"Star Wars" fans have a bit of a good news/bad news situation to contend with today. The good news? It was confirmed that 2022's "Obi-Wan Kenobi" series is finally getting a 4K and Blu-ray release nearly two years after it finished its run on Disney+. Unfortunately, that very same physical media release has also quietly confirmed that the show is not getting a second season and is instead going to remain a limited series. That's not good news for those who wished to see Ewan McGregor suit up one more time as the beloved Jedi.
The upcoming Blu-ray release was announced alongside similar releases for Marvel's "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" and "Moon Knight," as well as the "Star Wars" series "Andor." All three of those shows were billed as "the complete first season" by Disney. "Obi-Wan Kenobi," on the other hand, will be released as "the complete series.

The Force appears to be no longer with Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Though series lead Ewan McGregor has in interviews done his best to keep the Jedi master’s lightsaber a-glow, the fact that the upcoming 4K Uhd and Blu-ray sets are labeled “Obi-Wan Kenobi: The Complete Series” appears to have struck down any hope for future adventures.

If Nicole Kidman, a massive movie star who pivoted to TV and became known as the “Queen of Peak TV,” perhaps someone like Ewan McGregor is quickly becoming her counterpart. McGregor, like Kidman, enjoyed much success on screen as a leading man, but as the mid-sized drama seemingly vanished in cinemas and shifted towards television, actors like the two of them, with an inclination for human stories, have pivoted right alongside the trend.

Trying to have a nuanced conversation about George Lucas' "Star Wars" prequels is a little like attempting to thread the Stone Needle in Beggar's Canyon on Tatooine. Thanks to the toxic fan discourse that sprung up around them, it's difficult to discuss these movies without wondering how much of your reaction is being colored by their rather complicated legacy -- both the good and the bad.
Take Hayden Christensen. At first, critics weren't exactly wowed by his turn as the man who would become Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker, in his moody young adult years. Then again, they weren't exactly wowed by any of the acting in Lucas' prequels. Roger Ebert, reviewing "Attack of the Clones" in 2002, wrote that the film's leads — Anakin, Padmé (Natalie Portman), and Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) — "seem so strangely stiff and formal in their speech that an unwary viewer might be excused for thinking they were the clones,...

Mark Gustafson was all set to get working on the new adaptation of “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” with the titular director but then the pandemic hit in early 2020. “We all just left work but what we did was many of the artists were able to work at home, like in their basements because they had all the kit, a lot of them, so they were able to continue making props and armatures,” he tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
He gives a lot of credit to Netflix in keeping the production alive during a very trying period. “Netflix was an incredible partner in this thing and they said we’re going to keep funding you and we’re going to keep everybody on board. So we had this beautiful continuity across the pandemic and we were able to then just ramp up again.

Aside from the serious somber Oscar contenders, and a few action blockbusters, the end-of-the-year holidays see the release of many family-friendly animated fantasies. And this pre-Thanksgiving weekend delivers a new version of a familiar children’s classic. Of course, some of that familiarity may come from its having a “new take” just a few months ago. Now, this spin is a bit more “low-tech”, as the former was a mix of live-action and “motion capture” magic, this one is done with stop-motion animation (fittingly often called “puppet animation”). Plus it adheres much more closely to the somewhat “dark” nature of the book. Which is a good match with its co-director/producer. who has helmed many a sinister fantasy fable. And just to drive that point home, his name is in the title, Guillermo Del Toro’S Pinocchio, to make sure we know this “ain’t” your Uncle Walt’s lil...

It's pretty serendipitous that "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" (which del Toro co-directed with experienced stop-motion artist Mark Gustafson) is arriving so shortly after Disney's lifeless live-action remake. It's easy to forget just how ubiquitous the Disney formula — taking classic children's stories and smoothing out the ugly parts, sad endings, and dark corners — has become until you're confronted with an adaptation that refuses to talk down to children or draw a sunny curtain over the terrors of the world.
Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" ends with its young heroine being rejected by her prince and casting herself into the ocean, where her mortal body dissolves into sea foam and she reemerges as a benevolent spirit. Andersen's "The Snow Queen" opens with the devil himself creating a corrupted mirror that shatters; the splinters are blown all around the world and get stuck in people's eyes so that everything they see is twisted into ugliness.

As they say here north of the border: Time to drop the puck on the 2022 Toronto Film Festival.
The weather is beautiful, and they’ve cordoned off King Street from the Lightbox to Roy Thomson Hall. People are getting their bearings, most not wearing masks in the open air. This is a sight better than last year, when the cable cars were not rerouted from King Street because so few came for the festivities. Not surprisingly, not a single major deal happened on the ground as the festivals and specialty theatrical business were still feeling the fallout from Covid.
Toronto Film Festival: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
Will this year be any better? Some believe it certainly can’t get worse. Buyers and sellers expect the pace to be on the slow side, with some possible exceptions. I hear that the hot title is one that isn’t officially on the for-sale lists,...

Christian Bale is known for disappearing into his roles and "Velvet Goldmine" was no exception. Written and directed by Todd Haynes, the 1998 movie was named for David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" era B-side. Haynes is no stranger to music movies, having begun his career with the 1987 controversial short film, "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story." He also helmed the incredible "I'm Not There" in 2007, which explored the various phases of Bob Dylan's career through a host of different actors. Haynes also made the excellent recent documentary about my all-time favorite band, "The Velvet Underground."
"Velvet Goldmine" chronicles the life of pop star Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a Bowie-esque figure, as well as his love affair with the Iggy Pop-inspired Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor). Their performances are swoon-worthy — Meyers and McGregor both did their own singing in the movie. Plus, the film's fictional bands included members of Radiohead, Suede,...

Actor Ewan McGregor thought he was too “urban grunge” to star in ‘Star Wars’. Playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy of the sci-fi franchise, the 51-year-old star revealed that he nearly turned down the part as he wanted more indie roles following his success in ‘Trainspotting’, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“I was like, ‘I am Danny Boyle’s actor’,” the actor quipped. “I am f****** urban grunge. I am the Oasis of the British movie industry, and then when ‘Star Wars’ came around, I felt, ‘I don’t know if I want to do this. This isn’t me’.”
“I was so into being this sort of antihero. I felt like an indie British actor. I felt like that defined me.”
McGregor said that it was a childhood love of the franchise that ultimately persuaded him to take the part.
The ‘Moulin Rouge’ star recalled: “In the end, it just got closer and closer.

Ewan McGregor almost passed on the “Star Wars” prequels due to his “grunge” persona in British indie cinema.
During the 1990s, after McGregor’s success with Danny Boyle’s “Trainspotting” in 1996, McGregor second-guessed signing on to “Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace.” McGregor portrayed the younger version of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the 1999 trilogy, a role which he later reprised for the Disney+ series that premiered earlier this year.
“I really had to think about it,” McGregor said during the “Smartless” podcast, hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. “Because it came right after that ‘Trainspotting’ period, and by that time I was so full of myself.”
McGregor joked, “I was like, ‘I am Danny Boyle’s actor. I am fucking urban grunge. I am the Oasis of the British movie industry,’ and then when ‘Star Wars’ came around, I felt, ‘I don’t know if I want to do this.

John Boyega has never shied away from speaking out about the racist bullying he received for his work as Finn in the “Star Wars” franchise. Things got so bad, he convened a meeting with Disney and Lucasfilm execs to express his disappointment in their lack of support during the targeted attacks.
While Boyega has now said he has no plans to return to “Star Wars,” he’s proud of “Obi-Wan” star Ewan McGregor coming to his co-star Moses Ingram’s defense after she became the target of online hate when their series premiered on Disney+ in May.
“I don’t know how Disney have done, and I don’t know how they’ve moved with everything,” Boyega tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “All I know is about specifically Lucasfilm, about the Obi-Wan Kenobi stuff. John Boyega may not be returning to “Star Wars” as Finn any time soon, but that doesn’t mean he’s not plugged into the new Disney+ shows that are happening. In fact, he was a pretty huge fan of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” — particularly Hayden Christensen’s part in it.
While at the premiere for Jordan Peele’s latest horror film “Nope,” Boyega told TheWrap that he’s been very on top of all the new series, even amidst his own busy schedule. “Of course I’ve watched them! Oh yeah, I watched them first day they came out,” he said.
Boyega added that he particularly enjoyed Disney’s latest series, “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” because it brought back Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Boyega made it clear that Anakin may not be everyone’s favorite, but he’s definitely got a lot of love in his own heart for the character.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” ran for six episodes on Disney+, but for many fans and critics that was simply too long. While everyone was happy to see Ewan McGregor back as the iconic Jedi, not every “Star Wars” fans agreed on the pacing of the story or the main plotline that sent Obi-Wan on an adventure to save a young Princess Leia from Darth Vader. One “Star Wars” fan, Kai Patterson, has gone viral on social media for editing the Disney+ series into a single two-hour-and-30-minute movie.
“The ‘Obi-Wan’ show, in my opinion, suffered from things that were easily fixable in the script and in the edit,” Patterson writes about his decision to create the fan edit, which is streaming now on his personal website. “Awkward pacing, whole scenes that ultimately amounted to nothing, goofy dialogue and directing choices, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and change what I could.

“Star Wars” fans were excited for the return of everyone’s favorite Jedi when “Obi-Wan Kenobi” starring Emmy winner Ewan McGregor premiered via Disney Plus on May 27. The series proved to be well worth the wait, becoming the streamer’s most-watched premiere, surpassing season two of “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett.” In its inaugural season, which concluded on June 22, the limited series proves that there is no stopping the iconic franchise from exploring new territory as well as revisiting fan favorites. But did critics agree?

Reva the Inquisitor was supposed to have an ending with real finality.
The original script for the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” film, before it became a Disney+ series, included Reva’s death. Writer Stuart Beattie told The Direct that Reva, played by Moses Ingram, was going to fall by Darth Vader’s lightsaber at the hands of actor Hayden Christensen, in order to save Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor).
“I wanted her story to end. I wanted Reva to play her part in the Kenobi-Vader story, which was, essentially, at the end, she was the one that allowed Vader, basically told Vader to stop hunting Kenobi,” Beattie said. “You know, she ended the obsession Vader had with Kenobi. She claimed it was over, it’s done. So that was, that was her role to play. And she’d done so many terrible things, I felt she had to die. You can only redeem so much.

Ewan McGregor’s return to “Star Wars” was supposed to be a film trilogy and not a Disney+ series, but the box office bomb of the prequel film “Solo: A Star Wars Story” caused a strategic shift.
Stuart Beattie’s “Obi-Wan Kenobi” script was repurposed for the Disney+ series of the same name, as the screenwriter told The Direct. And while Beattie has a “story by” and writing credits for multiple episodes, he explained that he had no involvement in the series itself.
“I wrote the film that they based the show on,” Beattie said. “I spent like a year, year-and-a-half working on it. And then, when the decision was made not to make any more spinoff films after ‘Solo’ came out, I left the project and went on to other things. Had “Solo: A Star Wars Story” not disappointed at the box office in 2018, then “Obi-Wan Kenobi” might’ve been a full-fledged movie trilogy instead of a six-episode Disney+ limited series. Screenwriter Stuart Beattie has “story by” and/or writing credits on multiple “Obi-Wan” episodes, but he recently told The Direct that he had no involvement with the Disney+ series. The overall response to Obi-Wan Kenobi may have been positive, but there is one complaint that many fans seem to share: they want to see more. For some, that desire comes from a love of the characters, especially after showrunner Deborah Chow crafted a suitable bridge between the Star Wars prequels and the original trilogy, forcing Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan to face for the first time his former apprentice Anakin Skywalker in the form of Darth Vader, played by Hayden Christensen. For others, that desire comes from a sense that the series rushed through events, not giving viewers enough time to understand Kenobi’s dire situation.
Whatever they wanted from a continuation of Obi-Wan’s story, fans almost got more – a whole lot more. Speaking exclusively with The Direct, screenwriter Stuart Beattie revealed that Lucasfilm originally planned an entire trilogy of movies starring McGregor as Obi-Wan. “Yeah, Ewan was on board,...

Isn’t it kind of fascinating how we live in a world where it seems as though everybody now loves the Star Wars prequel trilogy all of a sudden? When those films were initially released, they were met with some of the most insane waves of criticism any franchise has ever seen. Do you know how much the Star Wars sequels are hated? That’s essentially how much the prequels were hated on back in the day.
But, fast-forward to 2022, it seems as though everybody has embraced them and cherishes them. But, let me tell you – this Star Wars fan has been a fan of those three movies since the very first time my eyes saw them.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” has wrapped its run on Disney+, delivering plenty of well-received nostalgia and some redemption for George Lucas’ prequel trilogy. But following the limited series’ conclusion, which saw a fan-favorite cameo from Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn many fans had a question: Where was Yoda?
The two Jedis had a close relationship in both the original and prequel trilogies, so the iconic character’s absence was curious to some. Qui-Gon Jinn has returned.
Star Wars fans were floored on Wednesday when Liam Neeson made his return to a galaxy far, far away in the series finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+.
In the closing moments of the Star Wars miniseries, Neeson returned to the franchise for the first time since Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace (1999) as Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn (in live-action form; he also voiced the character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars). It had been teased since the premiere episode that Qui-Gon might make an appearance, but there was never any guarantee. And given how much time has passed since Neeson last played the character, it was hard to determine his interest in donning his Jedi robes one more time.
The Academy Award-nominated actor told The Hollywood Reporter that he decided to return to the franchise for a number of reasons.

The emotional stakes of Obi-Wan Kenobi were enormous — even if much of the outcome was already known.

And Obi-Wan Kenobi gives far more insight into Anakin’s tragic existence.

No one needed “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”
The Star Wars limited series on Disney+ was always going to tread familiar territory, picking up with the aging Jedi (Ewan McGregor) between events of “Revenge of the Sith” and “A New Hope.” Most characters’ fates were known between existing Star Wars shows and movies, which arguably lowered the show’s narrative stakes — but ultimately increased its emotional impact.
The final episode is as strong a case as any for “Obi-Wan Kenobi” to remain a one-season wonder. The show is six episodes of galactic therapy for fans and characters who spent years reconciling what happened between “Revenge of the Sith” and “A New Hope,” but it neatly threads that needle and doesn’t need to continue. McGregor may not reprise this character or utter the words “Hello there” ever again, but it is a satisfying sendoff that leaves the character with something resembling catharsis.

Will Disney's newest Star Wars series, "Obi-Wan Kenobi," come back for a second season? The show, which wrapped up its first season on June 22, was billed by Disney as a limited series, but that doesn't mean there isn't any chance for more episodes.
One person who's been vocal about wanting a season two? Ewan McGregor, who plays Obi-Wan. McGregor told Entertainment Weekly, "It was made as a one-off limited series. And in a way, it does do what I wanted it to do in terms of bridging a story between ['Revenge of the Sith' and 'A New Hope'] and bringing me closer to Alec Guinness's Obi-Wan in 'A New Hope.' And so, for sure, that's true." He continued, "Would I like to make another one? Yeah, I would like to make another one."

Obi-Wan Kenobi came to a dramatic conclusion Wednesday with its sixth and final chapter.
Given that there is still plenty of time on the clock following the final scene before the Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope timeline, there are questions about whether the series could continue.
If Disney+ is interested, two of the most important stars are on board to return.
McGregor, who plays Obi-Wan, opened up about more stories for the titular Jedi in an interview with GQ.
"I really hope we do another. If I could do one of these every now and again--i'd just be happy about it," he said.
As for Christensen, who plays Darth Vader, he said he's down to return in a potential second season or another Star Wars-related project.
"Well, it was definitely conceived as a standalone story. But I would love to continue with this character," Christensen told Radio Times.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” finale on Disney+.
“Obi-Wan Kenobi” has completed its six-episode run on Disney+, which begs the question: will the “Star Wars” series return for Season 2? “Obi-Wan” was developed and billed as a limited series, but so was “Big Little Lies” and “The White Lotus.” The series came to a conclusive end with young Leia being safely returned home, Reva overcoming the Dark Side and Obi-Wan back on Tatooine looking after Luke. There were no major cliffhangers, although Darth Vader still looms large. One person definitely eager for “Obi-Wan” Season 2 is the Jedi himself, Ewan McGregor.
“I really hope we do another,” McGregor told British GQ before the finale aired. “If I could do one of these every now and again — I’d just be happy about it.”

After a plethora of CGI creatures in The Hobbit trilogy, practical Orcs are back in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series headed to Amazon Prime Video.
“In an interview with Jamie Wilson, head of the prosthetics department on The Rings of Power, and Lindsey Weber, an executive producer for the series, we get more details on how the forces of evil will operate in this period of Tolkien’s vast fantasy saga. ‘We spent a lot of time talking about what it would mean to be an Orc in the Second Age. It felt appropriate that their look would be different, part of a wilder, more raw, Second Age, Middle-earth, closer to where the First Age ends.’ Weber said, describing the more desiccated, haunted look of the orcs that we see in the preview images that IGN has been given. ‘As we meet them, they’re not yet organized into armies,...

Oscar-winner Natalie Portman has no time for bad reviews because she knows the pendulum will usually swing the other way.
After Portman’s 1994 feature debut in “Léon: The Professional” was critically panned upon release, as well as her turn as Padmé Amidala in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy and later “Thor: The Dark World,” the actress now points out that these are among her most beloved films. And her work on films like the “Star Wars” prequels prepared her when “Dark World” became widely reviled as one of the MCU’s worst movies.
“I mean, I had it with ‘The Professional’ too,” Portman explained to Variety. “It was slaughtered critically, and now, despite having been in Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ movies, it’s the main thing people come up to me about. That and ‘Star Wars’ are two examples of things that when they came out, I was like, ‘Oh,...
