In a milestone move, Sony Pictures Television has unveiled “La Academia,” its first Spanish-language scripted series filmed in Spain for Prime Video and 3Cat.
“La Academia” is produced for Sony by Brutal Media, commissioned out of Sony Pictures Television’s international production group. Spt is distributing the series worldwide.
A scripted young adult drama series which Spt describes as being set in the high-pressure, high-drama world of elite youth soccer and its rising stars, ‘La Academia’ takes place at the Spanish training centre of the Apolo F.C., one of the best professional soccer clubs in the world.
There boys and girls from different social backgrounds fight for a shared dream which will inevitably create fiction between them: to make the first team and become the world’s next top players.

A European TV project will soon be on the same quality level as American but for half the cost, predicted Mediawan and Sony execs today.
As the TV world gets set to emerge from the dual U.S. labor strikes, Mediawan CEO Elisabeth D’Arvieu said European production now has a “big competitive advantage” over America, pointing to tax credits across the continent during a panel at the Mia Market.
“We have a very favorable environment in terms of cost in places like Spain, Italy, Greece and Belgium,” she added. “The combination of a very cost-effective system and pool of talent is an incredible competitive advantage for European studios such as ours.”
Brendan Fitzgerald, Sony Pictures Television’s SVP International Co-Productions in Spain, pointed to shows from Sony labels Bad Wolf, Left Bank and Eleven shooting in Cee and Greece, which “work well in terms of location, crew, talent and tax credit.

Sony Pictures Television has raided Red Production Company for Michaela Fereday, the head of production and executive producer on shows including HBO Max and Channel 4’s critically adored AIDS crisis drama It’s A Sin.
Fereday will become Sony’s SVP of scripted production next week, overseeing series made by Sony Pictures Television International Production, rather than those produced by its network of production companies. She will also be responsible for the physical production of Sony’s U.S. and global shows in the UK and Europe.
Fereday reports to Brendan Fitzgerald, SVP of international co-productions, and will work closely with the international scripted teams in Los Angeles, London, and Madrid. During her decade-long tenure at Red, she worked on series including Netflix’s The Stranger, BBC One’s Years & Years, and BBC One’s Happy Valley.
“Michaela’s credits read like a rollcall of the UK’s most popular dramas of the past decade.

“The Oxy Kingpins” is a documentary that feels like it could be a Martin Scorsese movie. It’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” meets “The Insider” — the story of a scurrilous illegal business, and one of the hotshot thrill junkies who rode it to riches, and how that business connects up to a much larger corporate racket. The big players, in this case, are the pharmaceutical distribution companies that dumped opioids onto the market, addicting countless people to OxyContin, a narcotic painkiller that’s really heroin with a “medical” image brand. The thrill junkie is Alex Dimattio, a drug dealer who grew up in New York City, where he dealt weed in Washington Square Park and heroin on the Lower East Side, only to discover that he could make a killing (with a lot less risk) by selling OxyContin pills.
You may think that you already know the ins and outs of the opioid crisis.
