(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we cap off spooky season with the perfect meld between horror and action: the hallway fight in "Attack the Block.")
Do you feel that chill in the air? Halloween is once again upon us, providing the timeliest of reminders that the concepts of action and horror need not be mutually exclusive. Experienced viewers know full well that some of the best examples of either genre tend to share quite a few interests, whether it be James Cameron's "Aliens" taking a more militaristic approach than the claustrophobic, slasher-like original did or horror maestro John Carpenter staging a feature-length action sequence out of a classic horror premise in "Assault on Precinct 13," as we last covered in this column. As tempting as it was to focus on...

Ready for an Attack the Block sequel? Last year, it was confirmed by the original star, John Boyega, that a sequel to the cult favorite was finally coming. The first came out in 2011 and followed South London teenagers who must defend their neighborhood when alien creatures invade the place. It was a fun romp that saw Boyega’s career skyrocket thanks to his performance in the sci-fi action film. Spoiler Alert, Boyega and his crew managed to save the day, but could there be more aliens on the horizon? The exact plot details of Attack

For years we’ve been hearing that writer/director Joe Cornish and actor John Boyega have been talking about making a sequel to their 2011 alien invasion film Attack the Block (watch it Here). The project was officially announced last year – and now Boyega has revealed to the folks at Collider that he and Cornish have been crafting the story for Attack the Block 2 together.
Boyega said,
The story has actually been presented by myself and Joe Cornish. We’ve collaborated heavily on making a story that makes sense for Moses and the other characters, and the new characters that will be coming up in the sequel too. And then, also, there’s different perspectives in writing it, with Joe having his perspective and me having mine. London has changed so much, in so many different ways, over the years since the first movie. We’re just trying to make...

The 2011 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards I know the Oscars are still a little over a month away, but for me the RopeofSilicon Awards are the moment I begin putting the old year behind me and truly begin focusing on the new one. This is the fourth year I've done this and to celebrate the year's films I gained inspiration from one of the movie posters I declared one of the best of the year and put together my own poster for just this occasion, taking images from several of 2011's films and creating the collage you see below. The poster is made up of films and performances I enjoyed on one level or another, and while you'll find a couple of duplicates here and there, all-in-all there are 61 films represented and I've included a high resolution version should you want to give it a closer look. How many of the films can you name?...

A group of juvenile delinquents have to defend their neighborhood from an alien invasion.
What went wrong? The idea of school aged children squaring off against aliens to thrawt off an invasion seems like a surefire kind of idea. So again, what went wrong with Attack the Block? Part of it is the pacing. There is long stretches where not much of anything happens. Part of it has to do with the fact that Attack the Block never captures the sense of joy, the sense of wonder & awe that is childhood. But a big part of it, has to do with this manfactured feeling that rings throughout all of Attack the Block. The characters say cool things while cool music plays in the...

Attack The Block Blu-RaySony Home Entertainment2011/Rated R/Running Time 88 minsList Price: $35.99 -- Available October 25, 2011John Carpenter once said that when a filmmaker has limited resources, the more creative they are. In an age where most films that stand a chance of making an impact at the box-office have already been backed by millions upon millions of dollars, its rare to see low budget features at all, let alone a good one. It remains to be seen whether or not Joe Cornish's Attack the Block will make an impact at the box-office, but it definitely has the makings of a cult classic. His incredibly funny, exciting and inspiring action-horror-comedy features a simple story with performances that go above and beyond most big budget f/x pictures. At times one can feel the budget restraints of the production, yet they are not flaws, just enjoyable quirks that work surprisingly well in service of the experience.

Chicago – Here’s a directorial debut made with such an assured sense of style and craft that one wishes it were more fun. All the ingredients are here for a splendid cult classic: deadpan gags, live-action aliens, a fresh-faced ensemble and R-rated violence all wrapped in the blessings of Edgar Wright and Nick Frost. Yet “Attack the Block” sounds a lot more fun on paper that it is in execution.
For all of its considerable charms, the picture is irrevocably marred by the least likable protagonists in recent memory. The blame cannot be placed on the young actors, who are all game and energetic. It’s the script by first-time feature director Joe Cornish that lets them down. As a cinematic rule of thumb, it’s generally a bad sign when viewers start growing impatient over waiting for the so-called heroes to get killed off.

Nick Frost (.) and Luke Treadaway face an alien invasion in Attack the Block.
A low-income London housing project is turned into an intergalactic battleground in the British science-fiction comedy Attack the Block.
Yes, the story is that simple: a teen street gang in South London (Leeon Jones, Simon Howard, John Boyega) is attacking a pretty nurse (Jodie Whittaker) when they’re interrupted by an object falling from the sky and landing in a nearby car. Emerging from the vehicle is a small alien creature, which the gang subsequently kills. Hoping to gain fame and fortune, they take it to a local drug dealer (Nick Frost, Shaun of the Dead) for advice. Unfortunately, all they end up getting is a fresh wave of bigger and angrier aliens, who drop down to Earth for payback and planetary domination.

My initial thoughts on Attack the Block following early trailers and marketing was that the film could well be too limited in its wider appeal, thanks to the very strong regional feel, but that skepticism quickly evaporated in the presence of some serious genre credentials and painstakingly observed generic conventions, as soon as the film got into its swing. On the surface it may look like a grime-infused “Ends” opera, accessible only to those from the areas depicted in the film, but the film is also injected with a great deal of allegorical interest. Within the confines of this straight-up sci-fi thriller, there are messages of criminality, of disenfranchisement and of the hope in personal triumph.
Since its cinematic run of course, events in Britain (and the poorer areas of London) have added a weighty gravitas to the political undertones of the narrative, with the obvious ingrained feelings of disenfranchisement...

[1] Attack the Block's theatrical run is almost at an end, but fear not -- you'll be able to watch it from the comfort of your own home soon enough. The "cult classic in the making" [2] will hit shelves October 25 on Blu-ray and DVD. Whether you missed it the first time around or just really loved it and want to see it again and again, it's worth checking out on disc. Though the film is small in scope, it crams more action, laughs, and intelligence into a lean 88 minutes than many films do in 120. There's a reason it's become a /Film favorite over the past few months. Written and directed by Joe Cornish and executive produced by Edgar Wright, the film revolves around a south London street gang who must defend their housing complex when it comes under attack by terrifying monsters from outer space. The immensely talented John Boyega [3] plays the tough,...

Attack the Block is the British two-fingered salute to Super 8.
It explores what would happen if real kids (the kind that rob unwary passersby of their cellphone and jewelry at knife-point) were the first to realize their community was the target of an alien invasion. There's not a lovable TV-complexioned mop-top in sight as the surly street hoods deal with the first invader the best way they know how - with some illegal fireworks and a switchblade.
As is always the way with alien invasions, the reconnaissance scouts are always the smallest, non-threatening version of the species. And, inevitably, there's a boatload of back up. While the kids - a diverse group of mid-teens led by Moses (John Boyega) - congratulate themselves on their...

Coming out of the streets of South London, Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block is already generating almost universal positive buzz. Having seen the film a total of three times, each time with a different crowd of varying sizes, my worry was the experience of seeing the film would diminish every time. Or did it somehow grow at a rate that most films don’t do today? I could be a bit of an annoying prat but I won’t be like that because I think of all of you like my fam. Attack the Block is, quite simply, my favorite movie of the year. Hands down. You should read more below to see why.

Trainee nurse Sam is walking home to her flat in a scary South London tower block when she’s robbed by a gang of masked, hooded youths. She’s saved when the gang are distracted by a bright meteorite, which falls from the sky and hits a nearby parked car. Sam flees, just before the gang are attacked by a small alien creature that leaps from the wreckage. The gang chase the creature and kill it, dragging its ghoulish carcass to the top of the block, which they treat as their territory.
While Sam and the police hunt for the gang, a second wave of meteors falls.

Attack the Block
Written by Joe Cornish
Directed by Joe Cornish
UK, 2011
2011 has not been a banner year for the Hollywood blockbuster. Bloated sequels and limp comic-book adaptations have made a trip to the multiplex a dismal choose-your-own-adventure of mediocrity. What makes Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block so fresh and lively in comparison to its American counterparts? On the surface, it appears to be another hyperactive geek fantasy about prepubescent kids saving the world, a narrative we’ve already explicitly seen once this year already (Jj Abrams’s would-be opus Super 8), not to mention the general glut of alien-invasion flicks.
What immediately distinguishes Attack from its American counterparts is its willingness to risk alienating the audience from the opening seconds. Our first view of Moses (intense, charismatic John Boyega in his first acting role) and his young gang of hoods is not a pleasant one; they surround and intimidate a nurse,...

If there was one department in which J.J. Abrams. Super 8 was sorely lacking . outside of a more satisfying ending . it was the .fun factor.. While the scenes where the group of nascent filmmakers were trying to make their monster movie was light-hearted and enjoyable, too much focus was put on the horror/sci-fi elements of the story, which made the film thrilling, but decidedly less fun. Joe Cornish.s Attack the Block, on the other hand, is not only an entertaining, lively ride, but captures that incredible Amblin spirit as well. Set in South London, the story centers on a group of young hoodlums (John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, Simon Howard) causing trouble on Guy Fawkes Night. After cornering and mugging a young nurse (Jodie Whittaker), they see something fall out of the sky and crash into a nearby car. Going to investigate, they discover that...

Hot damn! If you thought J.J. Abrams Super 8 was good, you're going to absolutely love the Joe Cornish directed film Attack the Block! I heard nothing but great things about this movie before I saw it, so I was going in with some pretty high expectations. But good lord, I feel bad that maybe my expectations weren't as high as they should have been. Attack the Block rocked the theater with it's pure awesomeness, and is seriously one of the most entertainingly fun movies I've seen this year. It utterly blew me away, and I can't wait to watch it again.
You know what? This movie has sparked a conflict in my mind. I've spoken very highly of many of the summer films this year, but in a way this epic but small indie film with a first time director, and a full cast of unknown actors kind of...

There is a new Attack the Block Red Band trailer, which shows some of the alien invaders, bloodied. They leave the mothership July 29th, when Attack the Block releases in some theatres throughout North America. Have a watch of the clip below and get set to see some of the more cheeky material from this upcoming sci-fi thriller in this mature rated trailer.
The synopsis for Attack the Block is here:

Believe it. As each new week passes, it is looking more and more likely that Joe Cornish‘s Attack the Block is the most fun you’ll have at the movies this summer. To celebrate Screen Gems nailing down a July 29th release date in major cities, we now have a brand new red band trailer. I’m glad I avoided most of the trailers and clips before seeing the film, and I advise you to do the same. If you must, this newest one packs an example of the energy the entire film has running through its veins. The Edgar Wright-produced film stars Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker, John Boyega, Simon Howard, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, and Alex Esmail. Check out the red band trailer below.
Synopsis:
The film follows a gang of tough inner-city kids who rob Sam (Whittaker) as she is walking home in a scary South London tower block.

After Screen Gems picked up SXSW favorite Attack The Block it was up in the air when we would see it. Joe Cornish‘s monster horror/comedy/drama/thriller was released last month in the UK, but we weren’t sure whether its Us distributor would pick a Halloween slot or an enticing summer date. It’s now been confirmed via Box Office Mojo that it will land on July 29th, 2011. Expect a big Comic-Con showing the week before since this entertainer is about the most geek-friendly film of the summer, next to Cowboys & Aliens, opening the same day. It will also square off in a packed weekend against Crazy, Stupid, Love. and The Smurfs.
I had the pleasure of seeing the Edgar Wright-produced film starring Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker, John Boyega, Simon Howard, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, and Alex Esmail at a NYC screening a few weeks ago.

Photo: Screen Gems Reading the press notes for writer/director Joe Cornish's feature debut, Attack the Block, and learning how the project came together is almost as much fun as watching the film itself. In very brief terms, the idea came to him after being mugged ten years ago and then watching M. Night Shyamalan's Signs. The result is a sci-fi, alien invasion comedy in which a gang of teenage thugs are forced to defend their South London tower block from outer space marauders, thus the apposite tagline, "Inner City vs. Outer Space."
While you could probably call it something like Goonies meets Gremlins meets Half Baked, this nevertheless feels like a wholly original product you simply don't want to miss.

Attack the Block is a movie I’ve wanted to see ever since it screened in London a couple of weeks ago. It’s the first feature film by Director Joe Cornish who you may know from Adam and Joe fame and is Executive Produced by none other than Edgar Wright.
This evening’s screening took place at the Alamo Drafthouse and was a fantastic venue to debut the British film to an International Audience. Being there as a Brit who comes from about 4 miles away from where they filmed was somewhat odd but equally cool! As you’ll see from if you look at the various tweets which have gone out this evening, Attack the Block went down extremely well with concerns the slang used in the movie pushed aside as you’ll see in the Q&A when I get it uploaded.

The teenage stars of Attack the Block, a new sci-fi movie by Joe Cornish being praised for its authentic depiction of youth culture on a London estate, talk slang, crime and modern policing
I'm surrounded by chanting teenagers. Five of them, eyeballing me and repeating: "Blood, blood, blood." "Cuz, cuz, cuz." "Trust, trust, trust." It's quite unnerving, a bit Lord of the Flies. "Bruv, bruv, bruv." "Oi, oi, oi." "Y'get me? Y'get me? Y'get me?"
They stop, point made. "See?" says one of them. "You see how it can be overplayed?" They are the young stars of Attack the Block, a new sci-fi film directed by Joe Cornish that pits a gang of south London estate kids against gorilla-like aliens that invade their tower block. On Wednesday night, Joe Cornish’s aliens versus yoofs action comedy extravaganza Attack the Block had its Leicester Square Premiere. In attendance was much of the cast and crew, as well as a few of their high profile friends and collaborators. Blogomatic 3000 was at the red carpet to chat to the great and the good and to take some barely publishable photographs. First to talk to the press was Cornish’s school yard chum and weird-weekender, Louis Theroux, who was happy to talk about his old cohort. “He had a lot more direction than I did,” Theroux said. “He always knew he wanted to be a director and be in show business and he and [long-time creative partner] Adam Buxton formed a company called Joe-Ads in which they were going to release a number of films and Joe had a plan of about five films he was going to make.
