The Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen and new play Stereophonic, about a fictional band in the 1970s, led the Tony nominations with 13 nominations each.
The Outsiders, a musical based on the 1967 S.E. Hinton book, followed with 12 nominations and the revival of Cabaret, starring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, followed with nine nods.
With its 13 noms, Stereophonic set a record for the most Tony nominations for a play, surpassing previous record holder Slave Play’s 12 noms in 2020.
Stereophonic‘s surprisingly strong performance even included a best score nomination despite it being a play.
In the best musical category, Hell’s Kitchen and The Outsiders were nominated, alongside the dance-based show Illionise, with music from Sufjan Stevens’ album and a book by Justin Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury; Suffs, a musical about the women’s suffrage movement with a score and book by Shaina Taub; and Water for Elephants, based on the 2006 novel,...

Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.
While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. Of the five productions cited for Best New Broadway Musical, only “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Suffs” made the cut in the all-important Best Score category. They were joined by two Off-Broadway entries, as well as...

“Character is kind of where I start from,” explains Jocelyn Bioh, “I feel like all of my work is character driven narratives.” She made her Broadway debut as a playwright this season with “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” at Manhattan Theatre Club, a play bursting at the seams with unique characters. “Sometimes I don’t actually know where I’m going,” says Bioh of her process, “I just know what the character is, and I’ll just start writing and see what they say, see where it kind of leads me.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
In the play, audiences are dropped into the titular Harlem braiding shop where they soon grow intimately familiar with the stylists and clientele. “We played games and we laughed. And I felt like that was where the trust really began,” recalls Zenzi Williams of a pivotal potluck where she and her “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” cast members bonded. Manhattan Theatre Club presented the critically lauded new play by Jocelyn Bioh on Broadway during the fall, with many journalists tipping their hat to the synergy of its ensemble cast. According to Williams, their strong “sense of play” was born out of the closeness that the company felt during that initial dinner party. “We kind of brought that into the space and it just blossomed from there,” she explains. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Williams portrays Bea in the play, a veteran stylist at the titular Harlem braiding salon. The actress infuses Bea with an exuberant, no-nonsense attitude. Though her mood is soon tampered by younger stylists who steal her clients. The closeness...

“It is a pretty great crop of plays this year, several that have become big commercial hits,” declares Sam Eckmann about the many dramas and revivals in contention for nominations at the 77th Tony Awards. Sam and I met for the very first time this season to discuss the 15 productions eligible for nominations, reviewing our picks in seven of the 11 play categories. Watch our 2024 Tony Awards slugfest above.
In the top category of Best Play, we overlap on four of our five predicted nominees: “Stereophonic,” “Prayer for the French Republic,” “Mother Play” and “Patriots.” While I tentatively pick the upcoming “Mary Jane” by Amy Herzog for the fifth slot, Sam backs “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” by Jocelyn Bioh, saying it “got amazing reviews, enough to break in here.” We also discuss a possible surprise nomination for either “The Cottage” or “Grey House.” The other eligible productions are “I Need...

Eschewing the standby glamour of venues such as Radio City Music Hall or uptown NYC’s United Palace, the 77th Annual Tony Awards have selected Lincoln Center’s Great Stem-sized, roughly 2,600-person capacity David H. Koch Theater as the Broadway bash’s newest venue. The live event will air on CBS on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
The Tony Awards eligibility cut-off date for the 2023-2024 season is Thursday, April 25, 2024 for all Broadway productions which meet all eligibility requirements, and committees will meet at several points in the year to determine category placement and burning questions.
A few of those that will arise are whether the David Byrne-Fatboy Slim musical “Here Lies Love,” the Josh Gad-Andrew Rannells comedy tuner “Gutenberg! The Black Women on Broadway Awards are returning following last year’s successful inaugural in-person event.
Dedicated to celebrating the legacy and achievements of Black women in the Broadway community, the 2023 Bwob Awards will honor three talents in New York at the Knickerbocker Hotel on June 5 for their work at the highest level of commercial live theater in the U.S.
“We saw with our first-year celebration how necessary it was, how people left in tears and were so elated to be in a space where they didn’t have to be anything other than the Black women they are. There was such a freedom in the room, a vulnerability that is not often felt,” Bwob co-founder, The Piano Lesson star and Tony nominee Danielle Brooks tells The Hollywood Reporter about the group’s decision to return for 2023.

More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.
The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”
Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

Like mariners shipwrecked in “The Tempest,” tormented by a conspiring God, or Macbeth at Dunsinane, the cast and crew of Shakespeare in the Park’s “Merry Wives” faced promethean odds. New York City is getting another shot in the arm this summer with Free Shakespeare in the Park’s happy Merry Wives, playwright Jocelyn Bioh’s embraceable adaptation of the Bard’s The Merry Wives of Windsor starring Watchmen‘s Jacob Ming-Trent as that great, rotund creation Falstaff.

The Public Theater’s Free Shakespeare in the Park production of Merry Wives will begin performances next month with audience capacity at Central Park’s Delacorte Theater expanded significantly over what was previously announced.
Though masks will be required for audiences at the beloved New York summertime institution, audience size will be expanded from the previously announced 428 to 1,468, or approximately 80% of the 1,800-seat Delacorte.
“We are thrilled with the news that we will be able to welcome far more New Yorkers into The Delacorte than was previously possible,” said Artistic Director Oskar Eustis. “What better sign that New York is returning than our theater in Central Park full of laughter, applause, and excitement.”

And now that the initial shock has faded? “It’s a fun place to,” she begins, then backs up a bit. “Well, not ‘fun.

New York’s Free Shakespeare in the Park production this summer of Merry Wives, a comedy adaptation by Jocelyn Bioh of the Bard’s Merry Wives of Windsor, will feature an all-Black cast including Jacob Ming-Trent (HBO’s Watchmen), Gbenga Akinnagbe (Broadway’s To Kill A Mockingbird), Shola Adewusi (CBS’ Bob Hearts Abishola) and Susan Kelechi Watson (NBC’s This Is Us).
The Public Theater announced the complete casting today, along with new dates for the staging in Central Park’s Delacorte Theater: Performances will begin Tuesday, July 6 (instead of the previously announced July 5) and run through Saturday, September 18 (an extension of three weeks from the previously announced engagement). The official opening night is Tuesday, July 27.
The extension is designed to compensate for current social distancing procedures that will require limited audience capacity of 428 at the 1,800-seat Delacorte. The audience capacity could be expanded if state requirements for small- and medium-sized venues change before July.

Netflix lets the bug in the system stay broken as Russian Doll wakes up to season 2.
Fun is for suckers. Bad attitude keeps the party going. And going. Netflix renewed its time-loop comedy Russian Doll for season 2, according to Deadline. The repeat of Natasha Lyonne’s semi-autobiographical take on the Groundhog Day will consist of eight episodes, Lyonne and Netflix vice president of original content Cindy Holland announced at Recode’s 2019 Code Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.
"Same show, just weirder," Lyonne confirmed at the conference.
Russian Dolls was co-created by Lyonne, who stars in every episode and directs, Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler. The series follows Nadia Nadia Vulvokov, played by Lyonne, a coder who is forced to re-live her 36th birthday on an endless loop of dying and coming back to life, waking up every morning to Harry Nilsson’s song “Gotta Get Up."

Editor’s note: Last week, John Boyega and others expressed outrage over an exchange from the fifth episode of Season 2 in Spike Lee’s Netflix series, “She’s Gotta Have It.” The scene finds Nola Darling (DeWanda Wise) and her black British lover Olu (Michael Luwoye) debating the impact of black British actors in Hollywood. The conversation eventually expands to the British involvement in the transatlantic slave trade and other major historical issues. Many viewers have taken particular issue with Nola describing black British actors as “cheap” and essentially ignorant of their own history, suffering from “Stockholm Syndrome.” Boyega saw a viral clip of the scene circulating online and simply labelled it “Trash.”
Boyega’s tweet was picked up by numerous media outlets. In response, the episode’s writer, Barry Michael Cooper, wrote a letter to Boyega, which he has provided to IndieWire below.

A series about reliving your death over and over again has the making for a great comedy but it also runs the risk of, as the premise suggests, repetitive. But the Netflix comedy Russian Doll steps up to the challenge with co-creators, executive producers and writers Leslye Headland, Amy Poehler and Natasha Lyonne (who also stars) leading the charge. At Deadline’s Contenders event, the trio talked to Dominic Patten about the deja vu-centric show and how it has created a whole new bingeing experience.
Russian Doll follows a young woman named Nadia (Lyonne) on her journey as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party one night in New York City. One night she falls down the stairs and dies and then she is transported to a certain point in the same evening when dies again…and then it happens again…and again. The whole series is an...

A musical version of The Outsiders, based on both S.E. Hinton’s groundbreaking 1967 Ya novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film version that introduced a generation of young actors who would dominate the screen for years to come, will make its world premiere next year at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre.
Though there currently are no plans for the musical beyond Chicago, the production’s creative team has significant ties to New York and Hollywood. The musical’s book is written by Adam Rapp, whose plays have been staged at, among other venues, New York Theatre Workshop and Rattlestick Theatre, and his film and TV credits include The L Word, In Treatment and The Looming Tower.
