With Samsara, Lois Patiño applies his dramatized ethnographic approach to the Bardo Thodol, commonly known in the West as The Tibetan Book of the Dead. The film presents a diptych of two stories, one set in Luang Prabang, Laos, and its surrounding countryside, the other in a hamlet in Zanzibar. Patiño stresses the gulf of distance, culture, and more between the two locales by going so far as to employ separate cinematographers—Mauro Herce for the Laos segment and Jessica Sarah Rinland for Zanzibar segment. Despite the marked differences between the two halves, though, Patiño worked with local, nonprofessional actors to craft a unifying metaphysical narrative that traces the ephemeral journey of one soul through death and rebirth by finding the parallels in spiritual beliefs that link two peoples.

“Weird: The Weird Al Yankovic Story” will make its world premiere at TIFF, leading the Midnight Madness program’s 10-film lineup.
Starring Daniel Radcliffe as “Weird Al” Yankovic, the film chronicles the career of the music and comedy icon. Directed by Eric Appel, who co-wrote with Yankovic himself, the cast of the Roku biopic also includes Evan Rachel Wood, Quinta Brunson and Rainn Wilson.

The first few I printed and handbound myself during a period when I was also manually editing my films on a Steenbeck. Most recently, the books have been sent elsewhere to be printed and bound in larger editions, similar to my films which I now process elsewhere, and edit and show digitally.The films are still shot on 16mm film, a material that includes ground up animal bones. The series Hands-On: Two Films by Jessica Sarah Rinland starts on Mubi on April 5, 2021 in many countries.In 1900, the tusk of a female elephant poached in Malawi was donated to the Natural History Museum in London. Over 100 years later filmmaker and artist Jessica Sarah Rinland begins to make a copy. With this tusk Rinland opens up a synecdoche of both preservation and the nature of reproduction. Working with Harvard’s Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies and having played at Locarno, TIFF, Viennale, True/False (amongst others), Those That, At A Distance, Resemble Another is one third of a larger project, which includes the actual elephant tusk and a book. Artist and film-maker Jessica Sarah Rinland has authored a brief essay movie on the universal themes of the copy and the original. A copyist reproduces an original work of art, a museum conservator fabricates a damaged object with replacement materials. But the originals are arguably copies of ideas and genres within the artist’s mind, and the biological act of reproduction is an act of copying, from the DNA template.
Rinland’s camera observes calmly, almost blankly, as the introduction of howler monkeys into the wild is discussed by zoologists – a habitat where they might breed – and this issue is juxtaposed with restoration work at the V&a, the Natural History Museum and the British Museum in London. An elephant tusk is copied as a plaster cast; confiscated tusks are used to restore a 19th-century ivory box,...

Following its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, Cinema Guild has acquired all North American distribution rights to Joshua Bonnetta’s The Two Sights. Set to make its U.S. premiere next month as part of Film at Lincoln Center’s Art of the Real, the film will then open in theaters in 2021.
The first solo feature from Bonnetta, The Two Sights (An Dà Shealladh) explores the disappearing tradition of second sight in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. As we listen to locals’ accounts of haunting experiences—phantom horses, ghost voices and other supernatural phenomena—Bonnetta connects their testimonies with striking 16mm images and a carefully-curated sonic montage of the physical and aural environment of these enchanted islands. The sixth edition of the training program is now in the second segment of its residency at San Sebastian, and a different world awaits its five participants since their first meeting in March.
Rinland, an Argentine-British installation artist and filmmaker, said that it was “a small miracle” any of this year’s cohort had made it back for the San Sebastian Film Festival, where they will present their projects to the industry.
Rinland is one of five filmmakers, selected from 185 submissions, who were granted a fellowship for this year’s program, to develop her second feature, which explores the rise and fall of zoos in society.

The UK Jewish Film Festival winners have been revealed. The Best Debut Feature Award has gone to Leona, directed by Isaac Cherem. The Spanish-language Mexican film, which received its UK premiere at the event, follows a young Jewish woman from Mexico City who finds herself torn between her family and her forbidden love with a non-Jewish man. The Dorfman Best Film Award went to Polish film Dolce Fine Giornata, directed by Jacek Borcuch. Pic charts how the stable family life of a poetess begins to fall apart as she makes a controversial speech. The movie beat out other titles Flawless, Jojo Rabbit, My Polish Honeymoon, Stripped and The Unorthodox. The Best Documentary Award winner has been announced as Advocate, directed by Philippe Bellaiche and Rachel Leah Jones. The film is a look at the life and work of Jewish-Israeli lawyer Lea Tsemel who has represented political prisoners for nearly 50 years.

The Golden Leopard goes to Portugal for Pedro Costa’s Vitalina Varela.
Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa received Locarno Film Festival’s top honour, the Golden Leopard, for his latest feature Vitalina Varela which had its world premiere in the Swiss festival’s international competition.

The international jury headed by French filmmaker and novelist Catherine Breillat also presented the Leopard for best actress to the 55-year-old Cape Verde islander Vitalina Varela for her performance in the film named after herself.

Celebrating its 72nd edition this year, the Locarno Film Festival has been the birthplace for the finest in international arthouse cinema and this year’s lineup looks to continue the tradition. Ahead of the festival, running August 7-17, the full slate has been announced.
Top highlights include the world premieres of Pedro Costa’s Vitalina Varela (pictured above), Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s To the Ends of the Earth, Ben Rivers & Anocha Suwichakornpong’s Krabi, 2562, Ben Russell’s Color-blind, Denis Côté’s Wilcox, Fabrice Du Welz’s Adoration, as well as a new 12-minute short film from Yorgos Lanthimos titled Nimic and starring Matt Dillon. Other titles that have caught out eye are Echo, from Sparrows director Rúnar Rúnarsson, and A Girl Missing, from Harmonium director Koji Fukada.

Both those bemoaning the lack of new British film-makers and more optimistic glass-half-full talent-spotters will be spoilt for choice here, possibly overwhelmingly so. There are 38 programmes of new British shorts alone, not to mention international work and documentaries. It’s all helpfully organised by genre (sample titles: Lo-Budget Mayhem, Femmes Fantastiques, God’s Lonely Men, Wtf?), which could bring anything from gang-related conker fights to an operatic love story between a jar of jam and a slice of toast. There are also events dedicated to film-makers just off the radar (Jarman collaborator Richard Heslop, Norway’s Joern Utkilen and British artist Jessica Sarah Rinland), and a few very much on it (a Harmony Korine weekend, a retrospective of Nathanial Hörnblowér, Aka Beastie Boy Adam Yauch). There’s even a night dedicated to films about cats.

The 52nd annual Ann Arbor Film Festival will be a jam-packed experimental feature and short film screening event running for six days and nights, this time on March 25-30.
Opening Night will feature a reception and an after-party, and stuffed between those will be a block of nine short films, including new ones by Bryan Boyce, Michael Robinson, Jennifer Reeder and Martha Colburn, as well as a never-before-released work by the legendary Bruce Baillie called Little Girl in which Baillie captured scenes of natural beauty.
Special Events scattered throughout the festival include a retrospective of indie filmmaker Penelope Spheeris that will feature her rock ‘n’ roll-based work, including the original The Decline of Western Civilization, plus The Decline of Western Civilization Part III, her influential punk film Suburbia (screening twice) and a collection of short films.

Ann Arbor Film Festival is back again with its tour programs! Divided into two high-quality digital and 16mm programs, the travelling tour of the 49th Ann Arbor Film Festival (Aaff) offers 17 short films 7 different countries, featuring award-winning and favourite new works from the 2011 edition across all genres: experimental, documentary, fiction, animation and hybrids. Some of the highlights of the programs include Home Movie (Best Narrative Film Award) by Braden King, director of the award-winning feature Here (Berlinale 2011, Sundance 2011), and The Florestine Collection (Jury Award) by the late animator Helen Hill, who was murdered in a home invasion in New Orleans in 2007, and her husband Paul Gailiunas, who survived the incident and eventually completed the film three years later.

The 49th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival is an epic celebration of experimental media that runs for six days on March 22-27. There’s so much great stuff screening this year, it makes one wonder what they’ll have left for their 50th anniversary next year!
A couple of the highlights include the highly anticipated feature-length documentary The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye by Marie Losier, which chronicles the pandrogynous love story between industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and his late wife. The film already made a big splash at the Berlinale earlier in the year and looks to be a major hit on the festival circuit this year.
Also not to be missed is a special retrospective of one of this year’s festival jury members, Vanessa Renwick, a longtime favorite on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film. Renwick will screen 10 of her quirky and artistic documentary portraits,...
