Italy’s Mediaset Distribution is having a busy virtual MipTV with interest surging – possibly due to the coronavirus pandemic – for its religious titles such as “Karol: a Man Who Became Pope,” while also scoring brisk sales with fresher shows.
Working via video meetings from her home in Milan, which has been hard hit by the pandemic, sales manager Claudia Marra is seeing a burst of demand, especially from Poland and Spain, for the company’s Catholicism-themed library shows.
Spain’s 13Tv has snapped up “Karol,” which is about Pope John Paul II, and also mini-series “Fatima” and “Teaching the future, the real story of Maria Montessori,” about the Italian pedagogical reformer.
As for its lineup of more current shows, Mediaset has sold thriller “The Silence of Water” to French public broadcaster France Televisions, Armenia Public TV and Georgia’s Adzhara TV.

Filmmaker Alma Har’el helped conceive Time’s 100 Women of the Year issue, designed to recognize the contributions of female leaders, innovators, activists, entertainers, athletes and artists who defined the century from 1920 through 2019. Along with original portraits, the magazine will release 100 covers reflecting the era of each year.
“I don’t think Time has ever done anything this big,” “Honey Boy” director Har’el says, speaking exclusively to Variety. “They usually do one of these covers a year. We’re doing 100 of them.”
“If I felt hungry to take solace in some of the histories of some of these women, I immersed myself in it in the most encompassing way I could,” she adds. The idea was born out of Ha’rel’s frustration and a need to “do something that takes me outside of myself.”
Har’el spent much of 2019 on the awards trail discussing “Honey Boy,” a drama written by and starring Shia Labeouf.

The principal at the posh Montessori school in London lost out on landing Tim Burton's son as a student for recommending fairytales aren't healthy for a young mind.
The filmmaker was appalled by the very idea and vowed not to send Billy to the well-respected school.
Burton's wife and muse Helena Bonham Carter says, "Tim has a theory that we impose our own fears on the kids and it's the kids who are quite robust.
"When we were trying to find a nursery school for our son, according to the Montessori method, kids can't tell the difference between reality and fantasy until the age of six.
"The school principal recommended no fairytales, which is why we didn't send Bill to Montessori - because telling Tim Burton that fairytales are not a good idea is a no-no."
A Montessori school is based on the research and experiences of Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori, who urged children to act naturally and learn in a self-directed way.
