The Spanish-language coming of age tale, whose original title is La Hija de Todas Las Rabias, follows a young girl growing up on a vast garbage dump in Nicaragua.

Mexico’s Martfilms, Guatemala’s Cine Concepción and Norway’s Merfilm have boarded Aeden O’Connor Agurcia’s Honduran immigration drama “Cae el sol” (“Sun Falls”), produced by Ana Isabel Martins Palacios at Pulsar Cine.
One of the 15 projects presented as part of Ventana Sur 2022’s Proyecta initiative, “Cae el sol” also counts on a local co-production involvement by Fosforito Films in Honduras and investment from U.S. company Amé Films.
Writer-director O’Connor Agurcia’s feature debut, “90 minutes,” won the Audience Award at the 2020 Miami International Film Festival.
In development, “Cae el sol’s” producers plan to go into production on the film by the end of next year or early 2024.
The story is set in 2018 Honduras, focusing on a group of young filmmakers overcoming their context by becoming storytellers.

Variety sat down with TorinoFilmLab’s managing director, Mercedes Fernandez Alonso, to talk through this year’s rich program of industry initiatives and its commitment to support new and established creative talents through Tfl Italia and Tfl Meeting.
“Tfl Italia aims to create a bridge between Italian and international professionals. […] This year, we are offering two main programs. The Alpi Film Lab focuses on Italian-French co-productions wherein, thorough several workshop held throughout the year, the participating teams could draft their co-production plans for their projects. We’ve put together each Italian project with a French producer, as well as the other way around. Last year, six projects out of eight became real co-productions,” explained Fernandez Alonzo.
“Meanwhile, Up & Coming Italia is open to Italian producers who want to take their first steps in the field of international co-productions. In these days, they worked with us and met with experts,” she added.

250 industry execs set to attend market this week.
The TorinoFilmLab (Tfl) kicks off the 15th edition of its international co-production market Tfl Meeting Event this week, showcasing 30 feature film projects between November 24-26.
Tfl Meeting Event will present 20 titles that have taken part in Tfl’s nine-month scriptwriting programme ScriptLab, comprising 14 debut scripts, two sophomore titles and four mature projects. Each participant has been guided on the development of their scripts through five online and residential workshops. The ScriptLab titles were revealed in March.
Another 10 projects will be presented from Tfl’s FeatureLab strand for films at a more advanced stage.

The Torino Film Festival, which celebrates its 40th edition this year, will open with a special musical and visual event focusing on two of the most iconic British bands – the Beatles and the Rolling Stones – and their love for cinema, which led them to work with the likes of Richard Lester, Jean-Luc Godard, Jonas Mekas, Wim Wenders and Martin Scorsese.
The 70-minute event, set to be held at the prestigious Teatro Regio on Nov. 25 and broadcast by Rai Radio3, will feature “both rare and never-before-seen archive footage.”

Spanish fest has more Latin American films and projects than ever before.
This year’s San Sebastian InternationaI Film Festival has the highest number of Latin American films across its official selection and marketplaces than ever before, according to festival director José Luis Rebordinos.
The line-up includes three titles in official selection: two from Argentinian directors - Manuel Abramovich’s Pornomelancolia and Diego Lerman’s The Substitute – and The Wonder from Chilean director Sebastian Lelio.
“It’s a very good moment for Latin America cinema for both quantity and the high quality of the proposals,” says Rebordinos.

On the heels of a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and ahead of its bow in New Directors competition at San Sebastian, Bff, who heads international sales, has given Variety exclusive access to the trailer for Nicaraguan director Laura Baumeister’s debut feature, “Daughter of Rage.”
The film follows 11-year-old María and her mother, Lilibeth, who navigate poverty by collecting and repurposing refuse from the local landfill. A look at stifling generational debt passed on in communities that work hard to stay afloat, the film also tackles precocious familial bonds, abandonment, and the salvation of an imagination that allows the protagonist to cope with uncertainty.

It seems entirely appropriate that the fantastical should meet the harsh realities of everyday life in the mind of a child in Laura Baumeister’s debut fiction feature. Life is tough for 11-year-old Maria (Ara Alejandra Medal), who spends her days scavenging at Nicaragua’s La Chureca landfill. The acres of rubbish we see her picking her way through in the film’s opening scenes look post-Apocalyptic and are in stark contrast to some of the unspoilt natural landscapes of the country that we’ll see later - but this is no fantasy unfortunately, but rather the crushing daily life for many.
Maria lives with her mother Lillibeth (Virginia Sevilla), whose own personality seems to be created from the energy of oppositional forces. On the one hand is her fierce love for Maria but it's coupled with a no-nonsense attitude driven as much by a desire to ensure her little girl is tough enough to.

The Castle follows a mother and daughter in their final months living together in an inherited, but rundown, mansion. Benchimol, with co-director Pablo Aparo, won best mid-length documentary at IDFA in 2017 with The Dread.

“I couldn’t have hoped for a more appropriate opening night film than Weird: The Al Yankovic Story — a beautifully deranged biopic made in the great Midnight movie tradition of challenging conventions and forging one’s own path, no matter how weird,” Midnight Madness curator Peter Kuplowsky said in a statement Thursday.
The latest additions to the Toronto Film Festival also include the lineups for the Discovery and Wavelengths programs unveiled Thursday.

The Toronto Film Festival’s Midnight Madness sidebar will open with Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, with Daniel Radcliffe playing the prolific musician behind humorous songs like “Eat It” and “Amish Paradise.”

Last week we got the first set of titles that will (for the most part) premiere at the 2022 San Sebastián International Film Festival. Earlier today, the Donostia folks lassoed thirteen films for their New Directors section. They include projects that we’ve been keeping an eye out on for a good stretch including Laura Baumeister‘s Daughter of Rage – a social issue drama that has taken its sweet time in post (there might be some Efx elements). We also find Dinara Drukarova‘s Le Grand Marin – which was co-wrote with Raphaëlle Desplechin and sees Drukarova, Dylan Robert, Antonythasan Jesuthasan and Sam Louwyck in the book to film project set in Iceland.…...
