Former State Department chief of staff Margaret Peterlin has been hired by At&T in a newly created external and public affairs executive post.
Peterlin will have the title Senior Vice President-Global External and Public Affairs, reporting to David McAtee, At&T’s general counsel. She had been a key lieutenant to Rex Tillerson during the former Secretary of State’s rocky year in the cabinet.
The hire is part of a revamp of the company’s formidable lobbying operation following the embarrassing disclosure that it had paid Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s scandal-plagued former attorney, as a consultant. Word about Cohen’s hiring got out at the worst possible time for the company, during the climax of the high-stakes trial of a government antitrust lawsuit over its acquisition of Time Warner. CEO Randall Stephenson’s reaction came swiftly.

Washington — Rudy Giuliani told HuffPost on Friday that President Trump “denied” the At&T-Time Warner merger, proof that he was not influenced by Michael Cohen after he lined up At&T as a consulting client as the transaction was under review.
Trump “did drain the swamp…The president denied the merger. They didn’t get the result they wanted,” said Giuliani, Trump’s lawyer.
It was unclear if Giuliani misspoke, but his comment on its face would validate an argument that At&T-Time Warner tried to advance before a recent six-week antitrust trial — that they were singled out for antitrust enforcement by the Justice Department because Trump didn’t want it. At&T CEO Randall Stephenson has said that the “elephant in the room” in the Justice Department’s lawsuit is Trump’s influence. Trump repeatedly has bashed CNN, a unit of Time Warner.

At&T CEO Randall Stephenson called the hiring of President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, damaging to the company’s reputation and a “big mistake.”
Stephenson made the admission in a memo circulated to employees on Friday, which announced that At&T’s lead lobbyist, Bob Quinn, who oversaw the hiring of Cohen, would be retiring.
“Our company has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons these last few days and our reputation has been damaged,” Stephenson wrote to employees in a memo obtained by Deadline. “There is no other way to say it — At&T hiring Michael Cohen as a political consultant was a big mistake.”
The wireless carrier hired Cohen’s firm, Essential Consultants, within days of Trump being sworn in to provide advice on a range of issues, including the company’s pending $85 billion acquisition of Time Warner. At&T entered into a $600,000 contract...

Washington — At&T CEO Randall Stephenson said the hiring of Donald Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, was a “big mistake,” and he announced the exit of its top executive in Washington, Bob Quinn.
“Our company has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons these last few days and our reputation has been damaged,” Stephenson wrote in a letter to employees on Friday. “There is no other way to say it — At&T hiring Michael Cohen as a political consultant was a big mistake.”
He added, “To be clear, everything we did was done according to the law and entirely legitimate. But the fact is, our past association with Cohen was a serious misjudgment. In this instance, our Washington D.C. team’s vetting process clearly failed, and I take responsibility for that.”
He said for “the foreseeable future,” its external and legislative affairs group, based in Washington, will report to General Counsel David McAtee.
