Pussy Riot will be the subject of a scripted series from STX Entertainment. Based on the upcoming memoir from ringleader Nadya Tolokonnikova, the untitled show will center around some of the protest art collective’s most notable recent protests — including their “Punk Prayer” and their protest of the Sochi Olympics — as well as their arrests and jail sentence along the way.
Of the series’ premise, Tolokonnikova explains in a statement: “I was a broke 20-year-old artist studying philosophy, he was one of the most powerful, wealthy and dangerous men on Earth. In 2011 I went against him, damn the consequences. After years of imprisonment, harassment, attacks, trauma I am ready to share this story. My dream is to see my country peaceful, democratic and diverse, where gay people are not being stoned to death. Is it too much to ask? Does it make me an extremist?”

Exclusive: We’ve learned that STX Entertainment has reached a deal with Nadya Tolokonnikova, the artist, activist, and creator of the legendary Russian feminist protest art collective Pussy Riot, to develop a limited scripted series based on her forthcoming memoir.
The project was brought to the studio by former President of STX Sophie Watts.
The series represents the first scripted project of Pussy Riot with the full support of the creator of the movement, Nadya Tolokonnikova, with all preceding projects (including Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer and Pussy versus Putin) being documentaries. The project will explore the story of how a young girl from Siberia took on the world’s most powerful dictator – the origins and formation of the art collective; the actions of Nadya and fellow young women against Putin in Moscow; their arrest after the famous “Punk Prayer” action; their trial, conviction, and jail sentence; and the protests...

Watts is expected to help promote Ryff’s tech, which allows for products to be inserted digitally into footage that has already been shot. When it launched in 2014, Stx Entertainment was supposed to be a smarter and nimbler entertainment company, one that could open compelling movies and launch quality television shows while keeping a lid on costs.
Five years later, the upstart studio has little to show for its efforts, and following the box office failure of “UglyDolls,” an animated movie that the company hoped would launch a franchise, its financial and creative future looks perilous. As if to rub salt in the wounds, Stx’s release of “Poms,” a low-budget movie about a cheerleader troupe of senior citizens, has also met with lackluster box office results.
Under the leadership of CEO Robert Simonds and motion picture chair Adam Fogelson, Stx has repeated the same refrain for years — that the company mitigates its financial risk by spending less on marketing and by selling off foreign rights to the films it makes. But the “UglyDolls” returns are not pretty.

The Walt Disney Co. has officially laid claim to the top-level executives at Fox that the company wants to keep once it finalizes its $71.3 billion acquisition for the majority of the Murdoch family’s entertainment assets — but Fox film chief Stacey Snider won’t be making the move.
That puts Snider, a well-liked and respected executive who has had stints running Universal Pictures, DreamWorks and currently 20th Century Fox, in play at a time when Hollywood is craving experienced leadership.
“Literally I’d be outside the lot right now with a lobster bib on,” Redef CEO Jason Hirschhorn said at this month’s TheWrap-sponsored media and entertainment conference TheGrill.

Stx Entertainment filed initial paperwork for an Ipo with the Hong Kong stock exchange on Thursday.
The move would further cement ties to the Chinese market for the studio under CEO Robert Simonds.
Stx is expected to raise about $500 million through the Ipo, which could happen before the end of 2018 depending on regulatory approval, the L.A. Times reported.

A spokesperson for Stx did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
The studio, founded in 2014 to be a leaner movie and TV production house focused on mid-budget features, currently has Amy Schumer’s “I Feel Pretty” in theaters.
It already has strong ties with China, having Hony Capital, Tencent and Hong Kong telecom conglomerate Pccw among its investors.

Stx also deliberately develops projects to appeal to Chinese audiences, such as last year’s “The Foreigner,” starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, which grossed over $145 million worldwide.
The studio’s biggest domestic hit was the 2016 R-rated comedy “Bad Moms,” which grossed $113 million domestically. But the company has struggled at the box office in the last year, with only last year’s “A Bad Mom’s Christmas” hitting $72 million.
According to the Times, the company stated in its 500-plus-page filing that it plans to focus on mid-budget movies ($20-$80 million), which the major Hollywood studios generally overlook in favor of tentpole blockbusters.
Stx Entertainment president Sophie Watts recently left her role at the company after complaining of harassment by her boss, Simonds, according to multiple Stx insiders at the time.

Sylvester Stallone has lined up a feature with Stx Entertainment, the studio announced during its CinemaCon presentation on Tuesday.
Neither party would officially reveal anything about the project, although Screendaily understands Lawrence Grey will produce through Grey Matter Productions.
Stx sources confirmed to Screendaily that the project is not the mob film Scarpa, which Stallone has been shopping around.
“I’ve joined their family,” Stallone told attendees at the Colosseum. “We have an incredible film coming up. I’m not going to give you the name right now because I don’t want you to all go crazy.”
The appearance of Stallone, who thanked attendees for their support of 2015 hit Creed, was one of several high-profile talent to take the stage in a pure statement of intent by Bob Simonds’ fledgling studio.
