I feel like the horror genre has had a recent surge in movies that seem to centre on a certain theme or story, say a couples struggling relationship and then almost adding on anything horror-related after, or at least that’s how it seems. This is not necessarily a new or a bad thing but in the movies I have watched recently it does seem to be happening more than before.
Shot in the Dark focuses on a guy, William (Kristoffer McMillan), who is still struggling with something that happened in his life two years previous. Now suicidal, his career is failing and he has moved to his home town in the hope that old friends and familiar surroundings...

When we first see author William Langston (Kristoffer McMillan), he’s preparing to kill himself. He will spend much of the remainder of the film fighting for his life. These two things are only indirectly connected. A remarkable début from young Nevada filmmaker Keene McRae, this is a film inspired by the actions of a serial killer, yet for the most part it stays far away from the conventions of the genre. Although it contains some seriously gory scenes (not gratuitous but used to explicate the shocking effects of a clash between two very different ways of seeing the world), it is primarily interested in the internal, in the ways in which the killer’s brutality towards others mirrors William’s process of self destruction.
Stunningly shot, with what is probably the most striking cinematography of the year (courtesy of Ryan Baker), Shot In The Dark uses a melange of images first to immerse us.

Despite its precision film-making and a standout performance from Kristoffer McMillan, this bloody thriller is a grisly watch
This gory, lowish-budget thriller is quite competently made on a technical level, with umbral cinematography that is choreographed down to the millimetre along with the flash-cut-heavy editing and shrieky score and sound design. But it is not exactly a fun watch unless you really like lots of violence and jumbled-timeline puzzle stories. It feels like a calling card effort for the team that made it, which includes the co-writer and director, Keene McRae, making his first feature here as well as taking a supporting role, and the actors Kristoffer McMillan and Lane Thomas, who co-wrote the script with McRae and took on assorted other duties off camera. Good luck to them, because they certainly have skills, if a less assured touch with character building.

"Do you feel like someone has been in the house?" ShineHouse has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Shot in the Dark, from director / actor Keene McRae making his feature directorial debut. This first premiered at a festival in the UK last year, and it played at the Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival earlier this year. Lawton, Nevada’s once successful writer—now small town pariah—William Langston, fights for his life as the final victim of a serial killer. Over the course of one day, William is captured and tortured. The pain launches him into the past where he is forced to confront his unresolved trauma of 'love lost' and the actions that led him into this trap. The film stars Kristoffer McMillan, Christine Donlon, Kelley Mack, Keene McRae, Jacqueline Toboni, Austin Hébert, and Brandon Sklenar. Yeah it looks very creepy with a more distinct style than most serial killer horrors,...
