Exclusive: Jenny Slate has unveiled Seasoned Professional, a new stand-up special from A24 that’s set to premiere on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide on February 23rd.
This is her second special, on the heels of 2019’s Stage Fright for Netflix, a mix of stage time, funny stories about adulthood, and conversations with family in her childhood home, which was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award. Check out a clip from her new hour above.
With her new special, Slate aims to show that being brave for love is worth it — even when it comes to pushing out a baby, stalking your therapist, or trusting your partner not to destroy you. It comes on the heels of her journey to the Oscars with Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, the acclaimed stop-motion feature based on characters created with Dean Fleischer Camp, which she co-created, co-wrote, co-produced...

The 2023 Oscars hit almost all the right notes, with Jimmy Kimmel doing a terrific job of hosting, starting with a monologue that acknowledged last year’s slap heard around the world. Kimmel used his opening bit to point out there are 16 first-time acting nominees, including two from Encino Man – Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan.
Kimmel poked fun at Babylon for being a bust at the box office and noted Batgirl is the first superhero to be defeated by an accounting department. He also confirmed James Cameron declined his invitation, joking that you know a show is too long when even Cameron can’t sit through it.
“Some of the critics are saying Jim Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a ‘Best Director’ nomination. And, well, I find that very hard to believe about a man of such deep humility. He does have a point. I mean,...

It turned out that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was pretty much everything to every Oscar voter. Of its 11 nominations, it won seven, including the big one: Best Picture. The last Best Picture winner to win that many statuettes was “Gravity” in 2014.
“Eeaao” started off strong when Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. Then Jamie Lee Curtis nabbed Best Supporting Actress and, later in the evening, the Daniels took home Best Original Screenplay. By the time it won Film Editing, the seemingly unstoppable breakout hit‘s momentum was undeniable. It then went on to triumph in Best Director, Best Actress and finally, Best Picture.
Much of the evening went according to Steve Pond‘s predictions in his final analysis of the race. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” won Best Animated Feature, the first award of the night, and “Navalny” won Best Documentary. During his acceptance speech, “Navalny” director Daniel Roher...

‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio’ Wins Five Trophies Including the Top Prize at the 50th Annie Awards
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio topped the 50th Annie Awards for animation, collecting five prizes including best animation feature, direction (del Toro and Mark Gustafson), character animation, music and production design.
“Fuck,” said del Toro as he and Gustafson took the stage to accept the directing award. “I hope to stay with you as peers with this beautiful, beautiful craft we have.” He noted that he’s been directing for 30 years and “the most creative ideas-filled group I worked with is animation.” Del Toro added his hope is that the community pushes the medium for future generations and “change the way we are perceived as a medium, not for us, but for the people coming up.” He got laughs and cheers as he wrapped by exclaiming, “Can I say, I wanted an Annie so much!”

This marks the sixth year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Animated Feature predictions.)
Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.
The method of determining the nominees has also changed. Gone is the system where voters scored a film from 6 (poor) to 10 (excellent) with only those movies meriting an average mark of at least 7.5 eligible for a nomination.

Now the Oscar race can really begin. The year’s biggest breakout indie hit, A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” led the pack of nominees for the 95th Academy Awards that were announced this morning, with 11 nods, including Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress (x2) and Supporting Actor. It was followed by Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” with nine apiece. Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” picked up eight nods and Universal’s “The Fabelmans” took seven.
Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams announced the nominees live on Tuesday from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. It was the first in-person nomination announcement with press in attendance since before the pandemic.
As Steve Pond, TheWrap’s Executive Editor, Awards, noted in his final predictions, with the Academy bigger and more international than ever before, it was likely they would throw several surprises.

Seen as the main precursor to what you might expect on Oscar nomination morning, the nominations for the 2023 Ee BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, and Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” gained even more steam as a major awards threat, with an impressive 14 nominations in total. The movie equals Ang Lee’s 2001 “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the film not the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.
Other films that had a strong showing in overall noms include “The Banshees of Insiherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10 each), “Elvis” (9 noms), and “Tar” (5 noms), but possibly the most surprising inclusion was that both leads of the acclaimed indie “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” — Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack — scored leading actress and actor nods, respectively.

Jenny Slate is pretty memorable as an entitled dry-cleaning client twirling a chihuahua around her head in Everything Everywhere All at Once, but it’s her role as an animated shell with one googly eye that really captured attention this season. In Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, we’re given a full-length feature version of the character Slate co-created with director Dean Fleischer Camp back in 2010. Voicing Marcel and leaning into her improv skills to help cook up the comedy character’s quirky and poignant dialogue, Slate explains why she thinks Marcel’s miniature perspective has inspired so many, and why this gig suits her so much better than SNL ever did.
Deadline: Years ago, you came up with the voice of Marcel when you and Dean and some friends were squashed into a hotel room at a wedding. What part of you was speaking through Marcel back then?...

The Writers Guild of America has released the ballots for their film categories for their annual WGA Awards, and while it is always notable what scripts are deemed ineligible due to the guild’s more restrictive qualifications, this year has a wide variety of significant cuts.
Looking at the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay categories in particular, the WGA requires that a film be written under the WGA Minimum Basic Agreement, or under a similar collective bargaining agreement with a WGA-approved organization for international titles. Consequently, many independent, international, and animated features are left out of contention including already decorated scripts like Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” an NYFCC Best Screenplay winner, and Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun,” the Best Screenplay winner at this year’s British Independent Film Awards.

The first phase of the awards season will be fully underway starting in the Big Apple. Beginning with the Gotham Awards where “Everything Everywhere All at Once” triumphed, the New York Film Critics Circle will be the first major group of film journalists to reveal its winners on Friday, Dec. 2.
Members of NYFCC will be voting without seeing James Cameron’s sci-fi spectacle “Avatar: The Way of Water” and Marc Forster’s Tom Hanks-starrer “A Man Called Otto.” The first screening for Kasi Lemmons’ Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” with Naomi Ackie took place on Wednesday evening, but it’s unclear how many of the members, if any, attended. Reactions to the film are also under embargo for several weeks.

Here’s a new film that proves that the unlikeliest of movie heroes can emerge from the most unexpected places. And this hero is really unlike the action icons who’ve been dominating the multiplex for the last couple of months. He has no spacecraft like Lightyear, nor a fighter jet like “Maverick” or even a cape like Doc Strange and Thor. He does have…a shell. Yes, while many films have been taken from books, TV shows, and comic books, this one sprung from the worldwide web. Actually, it’s an extension of three online short films that started delighting viewers since 2010. Oh, and short is the word, as this fella’ has to navigate in our everyday world, which just towers over him. But somehow there’s a big, big following for Marcel The Shell With Shoes On. And it just might grow larger, while he remains “teeny-tiny”.

Short-film star Marcel the Shell from the viral shorts “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” is embarking on a feature-length journey.
Comedian Jenny Slate, screenwriter Dean Fleischer-Camp and screenwriter Nick Paley reunite to explore more of Marcel’s story. The upcoming A24 film, “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” was developed after two short films of the same name, created by Slate, Fleischer-Camp, Paley, and producer Elisabeth Holm, in 2010.
More than a decade later, the trio has elaborated on Marcel’s backstory in this feature film. The “beloved character” Marcel, voiced by Slate, embarks on a journey to find his missing family. The screenwriting trio maintains Marcel’s quirkiness and friendly demeanor through the highly anticipated stop-motion mockumentary.
But, how exactly can audiences watch Marcel the Shell’s journey?

This review of “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” was first published Sept. 5, 2021, after its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
After so much bad news over the past – oh, it’s been awhile – many viewers might be in the mood for entertainment that’s a little sweeter, gentler and kinder. Enter the adorable and effortlessly charming Marcel the Shell (Jenny Slate), a one-eyed, child-like anthropomorphic shell living in an Airbnb with his grandmother, Connie (Isabella Rossellini).
They are the only two shells remaining in the home after a devastating upheaval tore their community away from them when the couple (Rosa Salazar and Thomas Mann) who lived at the house split up, accidentally carrying off Marcel’s family and friends. But these two tiny creatures have since learned to survive, making the best of their microscopic world through creative means.

In 2010, when filmmaker Dean Fleischer-Camp and then-partner Jenny Slate made the three-minute short “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,” they couldn’t have predicted the fame to come. Over a decade later, the viral hit about the talking seashell who rambles off charming life philosophies has been adapted to a surprise feature-length film that landed at Telluride this week without warning.
The movie’s existence after all this time is the result of a long journey for the two collaborators, who separated in 2016. The original “Marcel” short (which played Sundance and AFI) found Slate voicing the eponymous stop-motion shell with a single googly eye who made charming, high-pitch observations about his low-key life. Following the viral acclaim, Fleischer-Camp and Slate made a sequel in 2011 followed by a pair of illustrated children’s books. In the meantime, the filmmaker and standup comedian fielded serious offers for a character they never expected...

It’s nostalgia time at the ole’ multiplex once again. So, is it a tender coming of age story set in the 50’s, or a raunchy comedy with the stoners of the 60’s? Nope, it’s a family “dramedy” set in the long ago 1990’s !?! Aw, come on! I can get the 80’s “throwbacks’ with TV shows like “The Goldbergs” and “Stranger Things”. And this Summer’s big animated hit Despicable Me 3 even has a villain (Balthazar Bratt) whose whole schtick was that tacky decade. But the 90’s already? Excuse the venting, I know I now know how my folks must’ve felt about “Happy Days” in the 70’s. Despite the era, this new flick seems closer to the NYC intellectual upper class (upper East side) quirky slice of life cinema forged by Woody Allen. So. let’s set the cinema “way-back” machine to 1995, when few folks had cellular phones,...

Chicago – It takes a collaborative village to make a movie, and part of that collective came to Chicago to promote “Landline.” Director Gillian Robespierre, Co-Writer Elisabeth Holm and debut actress Abby Quinn were essential to the film, which is set in 1990s New York City and features Jenny Slate in the lead role.
“Landline” refers to the 1990s period just before the tech/mobile phone boom and the loss of grit in urban New York City. Based on the growing-up experiences of Gillian Robespierre and co-writer Elisabeth Holm, the story is about transitions… Dana (Jenny Slate) to adulthood, the last days of being a teenager for her sister Ali (Abby Quinn) and the dissolution of their parent’s marriage (as portrayed by Edie Falco and John Turturro). It has a bit of a “slamming doors” edge to it, as misunderstandings and family connections blend into a very human story. Slate,...

Chicago – Jenny Slate keeps getting more high profile, both in voiceover work (“The Secret Life of Pets”) and as an actress. Her latest film is “Landline,” her second with director Gillian Robespierre. In the film, Slate portrays an engaged-to-be-married “adult” who is having trouble coming to terms with her life.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A charming delight in a retro timeslip. Gillian Robespierre and Jenny Slate continue their rampage of creating wonderfully, memorably flawed women onscreen. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Manhattan, 1995. It is a strange land of payphones on street corners, dot-matrix printers, and smoking indoors in public places. It was a time when the lack of smartphones, unlimited texting, and social media made it possible to actually take a break from someone without having to ghost them. This is the realm in which 30something Dana (Jenny Slate: The Lego Batman Movie) exists as finds herself needing some space from her fiancé, Ben (Jay Duplass: Paper Towns); we could see that she maybe wasn’t really into the whole marriage idea before she admitted it to herself.

[Warning: The following story contains spoilers for Landline.]
The 1990s-set indie dramedy Landline is often described as a reunion of the star (Jenny Slate), writer-director (Gillian Robespierre) and writer-producer (Elisabeth Holm) of Obvious Child. But the Amazon Studios movie, currently in theaters, also marks the first major film role for Abby Quinn, who plays teenage younger sister Ali.
At the beginning of the film, Ali has seemingly isolated herself from the rest of her family, mouthing off to her parents and her adult sister Dana (Slate). But after she discovers, via floppy disk, that her father (John Turturro) is having...

Jenny Slate, Gillian Robespierre and Elisabeth Holm have gotten really good about finding the comedy in what could easily be seen as something tragic.
The actress, writer-director and writer-producer, respectively, went from an abortion rom-com, Obvious Child, into a movie about infidelity and divorce that also happens to be a '90s-set comedy. Landline, out today, is set in 1995 New York and follows two sisters, played by Jenny Slate and relative newcomer Abby Quinn, and a mother (Edie Falco) discovering and handling the fallout of their dad/husband's (John Turturro) affair in their own unique ways.

Talk about a hard act to follow: Landline brings together the same sublime actress (Jenny Slate) and filmmaker (Gillian Robespierre) who put a sting in the tail of every joke in Obvious Child, their 2014 romcom about abortion. Ok, their movie about a stand-up comedian negotiating the pitfalls of 21st-century romance dug deeper than that pithy description – and the duo's follow-up also offers far more than meets the eye. But there's something missing that’s hard to pin down.

The team behind the well-received indie Obvious Child — star Jenny Slate, writer-director Gillian Robespierre and writer Elisabeth Holm — has reunited for a second film, this time tackling the truths behind awkward familial relationships in the '90s-set Amazon studios movie Landline.
One of those huge truths actually comes in the form of some lies, with the storyline centering around two similar-but-different issues with infidelity in two of the characters' relationships. Dana (Slate) is stuck in a boring engagement she's not sure she wants to pursue and finds solace in an ex-boyfriend. At the same time, her teenage sister, Ali (Abby...

In Landline, Slate plays Dana who along with her sister Ali comes to find our their father, played by John Turturro (The Big Lebowski, Transformers), may have been cheating on their mother.
