Outlander is a work of historical fiction infused with time travel between the 20th and 18th centuries. Series author Diana Gabaldon is a former college professor with a love of research who made it a point to include historically accurate material in her literary fantasy series. But, with nine novels published so far — plus six seasons on TV — there’s bound to be some mistakes. Here are five times Outlander wasn’t exactly historically accurate.
Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan | Starz 5. Claire Fraser and Geillis Duncan’s trial for witchcraft in ‘Outlander’ was out of date
The last witch trial in Scotland took place in 1722, according to The History Press. But when Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and her friend Gaeillis Duncan go on trial for witchcraft in Gabaldon’s first book, it’s 1743. This inaccuracy was actually done on purpose because Gabaldon wanted to have a witch trial in the story.

Outlander ‘s “The Skye Boat Song” is one of the most iconic songs of any TV show. With season 7 fast approaching, the show has secured legendary Irish singer Sinead O’Connor to put her own spin on the tune, and Outlander star Caitríona Balfe is more than impressed. Balfe recently expressed her excitement for O’Connor’s recording of the Outlander theme song, saying, “I am in awe.”

Outlander star Sam Heughan plays tour guide for a behind-the-scenes look at the Wilmington sets. “Welcome to our version of Selling Wilmington,” jokes Heughan as the nearly four-minute video begins. Heughan’s co-stars Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin point out key locations on the set, including where Bree met her real dad for the very first time.
Both Skelton and Rankin take the time to show off the cabin where their characters had their first love scene.
The set’s massive and Sam Heughan confirms it’s grown considerably over the years as they add more and more frontage. “Some of these buildings are only fronts. Others are indoor/outdoor,” explains Heughan, adding that one of his favorite new constructions is the Red Falcon that was built in season six.
“So in the middle of Scotland, we have this beautiful early American town and there’s more to come,” says Skelton.

The video also features clips from Outlander events, and Heughan and Caitriona Balfe profusely thanking the fans for being there for the series since episode one.

Jamie and Claire's story is coming to a close.
Starz revealed today that Outlander has been picked up for an eighth and final season, but the premium cabler has placed a series order for Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a prequel series from Matthew B. Roberts, Ronald D. Moore, and Maril Davis, who also serve as executive producers of the original series.
The 10-episode prequel series will center on the lives and relationship of Jamie Fraser's parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie.
"'Outlander: Blood of My Blood' is, at its heart, a love story. It will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain," says Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner and executive producer.

Starz has served up our first real look at two new key Outlander season seven cast members. The minute-and-a-half video introduces Outlander fans to Joey Phillips as Dr. Denzell Hunter and Izzy Meikle-Small as Rachel Hunter.
Phillips and Meikle-Small play siblings who have a very close, loving relationship. Phillips describes Denzell as a surgeon with a real desire to join the Continental Army because “he believes that liberty is a gift from God.” Rachel’s conflicted about Denzell’s decision but accompanies him anyway because she doesn’t really have anywhere else to go.
In the video, Izzy Meikle-Small confirms their season seven costumes will be very modest because they’re Quakers.
Season seven’s newcomers also include Charles Vandervaart as William Ransom, the secret son of Jamie Fraser. And Starz offers this description of Vandervaart’s character:
“Raised by his stepfather, Lord John Grey (David Berry), William, the ninth Earl of Ellesmere,...

If you’re expecting to tune in to Outlander and see the beautiful Scottish Highlands, you’ll be waiting years. The show’s scenery has just dramatically changed to a much warmer, more mysterious climate. The tales and lore of the Highlands are nothing compared to the dangers in the the 18th century Caribbean. All manner of pirates, superstition, and danger that came with colonization. Claire Fraser has been through a heck of a lot. Washing up on the shores of a Caribbean island? That’s new. The only way she and Jamie can survive long-term is to find each other again. Even then,

The upside to Claire and Jamie’s periods of separation on Outlander is that they each show their individual strengths. They’ve had to do so once without hope of ever seeing each other again. At least now they are in the same century, traveling the same ocean. What are they to do but stick it out on their respective ships? Claire in particular displays incredible strength in this week’s episode by upholding her Hippocratic oath under extraordinary circumstances. It’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last. No one can really understand how much Jamie and Claire have been

Warning: This post contains big spoilers from Sunday’s Outlander. Proceed accordingly.
Send Geordie out for some ash and steady your alepots, Outlander fans: We need to talk about Sunday’s episode.
The season’s sixth installment chronicled Jamie and Claire Fraser’s reunion after decades (and the previous five episodes) apart. The bittersweet, sexy homecoming at Alexander Malcolm’s Edinburgh print shop has become emblematic of Diana Gabaldon’s book series — the exchange takes place in Voyager, the third Outlander novel — and therefore carries with it all of the expectations readers have stacked up since the book’s 1993 publication.

A happy Christmas indeed! After what feels like and actually kind of was many years, Claire Fraser has officially landed back in the 1700s, thanks to a poem she quoted to Jamie when they were together, which he then quoted in a journal when he was working as a printer in Edinburgh. That discovery was what brought Roger to Boston, where Claire and Brianna were about to celebrate a rather unhappy holiday. Brianna was struggling after the revelations in Scotland, and now wanted to quit Harvard and move out of her mom's house. Claire was actually kind of angry at Roger's news, especially considering how upset Brianna was. But both Roger and Joe Abernathy encouraged her to go (though Joe...

Outlander‘s Claire Fraser doesn’t do things in half measures, does she?
When Lady Broch Tuarach runs afoul of local merchant Le Comte St. Germain in the Starz drama’s season premiere, she “inadvertently gets his ship destroyed,” star Caitriona Balfe succinctly puts it in this new video. And because the aforementioned businessman is a powerful and influential member of French society (who, we’ll soon learn, happens to dabble in the dark arts), that makes the Frasers’ new life as wine sellers/war preventers even more complicated than it already is.

I mean, obviously Claire and Jamie are sort of center and all that still. But yeah, it's really beautiful. The sets are fantastic -- so rich and so lush and the costumes are incredible, but you know what I've been really ...

The 2014-2015 TV season has come to a close, folks, and it’s been a terrific nine months, filled with some incredible television, including a whole host of new shows. However, what this TV season may be most remembered for is the onslaught of great female characters it gave us, all of them different in their own way. And that’s what’s most impressive about this group of fictional women: they’re all unique, none of them subscribing to the generic “strong female character” archetype that has been done time and time again in recent years. Yes, these women are strong, but they’re also vulnerable, honest, funny, determined, compassionate, loving, kind, and a whole bevy of other wonderful things. They’re complex, and they’re real, and it’s been fantastic to follow their journeys. These are the 14 best female characters of the 2014-2015 TV season. Claire Fraser...

L’Hopital Des Anges is a key location in the books as one of the main characters, Claire Fraser, volunteers there. She also gets treated there at one point in the 2nd book. Sister Angelique is currently just a guest character with the possibility of becoming a recurring fixture. Audrey Brisson has heavy background in stage work. Outlander season 2 has been approved for 13, new episodes to premiere sometime in 2016.

Outlander‘s feisty Claire Fraser certainly didn’t enjoy her new sister-in-law calling her “trollop” within minutes of meeting her, so it’s a good thing that her portrayer, Caitriona Balfe, is a much more understanding sort.
The actress cuts Jenny Murray — the very pregnant sibling of Claire’s husband, Jamie — a skein of slack when it comes to manners… and word choice… and basic human courtesy.
“When Claire and Jenny first meet, there’s a lot of tension coming from Jenny’s camp,” Balfe says, reflecting on the events of this past Saturday’s episode. “It’s funny. These...

Even the best witch’s spells can’t last forever.
In Sunday’s Outlander, Lotte Verbeek‘s alter ego found herself facing near-certain death for practicing witchcraft. It was an accusation she’d charmed her way out of for years, but when an angry mob made it clear that her days of summoning and potions were over, she did the 18th-century Scotland version of taking one for the team.
“That move she makes makes her utterly vulnerable,” Verbeek tells TVLine. “It really does. It’s a completely different side of Geillis… than we see at first when she’s being...

Which witch is the witchiest? It's certainly not Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe), who found herself in quite a bit of hot water in Saturday's episode of Outlander. (Spoiler Alert!) She was trapped in a hole, put on the stand at a very unfair trial, and then almost burned at the stake until she was rescued by Jamie (Sam Heughan). Claire's belief—or disbelief – in magic and the like is a major aspect of her character, despite the fact that she started the series by traveling back in time 200 years by touching a rock. She's basically Dana Scully in a corset. "Claire's belief in the power of reason and science is so strong within her that she almost is a little too...

Claire Fraser has a whole lotta problems, and a witch is one.
This week’s Outlander finds Jamie’s inquisitive wife getting caught up in Geillis Duncan’s murderous drama, and it’s no real spoiler to say that Lady Broch Turach’s plight will get much darker before it gets better.
Because with Jamie away on a Colum-ordered mission and Claire getting hauled into a police carriage with her accused murderess of a pal, life at the end of the episode is nowhere near as bonny as it is at the start.
Those first few moments, by the way?...

There was a confrontation and some big reveals in Saturday's night's episode of Starz's "Outlander."
(Spoiler alert! If you haven't watched Episode 110, bookmark this link to come back to later.)
Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) had to address the "ill-wish" with Laoghaire MacKenzie (Nell Hudson), and the confrontation resulted in some nasty insults, followed by a slap. Later, Claire learned something about another woman she had been associating with -- Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek). After watching her dance in the dark, Claire learned Geillis is Dougal MacKenzie's (Graham McTavish) mistress and she's carrying his child. She also learned ...

It's tough when the hot Highlander you've fallen for comes home from a long trip newly married to a Sassenach.
That's the problem young Laoghaire MacKenzie faced in last Saturday's mid-season return of "Outlander."
"It's a very horrible moment when she comes back," Nell Hudson, who plays Laoghaire (pronounced Leery), told Access Hollywood of Claire's return to Castle Leoch as Mrs. Claire Fraser (after having wed James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser), when we spoke to the actress in an interview conducted last year.

The following contains minor spoilers for Saturday’s midseason premiere, which was made available for us prior to broadcast.
Returning to its original time and place after a lengthy hiatus, Starz’s Outlander comes back to TV this Saturday, looking ready and raring to finish off its first season as confidently as it began. A popular book series but an unknown quantity as a show, Outlander’s humble 2014 beginnings gave way to a bona fide hit for the network, with the final episode before the break doubling viewership from the pilot. Now that a receptive audience is practically a given, the only question left is whether the show’s momentum will carry forward after a six month pause.
The short, unsurprising answer: tomorrow night’s Outlander is more Outlander. That might sound dismissive, but the simple fact is that the midseason premiere is very much the next episode in a...

"Outlander" wrapped up the first half of Season 1 on Starz with a heart-pounding episode of surprises (like that delightful wee laddie cameo), suspense, heartbreak, interrupted outdoor romance, death, shock and one jaw-dropping ending.
