20th Century Studios deserves recognition for listening to fan demand, as not only has Prey received a physical media release — virtually unheard of for a Hulu original — but it’s an impressive one. Not only does it carry exclusive extras, but there are 4K Uhd and Steelbook options to boot. (Hopefully we can convince them to do Hellraiser next!)
An audio commentary with writer-director Dan Trachtenberg, star Amber Midthunder, director of photography Jeff Cutter, and editor Angela M. Catanzaro is included alongside a making-of featurette, a FYC panel with cast and crew, and more.
Here are eight things I learned from the Prey commentary…
1. The Predator originally infiltrated the 20th Century Studios logo.
The 20th Century Studios opening title card originally featured Predator’s laser target and the logo went invisible like the creature’s cloaking mechanism as the fanfare dropped out.

A huge streaming hit for Hulu last year, Dan Trachtenberg’s Emmy-nominated horror movie Prey is now available on 4K and Blu-ray, and this week 20th Century Home Entertainment has released a Deleted Scene that’s included in the physical release’s bonus features package.
The deleted scene is titled “Treetop Chase,” and indeed it spotlights an intense sequence wherein the Predator chases hero character Naru across the treetops. This sequence never made it into the movie, and all that exists is a rough pre-visualization of the concept.
Trachtenberg tells Polygon, “The pre-vis sequence… I was so stoked on. But I was worried about [the treetop chase] being too fancy for the movie. And we really had to nail the execution for it to not feel goofy when so much of the movie and its action is quite grounded. As excited as I was for that kind of physicality, of Naru and...

Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.
Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.
Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

Game music isn’t just for gaming nerds anymore. It’s finally being recognized as real, “serious” music. This year, the Grammys introduced a new category for video game music: Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media. The music has evolved along with the video game artform, as scores increasingly lay the emotional groundwork for an immersive experience.
What’s notable about numerous modern game soundtracks is their cinematic scope, involving lush orchestrations, heavy percussions, kinetic solos, propulsive vocals, and eurythmic atmosphere. Just like people become emotionally...

A return to form for the "Predator" franchise, "Prey" did a tremendous job of elevating the original concept to new and improved heights. The subversive prequel manages to be a bloody ode to the first film while packing a ferocious punch that sets itself apart from other entries in the franchise. Moreover, "Prey" blends horror and action through its gruesome visuals and bone-chilling sound, bound together with an epic, adventurous musical score by Sarah Schachner. The composition is not only a deviation from other creature features in the genre, but it came about after director Dan Trachtenberg and composer Schachner realized the "Prey" needed to move away from contemporary movie scores.
One film in particular served as the initial inspiration for musical bits of the latest "Predator" flick. According to the director, Jóhann Jóhannsson's score for Denis Villeneuve's "Sicario" was used as temporary music during the editing process for "Prey.

“Prey” composer Sarah Schachner factored in two elements when scoring the 1700s-set entry in the “Predator” franchise. “We were making a ‘Predator’ film with all the fun gory action and suspense you’d expect, but the music had to simultaneously tell Naru’s emotional story and her evolution,” she says.
The action thriller, set in the Comanche nation, follows Naru, played by Amber Midthunder. Naru is hungry to prove her abilities as a hunter, but she gets more than she bargained for when a deadly dreadlocked alien makes contact and begins to hunt for sport.
Schanchner’s biggest challenge, she says, was to find the balance of the score feeling equally large and expansive as well as intimate and raw to match the 18th-century natural setting. Says Schachner, “The key was to not be afraid to say something in a film with so little dialogue.”

“A long time ago, it is said, a monster came here.”
An all-new action-thriller from 20th Century Studios directed by Dan Trachtenberg, Prey is the latest entry in the Predator franchise. Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, Prey is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to prove herself a worthy hunter. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien Predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.
The story opens September, 1719, the Northern Great Plains.
They waste No time starting a story that is both beautiful, and terrifying. It introduces the characters artfully, never feeling rushed or incomplete, and sets up the social dynamics of the tribe well enough that you get to know...

The Predator franchise has been a remarkable exercise in longevity despite diminishing returns for 35 years. As such, a scaled-down and retitled prequel reduced to streaming fodder seems an unsurprising move at this point––or at least the only feasible one. The tragic irony is that Prey, a Dan Trachtenberg-directed addition set 300 years ago, is the first franchise entry that is as good (and at times a mite better) than the original.
Part of that success is a general boiling-off of any extraneous mythology or overwrought concepts. Here, much like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1987 close encounter, Prey relishes the simplicity of an indefatigable hunter, their quarry, and the wilderness in-between. In the Comanche Nation circa 1719 we’re introduced to Naru (Amber Midthunder), a skilled hunter hellbent on proving herself to the rest of her camp by tracking and killing a mysterious beast stalking the wilderness nearby. In addition to an impeccably trained dog,...

There’s a reason that the title of the new Predator film doesn’t contain the word “Predator.”
It’s not because there isn’t a fearsome alien on hand who hunts down humans and other species for the sheer enjoyment of it. Rather, it’s that this fifth entry in the long-running franchise (not counting the Alien vs. Predator entries, discuss) differs rather dramatically from its predecessors. For one thing, it has a heroine instead of a hero, who happens to be a young Indigenous woman. For another, the story takes place some 300 years ago in the Great Plains, so the most formidable high-tech human weaponry on display are the muskets wielded by French fur trappers. Despite all this, Prey, premiering domestically on Hulu, winds up being one of the more formidable installments in the series.

Composer Jesper Kyd is returning to the “Assassin’s Creed” franchise. He will score the upcoming “Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla” alongside Sarah Schachner, who worked on “Assassin’s Creed: Origins” and, more recently, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.”
Norwegian musician Einar Selvik will team with the pair to create original songs for the soundtrack.
Fans of the original and Ezio trilogy will be delighted that Kyd, a Danish composer, will score the ‘Valhalla’ Viking quest. His “Ezio’s Family” theme is one of the franchise’s most enduring compositions. Kyd’s additional credits include “Borderlands 3,” “State of Decay 2” and “Warhammer: Vermintide 2.”
Kyd, who has been scoring games since 1995, has seen gaming music come a long way. Scoring sessions are now done with full orchestras and the end result run anywhere from three to five hours of original music covers different aspects of the game.
Selvik is another fitting addition to the “Assassin’s Creed” universe.

The 10th annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards rewarded a diverse crop of composers, songwriters and music supervisors who contributed to film, TV and videogames over the last year, from scorers Alan Silvestri, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Marco Beltrami and Michael Abels to tunesmiths Cynthia Erivo, Bebe Rexha and the Avett Brothers to Quentin Tarantino’s longtime music sidekick, Mary Ramos.
The ceremony also included several performances, with rockers Jakob Dylan and Michelle Phillips (of the Mamas and the Papas) offering a sample of the ’60s pop that helped “Echo in the Canyon” win the award for best music documentary; composer Kris Bowers performing an excerpt from his music for Netflix’s “When They See Us,” which won him best original score for TV/limited series; veteran writer Charles Fox doing a medley that included his vintage themes for “Happy Days” and “The Love Boat”; and a rendering of Diane Warren’s...

It’s been a hectic week for those who enjoy listening to their favorite video game soundtracks on vinyl. A few days ago, it was announced that the soundtrack to Undertale, the darling of the indie RPG scene, would be getting a release on vinyl in the form of a double LP collection. And not long before that, UK-based indie record label Data Discs announced their partnership with Sega to release the soundtracks for both Golden Axe I and II on a single record. Now, earlier today, iam8bit revealed that they’ll be teaming up with Activision to release the soundtrack for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare on vinyl.
However, unlike most soundtrack releases, iam8bit is handling things a little bit differently this time around. Rather than attempting to fit the game’s entire soundtrack into one package, the music will instead be split up across two separate releases.

Imagine if you had the power to bring a loved one back from the dead. But as a result of this resurrection, the person brought back to life is not quite the same as they were before their demise. The “playing God” formula has been around from the original Frankenstein to Pet Sematary and Re-animator but it’s likely never been done with less style, imagination, or coherence than the new horror/sci-fi dud The Lazarus Effect.
“This pig smells like shit” is the profound opening line of The Lazarus Effect, which centers on Frank (Mark Duplass) and Zoe (Olivia Wilde), an engaged pair of university research scientists who have achieved the impossible—bringing the dead, foul-smelling Porky back to life! After another successful test run on a recently deceased pooch, Frank, Zoe, and their team (Donald Glover, Sarah Bolger and Evan Peters) are ready to unveil their breakthrough to the world.
