It’s easy to think of the kind of stories that get told in the comic book world as just one genre or tone, but as seen below, graphic novels, comic strips, and other sequential art have offered up an incredible range of storytelling. And these stories have been inspiring great TV shows for years, even before superhero stories dominated the box office.
There were plenty of options that nearly made the list, like the WB’s “Smallville,” which squandered its early potential after running just a few seasons too long. Because one of the most exciting things about these stories is that there’s a rich variety to choose from.
With editorial contributions from Liz Shannon Miller, Ben Travers, and Hanh Nguyen.

Evaluating animated TV can be tricky. Not only is animation a medium that crosses a wide range of genres, but so many of our earliest memories in front of a screen are tied to an animated series, short, or special, and that impermeable nostalgia can be difficult to penetrate with typical critical tools like reason, logic, and other objective criteria. Some shows just click. They hit at the right time and capture a blossoming imagination. When it comes to ranking animated series, you’re not just analyzing TV shows. You’re critiquing childhoods.
Of course, animation is also one of the more expansive TV subsets, with dozens of different tones and styles that make comparisons often feel like apples and oranges. There are cartoons, anime, short films, short series, short films turned into short series, web series, adult-oriented animation, and that’s before digging into all the individual genres, like...

The world has changed a lot since “Black Mirror” premiered in 2011; mostly as the lines between fact and fiction blur. The sci-fi show from Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones became shorthand for our bleakest and most dystopic realities, whether that was a caricature rising to the highest office in the nation, technology used to monitor and manipulate human behavior, or alternate realities and artificial intelligence.
With Season 6 now on Netflix — its prescience and potency somewhat in question — IndieWire had to revisit the existing episodes and our previous ranking. Series finales are fickle things. Some of them have the power to redeem an entire show, to reframe the audience’s perceptions of what came before. Those massive twists rarely land, so more often than not, TV shows end not with a bang, but with a melancholy whimper.
And then there are the other times when a big series finale swing goes so awry that it can undo many seasons’ worth of goodwill. Recency bias rears its ugly head and some lifelong fans use these last episodes as a reason to sour on a particular show.
That’s why that the best finales don’t always come from the best shows. “Battlestar Galactica,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Dexter,” and more often reached brilliance over the course of their runs, but rang less true with their final notes. Some of IndieWire’s choices below come from shows that wouldn’t...

As long as humans have been passing down stories, those tales have included our capacity to transgress against each other. It’s a tradition literally as old as the Bible.
And beyond documenting how people break the rules that govern our evolving notions of society, we’re constantly fascinated by those charged with righting those wrongs. Whether it follows the detectives who investigate those crimes, those within the judicial system who determine the proper level of punishment, or the friends and family members left in the wake of these actions, this process has become the cornerstone of many of cultural touchstones.
On the TV side, for the better part of two decades when the antihero has reigned supreme, that trend is as prevalent as ever. For every harrowing situation that asks an audience “How would you react in this situation?” there are often dire consequences. There’s no simpler way...

Comedy rules are made to be broken. If all laughter comes from some great psychological misdirect, then it follows that the funniest series are the ones that continue to take the unexpected routes.
But sometimes a comedy is memorable because of the rules that it inadvertently puts in place. Some foundational TV series have endured not because they were ratings or cultural juggernauts in their time, but because their spiritual descendants dotted programming lineups years — maybe even decades — after their cameras stopped rolling. As in other realms of entertainment, the TV comedies that endure and that are worth revisiting manage to speak to something brewing in their day and the audiences watching generations after. Sometimes it’s a matter of seeing how much the idea of good governance has changed since some starry-eyed optimists in Indiana closed up shop just a few years ago. Other times, it’s recognizing how...

Are there any sweeter words in the age of too much TV than “limited series?” It’s a category that guarantees minimal time commitment with maximum return — be it weekly watercooler gossip or a delicious binge. The limited series is the perfect hybrid between a movie and a longer-running TV series, with intricate stories, complex characters, and just the right amount of moving parts. The fact that a series will not return makes the narrative precious and the ending paramount, even if that means leaving things deliberately open-ended. This one-off nature makes them perfect for literary adaptations, epic events, and period pieces.
What doesn’t qualify? Those that started as limited series but then blew up enough to get a second season. We’ve also limited (ha!) ourselves to scripted for now, since Ken Burns will probably deserve his own ranking down the line, once he slows down and we...

The perils and plights of adolescence have long been a source of fascination for television audiences. That’s particularly apparent nowadays with Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Showtime, FX, and others vying for zeitgeist dominance with teen-focused dramas playing to a variety of creative strengths. As narratives have gotten more sophisticated overall across the TV landscape, it makes sense that the ways in which we look at stories about young people have also evolved. From “Never Have I Ever” and “Love, Victor” to “Yellowjackets” and “Stranger Things,” TV teens in 2022 are among some of the most rich ever written.

Nothing in life is sure, except that “Downton Abbey: A New Era” will certainly be bringing more drama from our favorite British family.
The “Downton Abbey” sequel follows Julian Fellowes’ 2019 film and six seasons on BBC. While plot details have remained under wraps, we do spot the Crawleys visiting a new villa in the South of France, which Lady Violet (Maggie Smith) is said to have inherited. Fans are also expecting to learn more about Violet’s past in the latest installment.
Returning stars include Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Jim Carter.
Meanwhile, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, and Dominic West make their “Downton” debuts as new characters.
Creator Fellowes previously described the sequel as following Lady Mary (Dockery) as she takes over the duties for Lady Violet following her illness. “We’re trying to mark the change — the fact that Crawleys of Downton are nearly in the 1930s,...

‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ First Trailer: The Crawleys Return in Latest Film Extension of the Series
Since the British drama “Downton Abbey” ended its six-season run, series creator Julian Fellowes penned a follow-up film released in 2019. Now, the Crawleys are returning to the big screen for a second time with “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” featuring the return of nearly all the series regulars in a film that follows the trials and tribulations of the aristocratic family and their servants later into the 1920s. Below, find the first teaser trailer from Focus Features, which is releasing the film in the U.S. in March.
Plot details remain under wraps, but the “Downton Abbey” sequel is set to take place after the events of the first film, which traced the preparation by the Crawley household for a visit by King George V and Queen Mary, an event that proved to be full of drama and intrigue at the estate.

Fans of “Cobra Kai,” Netflix’s television series based on the classic “Karate Kid” film, won’t have to wait much longer for the show’s third season. Netflix announced on Friday that “Cobra Kai” Season 3 will premiere January 8, 2021 on the streaming service and also revealed that the show had been renewed for a fourth season.
Per Netflix, “Cobra Kai” takes place over 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament with the continuation of the inescapable conflict between Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Season 3 finds everyone reeling in the aftermath of the violent high school brawl between their dojos, which has left Miguel in a precarious condition. While Daniel searches for answers in his past and Johnny seeks redemption, Kreese further manipulates his vulnerable students with his own vision of dominance. Jim Parsons won four Emmys for “The Big Bang Theory,” and now he gives a showy, against-type performance as an exploitative talent agent in “Hollywood,” so it’s no surprise that he’s the Emmy front-runner for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. But not everyone agrees on that point. Our Top 24 Users, who got the highest scores predicting last year’s nominations, are betting on one of the “Watchmen”: Tim Blake Nelson.
Out of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed, 13 of them are betting on Parsons to win: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Shawn Edwards (Wdaf-tv Fox), Lynn Elber (Associated Press), Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood), Libby Hill (IndieWire), Wilson Morales (BlackFilm), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Hanh Nguyen (Salon), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Jazz Tangcay (TV Guide Magazine), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

Earlier this year “The Good Place” signed off the air to great fanfare, but how many Emmy voters watching? All season long, Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) has been the odds-on front-runner to win Best Comedy Supporting Actor at the 2020 Emmys, and that still hasn’t changed now that nominations voting is over. In fact, a leading 19 of our 31 Emmy Experts predict a second consecutive victory for the “Mrs. Maisel” scene-stealer, compared to 10 who think “Schitt’s Creek” creator/writer/actor Dan Levy will prevail. The other two prognosticators throw their support at Sterling K. Brown (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”).

“Watchmen” finished airing last December, but it wasn’t until recently that actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II skyrocketed into the top six in our Emmy predictions for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor. Do you agree that he’s bound for a nomination? And could he even win?
Spoiler alert! While Abdul-Mateen is initially believed to be Cal, the unassuming husband of crusading police detective Angela Abar (Regina King), he is eventually revealed to be the omniscient and omnipotent being Doctor Manhattan, who has been in disguise for years — even disguised from himself. So the actor gets to play dual roles, which gives voters a chance to see his dramatic range, though he might be slightly disadvantaged by the fact that one of his personas is often shrouded in glowing blue visual effects.

Talk about a nail-biter! Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets are almost evenly divided between “Bad Education” and “El Camino” when it comes to Best TV Movie. All 29 Emmyologists believe both programs will earn nominations on July 28, so that’s no help. But when it comes to the winner, 13 pick the HBO telefilm about a true-to-life high school scandal while 12 choose the Netflix spin-off about a fan-favorite “Breaking Bad” character. The other four Experts predict “American Son,” Netflix’s adaptation of the Broadway play.

“Bad Education” just debuted on April 25, so it’s still fresh in the minds of Emmy voters. Hugh Jackman plays a by-the-books Long Island superintendent who gets embroiled in an embezzlement scandal thanks to his assistant’s (Allison Janney) illegal spending habits. HBO is no stranger to winning Best TV Movie, including...

“Watchmen,” HBO’s uniquely timely program about mask-wearing and racial injustice, is our Experts’ pick to take home the trophy for Best Limited Series at the 2020 Emmys. The one-and-done series starring Regina King as a vigilante superhero is a loose adaptation of the 1980s comic book of the same name, which only lasted a single volume. But, not so fast. Even though a vast majority of our Emmyologists from major media outlets predict “Watchmen” to win (18 out of 29), there’s a slight problem in that two Experts don’t think it’ll be nominated at all. In fact, only one limited series has the support of every single Expert in terms of getting a nomination: FX’s “Mrs. America.” That helps boosts the political drama’s racetrack odds to 39/10, which is just a smidge below the leading 19/5 odds for HBO’s comic book series.

It’s the beginning of the end for “Dark,” Netflix’s popular German-language sci-fi thriller series. The streaming service has unveiled the trailer for the show’s upcoming third and final season, which will premiere on Netflix on June 27.
The “Dark” Season 3 release date is plenty appropriate, given that “an apocalypse” was intended to occur in the series on June 27, 2020. The show’s sophomore season ending with the beginning of the apocalypse and a shocking twist that other planets may exist. The third season’s new trailer promises to answer all questions when the time is right, but until then, Netflix is keeping things cryptic. Here’s the streamer’s description of Season 3: The time-twisting madness reaches its conclusion in a strange new world, where some things are quite familiar — and others are disturbingly not.

So now the Obi-Wan series is really, really real, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif. — and that, pretty much, was all she had to say about that.
“After secrets and fibs and not being able to talk about it, I am thrilled to welcome out a beloved member of the Star Wars family,” she said of the long-rumored series.
Star Ewan McGregor walked out on stage to deafening cheers from the crowd. “It’s so nice,” he said. “It’s been four years of [dodging questions].”
Beyond that, details were scarce. Said Kennedy, “All scripts written. We start shooting next year.”
McGregor will reprise his role as as sage Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, which began with “The Phantom Menace” back in 1999. The role of world-weary, wise Obi-Wan was originally played by Sir Alec Guinness in 1977’s “A New Hope,” in which Obi-Wan sacrificed himself to his former student,...

The Infinity Saga may be over, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe will barrel forward with the November launch of Disney+. At D23 Expo in Anaheim on Friday, Marvel head Kevin Feige confirmed that the upcoming slate of series scheduled to premiere on the Disney streaming platform will be integrated into the films just as the current McU movies are and always have been.
“These episodes will intersect with the movies in a very big way,” Feige said. “It’s a totally new form of storytelling that we get to play with and explore.”
Although Marvel fans already knew a handful of titles to expect, ranging from “WandaVision” and the Untitled Loki Series, Feige also announced three new titles. Details, below.
Untitled Loki Series
McU regular Tom Hiddleston will return as Loki for the Disney+ series. Daniel Brühl will return as Zemo, joined by Emily VanCamp, who played Sharon Carter in the “Captain America” films.

This week’s highlights are facing a litter box full of stiff competition from that life-altering “Cats” trailer, but are more than worthy of your time if you’re able to pull yourself away from digital fur-enhanced Judi Dench for a few minutes (easier said than done). Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” a sensation at Sundance earlier this year and now a bonafide box office smash, is expanding to cities across the country, and is an unmissable film.
