Buenos Aires (Argentina), July 16 (Ians) River Plate clinched Argentina’s Professional League Primera Division title with two match days to spare as they eased to a 3-1 home win over Estudiantes.
Lucas Beltran, Nicolas de la Cruz and Ezequiel Barco scored in the first half before Mauro Mendez pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 67th minute on Saturday night.
The result at the Monumental stadium leaves River with 57 points from 25 games, nine points ahead of second-placed Talleres Cordoba, a Xinhua report said.
The Buenos Aires giants are Argentina’s most successful team and now have 38 first-division titles, three more than eternal rivals Boca Juniors.
“All the credit goes to the players. This team represented the sentiment of our fans,” River Plate manager Martin Demichelis said after the match.

Manchester City are set to enter a new era this summer when the most sought-after manager in world football, Pep Guardiola, arrives at the club.
However, the City squad is in dire need of an overhaul, and this is set to be Guardiola’s most difficult job to date.
Pellegrini currently has the second oldest squad in the Premier League available to him, behind West Brom, and Guardiola will need to bring in a host of new players to enhance the squad and replace certain players who are now past their sell by date.
There are two clear problems that the current Bayern Munich boss must address: centre back and centre midfield.
When captain Vincent Kompany is not in the side, the Manchester City defence is nothing short of a shambles. No matter what combination of Nicolas Otamendi, Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis is sent out by Pellegrini,...

Lets face it, there’s too much money in football. It makes us mere mortals gawp in jealousy when we hear how much a player is pocketing per week, or how much it cost just for them to kick a football around somewhere different to where they used to.
It’s getting beyond ridiculous, but the Premier League is only getting richer. Bumper sponsorship deals, extortionate ticket prices, the mind-boggling figures television broadcasters will pay to show live matches – it all contributes. In turn, this means that England’s top clubs have the financial muscle to splurge preposterous amounts of money on some of the biggest stars in the game.
That’s not to say clubs get it right every time – £35 million for Andy Carroll is completely insane, and we’re looking at you Liverpool – but even the players with proven track records can...

The first major event match of the Premier League season is already upon us as the Champions face the close runners-up for the title of this season’s early pace-setters. Sadly, it might be a little early in the season to see the best of the teams, but it’s sure to be a hotly contested affair nonetheless.
Liverpool will be hoping to put on an impressive show for brand new signing Mario Balotelli, whose arrival was confirmed today, though unfortunately there will be no hyper-charged return to City for the Italian, as he wasn’t signed in time.
So far, City look the better side, having beaten Newcastle at a canter, but Liverpool looked a little out of sorts against Southampton. But with Lazar Markovic and Alberto Moreno expected to play a part, this might...

It’s difficult conjuring up sympathy for football players. Over the summer we saw Brazil and Chelsea pair David Luiz and Oscar reduced to floods of tears after their World Cup dreams were so unceremoniously shattered by a ruthless Germany – but don’t feel too sorry for them, because by the time the footballing world had taken in the shock defeat, they were back home being comforted by their stunning significant others.
Footballers have it all. More loaded than Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, garages crammed full of impossibly flash motors and the luxury of plying their trade in front of thousands of people at some of the country’s grandest stadiums and countless millions more watching at home around the globe. Oh, and don’t forget their hot wives and girlfriends.

Man City have today continued their summer building campaign with their first mega deal of the summer, bringing French-born Porto defender in for a massive £32m.
Having been signed to his first club at the age of just five, Mangala broke into the Standard Liege team at 18 and quickly earned a reputation as one of the Belgian league’s hottest prospects, and earning the attention of Porto in the process. In 2011 he signed for the Portuguese side – for just €7.5m – and continued his impressive progress, becoming an imperious central defender in the process over 50 first team appearances.
The defender has long been expected to move to Man City, having tried to bring the player in during the January transfer window, and he will now join up with the squad ahead of this Sunday’s season opener at St. James’ Park with Newcastle.

Can Manchester City overcome a two goal deficit when they face Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 encounter at the Nou Camp on Wednesday evening?
Team News
Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino has virtually a fully-fit squad to select from as his side prepare to welcome Manchester City to the Nou Camp.
Reserve goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto returns from a back injury but Jonathan dos Santos and Isaac Cuenca are sidelined.
Manchester City will be without Martin Demichelis following his red card in the first leg while centre-back colleague Matija Nastasic is out with a knee injury, meaning Joleon Lescott should start.
Sergio Aguero is fit again after missing out a fortnight ago due to a hamstring injury, but strike partner Stevan Jovetic is absent with a hamstring problem of his own.

The Champions League made its long-awaited return this week but the Barclays Premier League teams have Everest-esque mountains to climb in the second legs if they are to progress. At the 90 minute stage in both ties, Man City and Arsenal both find themselves 2-0 down against Barcelona and Bayern Munich respectively.
Optimism was rife amongst City fans before the game. With their free-flowing attacking home form they were relishing the chance to play the team Jose Mourinho labelled “the worst Barca team in years”. Arsenal were quietly confident as well, after their fantastic league form this year and their new-found resilience, which was arguably born when they defeated Bayern 2-0 in the Allianz Arena in last year’s Champions League.

Aston Villa are eyeing up a loan move for Manchester City’s out-of-favour defender Joleon Lescott, according to the Mirror.
Lescott’s contract at the Etihad is up in the summer and the centre-back has been told by City he can leave this month.
The 31-year-old grew up in Birmingham and is a big Aston Villa fan, though played for West Midlands rivals Wolves after graduating from their youth academy.
Lescott went on to have a spell at Everton before joining City in 2009 in controversial circumstances after forcing his exit from Goodison Park and completing a £22 million move.
The centre-half has made more than 140 appearances for the Citizens in a four-and-a-half season spell, but has since fallen way down the pecking order under Manuel Pellegrini.
The ex-Toffees star has not played a Premier League game in the New Year and has fallen behind the likes of Vincent Kompany and Martín Demichelis.

Premier League strugglers West Ham United have agreed a deal to sign Manchester City misfit Joleon Lescott and bolster their beleaguered defence.
England international Lescott, 31, is no longer first choice at the Etihad under Manuel Pellegrini since the signings of Matija Nastasic and Martin Demichelis.
Hammers boss Sam Allardyce is in desperate need of defensive reinforcements as James Collins and Winston Reid are injured whilst James Tomkins is suspended. The East London outfit landed Wolves reject Roger Johnson on loan this week, but were turned down by wantaway Everton centre back Johnny Heitinga.
The Sunday Telegraph revealed the three-and-a-half-year deal that will take Lescott to Upton Park contains a wage of £90,000 per week for the rest of this season. Thereafter his pay packet will be £70,000 – whether West Ham stay up or not.

With a star-studded squad at his disposal, Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has had little to complain about since taking over at the Etihad helm last summer. City are arguably as strong as any Premier League club in every position on the pitch, with an abundance of world-class footballers ploughing their trade in the blue half of Manchester.
With a squad as powerful as City’s, Pellegrini has a tough job to keep everyone content, with at least 2 players competing for each starting position. But not every player in City’s vast squad is absolutely essential to the Chilean’s trophy charge, with the club having several ‘fringe’ players (who perform little or no function in the first team) on their books.
Here’s a look at 5 of them who Pellegrini should consider letting go…

Manchester City have only lost one of their last 15 meetings with West Ham as Manuel Pellegrini’s team entertain the East Londoners at the Etihad in the Capital One Cup semi-final.
Jack Collison scored a second half winner for the Hammers at Upton Park in March 2009, but that is the only victory they’ve recorded over City since back-to-back wins in 2006. Sam Allardyce remains short of striking options, so West Ham fans shall fondly remember Dean Ashton’s brace during an Fa Cup run to the final.
The Hammers are not much better off defensively either and come into this two-legged tie off the back of four defeats in their last five. Big Sam chose the Fa Cup third round tie at Nottingham Forest to blood youngsters en masse – a move that resulted in a 5-0 thumping.

Manchester City put six past Arsenal in a high-octane encounter to continue their undefeated run at home and move to within three points of the Premier League leaders.
Theo Walcott scored twice to give the visitors a chance and Per Mertesacker headed a third, but goals from Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Negredo, David Silva, Yaya Toure and a brace from Fernandinho blew Arsene Wenger’s side away.
The Gunners could have opened an eight-point lead at the top of the table this evening but that never looked likely as it took Aguero just 14 minutes to break the deadlock, firing in from close range following Martin Demichelis’ headed flick-on.
Walcott levelled the scores when his shot into the ground deceived Demichelis and Costel Pantilimon 15 minutes later but Negredo ensured the home side went into half time in front after stabbing in Pablo Zabaleta’s cross.

Manchester City will have to cause an unlikely upset and affect a three-goal swing on hosts Bayern Munich to top Champions League Group D.
Both sides have already guaranteed their places in the knockout stages ahead of this clash. Munich need a point to clinch top spot, but boast a fearsome and strong home record.

Samir Nasri struck twice as Manchester City beat Swansea to preserve their 100% home record in the Premier League.
A further goal from Alvaro Negredo secured victory, to keep intact the Citizen’s record of being the only side in England’s top four divisions not to have lost on home soil.
Having prevailed 6-0 in their previous game against Tottenham, the question was not whether City would win, but how many they would win by, and that feeling was felt keenly when Negredo opened the scoring after just seven minutes.
The Spaniard drew a clumsy challenge from Jose Canas on the edge of the penalty area and there was little questioning who would take the free-kick, as the forward stepped up to belt his effort into the bottom corner of Gerhard Tremmel’s goal.
Nasri then ended the game as a contest in the second half, slotting...
