It’s easy to think that the latest offering on Disney+ will be yet another inspirational, underdog sports movie. After all, the film concerns a 16-year-old Asian-American high-school student who sets out to prove that he can perform a slam dunk despite his underwhelming 5’8” height. So you can expect that by the end of Chang Can Dunk the titular hero will defy the odds, defeat his foe and win the hearts of everyone concerned. Right?
Well, yes and no. Writer-director Jingyi Shao covers all those bases (wrong sport, I know), including the obligatory training montage and the introduction of a wholesome romantic interest. But the filmmaker, making his feature debut, also has more interesting things in mind, delivering a darker, more complex story that nonetheless proves utterly heartwarming by the end.

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "The Mandalorian."
Last week, the internet absolutely lost its mind trying to decide how much time Grogu spent training with Jedi master, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Though nowhere near as controversial as the pro-Grogu vs anti-Grogu debate, it's definitely up there as one of the most hotly contested topics that "The Mandalorian" has sparked. It will no doubt rage on as the third season continues, especially as we get to see the former Jedi-in-training put his newly expanded skillset to use.
Once upon a time, Grogu's connection to the force was only used in dire circumstances... like force-choking potential enemies and stealing cookies! Now the little guy is capable of so much more: like stealing candy, spinning desk chairs, and escaping mortal danger in the depths of Mandalore. And as we continue to see Grogu in action, I'd like to propose...

Major spoilers for "Cobra Kai" season 5 follow.
Just in time for back-to-school season, the doors of the "Cobra Kai" dojo are open once again. Netflix's teen karate sensation returns to the streaming giant with an epic season 5 that could easily serve as the show's overall conclusion. After a devastating loss at the All-Valley Tournament, Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) have shuttered their dojos and are prepared to leave karate behind. With John Kreese (Martin Kove) in jail for assault, Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) is now in charge of Cobra Kai, and he's started to expand his empire throughout the San Fernando Valley.
Knowing first-hand how dangerous Terry can be, Daniel enlists an unlikely partner to protect his family from Silver. Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) travels all the way from Okinawa to come to Daniel's aid, and the former enemies conspire to bring down the ponytailed...

This Cobra Kai article contains spoilers for season 5.
When it comes to the original Karate Kid films, The Karate Kid Part III is unquestionably the worst installment of the trilogy. Part I launched the franchise. Part II took it to Okinawa. Part III nearly killed it. Even Daniel-san himself, Ralph Macchio, rejected the film.
“I was not a fan of how the Karate Kid III came out,” Macchio said to The Hollywood Reporter last January. “I felt the story was only repeating itself and was not character forwarding for the end of Larusso.”
Macchio went on to say it wasn’t a smooth ride for him and that there were parts of the character he didn’t embrace. “I don’t put it on the top of my résumé.”
Is Macchio (and mostly everyone else’s) estimation of Karate Kid III a fair one? And if so, is there any...

Mr. Miyagi is one of cinema's most memorable mentors. Played by the inimitable Pat Morita, Miyagi is known for his nontraditional approach to teaching karate and for doling out wise life advice when it's needed most. He is the heart of "The Karate Kid" franchise, and Morita, who passed away in 2005, has inspired many of us with his portrayal of everyone's favorite sensei. With the announcement of the spin-off show "Cobra Kai," fans of the original series wondered how Miyagi's influence (and absence) would tie into the new story. Thankfully, the show's creators share a deep love and respect for this crucial character, and they have gone to great lengths to insure that Miyagi's influence and spirit is still felt throughout all five seasons of "Cobra Kai."

Major spoilers ahead for "Cobra Kai" season 5.
Since Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) first appeared in "Cobra Kai," he's been a thorn in Daniel Larusso's (Ralph Macchio) side. We first met the character back in the 1989 film "The Karate Kid Part III," where we learned that he helped John Kreese (Martin Kove) start the Cobra Kai dojo. They had been old buddies back in the Vietnam War, and Silver — a very wealthy dumper of toxic waste — tries to help Kreese get the dojo up and running after Daniel and Mr. Miyagi (the late Noriyuki "Pat" Morita) humiliated them at the All-Valley tournament.
He poses as a friend, manipulates Daniel's training and relationships, and leads him down the path to anger. In "Cobra Kai," he uses every ruthless method he can to ruin Daniel and Johnny (William Zabka) and their dojos. In season 5, he finally gets his comeuppance. It's the first...

When Xolo Maridueña first stepped into the Blue Beetle suit, there were “a lot of nerves and exhilaration” that came with embodying the DC superhero.
“Excited is not the first word that comes to my brain,” Maridueña told Variety at the Season 5 red carpet premiere of “Cobra Kai” on Wednesday night. “It is nervous excitement, it’s antsiness. It’s the anticipation of knowing that you’re on the brink of something potentially big, but it still feels really intimate because you’re just with the cast and the crew.”
The 21-year-old actor will be portraying the lead role of Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle in DC’s first adaptation of a comic led by a Latino superhero. “I can’t wait for people to see one of the — if not the first — Latino-led superhero movies ever,” he continued.
Last month, it was revealed that Warner Bros. had scrapped plans entirely to release “Batgirl.

In 2016, Paul Feig reimagined the beloved "Ghostbusters" franchise for a new generation and made the daring decision to cast Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, and Leslie Jones as our proton-pack-wearing heroes. The response from "fans" was scarier than any ghost worth bustin'. People review bombed the film before it ever debuted and the official "Ghostbusters" Ultimate Gift Set omitted the film from its collection until I complained so loudly about it, Feig noticed and threw in his two cents, and then magically a digital copy was announced to be included.
The unbridled vitriol spewed from toxic fanboys regarding 2016's "Ghostbusters" felt unprecedented, with many viewing it as a look into the future of what happens when "boy franchises" dare to shift focus and let girls take center stage. Except, "Ghostbusters" wasn't the first time this had happened. More than two decades prior, "The Karate Kid" franchise decided to give Mr.

The first bit of marketing for Ryan Murphy’s limited series The Watcher is a teaser in the truest sense of the word. It’s also a choice.
Instead of a traditional trailer, Netflix offers a three-minute “open house” hosted by realtor Karen Calhoun (played by The White Lotus‘ Jennifer Coolidge). The bit is played almost entirely straight… except for a couple of peculiar moments that point to something far more sinister. Take, for instance, when Karen suggests that you can fit an entire human inside the house’s dumbwaiter. Or when she refuses to open the bedroom curtains to...

Spoilers for "Cobra Kai" season 5.
In the Netflix series "Cobra Kai," Thomas Ian Griffith plays the villain Terry Silver, a role he originated in "The Karate Kid Part III." That film is usually considered very low in the rankings of "Karate Kid" entries. While that may be true, Silver in his current form is a baddie we love to hate.
Terry Silver was a Vietnam War buddy of John Kreese (Martin Kove). The martial artist helped Kreese create the Cobra Kai dojo, but he was also a wealthy businessman whose job it was to dump toxic waste in the third film. His company was called Dynatox, if that helps you get a sense of the level of camp we're dealing with here. Silver did business from his hot tub and faked his way into Daniel Larusso's (Ralph Macchio) life. He pretended to be a sensei, but was really working for Kreese the entire time.

Mild spoilers for "Cobra Kai" season 5 ahead.
The Netflix series "Cobra Kai" is showing no mercy to those of us who love the "Karate Kid" franchise. Not only have we been able to catch up with Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) from 1984's "The Karate Kid," but we've got cameos galore from the subsequent offerings. Cobra Kai sensei Kreese (Martin Kove) is back, along with Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) and Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita) from the second film, Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) and Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan) from the third, and a few more we won't spoil here.
It's a nostalgia bomb in all the best ways, and it's made a lot of us do a film marathon, if only to make sure we recognize all the "Cobra Kai" cameos before they show us flashbacks.

Daniel Larusso is no stranger to romance. In "The Karate Kid," his crush on Johnny Lawrence's (William Zabka) girlfriend Ali Mills (Elizabeth Shue) is what gets him into trouble in the first place. Determined to win her heart and give Johnny a beating in the process (Johnny sympathizer over here!), Daniel sets out to master the art of karate, which is a pretty crazy and impressive thing to do for love. Because this is Hollywood, he ends up getting the girl and the first place trophy, but by "The Karate Kid Part II," he and Ali have parted ways.
Clearly not too heartbroken over the breakup, Daniel embarks on a journey to Okinawa with Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) where he meets Yukie, Miyagi's former crush, and her charming niece Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita). He then spends the rest of the film trying to win over Kumiko's heart with his sick karate moves and American charm.

Fans of director John G. Dressed in his old army uniform, he toasts to a photograph of his late wife and shows a picture of her to Daniel (Ralph Macchio) who is just now learning of his sensei's complicated past.
Born in Okinawa, 18-year-old Miyagi immigrated to the United States after he unsuccessfully professed his love to Yukie, the woman who was arranged to marry his best friend, Sato. He met his wife in Hawaii while working in the cane fields, but their romance was quickly complicated by the United States' decision to enter World War II.
