Over the last several years, filmmaker Mike Flanagan has quickly established himself as one of the best and most assured genre storytellers of the last decade. From Absentia to Oculus to Hush, as well as Ouija: Origin of Evil and Before I Wake (which this writer is still patiently waiting for a Stateside release), Flanagan has a proven track record as a confident director, and his latest project, Gerald’s Game, is another example of his ability to tell uniquely compelling stories in a way that only he can.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Flanagan about his experiences adapting the acclaimed Stephen King novel for Netflix, the challenges he faced with both the material as well as keeping his mostly single location story intriguing on a visual level. Flanagan also chatted about collaborating with “force of nature” Carla Gugino for Gerald’s Game and how she...

Mike Flanagan has been on a pretty successful run when it comes to horrors. With Absentia, Oculus, Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil, it is fair to say he has brought us well made horror that actually delivers. Now that Gerald’s Game has arrived on Netflix, can he continue his success.
Gerald’s Game is the story of Jessie Birlingame (Carla Gugino) who agrees to go on a retreat with her husband Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) to find the spark in her marriage. Letting him handcuff her to the bed to spice up their love life, things go horribly wrong when he dies of a heart attack, leaving Jessie trapped with her own mental demons, along with what lurks in the shadows of the seemingly empty house.

Jeff Howard has been director Mike Flanagan’s screenwriting partner since 2013. Actually, that’s just their first produced film, Oculus. They go back even further. So when Flanagan wanted to adapt Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game, Howard helped him realize his vision. The Netflix original film is based on King’s 1992 novel in which Jessie (Carla Gugino) […]

Following up the visceral intensity of Hush and the creepy scares of Ouija: Origin of Evil is no easy task, but Mike Flanagan looks to do just that with his adaptation of Stephen King's Gerald's Game (which, as readers know, is not one of the easiest King stories to adapt for the screen). With the movie premiering on Netflix later this month, the official one-sheet for Gerald's Game has now been revealed... and may have you stretching your arms and rubbing your wrists.
The poster was revealed by Stephen King and Mike Flanagan on Twitter. Directed by Flanagan from a screenplay he wrote with Jeff Howard (based on Stephen King's 1992 novel), Gerald's Game stars Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, and Chiara Aurelia. Gerald's Game will premiere on Netflix beginning September 29th.

"If you don't wake up, you're going to die." Based on Stephen King's novel of the same name (one of his most unsettling stories), Mike Flanagan's (Hush) latest film, Gerald's Game, is teased in a new trailer ahead of its September 29th premiere on Netflix.
Directed by Mike Flanagan from a screenplay he wrote with Jeff Howard (based on Stephen King's 1992 novel), Gerald's Game stars Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, and Chiara Aurelia.
"Gerald’s Game follows Gerald and Jessie Burlingame, who have gone to their summer home on a warm weekday in October for a romantic interlude. After being handcuffed to her bedposts, Jessie tires of her husband's games, until things take an unexpectedly tragic turn. Still handcuffed, she is trapped and alone. Painful memories from her childhood bedevil her. Her only company is a hungry stray dog and the voices that populate her mind. As night comes,...

Carla Gugino has starred in a ton of film throughout her career, and she's had some pretty incredible roles. According to her, her part in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's Gerald's Game is her most fulfilling role yet.
The story is a suspense thriller in which Gugino plays a woman who is left handcuffed to a bed in an isolated cabin after her husband dies abruptly during sex play. As she is trapped alone and trying to escape, "painful memories from her childhood bedevil her. Her only company is a hungry stray dog and the voices that populate her mind. As night comes, she is unsure whether it is her imagination or if she has another companion: someone watching her from the corner of her dark bedroom."

Chicago – Like many of the creatures or villains it inspires, the horror genre has been slowly decaying for years now. In a time of reboots and tired sequels, 2016 has shown us glimpses of future promise by revisiting elements of the past. Flanagan continues this hot streak, one he helped create with “Hush” earlier this year, with the prequel “Ouija: Origin of Evil”.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Mike Flanagan is slowly becoming a welcome force in the horror genre. He grabbed our attention with the visual mindfuck that is “Oculus”. His visual style is an art form all its own. Done in an almost Del Toro style, Flanagan loves playing with form and tone in an unconventional way. He finds the beauty in the darkness, the humor in the horror, and the humanity in the inhumane. Aside from successfully recreating the aesthetic of the 60’s in “Ouija: Origin of Evil”, he also channels that...

As a teen, I read some Stephen King books. Hell, I think either my mom or I joined The Stephen King Library if you fiends remember that. If you don’t remember that, how’s this ad to jog your memory:
What I do remember is when this book came out, it was maybe a bit more adult than I was wanting. Keep in mind, it came out when I was 11. However, I’ve been on a kick recently to try and read more and I’m beginning with King’s catalog as I got to the point where I just collected his work versus actually reading the novels and collections. Maybe I can crank this one out before the film adaptation gets released next year via Netflix. The production started principal photography in Alabama yesterday. Want more info, read on…

Don’t be afraid, familiarity with Stiles White’s 2014 horror offering “Ouija” isn’t required to enjoy Mike Flanagan’s inventive and often flat-out horrifying prequel, “Ouija: Origin of Evil.” While Flanagan, who previously helmed the chiller “Oculus” and the well-received festival hit “Hush,” builds in some necessary links between the two films, his “Ouija” happily exists as its own standalone feature — albeit one kitted out with a seemingly never-ending slew of nods to the rest of the genre.
Flanagan and co-writer Jeff Howard wear their influences on their sleeves, offering up a veritable cornucopia of horror tricks and tropes that mostly succeed on their own, and “Ouija” giddily zips between haunted house thriller, exorcism drama and skillful period piece, all wrapped up in a neat and terrifying little bow.

Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood have been tapped to star in Netflix’s film adaptation of Gerald’s Game, the 1992 bestselling novel from Stephen King. Development of the series started way back in 2014, and, as with most King adaptations, the project floated around development purgatory for a while before finally moving forward. Now, though, with Gugino and Greenwood locked in, it’s safe to say Gerald’s Game is really happening. Hush and Oculus director Mike Flanagan will direct from a script he co-wrote with Oculus collaborator Jeff Howard.
Gerald’s Game follows Gerald (Greenwood) and Jessie Burlingame (Gugino), who decide to spend their weekend getaway at their summer home by playing elaborate adult games. Stephen King's 1992 novel Gerald's Game is one of the author's more unconventionally creepy novels, and bringing it to life onscreen could be one of the more intriguingly challenging adaptations for a filmmaker. Director Mike Flanagan chats to us about making a sequel to Ouija, and those Halloween rumours...
Many horror fans were unsurprised but unattracted by the prospect of a sequel to Ouija... until it was announced who would be writing and directing. Mike Flanagan has very quickly become a bit of a star in the horror world, and deservedly so. His films are brilliantly well-made, his ideas are complex, and he's got great storytelling instincts.
And, for what it's worth, his Ouija sequel is actually a prequel, being set in the late 60s. But it's not just your typical period piece where a setting in time is evoked through costume, production design, music and, if you're lucky, the cinematography. Flanagan took one wild step beyond with his movie, and I started by asking him about this when we talked last week.
Tell me if I'm mad. I saw this film digitally but.

Universal Pictures is known for its monster collection and it just nabbed Stephen King’s son and threw him in the vault with Dracula and Frankenstein. That's because the studio is developing a feature film based on Joe Hill’s yet-to-be-published novella Snapshot 1988.
Snapshot 88 is being compared with the Netflix TV series Stranger Things, which paid homage to the Stephen King’s 80s books. King’s son chose to write under the pen name Joe Hill to hide his connection to his horror icon dad and make it on his own. This is actually a kind of family tradition, as King wrote under the name Richard Bachman just to see if people would like his books without his too-famous name. They did.

Universal is about to start sending even more horror films our way, this time courtesy of author Joe Hill. According to THR, Universal has grabbed the rights to Hill’s novella Snapshot 1988, a recently released horror story about a boy who takes care of his apparently demented elderly housekeeper. What’s more, director Mike Flanagan, of Ouija 2: Origin of Evil, and his writing partner Jeff Howard are in talks to write the script.
Snapshot 1988 tells the story of a 13 year old boy who begins taking care of an elderly housekeeper, whom he thinks is in the stages of dementia. But her memories are actually being stolen by a man called The Phoenician, who collects people’s memories using a camera. The novella has already sparked comparisons with the Netflix TV series Stranger Things, so we can bet that a film version will take us even deeper into the world of 1980s nostalgia.

If things had gone as promised, you’d be able to see “Before I Wake,” a fantasy/horror film by rising genre talent Mike Flanagan, in theaters this weekend. But just a few weeks ago, Relativity Media, which has been plagued by financial difficulties over the last couple of years, bumped it out of its release berth today—the fourth announced debut come and gone for the film. September 9 had seemed to be the most solid date yet, with posters and trailers touting the release, but then came the latest disappointment (appropriately enough, Relativity slotted “The Disappointments Room” in its place). For those who admired Flanagan’s previous films, including “Absentia,” “Oculus” and “Hush” (the latter actually shot after “Wake”), it has been a distressing series of events, though not nearly as much as it has been for Flanagan himself.

Come October 21, Universal Pictures will unleash a whole new breed of terror with the release of horror sequel, Ouija: Origin of Evil.
Tapping into the breakout success of the 2014 sleeper hit, the studio has brought together director Mike Flanagan and screenwriter Jeff Howard (Oculus and Before I Wake) to hash out a script for Origin of Evil, which tees up a scenario in which a widowed mother and her two daughters toss caution and common sense to the wind by inviting malevolent spirits into their home. It’s all part of a devious scam that unsurprisingly takes a turn for the worst before long, leading to the youngest daughter falling prey to demonic possession.
Set against the Los Angeles of 1965, Ouija: Origin of Evil may not boast the clout of, say, fellow Blumhouse series Insidious, but there’s certainly a niche out there that Universal will hope to appease in two months’ time.
"That little boys dreams come true... But his nightmares, they're deadly." Relativity Studios has released a brand new second trailer for the nightmare horror thriller Before I Wake, featuring Kate Bosworth, Jacob Tremblay (from Room), and Thomas Jane. Some may recall this film was originally supposed to be out last year, with an initial release date set for May of 2015, before the film got delayed indefinitely and rescheduled for this year due to Relativity's bankruptcy. We featured a trailer last year but this new trailer is designed to sell the more horrific side of it. There are some cool moments in this trailer, especially the shot with the glowing butterflies, and the creepy shots near the end, but I'm not sure if the film will be any good. Here's the second trailer (+ poster) for Mike Flanagan's Before I Wake, direct from YouTube: Before I Wake is directed by Mike Flanagan,...

Let’s face it, Ouija was pretty much worthless. It was forgettable and a wasted opportunity. The end product was definitely the result of too many hands in the pot. However, Universal knows that acquiring the license of using the “Ouija” name is definitely something that should be capitalized upon. It also doesn’t hurt that the first film did well at the box office, probably based off the name. Luckily for horror fans, they got a great director in Mike Flanagan to take a crack at the franchise and judging from the trailer, this should have been the original film.
Ouija: Origin of Evil arrives in theaters October 21st from Universal Pictures. Henry Thomas (Betrayal), Annalise Basso (Oculus), Elizabeth Reaser (“True Detective”), Lulu Wilson (Deliver Us from Evil), Parker Mack (MTV’s “Faking It”), Sam Anderson, Kate Siegel (Demon Legacy), and Doug Jones (Hellboy, “Fear Itself”) star.

Thanks to a healthy $102.5 million worldwide return on a teeny budget, Universal’s board game-based horror Ouija summoned up the chance of a sequel. Annalise Basso is already in the cast for the movie and now Twilight’s Elizabeth Reaser has joined up. Oculus’ Mike Flanagan is directing, working from a script he wrote with regular collaborator Jeff Howard. The plot will find Basso (who worked on Oculus) as a young woman who decides that the Ouija board is the ideal method with which to contact her late father. Had she watched the first movie, she might have figured out that this is a very, very bad idea. No details have been given as to who Reaser is playing, though there’s a good chance she’s the young woman’s mother.Flanagan’s involvement gives us some hope that the sequel will have a little more too it than...

Now we know who's going to be making it, too.
Mike Flanagan, who co-wrote and directed Oculus, is to take charge of Ouija 2. Furthermore, Annalise Basso is to take one of the lead roles in the film, having also worked on Oculus with Flanagan. Jeff Howard is co-writing the script.

Ouija, the teen horror from first-time director Stiles White, may not have spoken to the critics much, but managed to manifest a healthy box-office haul. It beat John Wick to the top of the charts on its opening weekend last October, and managed a worldwide gross just under $100 million. A sequel was inevitable, and while we already knew that the Oculus team of Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard had agreed to proved the screenplay, the news this morning is that Flanagan has also now signed on to direct. And suddenly Ouija 2 is that much more interesting a prospect.Adding further Oculus DNA is Annalise Basso, who played the young Karren Gillan in that film and will take one of Ouija 2's leading roles. The plot will revolve around the same haunted board as the first Ouija, with Basso's character unwisely using it to attempt contact with her recently deceased father.
