This is not going to be about Cloverfield (2008). This is not going to be a unifying theory about the Cloverfield monster. It's also not going to be about how this all might perfectly fit into a tidy, expanded universe. Nope. This is going to be about John Goodman. This is going to be about Mary Elizabeth Winstead. It's going to be about director Dan Trachtenberg. It's going to be about how 10 Cloverfield Lane was, quite simply, one of the very best films of 2016, and how it is likely destined to become an underrated classic. But first, let's talk about The Cellar. Originally a spec script written by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken (famously making the coveted Tracking List "hit list" in 2012)...

If you haven't seen "10 Cloverfield Lane," you're missing out on a pretty nifty contained thriller that, while a sideways companion to "Cloverfield," is really a movie all its own. And it's an entertaining one at that, a brisk genre piece that has a go for broke third act you can't help but admire. However, the project all started from a spec script called "The Cellar" by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken. Once in the offices of Bad Robot, producer J.J. Abrams got the brainwave to connect it to the "Cloverfield" universe, and Damien Chazelle, pre-"Whiplash," came in and rewrote the screenplay into the movie we know now. And as a matter of fact, he almost got behind the camera too. Read More: Review: ‘10 Cloverfield Lane’ Starring John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, And John Gallagher Jr. “Damien was originally going to direct it as well, and then ‘Whiplash’ came up,...

A twisty tale of a woman who wakes up in a bunker with two men, one of whom claims to have saved her from a catastrophe
Starting life as a psychological thriller written on spec by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken under the title The Cellar, this mutated into a distant relative of Matt Reeves’ sci-fi hit Cloverfield thanks to the involvement of Jj Abrams’s Bad Robot productions. With Whiplash writer/director Damien Chazelle now sharing screenwriting credit with Stuecken and Campbell, director Dan Trachtenberg’s feature debut finds Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Michelle waking up in an underground bunker after running her car off the road. With her are John Goodman’s Howard, a survivalist who insists that he saved Michelle not only from the crash, but also from some unspecified toxic catastrophe above ground; and John Gallagher Jr’s Emmett, whose status is initially uncertain, but who believes Howard’s tales of an apocalypse. What follows is a twisty, sinewy three-hander in which each of the trapped trio variously trusts and suspects the others’ moves and motives – more The Disappearance of Alice Creed meets Room than War of the Worlds. All three cast members play their roles to a tee, with Goodman walking a thin line between threat and pathos, while Winstead does a terrific job of leading the audience through the increasingly outlandish revelations of the plot. The film-makers keep us guessing about what’s happening above ground (A nuclear strike? The monster attack of Cloverfield? Or some fantastical fabrication?) but the real drama lies in the interpersonal chamber-piece dynamics of these increasingly frazzled characters.

A marvelous little movie: compact, efficient, almost unbearably intense, smartly (perhaps accidentally) feminist. A glorious treat of pulp genre fun. I’m “biast” (pro): loved Cloverfield, love Mary Elizabeth Winstead
I’m “biast” (con): wary of the forced franchise concept
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Fans of movies generally don’t want to hear the sort of thing we started hearing about 10 Cloverfield Lane when its existence first became known a few months ago: that producer J.J. Abrams took a spec script called The Cellar that had been floating around for a while and rejigged it into a movie that would maybe kinda work as a sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield (on which he also served as producer). This sounds like the worst sort of Hollywood folly: bad enough when movies are created as franchise cutouts, but now they’re shoving preexisting stories into franchise...

Let me begin by saying that this whole article is nothing but spoilers for 10 Cloverfield Lane and the script from which it originated, The Cellar. So, if you have yet to see the movie or if you want to read the original script yourself then this isn’t the space for you. However, if you’ve seen the film and are interested in seeing what had to change in order to make a normal chamber piece thriller into the continuation of the Cloverfield franchise, you are in the right place.
Below we will look at the original idea that got reworked and retrofitted to become 10 Cloverfield Lane, and the changes necessary to make it so. The original script in question comes from Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken back in 2012, before Whiplash‘s Damien Chazelle was hired to develop it further (and potentially direct himself), and Dan Trachtenberg ultimately came on...

Chicago – With “10 Cloverfield Lane,” Producer J.J. Abrams attempts a classic bait and switch on his audience. The name and the tagline suggest a connection to Abrams found footage monster movie, 2008’s “Cloverfield.” But in all honesty, this film has very little to do with the events of that movie.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
It’s actually an old low budget thriller that’s been hastily repackaged and shrouded in secrecy as a marketing ploy. Because if you called this movie “2 Guys, a Girl and a Bomb Shelter” very few people would actually go see it.
The film is more mystery than special effects extravaganza as the audience and the characters try to decipher what exactly is true and what isn’t. After a car accident, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up chained to a wall in a bomb shelter – containing Howard (John Goodman) and a slightly dopey handyman named Emmett (John Gallagher Jr....

"It's a real potboiler that is boiling and boiling and boiling and erupts in a way that few films ever do," director Dan Trachtenberg, 34, exclaimed over his first full-length feature, 10 Cloverfield Lane. Well, it's certainly hard to argue with him.
From the opening Psycho-fueled moments to the allusions to Notorious to the surprising twist of a finale, it's hard to recall a recent film that made squirming in one's seat such a pleasurable pastime. Produced with a sure hand by J.J. Abrams, with a relentlessly unnerving score by Bear McCreary, razor-sharp editing by Stefan Grube, and wry plotting by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken, there is a reason the audience at the screening I attended spilled its popcorn every which way. These folks were freaking out but without having to be exposed to the full panoply of gore and excessive physical violence that most horror films apply with a trowel.

The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street: Trachtenberg’s Debut Promises a Franchise
Good things can come from found footage, at least evidenced by 10 Cloverfield Lane, a loosely related offshoot of the 2008 Matt Reeves’ film, Cloverfield. Beyond the obvious signifier, however, these two films differ greatly, with newcomer Dan Trachtenberg volleying against the odds with inherited, studio owned material. Playing down the obvious sci-fi elements, this beast belongs to the school of less is more, resembling a sort of Misery meets Blast from the Past with peripheral elements of the “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” back story thrown in. Pared down to a trio surviving what seems either an apocalyptic event or aggressive extraterrestrial attack, the script (co-written by Matthew Stuecken, Josh Campbell and Whiplash director Damien Chazelle) wisely focuses on more domestic terrors, where survival of the fittest scenarios prove mankind to be his own worst enemy even when faced with possible extinction.

If you walk into the theater expecting a direct sequel to Cloverfield, you may be disappointed, but I'd expect most audiences to be quite satisfied with the smart, character-driven thriller that is 10 Cloverfield Lane. Economically told from the start, the film moves beautifully. This is a strong feature debut for Dan Trachtenberg, working from a script by Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken, and Damien Chazelle, and a beautiful showcase for three very good actors. It is simple, it is direct, and it is impressive. Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) flees her marriage after something happens with her husband, and as she's on the road, upset, she is in a terrible car accident. When she wakes up, she is in a bunker owned by Howard (John Goodman), a farmer, who tells her that there has been some sort of attack on the surface, and they are unable to leave now. There is one other person,...

Turning Dan Trachtenberg’s Valencia into a spinoff Cloverfield story was, in my opinion, wholly unnecessary. The connection is cheaply face-value and so horridly understated that fans of Matt Reeves’ original large-scale disasterpiece can’t help but feel cheated by such a slap-dash “sequel-ish” attempt. Which, unfortunately, is a real disappointment, because those people harping solely on mismanaged marketing schemes won’t be talking about what a dynamite directorial debut 10 Cloverfield Lane is for Trachtenberg, and what a thrilling post-apocalyptic nightmare he’s able to create. You won’t get more first-person shaky cam, or gigantic city-leveling monsters – which is just damn fine considering the tense survivalist story that unfolds.

Up until he helped make Star Wars: The Force Awakens one of the biggest hits of all time, J.J. Abrams was perhaps best known for his secretive storytelling ways, both in movies and on television. Notably, the way that he and his company Bad Robot launched the trailer for Cloverfield. If you recall, that first teaser dropped in front of Transformers with absolutely no advance warning, suggesting a potential blockbuster had been made right under our noses. Once the head of the Statue of Liberty launched at us, we were sold. Abrams did that again with Super 8, and currently is doing it again with this week’s release of 10 Cloverfield Lane. I’ve now seen 10 Cloverfield Lane, which for my money is one of the best films of 2016 so far. It manages to do a lot with a little. I won’t ruin anything, but trust me when I...

Many people assumed that 10 Cloverfield Lane would be a direct sequel to Matt Reeves' original film, but during an interview with Empire, producer J.J. Abrams insisted that though this is a "spiritual successor", it's very much its own thing - with its own monster! "Well, what I’ll say is that there is a new monster in this movie," the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director confirmed. "It isn’t the Cloverfield monster that you know, but this all plays into a sort of larger conceit that we have. As I said earlier, calling it Cloverfield 2 would have been overtly misleading. This is definitely its own thing. 10 Cloverfield Lane was written by Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken and Damien Chazelle, and directed by Dan Trachtenberg. It stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr., and is scheduled for release on March 11th 2016.

Abrams dropped a bombshell on the world a few weeks back when we learned the little bunker thriller his Bad Robot production company was making was, in fact, *maybe* a part of the Cloverfield universe. After a fantastic, mostly musically charged, first trailer we now have an intense new spot that was featured during teh super Bowl.
The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who has previously been attached to now defunct projects like Y: The Last Man and others.
The original script, title “The Cellar”, was written by by Josh Campbell and Matt Steucken. Then Damien Chazelle did a rewrite.

California couple Josh Campbell and Mac Gaspard wanted something very simple in their lives: A loft-style home with elegant lighting and an open floor plan. In order to do so they decided it was going to take some serious renovation. And since this California couple knows style, the proof can be found in their newly-renovated, loft-style townhouse. But what did they do to the house exactly? In the kitchen they decided that an industrial type table for four would be the perfect style they were looking for. In terms of hardware, they did a complete update throughout the home to

Hello again, dear readers. We’re in the middle of January, and it’s still slim pickings in terms of new movies, although I plan on checking out the new horror movie The Boy this weekend. But there are still cool new trailers for me to watch and analyze. This week’s column takes a look at the first trailer for the upcoming science-fiction mystery thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Premise: Waking up from a car accident, a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) finds herself in the basement of a man (John Goodman) who says he’s saved her life from a chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable.
My take: In this day and age of 24/7 media coverage, it’s nearly impossible for a film to truly sneak up and surprise us. One film that did manage that was Cloverfield (2008), the found-footage giant monster film from producer J. J. Abrams,...

It's billed as a sequel to Cloverfield, but is 10 Cloverfield Lane all it seems? We take a look at the subject of unrelated sequels...
In an era where it's just about impossible to make a high-profile movie without at least something leaking onto the web, producer Jj Abrams seems to have pulled off the ultimate coup in recent months: he and his company Bad Robot have secretly created a follow-up, of sorts, to the 2008 hit monster movie, Cloverfield.
On the 15th January, a trailer landed for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a claustrophobic horror thriller that Abrams described in a statement to Collider as a "blood relative" of that earlier film directed by Matt Reeves.
The premise is this: Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character, Michelle, is injured in a car accident and wakes up in a bunker with 40-something survivalist, Howard (John Goodman).
Howard tells Michelle that some kind of...

An underground bunker could either be a sanctuary or a prison in the recently revealed first trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, the follow-up (but not direct sequel) to 2008's found footage creature feature Cloverfield.
Revealed last night at screenings for 13 Hours, the debut trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane officially pulls the curtain on what has been something of a secret project at Jj Abrams' Bad Robot Productions.
Set in an underground shelter while the world may or may not be going to hell outside the locked door, 10 Cloverfield Lane looks like it takes place in the same world as Matt Reeves' Cloverfield.
To help point speculations in the right direction, Abrams had this to say to Collider:
“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the...

Audiences were in for a surprise during last night's screening of Michael Bay‘s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, as they were shown a trailer for a movie from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company that seemed to be some sort of Cloverfield follow-up. Abrams has since released a statement to Collider. “The idea came up a long time ago during production," said the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director. "We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.” What exactly does blood relative mean in this context? We're not certain, but we can assume this is at least set in the same universe as Cloverfield. Check out the trailer below. Thoughts? 10 Cloverfield Lane was written by Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken and Damien Chazelle, and directed by Dan Trachtenberg.

Tyrese Gibson is a sometime model, R&B artist and MTV VJ, not to mention Transformers and Fast and Furious actor. Recently, he’s been campaigning hard for consideration to play the new movie version of Green Lantern. That is if all you need to do to campaign these days is post lots of pictures to social media. I guess it worked for Vin Diesel.
A much more solid prospect for the man is Desert Eagle, a new actioner he dreamt up with Patient Zero’s Mike Le. According to Deadline the script for the new film is being written by Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell, and focuses on a couple of border patrol agents who get in deep with a drug cartel headquartered in a casino on a Native American reservation.

Though all eyes have been trained on Furious 7 following its explosive TV spot that revved onto the scene during last weekend’s Super Bowl, Universal has secured the immediate future of one of the racing franchise’s key players in actor-musician Tyrese Gibson, after the studio snagged the actor to star in new action flick Desert Eagle.
News comes by way of Deadline, with the report suggesting that the project could serve as a star vehicle for Gibson with the Fast and Furious franchise coasting into its twilight years. In fact, it’s understood that the actor — best known for playing Roman Pierce in Universal’s street-racing series — will executive produce this new actioner, after scripting a draft alongside Mike Le (Patient Zero) some time ago.

Just after we learned that Fast & Furious franchise star Tyrese Gibson was trying really hard to land the lead role in the eventual reboot of Green Lantern at Warner Bros. Pictures, the actor is heading to the studio that made the first adaptation of the DC Comics superhero for his next project. Deadline has word that Gibson is attached to star in Desert Eagle, an action spec script that the actor/rapper wrote with Mike Le. The story follows two border patrol agents sent to investigate a drug cartel being operated out of a Native American reservation casino. That sounds kind of like an old school thriller premise from the 90s. The script will now be rewritten by Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell (they also wrote the remake of Snabba Cash in development) with Ted 2 producer Scott Stuber on board as well, but the original script should be a...

After the premake of The Thing lots of horror fans wanted to lock Mary Elizabeth Winstead up along with everyone else who botched what should have been a killer flick. Still, it wasn't really her fault, and she's back in a new horror flick, The Cellar.
According to Variety, Winstead is in negotiations to star in Paramount and Bad Robot’s new film which also stars John Goodman. Dan Trachtenberg will direct with J.J. Abrams producing for Bad Robot.
The majority of the movie takes place in an underground cellar and revolves around a young woman who wakes up in the cellar after a severe car accident and fears she has been abducted. Her captor, a doomsday prepper, tells her he saved her life and that there has been a terrible chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable. Running is a very hard sport to depict onscreen. Without a rousing score by Vangelis or the horns of “Gonna Fly Now” blasting through the speakers, it is very hard for any filmmaker or actor to show off a character’s speed or endurance in a memorable way. Leg power does not often translate to emotional power on the screen, which is one of the many problems facing 4 Minute Mile, a sports drama that barely goes the distance to be either inspirational or inspired.

Commercial and short film director Dan Trachtenberg has had a few feature projects lined up over the last couple of years. One was an adaptation of Y The Last Man, but there's been no real movement on any of those projects. It looks like Trachtenberg's first feature film will end up being a low budget thriller called Valencia that is being produced by Bad Robot and J.J. Abrams.
According to The Wrap, "the majority of the movie takes place in an underground cellar, home to a teenage girl and a caretaker. The girl woke up in the cellar after a car accident, at which point her eerie companion tells her a nuclear attack has devastated society. The girl still hopes to escape."

Horror movies need not have inflated budgets to be effective, as films like Insidious and Sinister have recently proven. Following in their low-budget footsteps is a film called Valencia, which has just been given the green light. Read on!
The Wrap reports that J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot will be producing the thriller for Paramount Insurge, with commercial director Dan Trachtenberg attached to direct. Dan Casey wrote the script, based on an earlier draft by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken.

Commercials director Dan Trachtenberg is set to make his feature debut on the low-budget thriller "Valencia" for Bad Robot and Paramount Insurge. Filming begins this Fall.
Set mostly in an underground cellar, a teenage girl wakes up there after a car accident. A caretaker tells her a nuclear attack has devastated society and forces her to stay inside. She begins to plan her escape.
Dan Casey penned the most recent draft of the script which originated with Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken.
Trachtenberg has been attached to several movies over the past few years, most notably the adaptation of the acclaimed comic "Y: The Last Man".
That film has to get into production within the next few months or the rights revert back and the project has to be setup all over again somewhere else.
With Trachtenberg now committed to "Valencia" as his first film, it's likely a 'Y' film is still many years away.

Has Hollywood found the next Neill Blomkamp? Like the South African director, whose short Alive In Joburg caught the eye back in 2006, Dan Trachtenberg made a big splash with Portal: No Escape, a short based on the dimensionally-abstract computer game. Now he’s getting a shot at a feature length project. It’s called Valencia and it’ll be the work of J. J. Abrams’ Bad Robot marque for Paramount’s indie(st) arm, Insurge. With a modest $5m budget, Trachtenberg will tackle a scenario in which a teenage girl awakes in a cellar after a car crash to discover from a strange caretaker that society has been devastated by nuclear attack. We’re assuming it’s a psychological thriller that will tackle some of the same themes of captivity and escape as that Portal short. The script is the work of Dan Casey, who reshaped an earlier draft by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken.
