Appointed by the Nazis to the Council of Elders of the Lodz Ghetto after Germany conquered Poland; the extent of his collaboration with the Nazis is debated to this day. On 28 August 1944, Rumkowski and his wife were among those on the final transport which left Lodz for the notorious Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
