Back in the 1960s, "Star Trek" was a generally positive view of humanity, and the time-traveling alien of the BBC's "Doctor Who" has always had a soft spot in his hearts for the people of Earth.
But a large percentage of sci-fi visions of the future are dark ones, apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic, positing a world destroyed by pollution, overpopulation, asteroid strike, plague, rampant technology, zombie invasion or "Sharknado" -- take your pick.
That's not what series creator J.H. Wyman (aka Joel) wants you to see in his new sci-fi drama "Almost Human," airing Mondays on Fox. He shares executive-producer credit with J.J. Abrams (with whom Wyman worked on "Fringe") and Bryan Burk ("Lost").
"I'm always writing about the same thing," he says, leaning forward towards Zap2it in his chair at a Beverly Hills hotel bar, "which is, life is valued by the connections that you make. I believe in...

"Almost Human" does one of the hardest things on TV: make a futuristic, science-fiction world seem relevant and familiar to audiences. It helps that the show is, at its heart a buddy-cop story.
The fact that one of the buddies is a robot only serves to give "Almost Human" a new feel in a couple of old genres.
Things change but crime stays the same
In the future, police officers are partnered with androids, typically called "synthetics" in "Almost Human." The synthetics are incredibly useful in the field, combining fighting abilities with perfect data recording and direct links to computer networks.
They're also emotionless and bound entirely by logic.
For Detective John Kennix (Karl Urban), the synthetics are nothing but a pain in his injured leg. Returning to the force after an extended medical leave, Kennix can't work well with a synthetic until he is partnered with Dorian (Michael Ealy...

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.

On Monday Fox unveiled their primetime slate for the 2013-2014 television season to the national advertising community during its annual Programming Presentation at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The network announced 5 new comedies, 4 new dramas, a first event series, and an animated comedy from Seth MacFarlane.
Some of today’s most inventive directors working in film have smoothly segued from motion pictures to series TV and their new shows have found a home at Fox. What caught my attention were the sci-fi, fantasy shows bearing the names of Abrams, Shyamalan, Kurtzman and Orci.
Among the network’s lineup is M. Night Shyamalan’s new event series Wayward Pines. Set to premiere in 2014 and based on the best-selling novel, “Pines,” by Blake Crouch, Wayward Pines is an intense, mind-bending thriller in which nothing is what it seems. Also on the Fox schedule is the...

Human takes place in the not-to-distant future where Los Angeles cops are paired with human-like androids. What follows below is a breakdown of who has been cast so far. Karl Urban: Cast in the lead role of John Kennex, described as a respected police officer who has shut down emotionally after a tragic mission that claimed the lives of nine of his fellow elite officers and left him critically injured. Urban, of course, also plays Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in Jj Abrams' movieverse of Star Trek. Michael Ealy: Portraying Kennex's android partner Dorian, who understands humanity more than Kennex does. MacKenzie Crook: He's playing Rudy Lom, architect behind the Lapd's robotics squad. The buddy cop show, from Warner Bros. TV, is set in the near future when all Lapd officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. It centers on one such pairing, cop John Kennex and his android partner Dorian (Michael Ealy). Irby, repped by Greene & Assoc. and Leanne Coronel, plays top Lapd Detective Richard Paul who blames Kennex for the death of fellow officers in the tragic mission that casts a pall over the department.
