It’s time to observe a moment’s silence; PlayStation Home is nearing the end because, from tonight, the social gaming platform will be shut down for good.
Home launched to users on December 11, 2008 amidst a lot of industry fanfare and hype. It was championed by Phil Harrison, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, who painted an image of a slick, virtual 3D world where gamers could meet and talk in cyberspace, away from the competitive environment of online multiplayer.
It combined elements of the Sims and Second Life with popular RPGs, giving users a “home space” to customise and furnish with objects earned through playing mini-games. But interest in Home quickly started to wane as Sony struggled to capitalise on its full potential. More often than not, it was used by game studios to advertise their latest offering.

From British director Phil Harrison, comes this UK/South Africa co-production, titled The Good Man, which tells two parallel stories that intersect in unexpected ways. Michael is a young Irishman whose life is looking up on all fronts. He has a family he loves, good friends and a promising career. Sifiso, meanwhile, is a bright, sharp teenager living in an informal settlement on the outskirts of Cape Town - although he is hoping for a place at university and a brighter future. When their stories collide, their impact on each other’s lives is far greater than either could have imagined. Elegant in its simplicity, The Good Man is a sobering meditation on our globalised...

Sony is notorious for the 10-year life cycles of their consoles, but what about Microsoft? Apparently a new console each decade is now the norm, as Microsoft’s Corporate VP Phil Harrison has stated that with the launch of Xbox One, gamers will be embarking on a “more than 10-year journey.”
Harrison’s comments came at Microsoft’s Eurogamer Expo keynote earlier today, where it was conveyed to the audience that Xbox One will be able to evolve slowly over time, keeping it relevant for a decade’s time at least. Various strategies will enable this, including those based on cloud technologies.
Harrison said the following regarding Xbox One’s long-term presence.
“For us, it’s not just about the launch date. It is about the start of the journey where the console will be improved and will be adapted and changed.”
Retroactively improving or upgrading a console, huh? Software...

At the end of July, Microsoft announced some pretty significant changes to its publishing policies. With the new ID@Xbox program, indie developers will be able, in theory, to create, publish, and sell their games on the Xbox Live Marketplace with few restrictions.
The news was met with much joy and the popping of champagne corks (I'm assuming), but don't expect it to bear fruit any time soon -- the first ID@Xbox games probably won't be out until next year.
"I don't think we're going to see things at launch. I don't think it's realistic to see a developer get the programme and build a game and get it into the market on November 22," Microsoft's Phil Harrison told Games Industry when asked about a first wave of self-published Xbox One games. "It's reasonable to expect in early 2014 we'll start seeing the first games come through."

With next gen gaming soon to be hitting us flush in the face brinkmanship between Microsoft and Sony is coming to the fore. There have been more twists than a Chubby Checker playlist so far in the preliminary scuffle for market share. It looked as though Microsoft had got it all wrong and would pay dearly but for their impromptu reversal over numerous contentious policies. Sony looked to be coasting along on a wave of gamer adulation only to have themselves reeled back in with Microsoft’s suprise offer of a free digital copy of FIFA 14 with ‘all’ pre-orders for Xbox One in Europe.
News broke last week though that Microsoft were changing this very much in demand deal. Microsoft’s social marketing manager Graeme Boyd took to Twitter to clarify the situation. He stated:
“Had a few questions on this so wanted to clarify: FIFA 14 will only come free...

Though he’s obviously biased, Microsoft’s Phil Harrison believes that when the Xbox One launches, it will provide gamers with “the best line-up of games in the history of consoles.” An ambitious statement, no doubt, but one that may actually be true.
“Ultimately it’s the games that make Xbox One stand out, and we have the best lineup of games–we think–in the history of consoles,” Harrison said. ”We clearly have strong exclusive games, and we have partnered with EA to bring FIFA to Europe in a very meaningful way. Football in Europe is the sport, and in some countries it’s the religion.”
Currently, there are 23 titles that have been announced for launch and with games like Watch Dogs, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Forza Motorsport 5 and Call of Duty: Ghosts on the list, among others, Harrison may just have a point.

Los Angeles (AP) — Microsoft has its head in the cloud with Xbox One.
The company focused on how cloud computing will make games for its next-generation Xbox One console more immersive during its Monday presentation at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the gaming industry's annual trade show. Microsoft announced last week that the successor to the Xbox 360 must be connected to the Internet every 24 hours to operate, and the system would ideally always be online.
"The platform features and capabilities exclusive to Xbox One allow developers to push the boundaries of creativity and take gaming in completely new directions," Microsoft Vice President Phil Harrison told the crowd.
The upcoming console's cloud computing capabilities were demonstrated by fleshing out dense environments in third-person open-world games like the zombie-fighting sequel "Dead Rising 3" and cartoony shooter "Sunset Overdrive." The racing simulator "Forza MotorSport 5" introduced a feature called "drivatar," which mimics players' driving styles and...

Phil Harrison, Microsoft’s corporate vice president, revealed in an interview with Eurogamer that the next-generation Xbox One hardware will be merging all games into one convenient location for the new platform.
The Xbox 360’s current dashboard separates the gaming section into three distinct categories, Xbox Live Indie, Xbox Live Arcade, and On Demand titles. This separation of content into discrete channels has made it easy for users to access exactly what they’re looking for. Yet, it seems that Microsoft is hoping to make it even easier to access and find the gaming adventures you’re craving as Harrison stated:
“With Xbox One and the new marketplace, they’re games. Just games. Search, recommendation, what your friends are playing, game DVR – these all go to helping you discover the games you want to play, so I think we solve fantastically some of the challenges that independent developers face, particularly...

Mixed in among all of the disappointing, frustrating, and downright stupid announcements at Microsoft’s Xbox One press conference yesterday, was a small bit of goods news concerning an improvement in Xbox Live. We already knew that current Gold subscribers would be covered on both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, but we are now hearing that multiple profiles on a single console will be able to access one Gold subscription.
Speaking to Polygon, Microsoft’s Phil Harrison revealed the good news, saying:
“If you have an Xbox Gold membership today for 360 and you buy an Xbox One, your membership applies to both systems. You don’t have to get another subscription… Anybody who has usage privilege on that machine can use it.”
Microsoft’s Ben Kilgore expanded on how Xbox Live will work on the next-gen console by giving an example of a father and son sharing one Gold membership...

The gaming industry is changing, and with that change digital distribution has slowly grown into a significant way for gamers to purchase their favorite titles. With the push into digital content, Microsoft has decided to shift their focus into the wave of the future while maintaining support for retail.
Microsoft VP, Phil Harrison, recently unveiled the company’s new London studio which is appropriately named, “Lift London.” The studio serves to expand the cloud market by establishing entirely new IPs that Microsoft hopes will extend the success of cloud gaming with original content. Harrison expanded on what Lift London means to the company:
“I wanted to create from scratch a 21st century studio. Not a studio that would make retail products. A studio that would make games for the cloud. Putting together the most incredible talent ever seen in a start-up. The shift is from packaged goods to connected products.

A couple days ago Microsoft lost one of the biggest names in the industry in Peter Molyneux, the man behind the Fable series and Black & White. Today Microsoft announced that former Sony Executive Phil Harrison would be replacing him as head of Microsoft Game Studios. Harrison is credited with being one of the best talent finders in the industry, with one of his biggest finds being Media Molecule (the developers of Little Big Planet).
