Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? I'll get this out of the way now: Harry Potter is not on this list. I only mention this as I was excoriated back in...

News that Asif Kapadia's brilliant Formula One documentary Senna has somehow failed to make the shortlist for the best documentary category at the forthcoming Oscars should come as no surprise to anyone au fait with the ludicrous irrelevance of the Academy Awards. These are, after all, the same awards that deemed Werner Herzog's epochal Grizzly Man unworthy of a nomination in the same category a few years ago on the most specious of technicalities. The fact that this foolhardy oversight should have occurred in a year in which the UK has produced not one but two fabulously insightful portraits of the need-for-speed industry somehow makes the error all the more laughable. Two documentaries which we implore you to watch this year have to be Senna and TT3D: Closer to the Edge. Both movies do feature motor-sport as a core area of the movie but as you’ll see when you watch them, neither are really about the sport but the people who take part in them.
By vividly recounting the Tt’s legendary rivalries and the Isle of Man’s unique road racing history, this 3D feature documentary will discover why modern Tt riders still risk their lives to win the world’s most dangerous race. The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy is the greatest motorcycle road race in the world, the ultimate challenge for rider and machine. It has always called for a commitment far beyond any other racing event, and many have made the ultimate sacrifice in their quest for victory. A story about freedom of choice, the...

Arthur (12A)
(Jason Winer, 2011, Us) Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Garner, Luis Guzmán. 110 mins
You can see what they were thinking: "it worked for one difficult-to-market English comic, so let's try it again". But somewhere between the moon and New York City this romcom seems to have lost some of its spirit and spontaneity. There are some snappy lines and funny moments, but Brand's overprivileged wastrel is nowhere near as cuddly as Dudley Moore's was – or as convincingly drunk. Sometimes, hair of the dog isn't the answer.
How I Ended This Summer (12A)
(Aleksei Popogrebsky, 2010, Rus) Grigory Dobrygin, Sergei Puskepalis. 130 mins
Spare and distinctive two-hander set in remote Arctic Russia, where the endless daylight, monotonous work, some terrible news and a touch of radiation exacerbate generational differences to deadly levels.
Pina (U)
(Wim Wenders, 2011, Ger/Fra/UK) 104 mins

Commercials director Richard de Aragues has made a substantial cinematic mark with the thrilling documentary TT3D: Closer to the Edge (in cinemas now).
We talked to the filmmaker recently (alongside Ian Hutchinson, who managed the previously unprecedented feat of winning the five solo races in last year’s Tt) about the use of 3D to tell the story, and how the racers felt seeing their lives up close and personal.
If you missed our interview with Guy Martin yesterday, you can also check that out here.

If you’ve ever wondered what the appeal of riding is, no matter how we bikers try in vain to convert you to two wheels from four, Richard De Aragues’s new documentary film is an excellent place to start. Ok, it’s the extreme version of riding, but it absolutely hammers the message across in the bluntest and rawest of terms.
TT3D: Closer To The Edge is an exhilarating and heart-stopping adrenaline rush full of big ballsy biking, which like the race magic the petrol-head ‘gladiators’ cherish, draws you in and injects you with the Tt lunacy drug. And from some of the people present at our screening, attended by two of the riders in the film, Ian ‘Hutchy’ Hutchinson and John ‘Sheep Skin’ McGuinness, you don’t have to ride to begin to understand the passion of dicing with death – and the biking bug. With the utterly entertaining Elvis-and-Wolverine cross,...

Richard De Aragues chose the 3D format for his new film TT3D: Closer to the Edge, which is out on the 20th April and documents the action and drama that takes places every year at Isle of Man motorcycle races. With TT3D in mind, we decided to compile a list of 3D films which demonstrate its uses in a variety of genres since the 1950s. Interestingly, the medium has scored big hits in the animation department.
Kiss Me Kate (1953)
The light-hearted musical Kiss Me Kate, which was based on Shakespeare’s sexist comedy, was part of the 3D surge of the 1950s. It took 3D technology to its then limit, with dancers spinning off the screen, chorus girls stepping into the audience and sparkling Technicolor—a true trend-setter for the 3D to come. MGM were paranoid about television so decided to up the ante with Technicolor productions, widescreen...

We’ve got a new trailer from the film to show off along with a new poster. It might be worth checking out especially given the visual thrills of things moving very, very fast… in 3D!
