Image Entertainment announced today its acquisition of domestic distribution rights to Jennifer Hudson-starrer "Winnie Mandela", the biopic focusing on the wife of South African President Nelson Mandela that debuted at the Toronto Film Festival last fall after much delay. Based on the book by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob, the film adaptation was written and directed by Darrell Roodt ("Yesterday"). Terrence Howard plays Mr. Mandela, and the film is scheduled for a fall 2013 release. Hudson has garnered only a handful of unenviable roles since her Oscar win for "Dreamgirls" in 2006, most recently on the axed TV series, "Smash." "Winnie Mandela" could mark a return to winning ways for the former American Idol, who also lends her voice to a song by Diane Warren for the film. Though a tepid response out of Toronto (Winnie Mandela herself has also spoken out against it).

Winnie Mandela-centered biopic, Winnie, premiered way back at the 2011 Tiff and is still without an American distributor, so if and when it will find a stateside premiere is still in question.
Directed by Darrell J. Roodt, starring Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson as Winnie Mandela and Terence Howard as Nelson Mandela, the film is based on the biography by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob.
Adapted by Roodt and Andre Pieterse, the film tells the life story of Winnie Mandela tracing her life from her childhood to her experience after her husband was put in prison.
This historical biopic will be hitting theaters in Canada next month (October 5th) and now a new trailer has premiered online to promote the release.

The film also stars Wendy Crewson and Elias Koteas.

After premiering over a year ago at the Toronto International Film Festival to mediocre reviews, Winnie, starring Terrence Howard and Jennifer Hudson, will finally reach theaters this fall.
The biopic tells the story of Winnie Mandela (Hudson), wife of iconic South African political figure Nelson Mandela (Howard). Based on the biography written by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob, the story appears to be pretty much your average tale where public figures are involved.
The production doesn’t take any particular strong stance on the events in question either, which I can only imagine leads to a tolerable film at best, but the trailer does present what looks like a beautifully shot project.
This is the latest film released on the Mandela family, the last being Invictus which came out in 2009 and starred Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon.
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.

This syrupy biography of the former wife of Nelson Mandela seeks to sugar-coat South Africa's complex history
It was designed to be the last great hurrah, a grand finale to an epic year at the Toronto: a powerful tale of racial struggle that would prove the icing on the cake at the North American equivalent of Cannes.
And yet, as Friday night fast approached, with a buoyant mood prevailing, and industry attendance up 20%, cracks mysteriously began to appear. Jennifer Hudson had mysteriously double-booked her schedule, we were told, and would not be attending the world premiere of Winnie: Darrell Roodt's long-awaited biopic of the former wife of Nelson Mandela, and Hudson's grand return to the big screen following the brutal murders of her mother, brother and nephew in 2008.
To add to the mystery, the festival's co-director, Cameron Bailey, delivered his final video blog of festival picks that morning.

Terrence Howard is set to play Nelson Mandela in Darrell J. Roodt's "Winnie" for Equinoxe Films reports BT Vision.
Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob's biography is being used for as the basis for the biopic which covers both the good and bad about Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the former wife of the first black president of South Africa.
Unlike her ex-husband who has become universally deified, Winnie is a more complex figure. A controversial activist who was a key component in the anti-apartheid struggle, she later fell out of favor due to her hardline approach and later was convicted of charges in relation to the torture and murder of a 14-year old police informer by one of her bodyguards.
Jennifer Hudson ("Dreamgirls") is set to play Winnie. Darrell J. Roodt ("Cry The Beloved Country," "Sarafina") directs from a script he co-wrote with Andre Pieterse and Paul L. Johnson.
