (Transcendence) is in talks to write a new Maze Runner film for 20th Century Studios, Deadline can confirm.
While details as to the plot of the film are under wraps for the moment, it’s described as a continuation of the story of the last three films, released between 2014 and 2018, rather than a direct sequel.
Based on the dystopian YA book series by James Dashner, The Maze Runner takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where a group of young survivors must navigate deadly mazes, treacherous landscapes, and sinister organizations as they uncover the truth about their past and fight for their freedom. Wes Ball directed the original 2014 film, as well as sequels Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) and Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018), all ahead of Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario starred in the films, which grossed over $948 million worldwide in total.

The Maze Runner is back at the starting line.
20th Century Studios is rebooting the sci-fi action adventure franchise, which ran as a trilogy from 2014 to 2018.
The Disney arm is in negotiations to tap Jack Paglen, perhaps best known for writing the Johnny Depp-starring sci-fi movie Transcendence, to pen the script for a new installment.
Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman of Gotham Group and Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill, who produced the original trilogy, are back to produce this one. Wes Ball, who directed the original trilogy, will also be involved as a producer.

Throwing a bunch of teenagers into some sort of Gladiator-style arena is the pinnacle of young adult dystopian fiction, executed to perfection in franchises like "The Hunger Games." While "The Maze Runner" films also follow the same principle, the worldbuilding here is markedly different, woven deftly with interesting characters and plot developments that make it such an intriguing premise. With three movies that map the trajectory of such a grim world and its inhabitants, "The Maze Runner" emerges as a staple for those who wish to immerse themselves in its labyrinthine action and fantastical setting.
As "The Maze Runner" films are rather overlooked, at least in comparison to blockbuster offerings within the same genre, it can be a bit confusing for casual fans to denote its viewing order. Moreover, things get more complicated once we venture into its sprawling source material — James Dashner's "Maze Runner" novels extend beyond its theatrical counterparts,...

Science fiction is a fascinating film genre. It inspires dreams of extraterrestrial life, futuristic gadgets, and space travel. Today, this all seems more plausible than ever. Yet, besides reflecting society, sci-fi helps us evaluate our actions -- and their consequences.
Creating scenes with nail-biting stunts requires a collaborative effort between actors and directors. Replacing stars with stunt performers due to their physical capabilities usually works but mishaps can still happen --- both on and off camera. The film industry has seen an increase in accidents over the last decade despite the advancement of technology. According to the Los Angeles Times, from 2010 to 2019, 19 fatal injuries occurred on American film sets. As attorney Chris Deacon told the outlet, "If those engaged to work on set in whatever capacity are dying at the hands of the creative process, then something is fundamentally wrong in the production processes."
Sure, authenticity makes for a thrilling watch.

"The Maze Runner" series is a trilogy of films based on the James Dashner novels of the same names. In broad strokes, the story follows a group of children struggling to survive vicious experimentation at the hands of evil scientists in a post-apocalyptic America. Without spoiling too much, there's a murderous labyrinth infested by ... robot spider things, a zombie-adjacent virus culling the human population with savage accuracy, and global weather crises brought upon by catastrophic solar flares. If that sounds like a lot, that's because it is: Dashner piles his character under the titanic weight of tragedy.
And the movies reflect that, if not in a page-perfect onscreen depiction, then at least in spirit. The artistic team physically created a great portion of the first film's titular maze, and at no point during the cinematic trilogy did the Gladers (Dashner's in-canon name for the kids) catch a well-deserved break. That...

This may come as a culture shock but December isn't typically known as the best month for releasing science fiction media. People tend to expect magic and music and the strengthening of familial bonds, apparently. 'Tis the season and all that. Still, no amount of holiday spirit could halt the unyielding juggle which keeps streaming sites like Netflix and HBO Max above water. Most of the movies that will be released — or otherwise rereleased — during the upcoming December fall squarely into the fantasy genre but a small chunk is pure, undiluted science fiction.

If you’ve watched the “Maze Runner” movies, you know who Dexter Darden is — he plays the ever-present Frypan, a character who, while not quite at the forefront, is always a major player in whatever is going on. And Darden told TheWrap that fans of the book series were not always happy with his involvement with the films.
“Originally, they weren’t very happy, because Frypan in the books wasn’t necessarily a man of color,” Darded explained, describing a phenomenon that has occurred fairly often when a black actor is cast as a character who is not black in the source material. See, for example, Idris Elba in the “Thor” films, which was met with a similarly irrational outcry from some fans at first. But as is usually the case with these sorts of “controversies,” the situation calmed down once the first movie came out.
“So they weren’t really the most excited about that, but Wes Ball and James Dashner had kinda come to the conclusion that, look, in the book it just says that he’s a chubby guy with nappy hair, so it’s like, if Dexter gains 15 pounds he could really be any ethnicity. Although it does say he has red hair. So it was a little bit mixed in the beginning, but since then the fans have literally been the most amazing. Like literally the most amazing, incredible support.”

Darden said the eventual positive response only grew when Frypan got into more of the action in “The Death Cure,” which lands on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K today.
“In the third one I think fans are really happy to see me kinda come to the forefront and step up to the plate and really showcase what my abilities are and what I can provide to the character and what I can provide to the team,” Darden said. “And so the outcry on social media, and fan mail as well, has just been incredible and this has been something I’ve been very fortunate to experience.”
Darden told me that earlier in his budding career, the types of roles he was able to audition for and would be offered seemed to, as the story in Hollywood so often goes, be dictated by racial stereotypes — but he seemed to think the situation is improving somewhat.
” ‘Rush Hour’ is my favorite movie of all time, so that’s kind of where I was aspiring to be — in a movie where a black guy can play opposite of an Asian man, and then it becomes one of the biggest franchises in the world. That’s what I love, and I feel like we’ve kinda gotten away from that a little bit, and it became a bit scary, And I was just getting roles and auditions for guys who are just a gangbanger on the corner, or the guy whose father or mother’s abandoned them and they don’t really have a life to look forward to,” Darden said. “But now I think with the cultural diversity and what movies like ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise are doing and ‘Get Out’ and the opportunities that they’re allowing are making that more popular again and giving us the opportunity to play roles outside of the basic stereotype that the black male is categorized in.”

We also discussed the significance of Darden, as a black man, simply existing in Hollywood and as a key part of this film franchise in Donald Trump’s America — a time in which profound political and cultural divides that many had thought, or at least pretended to think, were fading have reasserted themselves in force.
“It’s always been apparent. It’s always been something that’s overwhelming and one of those things that you just kind of have to come to grips with and operate through. I think with the way our country is going now, and that cultural divide being so prevalent, people are becoming a little bit more bold in their beliefs and their racism,” Darden said, before describing how this new “family” he’s developed with his “Maze Runner” castmates has certainly been a boon though all this.
“What I do know is I’m fortunate now to have a platform to keep developing and building myself as an individual to the point where I have a voice, in the sense of speaking out on certain matters — whether the president of the United States is being racist and sexist in this specific moment,” Darden said. “And I have the opportunity to stand up for like a sister like a Rosa Salazar or Kaya Scodelario, or have the bravado to speak up for my brother like a Ki Hong Lee, who is an Asian-American male, and not necessarily feeling like he has to be outcast because of his ethnic and historical or cultural background.

“While also standing alongside a brother like a Dylan O’Brien, who you know is a caucasian male, grew up in the States, who doesn’t believe in those kinds of things. We can stand by each other and have each other’s support. And that’s one of the things that’s so beautiful about “Maze Runner” and my castmates, who I love and who will be my family for the rest of my life, is that we always will have each other’s backs, regardless of the color of our skin or where we come from.”

The “Maze Runer” trilogy of movies may not be your bag, but it’s certainly mine. And for the past four years, I’ve had a blast experiencing this tale of a horrible post-apocalyptic conservative dystopia taken down by children. In the present age, these stories somehow seem to gain more and more relevance, and that certainly was the case with “The Death Cure,” the third and final installment released in January.
TheWrap has exclusively obtained a clip from the special features on the home video release of “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” in which cast members Patricia Clarkson, Kaya Scodelario and Rosa Salazar honor director Wes Ball’s dedication to bringing these stories to life on the big screen, and Ball himself reflects on the experience.
The “Maze Runner” films are Ball’s first three gigs directing feature films, and he calls himself “lucky” for having been blessed with having the chance to work with this team on these particular projects.

“Maze Runner” author James Dashner has been dropped by his literary agent and publishing company in the wake of sexual misconduct accusations against him. “Random House Children’s Books, Random House Publishing Group, and Penguin Random House Audio will not be publishing any future books by James Dashner,” Random House said in a statement, obtained by Entertainment Weekly and several other outlets. Dashner has been with the publishing company for the past decade, most famously for his “Maze Runner” series. Most recently, Dashner was working on his first adult novel for Random House, titled “The Walking.” Also Read: '13 Reasons Why' Author Jay Asher...

After facing allegations of sexual misconduct, The Maze Runner author James Dashner said he's "deeply sorry" and is seeking counseling. The author of the young-adult series tweeted a note on Thursday along with the words "a message from me to you." "I have spent the recent days reexamining my actions and searching my soul," he wrote. "Some of the things said about me have been shocking and my initial instinct was to be defensive. But I also have thought about how numerous women now have come forward as part of a vital movement to lead a discussion about sexual harassment and discrimination in the publishing industry. And I have talked with friends deeply immersed in the #MeToo and...

Why would an organization committed to the survival of humanity call themselves W.C.K.D.? It’s almost as if author James Dashner, in all his subtlety, said “Well, readers need to know the good guys from the bad guys, so I found a synonym for ‘evil’ and used it to name the antagonistic organization at the center of my plot.”
It’s this type of ham-fisted story construction that made The Maze Runner books such chores to read and, up until now, the films weren’t much different. The first outing, while superior to its sequel, felt like another watery Ya adventure with nothing worthwhile to say. The final film in the franchise, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, doesn’t necessarily change this as much as it just does the same thing with more inspiration and more deftness.

Chicago – The third part of the “Maze Runner” trilogy is called “The Death Cure,” and that cure best describes the faint pulse of this run-out-of-steam dystopia aimed at “young adults.” It is mostly warring and not much more, except for a stab (literally) at misplaced emotion.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
The trilogy started out with promise, as they are based on a novel series by James Dashner. The first film had a drawing-back-the-curtain effect, promising that perhaps the strange maze our heroes had to go through was some sort of mind experiment. But by the second film, that effect turned into a literal and bizarre adventure in a post-apocalyptic world, a kiddie “Mad Max.” The third installment continues the second film concept, and ups the ante. More big bang effects, more guns, more 20-year-olds-portraying-teenagers-as-virus-survivalists, and less of anything to really latch onto. This is the Maze Runner film for completists only.

Taking its cue from the popular James Dashner Ya novels, 20th Century Fox’s Maze Runner movie series finally closes out with The Death Cure, which was delayed by more than a year due to the on-set injury of star Dylan O’Brien. You’d be forgiven if you have forgotten about “The Maze Runner” franchise. You’re not alone. In the general scheme of Ya adaptations, ranging from genuinely good (“Harry Potter,” “The Hunger Games”) to the stupendously bad (“Twilight,” “Divergent“), James Dashner‘s post-apocalyptic action-thriller book series has inspired some fairly average film adaptations.

While the third chapter in the movie franchise based on James Dashner’s dystopian Young Adult novels was filming in the B.C. interior in March of 2016, its star Dylan O’Brien was severely injured when he accidentally got pulled off of a moving vehicle, then hit by another one. Welcome (back) to the Scorch!
Picking up where 2015’s “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” left off — and bringing the best and most kinetic of the post-apocalyptic Ya sagas to an exhausting finish — “The Death Cure” reintroduces us to a fallen world where a killer virus has decimated most of the population. Per Deadline, Walton Goggins has officially climbed aboard Wes Ball’s long-brewing Ya sequel, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, where he’ll play the volatile Lawrence.
