On the eve of Horror Channel’s UK TV premiere of Patchwork, director Tyler MacIntyre reflects on body image issues. twisting audience expections and his admiration for current female genre directors.
Patchwork finally gets its UK TV premiere on Horror Channel. Excited or what?
Relieved actually. It’s been a long time coming. The third screening of the film ever happened at FrightFest in Glasgow and since then I’ve had people asking me when it was going to come out. The UK genre fans are among the most diehard in the world, so I’m very excited to finally have it available for them.
You were in attendance when Patchwork, your directorial feature debut, received its European premiere screening at FrightFest Glasgow 2016. What are your abiding memories?

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the distributor, The Orchard. **there are a couple of minor spoilers here. Director: Tyler MacIntyre. Writers: Chris Lee Hill and Tyler MacIntyre. Cast: Tory Stolper, Tracey Fairaway, Maria Blasucci, James Phelps and Corey Sorenson. Patchwork has been completed since at least 2015. From director Tyler MacIntyre and writer Chris Lee Hill, the film has recently released through Video-on-demand, via The Orchard. A festival favourite, Patchwork involves a three-in-one deal, in which three women are sewn into one. The results should be horrifying, but they are more laugh worthy. Some of the awkward kissing scenes are laugh out loud funny. Meanwhile, a sub-villain and villain are pushing the action forward. One of the evil wretch's identity is only revealed near the end of the film. Also, the writers take the topic of cosmetic surgery to the point of hyperbole. What would...

Chicago – Tom Hanks is using his golden years as a vehicle to stretch his performance skills, and his role as a sort of “Death of a Salesman” spin in “A Hologram for the King” gives him an opportunity to keep stretching. The stylish film floats within the focus on his character, and he delivers.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Based on a Dave Eggers novel, “A Hologram for the King” has a lot going on, as Hanks portrays a character with one last shot at making the sale in the oddball Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Director Tom Tykwer (“Cloud Atlas”) adds some European-style visuals to the story, and the whole things works because the blend is right. Hanks handles the path of the role through a nice progression, and uses his world weariness as an older actor effectively. The story peters out a bit towards the end, but in general the movie is entertaining,...

Usually when the Middle East shows up in modern films it’s the setting for dramas and thrillers. The troubled global “hot spot” has been the backdrop for “based on a true story” tales of the military with American Sniper and one of the first flicks to be released this year, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi. So it’s surprising that this region has been the setting for two comedies this year (Salmon Fishing In The Yeman tested the waters five years ago). And one big source of the humor is the culture clash when Americans arrive there. It’s the old “fish out of water” recipe for laughs. A couple of months ago, it was Tina Fey butting heads in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. And now arriving in Saudi Arabia is the affable everyman (really every-American-man) Tom Hanks, an actor familiar with that comedy trope, going back thirty years...

This week, both at the Tribeca Film Festival as well as opening in theaters, we have an independent movie that stars Tom Hanks. Especially considering how infrequently Hanks acts in small films these days, this is something to take notice of. The film in question? Well, it’s A Hologram for the King, of course. Side note, this is another example of a thing that I mentioned yesterday, namely that a Tribeca title is going basically straight to general release. There’s another one of these still to discuss before the week is out, but right now, Hanks’ flick is what is in the spotlight. I see it tomorrow, so instead of delving too deep into it, I’ll be looking at his career and what I feel are his best performances so far to date. Fun, right? We’ll, here goes nothing! Quickly, a bit on the film itself.

The Canadian horror comedy Patchwork is set for its Calgary Premiere. This film, influenced by Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, tears three women apart and puts them back together again. A teaser for the film (hosted below) was released for this feature earlier in the year. The clip's music is soothing, while the images are not. From director Tyler MacIntyre, the film stars: Tory Stolper, Tracey Fairaway, Maria Blasucci and James Phelps. Playing at several upcoming showings, a preview of Patchwork's Calgary release is hosted here. The film calls itself a "throw-back" horror-comedy. Likely influenced by the low-brow comedies of the '80s, three women find themselves sewn to each other, after a wild night of partying. Now, they must work together, in one body, or lose what little remains of themselves. The Calgarian event takes place on April 16th, 2016. Director Tyler MacIntyre will be in attendance and Calgarians should head out to the theatre,...

Breaking the fourth wall with relative ease, Tom Hanks’ astute businessman headlines the first full trailer for A Hologram for the King – “Sometimes you have to change your scenery… to change your life.”
And that’s exactly what Hanks’ lead does. Playing up the fish-out-of-water dynamic, today’s English-language snippet ships our lead character off to Saudi Arabia in order to negotiate a lucrative deal. Meeting with a wealthy monarch, the idea is to pitch a technology that would allow for, well, A Hologram for the King.
Reuniting with Cloud Atlas director Tom Tykwer – he co-directed the time-spanning adaptation alongside the Wachowski siblings – Tom Hanks’ latest is a far cry from sprawling science fiction. Mind you, it’s a fellow adaptation, this time lifted from Dave Eggers’ novel of the same name.

Fresh off negotiating a deal to rescue a captured ally in Steven Spielberg’s wartime drama Bridge of Spies, Tom Hank’s next role will have the Oscar-winner make tracks to Saudi Arabia, where his hapless Alan Clay will negotiate a decidedly different set of deals in A Hologram For the King.
Reteaming with his Cloud Atlas helmer Tom Tykwer – he co-directed the time-spanning adaptation alongside the Wachowski siblings – the German filmmaker’s latest adaptation also represents a change of pace from David Mitchell’s sprawling sci-fi insofar as A Hologram For the King is rooted in the harsh reality of international commerce.
Headlining the feature as Alan Clay, it is Tom Hanks who stars as the washed-up business in desperate need to close a lucrative It contract. Should pen meet paper, it’ll pave the way for a huge new complex to begin construction out in the Saudi Arabia desert.

The last time Tom Hanks teamed up with Tom Tykwer, it was alongside The Wachowskis for an adaptation of David Mitchell's acclaimed "Cloud Atlas." Well, Hanks clearly liked working with Tykwer, and now the fruits of their second collaboration, also based on a well-received novel, are finally seeing the light. THR has debuted the first image from "A Hologram For The King," based on the book by Dave Eggers. Hanks is the biggest name in the cast that features Sarita Choudhury, Omar Elba, Tracey Fairaway, David Menkin and Tom Skerritt, with the dramedy following a desperate American salesman who heads to Saudi Arabia to land a lucrative It contract. Presumably cultures will clash, and this seemingly fish-out-of-water tale looks perfect for Hanks' sensibility so we're curious to see how it turns out. No word yet on release dates or anything like that, so this image will have to suffice for now.

The picture takes place far away from the recession-weary USA, as an up-and-coming Saudi Arabian city provides the backdrop for foundering American businessman Alan Clay’s (Tom Hanks) last-ditch effort to stave off bankruptcy, pay his daughter’s college fees, and finally accomplish something big. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini’s chemistry make for a heartwarming film in Fox Searchlights new blu-ray release Enough Said.
Divorced mom Eva (Louis-Dreyfus) may be falling for Albert (Gandolfini), a sweet, funny, like-minded divorcé. But as their relationship blossoms, Eva befriends Marianne (Keener), who’s always complaining about her ex-husband. When Eva realizes that Albert is the target of Marianne’s rants, she begins to question her own perceptions about first impressions and second chances.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini have an undeniable chemistry together on-screen. The two definitely carry this film, and make it enjoyable. The script however, is not as solid as I had hoped. The dialog could use some punching up, and the way they keep letting Eva make stupid mistakes is a bit infuriating at times. If it weren’t for Louis-Dreyfus and Gandolfini, I probably would have turned it off. They make this film...

Finally a rom-com for adults about love after divorce that's actually funny and romantic
• Interview: Julia Louis-Dreyfus
• Enough Said: watch the trailer
• David Cox: Is Enough Said about the dangers of obesity?
As Etta James might say: at last. A romantic comedy that is romantic and funny and not simply an insult to the intelligence of all carbon-based life forms. Nicole Holofcener's Enough Said is a step up for this director, in whose previous work I have sometimes heard a few false notes – inaudible, I should however confess, to many others. She has created a thoroughly likable and genuinely funny film and its stars, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the late James Gandolfini, are a revelation, singly and together. Like their director, they unassumingly but decidedly took it to the next level on this movie. The fact that Gandolfini still had so much to offer as an actor is desperately sad.

Seeing as Hollywood is littered with an abundance of meaningless romantic comedies every year, it’s a genre somewhat tarnished from a critical point of view. However when done well, it can be the most delightful of territories to delve into, and Nicole Holofcener’s Enough Said is a rare gem in that department – bringing together two of American TV’s most adored icons, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and the late James Gandolfini, in what is the latter’s penultimate feature film.
Eva (Louis-Dreyfus) is only a mere matter of weeks away from living alone. As her daughter Ellen (Tracey Fairaway) is preparing to head off to college, and leave her single, divorced mum all by herself. On the prowl for some companionship, the masseuse meets Albert (Gandolfini) at a party, striking up an instant bond with a man currently in the exact same predicament. Enough Said comes from the mind of writer/director Nicole Holofcener, whose works tend to focus on foibles and miscommunications among small groups of upper-middle-class characters. Some of her characters can be gratingly obtuse, yet always have a grain of something relatable about them. This movie differs from her earlier work in that it veers more towards the romantic comedy genre. It's still very obviously a Holofcener film, however.
Divorced masseuse Eva, played by the marvelous Julia Louis-Dreyfus, begins to date divorced museum worker Albert (the late James Gandolfini in his second-to-last film role), and attempts a friendship with new client Marianne (Catherine Keener). She also worries about her daughter Ellen (Tracey Fairaway, webseries First Day), about to head off to college. These three relationships form the core of the film. Once Eva discovers that Marianne and Albert were once married, she decides not to tell either of them that...

All right you kids, get out of the pool! Time to give the adults a chance to have some fun! Now by “pool” I really mean movie romances, perhaps even the much maligned “rom-com”. Middle aged folks can still meet cute and fall in love, right? Even if they’ve been down the aisle before. I mean, it’s possible. Just like in the old crooner standard “The Second Time Around”. That notion is explored in the new film from independent writer/director Nicole Holofcener. She’s made a name for herself over the last decade with her low-key character studies which always feature the talented actress Catherine Keener. Holofcener has also been prolific in television and has cast several TV stars in her last couple of features like Jennifer Aniston in Friends With Money. Her new film casts two iconic tube actors in this tender love story with a rather offbeat title,...

It might be hard to imagine starting your own fashion blog, rising to international front-row-at-Fashion-Week recognition, growing that blog into an online magazine with paid contributors, being profiled in the New Yorker and co-starring in an acclaimed film release all before graduating high school, but that's just what Tavi Gevinson has done. The 17-year-old fashionista and Rookie Magazine founder has a key supporting role opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the late James Gandolfini in "Enough Said," but still lives with her parents in Illinois.
Directed by Nicole Holofcener ("Friends With Money," "Please Give") and boasting Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the late James Gandolfini in the top billing, the rom-com is a sweet and authentic glimpse into a woman's evolving relationships with her beau (Gandolfini), a new friend (Catherine Keener), old friends (Toni Collette and Ben Falcone) and her college-bound daughter (Tracey Fairaway). Gevinson plays Chloe, best friend to Louis-Dreyfus' character's daughter. She's...

Hugh Jackman goes extra dark in Prisoners, but the real surprise, says People's critic, is the late James Gandolfini showing his lighter side in Enough Said. See This var brightcovevideoid = '2682946555001'; Prisoners There's nothing like the psychic shock and horror of child abduction. It terrifies communities and sends parents into entirely understandable panic. So it's with no small calculation that Prisoners snatches two children right out from under their watchful parents' noses - and on Thanksgiving, no less. Then it gets really mean. If you're no fan of on-screen brutality, then this is not your Saturday night at the movies.

The one constant surprise about getting older is that the ongoing lesson you soon learn is that you'll never figure it all out. Whatever you seemed confident and sure about at twenty becomes more nuanced by thirty and by the time you're seeing forty on the horizon, what was important two decades ago may seem trivial now. In short, life doesn't keep you on a consistent learning curve, and continually changes the game and the rules, but lets all hope we have the heart and small wisdoms of Nicole Holofcener's "Enough Said" to carry us through. Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) has certainly been a dealt a hand she couldn't have imagined when she first got married. Now a divorced, single mom in middle age, she's also now facing the prospect of an empty nest with her daughter Ellen (Tracey Fairaway) shortly leaving home to fly across the country to start college.

There's an amusing wistfulness to Nicole Holofcener's latest exploration of woman and love, "Enough Said." And since it co-stars the late-James Gandolfini, you can throw in a touch of melancholy, a sort of dark cloud that hangs over an otherwise light and hopeful L.A. romance among those pushing 50. He gives a poignancy to one of his last screen appearances that lives on past his death.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars as Eva, a long-divorced single-mom and massage therapist. Her job is a bore, her daughter (Tracey Fairaway) is about to move off to college and she's resigned to the shrinking dating scene she faces.
Then, Eva joins her friends (Toni Collette, Ben Falcone) for a party. That's where she meets Marianne (Catherine Keener). She could be a new customer and maybe even a new friend.

★★☆☆☆ Based on a true case of human trafficking in the Us, Megan Griffiths' Eden (2012) is a decidedly low-key circumvention on the usual gritty, unforgiving exposés of the sex industry. Set in a small rural town back in 1994, naive teenager Hyun Jae (Jamie Chung) works in her parents' bric-a-brac store, occasionally sneaking out-back to share a smoke with her rebellious friend, Abbie (Tracey Fairaway). The pair are intent on exploring their burgeoning sexuality, with Abbie coaxing Hyun to join her for an evening of underage drinking and harmless flirting. Here, Hyun Jae catches the eye of a young fireman who offers to give her a lift.
However, the next thing Hyun Jae experiences is a chloroform hangover and the view from inside the trunk of a Chevrolet - all before being hauled off to a soulless warehouse in the middle of nowhere where she, like many, will be held hostage...

"Enough Said" is a romantic comedy about two middle-aged people -- played by James Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus -- trying to navigate the mess of falling in love again. You can watch the trailer here.
It hasn't been long since the unexpected and tragic death of James Gandolfini, but "Enough Said" does represent one of the actor's final projects. In addition to the story told by the film, "Enough Said" gives a special look into the vibrant actor's work.
In "Enough Said," Louis-Dreyfus plays Eva, a divorced masseuse dreading her daughter's coming departure for college. When Eva meets Albert (Gandolfini), she finds a man facing the same sort of empty-nest problems. The two quickly develop a romance. All is well until Eva's new massage client, Marianne (Catherine Keener), starts stirring up relationship doubts by complaining about her ex-husband. That's because Marianne's ex-husband is Albert.
