From the confines of the Witness Protection Program, “Icarus” co-star Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov filed an April 30 lawsuit against Mikhail Prokhorov, the billionaire owner of the Brooklyn Nets. Both men hail from Russia, where Rodchenkov — tasked with overseeing the Olympic Anti-Doping Laboratory in 2014 — says the government ordered him to help dozens of their nation’s cheating athletes bypass testing for performance-enhancing drugs. Rodchenkov’s mea culpa came via The New York Times and the aforementioned Bryan Fogel film, which won Netflix this year’s Best Documentary Oscar.
Three Russian athletes accused of doping in Sochi — Olga Zaytseva, Yana Romanova, and Olga Vilukhina, who were stripped of their silver biathalon medals and banned from future Olympic competition — sued Rodchenkov for libel in February. Prokhorov is paying the biathletes’ legal fees for the New York State Supreme Court case.

Only Stephen Colbert can go over to Russia and get a one-on-one interview with a Russian oligarch, only to help the guy set up his Tinder profile. Over at the “The Late Show’s” Russia week, Colbert arranged a meeting with Mikhail Prokhorov, a friend of Vladimir Putin’s who made a fortune when he was allowed to buy a nickel mine for just pennies and then sold it just before the 2008 financial collapse. But what is an oligarch? “Over there the political system’s controlled by wealthy elites who buy influence and pull strings of the government. While in America,...

For day three of "Russia Week" on The Late Show, Stephen Colbert visited Mikhail Prokhorov – the Russian billionaire who owns the Brooklyn Nets – to gain a better understanding of power in a country ruled largely by a small cadre of the uber-rich.
"This is how things work over in Russia: over there, the political system is controlled by wealthy elites who buy influence and pull strings of the government," Colbert explained. "Whereas in America," he deadpanned, "we speak English."
The rest of the segment lacked that political bite. During his time with Prokhorov,...

Basketball fans might dedicate their time, energy and finances to supporting their favorite team — but could they ever afford to buy one?
Probably not. The average NBA franchise is worth about $1.36 billion.
So just how wealthy are the owners? Miami Heat owner Micky Arison, a 67-year-old Israeli-American businessman, has a net worth of $7.1 billion.
Since buying the Heat in 1995, the team has won three NBA finals: in 2006, 2012, and 2013. His other business — Carnival Corporation, for which he isn the chairman — hasn’t done too poorly either. It’s currently the world’s largest cruise operator.

Donald Trump is taking himself out of the running to buy the Brooklyn Nets ... telling TMZ Sports he won't even consider making a bid for the NBA team now that they're up for sale. Of course, Trump flirted with the idea of buying the Buffalo Bills last year ... and it seemed like the guy was pretty serious about adding a major professional sports team to his portfolio. But last night, after having dinner with L.

George Lopez ain't a fan of Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov -- saying he's not just shocked the guy is "bailing" on the team ... but couldn't believe he would do something as "low" as trading the coach. Lopez was out in D.C. when he heard the news that Prokhorov is looking to sell the team -- less than 5 years after buying the majority share of the Nets for $223 million. "That guy's bailing on them already?...

He’s on the road to developing Roc Nation Sports agency, so Jay-z had to say goodbye to his role as part owner of the Brooklyn Nets.
The “99 Problems” rapper explained that while he may not be on the investor roster, he still has love for the team.
Jay began, "Being a member of the Nets organization surpassed some of my greatest ambitions. It was never about an investment; it was about the Nets and Brooklyn. My job as an owner is over but as a fan it has just begun. I'm a Brooklyn Net forever. It's been an honor to work with Mikhail Prokhorov, Dmitry Razumov, Christophe Charlier, Onexim Sports and Entertainment, Brett Yormark and all the wonderful people involved in making the Nets first class.”
“My sincerest thanks goes to Bruce Ratner, who first introduced the idea of moving the Nets to Brooklyn. A thank you and deepest appreciation goes to the fans.

The Brooklyn Nets have fired head coach Avery Johnson following a disappointing 14-14 season start. This was to be the first year in Brooklyn for the former New Jersey team, and Johnson's third year as head coach -- the final year in his contract.
Johnson was leading a 2012 team with more than $80 million in player payroll, and expectations were high.
Part of that payroll is going to Kim Kardashian's estranged husband, Kris Humphries, who's currently on the bench with an abdominal strain.
Sports Illustrated reports Johnson's firing comes on the heels of public criticism by point guard Deron Williams.
The Nets are owned by Jay-z and Mikhail Prokhorov. In a statement, about the termination, Prokhorov says, "The Nets ownership would like to express thanks to Avery for his efforts and to wish him every success in the future," owner Mikhail Prokhorov said in a statement."...
