The immediate flaw in any attempt to stack the twelve extant Harlan Coben TV thrillers in order of greatness is that none of them are exactly great. Pretty much all of them though, are compulsive viewing and will pull you through a bucking and twisting story at the speed of a beagle on the scent of a nearby sausage. They’re packed with incident and revelations, and are generally performed by a charismatic cast so big that you’ll never quite meet them all, let alone tire of their company. Binge-watches par excellence, each one of these series is precision-designed to be gulped down in very few bites.
As these stories all shop for plot in the same aisle, chances are that if you enjoy one Harlan Coben thriller, you’ll enjoy the others. They’re all filled with cliff-hangers, twists, secret identities, surprise resurrections, flashback wigs, and oh-no-it-was-you-all-along reveals.

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

The film follows a somewhat forgotten Hollywood star who finds herself spending time in a British hospital room with three other women who help her find happiness again after she's diagnosed with cancer. The film stars Andie MacDowell as Julia Roth, joined by Miriam Margolyes, Tom Cullen as the handsome Doctor, Tamsin Greig, Sally Phillips, and David Walliams. My Happy Ending is "a poignant and funny female ensemble comedy about four women laughing in the face of adversity, that packs a strong emotional punch.

BBC One’s latest crime drama, The Gold, tells a story so far-fetched it’s hard to believe it could have really happened.
But the story of how six men accidentally stole more than £27m worth of gold bullion is, in fact, completely true.
The six-part series focuses on the Brink’s-Mat robbery of 1983, and its far-reaching consequences.
You can read about the remarkable true story that inspired the series here.
But which parts of the series are rooted in truth, and which ones are fabricated for the purposes of its story?
Here’s a quick guide to sorting fact from fiction…
The robbery itself is recreated accurately to all historical accounts. The robbers did in fact pour gasoline on the security staff at the Brink’s-Mat depot, and threatened to set them alight if they didn’t provide them access to the vault.
It’s also true that the...

Warning: contains spoilers for The Gold episodes 1 – 6.
In the final moments of BBC drama The Gold, the special taskforce investigators come to a ground-shaking realisation: all this time, they’ve only been chasing half of the swag, £13 million of the £26 million’s worth of bullion stolen in the infamous 1983 Brink’s-Mat bullion robbery. By 1986 they’d put away a handful of villains who committed or profited from the heist, but that was far from the extent of it. “Where do we start?” asks Di Brightwell. “At the beginning,” answers Dci Boyce.
It remains to be seen if The Gold will return to BBC One to tell the rest of the Brink’s-Mat story, but if does, there’s plenty of material. The investigation has continued decades after the event, as the cash was followed into international drug imports, original convictions were spent, and several suspects were killed in gangland executions years later.

How do you tell the story of a heist, when the heist isn’t the story? In 1983, six masked burglars broke into a warehouse on a trading estate near Heathrow. They were looking to crack into a vault, but when the security guards failed to provide a passcode – even when doused in petrol and threatened with a naked flame – attention turned to the glistening stash outside the vault. And this is where the story of The Gold, BBC One’s new six-part retelling of the Brink’s-Mat robbery, begins. This isn’t the story of a heist, but of what happened next.
“How do you shift three tonnes of gold?” asks Charlotte Spencer’s Rotherhithe local copper, Nicki. “Slowly,” replies her partner Tony (Emun Elliott). There are other adverbs he might have chosen: agonisingly, complicatedly, infuriatingly. Instead of the expected million quid in the vault, the team of low-level crooks...

Neil Forsyth’s The Gold is a true crime drama with a distinctive perspective. As much as it’s about the cat-and-mouse chase between the robbers of £26 million’s worth of gold bullion in November 1983, and the special task force trying to catch them, it’s also about the British class system. Over six episodes (airing weekly on BBC One and available as a box-set on BBC iPlayer), Forsyth tells a story about villains on both sides of the social divide and the entrenched systems protecting those at the top. His London is just as veined with establishment corruption, freemasonry and snobbery as it is with armed robbers, hooky fences and locals who keep their mouths shut for fear of reprisal.
The ensemble drama covers the period from the 1983 robbery, then the largest gold heist in British history, to the investigation and sentencing of select ring leaders. The story, as the newspapers show,...

It all began with six men in a van. On the 26 November 1983, half a dozen armed men broke into the Brink’s-Mat depot near London’s Heathrow Airport, where they were expecting to find a million pounds worth of foreign currency.
Instead, they stumbled upon gold bullion worth £26m.
At the time, it was the largest robbery in world history and changed British policing forever.
The case is being dramatised in a new BBC One drama, starring Hugh Bonneville, Jack Lowden, Dominic Cooper, Charlotte Spencer, and Tom Cullen.
Here’s what we know about it…
What happened on 26 November?
At first, it just seemed like “a typical Old Kent Road armed robbery”, in the words of detectives at the time.
The gang, some carrying guns, surprised security staff as they started their Saturday shift between 6.30am and 8.15am at the warehouse.
They gained entry from one of the security guards,...

Exclusive: Jack Lowden, star of forthcoming TV mini-series The Gold, and Apple TV+ hit, Slow Horses, believes that actors should stick to what they know best and to not allow their political opinions to get in the way of their work.
As far as he’s concerned, ”you’re not an actor ” when “you’re sort of political.”
However, it’s crime, not politics, that’s at the center of the rollicking BBC One and Paramount+ six-part real-life heist thriller The Gold. The show is inspired by the imfafous Brinks Mat gold robbery of 1983 — on of Britain’s most storied crimes ever.

The glut of shows being pulled from streaming services continues.
Starz has pulled a trio of titles – Dangerous Liaisons, Becoming Elizabeth and Step Up from its streaming service. All three titles have been canceled but it’s another example of a company taking finished shows off their own service.
It comes after HBO Max pulled series such as Westworld, The Nevers, Raised By Wolves, The Time Traveler’s Wife as well as a slew of reality shows including FBoy Island and a raft of animated titles from its service last year.
Over the weekend, HBO Max also pulled a number of episodes of the original Looney Tunes, including seasons 16 to 31, as well as three seasons of The Flintstones. These shows were removed after their licenses expired.
The strategy at Warner Bros. Discovery was in part formed by tax write offs that it could gain after the merger, as well as interest...

The Tudor dynasty is the TV gift that just keeps on giving. Ever since the breakout hit of Showtime's 2007 period drama "The Tudors," many a network has followed in their footsteps by sinking some cash into the world of frilled shirts, looming castles, and royal extravagance. The only thing more exciting than the realism and royal schadenfreude of "The Crown" is when you mix political and personal drama, dial up the dramatics and make it extra sexy. Over the years, the result has been a dozen different period dramas taking this approach (hence our post-"Bridgerton" world).
But "Becoming Elizabeth" offered a refreshing change of pace. Though it once again traces the Tudor story through the eyes of Queen Elizabeth I, the series created by Anya Reiss prioritizes Elizabeth's personal experience over the epic history being made in her lifetime.

Queen Elizabeth I's teenage years will no longer be charted at Starz.
Deadline has revealed the premium cabler has canceled the Alicia von Rittberg series after just one season.
The series launched in the U.S. and Starz territories around the globe in June.
Reviews were decent, but Starz hadn't been forthcoming about viewership statistics, which could signal that the interest was not high enough to sustain the series.
Here's the logline:
Long before she ascended the throne, young Elizabeth Tudor, played by Alicia von Rittberg, was an orphaned teenager who became embroiled in the political and sexual politics of the English court.
The death of King Henry VIII sees his nine-year-old son Edward, played by Oliver Zetterström, take the throne and sets into motion a dangerous scramble for power when Elizabeth, Edward and their sister Mary, played by Romola Garai find themselves pawns in a game between the great...

It was a short reign for the Starz royal drama Becoming Elizabeth, as the network has canceled the series after just one season, as reported by Deadline. Created by British playwright Anya Reiss, the historical drama revolved around the teenage years of Queen Elizabeth I (Alicia von Rittberg), who, after the death of Henry VIII, is caught up in a frantic power struggle with her siblings. As her nine-year-old brother Edward ascends to the throne, Elizabeth fights to control her own destiny and take power as the men around her attempt to claim her sovereignty. The cancelation comes after disappointingly low viewing figures for the first season. According to Live+Same Day Nielsen data, the season averaged 136,000 viewers, with the June 12 premiere being the most-watched episode at just 158,000 total viewers. In addition to Rittberg, the show also starred Romola Garai as Mary Tudor, Jessica Raine as Catherine Parr, Tom Cullen as Thomas Seymour,...

Starz has canceled “Becoming Elizabeth,” a historical costume drama series about the Tudors, after one season, an individual with knowledge of the decision told IndieWire.
The show created by Anya Reiss and starring Alicia von Rittberg premiered August 12 but failed to capture much of an audience and posted low ratings that dipped throughout its 8-episode run.
“Becoming Elizabeth” continued Starz’s fascination with the 16th Century Tudor family after finding a hit with 2013’s “The White Queen” and two other spinoff series based on English history. “Becoming Elizabeth” specifically focused on a young Elizabeth I when she was still an orphaned teenager and the death of King Henry VIII set into motion a scramble for power and the throne.
The series also starred Romola Garai, Jessica Raine, Tom Cullen, and Bella Ramsey and was produced by The Forge for Starz. The show was also notable for boasting an all-women writing staff as led by Reiss.

Exclusive: Starz has canceled its freshman drama Becoming Elizabeth, Deadline has confirmed.
According to Live+Same Day Nielsen data, the series failed to capture audiences meaningfully; its premiere August 12 was the most-watched episode but only mustered 158,000 total viewers.
