DC Comics’ “Batman” #123, available May 3, 2022, is written by Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Howard Porter and Trevor Hairsine, with covers by Howard Porter, Gabrielle Dell'Otto, Jay Anacleto and Jock:
“…’ Batman’ and ‘Robin’ are finally reunited. Together they will hunt for the truth behind the death of ‘Ra's al Ghul’ But then who is left to defend the ‘Secret Society’ against the ‘League of Shadows’? Meanwhile, the The ‘Deathstroke' fight against the ‘Demon's Shadow’ ends with a shocking cliffhanger, but what happens when you get Deathstroke infected with ‘Joker’ toxin? …”

Yes, I know, another ‘event’ comic, but bear with me here. Firstly, DC of late have been doing these way better than Marvel have. Secondly, the DCeased books have actually been pretty good up to now. We had the original six issue mini first, also by Tom Taylor and Trevor Hairsine, then earlier this year we had the bridging digital only story DCeased: Hope at World’s End, now we have Dead Planet. Tom Taylor’s been involved in all, so you would have to assume this book would continue the high quality of the others. The concept was very simple. The Anti-Life Equation was used to infect the Earth with a Zombie-like virus, with people turning on each other, including heroes and villains. We saw the gradual breakdown of society as pockets of survivors struggled to survive.

The smash success of DCeased, the DC zombies comic is all in its emotional power.
This article contains major spoilers for DCeased.
When DCeased was announced, it’s safe to assume it was met with more than a few eye rolls. Did the world really need a DC zombies book as the rest of pop culture seems to be putting a lid on the zombie phenomenon for another few years? “I'm not a zombie fan either, or a horror fan, like at all,” says Tom Taylor, writer of DCeased, in a chat ahead of the release of the sold-out hardcover collection of what ended up being a critical darling and a runaway train on comic shop shelves. “What I am is a DC fan, and I enjoy a challenge. So for me, it was actually something I hemmed and hawed about when [DCeased editor] Ben Abernathy contacted me about it.

The DCeased run from DC Comics has been outstanding. Each issue's variant cover is an homage to a classic horror movie, including A Nightmare on Elm Street, It, and The Nun, just to name a few. This month's issue (issue #4) of DCeased takes on the Final Destination franchise. Also in today's Comics Corner: Elvira: Mistress of the Dark #8, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer #7.
*Recommendation* DCeased #4: "The Daily Planet has become a beacon of hope for the living as the Anti-Life Equation sweeps the planet. What’s left of the Justice League have begun to gather there, bringing survivors and family alike. But the city is being overrun with infected humans” and superhumans! The war for Metropolis begins!

The DC Universe is bringing out the dead. Meet the DC zombies in this exclusive first look at DCEased #1 from DC Comics.
DCeased feels long overdue. The global zombie phenomenon really took off almost ten years ago when The Walking Dead first aired, but it has been an ongoing comics concern for more than 15 years. The Walking Dead’s first issue came out in 2003 before kicking off a television phenomenon in 2010, and since then everyone from Marvel to Idw’s Hasbro licenses have done big zombie events. Marvel Zombies in particular holds up well to this day. Criminal's Sean Phillips on art with obvious choice writer Robert Kirkman unsurprisingly told very effective and horrifying zombie stories using popular superhero characters.
It looks like this unlikely trend will continue with DCeased. Goofy name aside, it looks like the book is going to work because it has some real...

DCeased will bring zombies to the DC Universe, as the World's Greatest Heroes face the biggest threat to the planet yet!
When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the multiverse, at least according to a new six-part DC event series launching in May from writer Tom Taylor (Injustice) and artists Trevor Harisine (Legends of the Dark Knight) and Stefano Gaudiano (The Walking Dead). The series, titled DCeased, will see Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the DC pantheon of heroes racing against time to stop a virus spreading rapidly across the planet that turns the infected into rabid killing machines.
According to the synopsis, the horde of zombies infected are not technically undead but just people who've been exposed to a "techno-virus." Are we perhaps stepping into Stephen King territory here?
The cause of this particular techno-zombie apocalypse seems to be Darkseid's Anti-Life equation,...

During their 3rd annual Valiant Summit, Valiant Entertainment once again gave us an amazing line up of books that will be released throughout this year, starting with last months launch of X-o Manowar and concluding with December's release of Quantum and Woody. It is important to note that Valiant Entertainment has only been around since their relaunch in 2012. They had such an impact that they won the award of Comic Publisher of the Year from Diamond Comic Distributors that same year. Now they are on the verge of bigger and better things including a YouTube series called Ninjak Vs. The Valiant Universe, a multi-movie deal with Sony which includes a Bloodshot movie and a Quantum and Woody television show that will be made by the Russo brothers, who are currently working on the next Avengers film.
They were very excited about their line up as their first title X-o Manowar #1 has already sold over 90,000 copies,...

Legends of the Geomancer #1 Review
I loved this so much.
Damn, I’ve missed me some Fred Van Lente pacing. I’ve been enjoying the hell out of Valiant comics who has had talent like Jeff Lemire, Joshua Dysart, and Matt Kindt writing a stable of books that are among the best of the year, especially when considering Kindt’s and Trevor Hairsine’s Divinity, but where books that trio are helming are often grimdarkish looks at the Valiant present and future, Van Lente be the perfect choice to helm what is a bit of an odd project in Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer, because of his cynic-proof style of storytelling that Archer & Armstrong fans have had to miss in the Valiant universe.
And he was. And we did.
We are introduced to intrusions upon the earth. Clad in the bones of former life, painted white faces riding...

This won’t be a review and you will learn nothing about what occurs in this issue from me. In the recent past I have gone on at length raving about Matt Kindt and Trevor Hairsine’s work on Divinity for Valiant. You can find those pieces here at Boomtron on each issue as I, more often than not, gleefully stumble trying to find the nature of and meaning of a new god in a new comic book (and possible future cinematic) universe, both in their initial stages of existing. Ninjak #4 though? I don’t even want to talk about this issue. And I really won’t. Not because of the same reason I didn’t talk about Dead Drop #2. I loved this, and you have to experience it.
You won’t be able to telegraph it.
The ending of the last issue left us with that was more or less a standard cliffhanger.

Divinity #4
Writer – Matt Kindt
Penciller – Trevor Hairsine
Inker – Ryan Winn
Colourist – David Baron
Letterer – David Lanphear
Published by Valiant Comics
Matt Kindt’s script throughout Divinity discusses the flipping through of one’s life story, like it were the pages of some sacred text. We as individuals pave the way for these pages to be written out, even if they aren’t done in a literal sense. In the case of Abram Adams, or Divinity, his impact as a godlike figure has become more prevalent as the series has progressed and hits a pinnacle by the end of this final issue. Deep down, most people on this planet search for a sense of meaning, of a purpose to live and a certain hope of your existence making an impact of some sort. This impact, to some, is a hope that you will live on, whether it is in the form of an offspring,...

Published by Valiant Entertainment
Although Valiant has only released three issues of Divinity to date, and will conclude upon the fourth and final issue, it is pretty safe to say that this mini-series deserves to be in the conversation of one of the best stories that Valiant has produced. Divinity introduces and manages to merge a brand new character within the Valiant universe that is both empathetic through his purpose and fearful from his unknown level of power from the cosmos.
Abram, in the present time codenamed as ‘Divinity’, has been stripped of his name, his identity, and like most stories in which a mysterious, unknown individual that comes to Earth, is approached with extreme caution. From the first issue, Abram’s past haunts his present. His extended time...

Matt Kindt seamlessly goes from solo street level corporate espionage adventures of Ninjak to Valiant comics cosmic with the third issue of Divinity, where one becomes three, twice, and where Kindt and Trevor Hairsine takes us where no man has gone before.
That there were two more members on the mission with Abram makes sense, I pointed out visual evidence of that possibility in my review of Divinity #2, and the number 3 tends to be symbolic in a lot of ways, including in religious discourse. It strikes me that they are all conveniently color coded, Abram is red, a female is orange, another man is either black or gray. Now Valiant fans will scurry to find characters in other titles wearing those as accents.
At the moment of truth, we get a glimpse of a woman, who everyone in Valiant fandom … okay just me wants to associate with Mothergod, which coincidentally...

This was a review I had elsewhere (from the 19th of this month) and brought over here, to go along with my recent take on The Valiant #4 (a game changer), for the greater glory of Valiant comics.
I’m going to begin at the end. I do so because it answers a question I posed had regarding the active integration of Divinity into the Valiant universe and does so emphatically. What seemed like a first issue that was a bit methodically paced for a four issue mini, Divinity #2 changes that and adroitly avoids a pitfall that I talked about when discussing the function of H.A.R.D. Corps. Matt Kindt and Trevor Hairsine are delivering the book that makes one most recall one of Valiant’s must enduring taglines: Time is not Absolute.
It’s only right that Divinity #2 brings us Unity.
Bringing in Unity does two things. It...

Tim Daniel and Michael Moreci tackled werewolves in Curse and they’re back with a Middle Eastern supernatural tale in Burning Fields. With the first of eight issues due out on Wednesday, we caught up with the two comic book writers to talk about their latest project:
After working together on Curse, did you guys already know that you’d be getting together for another project? How did that come about?
Tim Daniel: Curse was a bit of lightning in the bottle. I think we all were very gratified by the experience of working together on that series. Personally speaking, I certainly was very excited by the result and welcomed the chance to be included with the same creative team again which extends to letterer Jim Campbell and our new colorist Joana Lafuente. Every single contributor to both Curse and Burning Fields are top-notch storytellers, so I definitely appreciate being in their company.

It was recently announced that Bill & Ted would be making a triumphant return in comic book form. The comic will be called Wyld Stallyns, and thanks to the Nerdist, today we have the first art and details surrounding the project.
The comic will run for six issues, and it comes from writers Brian Lynch (Puss in Boots) and artists Jerry Gaylord and Ian McGinty. I know we all would rather see a third movie, but at least William “Bill” S. Preston, Esq., and Theodore “Ted” Logan will be back in a new adventure! The comic will be released in March 2015.
Here are the details from the publisher, Boom! Studios:
Why We Love It: Similar to our Big Trouble in Little China comics, we’re returning readers to one of our favorite—and most excellent—cult-classic properties with a new Bill & Ted adventure of epic proportions. And because we’re fans first,...

In comics news this week, Mark Doyle has been appointed the new Batman Group Editor at DC Comics, replacing Mike Marts. Marts has gone to work for Marvel as a result of DC’s announcement that they will be moving its New York office to Burbank, California in 2015. Doyle is currently a Vertigo editor who was most responsible for bringing Scott Snyder into DC after editing his American Vampire series, and also edits Snyder’s other Vertigo series, The Wake. Though Doyle is excited about the promotion, he will only be the editor for a year as he will not be moving to California in 2015.
Snyder is also pleased with the appointment, tweeting that “Gotham couldn’t be in better hands for Batman’s 75th”, referring to 2014 being Batman’s 75th anniversary since he first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939.
Valiant are doing a similar scheme to Marvel’s All-New Marvel Now!

Even though this book has been dropping once a month like clockwork, so far anyway, the wait between issues has been excruciating. It may have only debuted two months ago, yet the tale of Gilad Anna-Padda is so expertly handled that writer Greg Pak has created a monster with his fans. But does Pak’s lightning remain trapped in its epic bottle, or are some crack starting to shine in the warriors armour?
After declaring a war on the gods last month, Gilad and his daughter Xaran head to the local K-Mart to stock up on some munitions. After some father-daughter bonding, the kind that only two immortal warriors could have, the two...

I feel like a comic called Eternal Warrior which prominently features sword/hand-to-hand combat as plot points shouldn’t be this good a comic – it should be lowest common denominator stuff, gratuitous to the point of camp-ness in its focus on fighting; and yet Eternal Warrior is none of those things. Which isn’t to say it doesn’t live up to its title: the main character Gilad is 6000 years old, doesn’t age and writer Greg Pak works all of the story possibilities that a man who has lived so long could have experienced, and there is a lot of violence with at least two big fight scenes appearing in each comic in the series so far. But Eternal Warrior is also really well structured with each of the issues in the series so far doing a lot to establish character, story, and tone.

Greg Pak and Trevor Hairsine begin their run on Eternal Warrior in a flurry of ancient Mesopotamian steel and blood as they hit the “warrior” part of the title hard! Opening in the ancient world 6000 years ago, our hero Gilad Anni-Padda the Eternal Warrior, prepares to face an inhuman enemy in the form of the Death Cult of Nergal, alongside his army and son. But his headstrong daughter Xaran also wants to join the battle – and she’s not taking no for an answer!
I love that all of Valiant’s books are tied together in a similar way to the Marvel Universe. If you’ve been reading X-o Manowar you’ll know Gilad plays a big role in that story as Aric’s former mentor while he’s also appeared in Archer and Armstrong as Armstrong’s brother. He gets his own series at last which starts off several...

Valiant Entertainment has announced that artist Trevor Hairsine will be joining the breakout comic book publisher as an exclusive creative talent! The artist first worked with Valiant earlier this year on Robert Venditti’s “X-o Manowar” as well as a few issues on Joshua Dysart’s “Harbinger” and will be the lead artist on Greg Pak’s “Eternal Warrior” when it arrives in September.
Hairsine isn’t the first creative talent to sign an exclusive deal with Valiant as he follows in the footsteps of both Cary Nord and Joshua Dysart. He went on to discuss he decision to make the deal with Valiant while speaking with Comic Book Resources.
“I just like it scrappy and small. I like being part of that battle. I’m trying not to be negative about it, but I just don’t think the corporatization of comics is a trend that really benefits us,...

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this March. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.8 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant pile of Christmas tinsel since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The first fill-in artist on Justice League, although Gene Ha is certainly no slouch in that department. We also have new writers on Firestorm and Green Arrow, new backups in Justice League and Action Comics, and the DC 52 hits lucky number 7.
Shall we see who is the fariest of them all? Oh indeedy, let’s do!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.
