Some critics believe that “cult movies” no longer exist. After all, how do you define an underground cult following in an age when independent films are more easily accessible than ever and you can instantly discuss movies with anyone in the world? It’s now possible to stream nearly any picture at the touch of a button, so it makes sense that the days of underground screenings and traditional word-of-mouth are long behind us.
That being said, there’s an argument to be made about a modern-day equivalent to the cult classic. The fickle tides of online engagement mean that some truly great media often slips through the cracks of the distribution system, resulting in notable works of art becoming lost in online limbo because they didn’t please the all-knowing algorithm or were just released at the wrong place and the wrong time. Hell, some of these movies can...

Zoey Punches the Future in the Dick is the fun and fast-paced second book in the Zoey Ashe series by David Wong, writer of the John Dies at the End series. It picks up a year after the events in the first book, 2015’s Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits, and follows Zoey Ashe and her Ashe Security team as the protagonist continues to adjust to her immense wealth and power.
Action-packed and full of humor, Zoey Ashe is Diablo Cody meets the Fast franchise. Fans of snarky protagonists and action that borders on the absurd will delight in this romp through the gaudy, technologically advanced Vegas-like city of Tabula Ra$a, a veritable gangsters paradise. Though this is the second entry in the series, Futuristic Violence isn’t a necessary prerequisite to enjoy the story. But it will make you want to...

Don Coscarelli is a living legend in not only the horror world, but in independent cinema. From having a major studio release his first film at the age of 19, to his beloved Phantasm series, to John Dies at the End, Don Coscarelli has always done it his way. His upcoming book, True Indie: Life and Death in Filmmaking chronicles his journey on the often arduous independent road, and Daily Dead had the opportunity to talk with him about his book and his storied career.

Hulu gets science fiction. Science fiction is all about possibility. Will this event happen? Probably not. But could it? Maybe!
That sense of possibility and wonder imbues each and every film on this list of the best science fiction movies on Hulu. The list is relatively small as far as lists on our streaming guides go. But it's growing as the powers that be behind Hulu understand that having a healthy diet of content also means including some sci-fi roughage.

Alright, alright, settle down now. Settle down. I’ve got something to tell you. A lot of you know what I’m about to say. Some of you might sense what’s coming. Regardless, let’s all take a knee.
Deep breath in.
Deep breath out.
Okay.
…Shaun Of The Dead is almost 12 years old.
I know. It hurts. We’re super old and it’s a problem. Kids who were born the day Shaun came out are in secondary school. They’ve probably hit puberty. They’re feeling weird feelings about each other that they can’t explain. Their parents are probably starting to piss them off. Their parents who are probably us. We could be the parents of...

David Wong's strongly written novel John Dies At The End is this month's fiction selection for the Den Of Geek Book Club...
It's difficult for me to put my finger on why, exactly, I ultimately didn't like this book. The prose is decent, some of it is quite funny, and no one could ever accuse it of not being unique. Those are all things I usually love in entertainment. Several twists genuinely surprised me and I found all the central characters to be likeable to some degree.
I guess my problem is with David, in his capacity as an unreliable narrator.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against having an unreliable narrator wholesale; sometimes it works in interesting ways and makes for a better story. I think my problem is the specific brand of unreliable narration David is guilty of. He admits to Arnie at one point that he...

Doctor Who fan Neil Perryman introduced his Who-virgin wife to every episode, and Adventures With The Wife In Space is the result...
Television remote in hand, flicking through the channels, every so often an old episode of Doctor Who appears on my screen. Quite a lot of the time that episode seems to belong to either The Sea Devils or Inferno, and quite a lot of the time I end up watching it again, not because I'm a die-hard Whovian (which I'm not, although I fondly remember watching it when I was young) but because those episodes still work. There's a building sense of menace that overcomes the dodgy sets, and there's Jon Pertwee in his cloak, driving the action forward. He was a great Doctor for rushing around.
There's also the fact that these episodes are comfortable. I know them, and I like them. The whole concept of Doctor Who...

Directors like Christopher Nolan and J.J. Abrams have carved out a reputation for secrecy. Cagey about the plots of their films and only lightly dropping hints if they say anything at all, they send fans into a fervour. It can’t always work (everybody had twigged the Talia/Khan twists in The Dark Knight Rises/Star Trek Into Darkness respectively), but when it does it’s a delight.
In these spoiler heavy times, with the twist of the latest releases a click away, it’s very much appreciated. Other filmmakers don’t seem as bothered about shrouding their films in secrecy (or simply don’t have the clout to pull it off). Trailers burn the big set pieces to our retinas months in advance and entire online communities piece together the plot as if pre-release material is a puzzle in need of solving.
Some films take it even further.

2013 was a great year for horror throughout numerous avenues. Independent film offered some standouts with the disease consuming Contracted, forced intervention Resolution, the creature feature Grabbers, and many more. Hollywood gave us hordes of zombies with the surprising World War Z, a fresh home invasion take with You’re Next, and legitimate scares with The Conjuring.
But horror wasn’t restrained to just film, television made big leaps with Mads Mikkelsen’s great portrayal in Hannibal, the clever re-imaging of Norman in the Bates Motel, and the continuing mayhem offered in Game of Thrones. Still, horror couldn’t be stopped as music jumped into the mix with superb soundtracks released from Death Waltz, Waxwork, and One Way Static records. And it didn’t end there because horror was everywhere!!! Here are a few of my favorites from 2013:

I think that 2013 will be seen as a massive turning point in terms of how media is delivered into your home and how it is consumed. More than any other year, 2013 signified the decline of traditional cinema and release patterns. The multiplex seems more dominated than ever by the big blockbuster and sequels with no place for the films that fit in between. The mid-tier thriller or drama without prestige or huge explosions doesn’t seem to exist anymore as far as cinemas go and these films head straight to DVD or a streaming subscription service.
General audiences seem to not quite understand the business model for distribution and so anything that didn’t appear on cinema screens or was advertised in a newspaper or on TV and appears on DVD shelves or on streaming, is sadly being ignored.

So here we are in Christmas week, most of the usual streaming companies have done well for you so that you won’t be too bored post turkey when you have to tolerate the family. Apart from Now TV though, there is still a serious lack of Christmas themed films out there which is a disappointment unless you really like the Santa Clause movies because they are floating around Netflix somewhere.
Good news for 2014 though is that House of Cards season two debuts on Netflix in February and also the Breaking Bad/Bob Odenkirk spin-off “Better Call Saul” is going to make its way to Netflix at some point during the year as well. Netflix has agreed a deal where they will stream the show very soon after season one ends on AMC stateside but in Europe they will be the exclusive home of the show. This probably means that...

Anchor Bay Entertainment Canada and Raven Banner Entertainment have now released writer/director Don Coscarelli's horror comedy feature "John Dies At The End" on DVD and Blu-ray, based on author David Wong's novel of the same name:

Finally, a new Don Coscarelli movie! After years of waiting, the cult auteur comes back with a lively adaptation of David Wong’s popular novel. A drug that induces an out-of-body experience sends its users across time and other dimensions. When some of them come back not quite human, an otherworldly invasion is set into motion. Chicago – About ten minutes into “John Dies at the End,” a doorknob suddenly transforms into a large flaccid penis. It earns a laugh of sheer incredulity from an audience delighted by writer/director Don Coscarelli’s willingness to do literally anything for a laugh. Not since the Zaz team tackled “Airplane” and “The Naked Gun” has a film been packed wall-to-wall with so many absurdist gags.
In adapting David Wong’s beloved book for the big screen, Coscarelli attempted to fit as many “fan favorite” moments as he could onto the screen. During the film’s year-long festival run prior to its official release, Coscarelli incorporated audience feedback into the final cut. The result is a messy mishmash of ideas united by a cohesive tone of deadpan lunacy. It may be nuttier than a fruitcake, but the more one is familiar with quantum physics—and the belief that unbridled possibility...

There is nothing we love more than an impressive freestyle throw down, except perhaps an impressive freestyle throw down accompanied by a classical instrument. The unlikely combo of rap and violin is causing quite a stir online recently, with an infectiously catchy chance duet quickly gaining viral traction on Reddit.
The unlikely duet took place at F.A.M. Expo, an event in Westbury, New York, celebrating fashion, art and music. Electric violinist David Wong lays down a punchy melody for rapper Mateo Alan, the "first urban artist from his home town Gualaceo Ecuador," according to his website.
What happens when two normally separate musical genres are combined? YouTube gold, of course!

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. John Dies at the End David and John are college dropouts with no direction in their lives, but thanks to some very special soy sauce (that isn’t really soy sauce) they’re also the only ones standing between our world and the monstrous denizens of another dimension. You don’t need to know any more plot synopsis than that. (Especially since you already know how it ends…) The only bad thing about this release is the cover art. Director Don Coscarelli has always had a comedic side, but it’s only over his last few films that he’s really brought it to the forefront of his work. His latest finds the sweet spot that manages to be both very funny and incredibly creative on the horror side. Seriously...

After a seven-year break, movie writer-director Don Coscarelli (Bubba Ho-Tep) returns with John Dies at the End.
Based on the novel by David Wong, the horror-comedy movie is set in a time when a new drug, Soy Sauce, is out, promising an out-of-body experience with each hit. It’s supposed to make users drift across time and dimensions, but when they come back, they’re no longer human.
As a silent invasion happens, the world needs a hero, but the only people available are college dropouts John (Rob Mayes, TV’s The Client List) and David (Chase Williamson, TV’s Never Fade Away), who can barely hold down jobs.
The R-rated independent film also stars Paul Giamatti (Win Win), Clancy Brown (Cowboys & Aliens) and Glynn Turman (Super 8).

★★★☆☆ Don Coscarelli's 2012 adaptation of David Wong's cult novel John Dies at the End (the sequel to which, This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don't Touch It, was released last October) appeared at this year's Glasgow Film Festival having reportedly run into problems with its UK distribution; a sad turn of events, as Coscarelli's film could and should prove to be a reasonable success with the right audience. The film's Supernatural-esque premise involves two demon-hunting friends, David Wong (Chase Williamson) and John (Rob Mayes); David is recounting their adventures to a journalist, Arnie (Paul Giamatti).

I really wanted “John Dies At the End” to be a better movie than it is. There is so much potential, not only in the source material—the novel of the same name by David Wong—but also in the story itself. Unfortunately, the film never capitalizes on the enormous upside. Not a terrible movie—it’s fun enough for a while, and director Don Coscarelli (“Phantasm”) delivers the material with the dry, matter of fact tone that complements the absurdity of the premise, much like he did in “Bubba Ho-Tep”—“Jdate” never becomes anything more than a mildly amusing picture. This could, and maybe should, have been something we’d rave about and line up to see at midnight screenings for years to come. Wong’s book is far from perfect. It starts out strong, full of chaotic madness, but by the time you get to the final third,...

Don Coscarelli has two successful cult franchises to his name in Phantasm and Beastmaster. The announcement of Bubba Nosferatu, sequel to 2002's Bubba Ho-Tep, makes that three ... so why not go for a fourth? The writer/director purchased rights to John Dies at the End, itself a cult web serial by author David Wong, first released online in 2001. The resulting film, opening Friday at Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter, is arguably the best work Coscarelli's ever done.
Coscarelli's screenplay is smart, fast-paced and exciting, full of razor-sharp wit delivered first-person by star Chase Williamson. The story incorporates many important elements from the book while changing various details, sometimes for practical reasons. (Fans of the book will note the name and sex of the dog Molly have changed.)

While many maverick directors’ career trajectories seem to dip into progressively safer waters over the years, Don Coscarelli’s work never seems to lose the creative spark that first lit up the silver screens in 1979 with his refreshingly original and surreal Phantasm, a film that captured enough of the genre’s collective consciousness to spawn several sequels throughout the 80′s and 90′s.
In 2002, Coscarelli broadened his career with the well-received and automatic cult classic, Bruce Campbell vehicle, Bubba Ho-Tep, revealing that Coscarelli was more than a one-trick pony whose youthful energy had struck gold via the unique concepts pulsating through Phantasm. Outside of a decent Masters of Horror episode in 2005 and rumors of a Bubba Ho-Tep sequel that has yet to materialize (now entertainingly titled, Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires), however, Coscarelli largely disappeared before the unveiling of John Dies at the End.

Chicago – You’re at a party. It’s getting late. Chemicals have been ingested, booze has been imbibed, and conversation has been exhausted. You spot an interesting looking fella in the corner and he says he has a story to tell you. Maybe it’s the rush of something different, but the first half hour of that story is fascinating, filled with potential and creative in so many ways. And then you realize not only is he making it up as he goes along but that it’s getting far less interesting as he does so. An hour later you just want a ride home and the comfort of your bed. Such is the experience of Don Coscarelli’s “John Dies at the End,” a disappointing horror-comedy with some great ideas but no idea how to shape them into a movie.

Some movies are just born weird, plain and simple, and thank the movie gods for that. Sometimes weirdness and absurdity hit the screen like a lead weight, like a few of us saw in last year's Branded, and other times the cinematic weirdness clicks into place and serves a purpose besides that of simple, well, weirdness. This is to say that Don Coscarelli's adaptation of David Wong's celebrated cult novel John Dies at the End is all sorts of odd, but it also (somehow) all comes together into a satisfying whole. What begins as a seemingly indecipherable collection of bizarre anecdotes about a new drug that allows its users to do magical things slowly and confidently congeals into a satirical sci-fi horror film that, despite all its weird trappings, has the soul of a 1950s b-movie.
Needless to say, this movie is not for all tastes. At first...

A shaggy-dog story with restless leg syndrome, "John Dies at the End" may not amount to much, but there's no denying its sheer entertainment value. Mixing slacker laughs with inter-dimensional creepy-crawlies, it's a zing-packed horror comedy that coasts by on sheer bravado, twisted wit and endless adrenaline. Cult writer-director Don Coscarelli ("Bubba Ho-Tep," "The Beastmaster," "Phantasm") drolly adapts the novel by David Wong (a pen name for Jason Pargin), and even if the story's rules and logic seem to be ever-shifting, it never feels like the movie is cheating or pulling...
