Roadside Attractions has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Accidental Texan, made by storyboard artist / filmmaker Mark Lambert Bristol. Obviously enough, this originally premiered at the 2023 Dallas Film Festival last year, with a stop at the Heartland Film Festival in Indiana as well. Fresh-faced actor Erwin finds himself stranded in Texas after a film shoot gone wrong, where he's taken under the wing of a nearly bankrupt oil driller. They set off on a wild Texas adventure to outwit a corrupt oil company to hit pay dirt before Merle's dreams are foreclosed, partnering with a kind waitress along the way. "Something happened, and he came back as a different person." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for a crime thriller titled Kane from Australia, opening in the US soon this fall. Haven't heard much about this one, yet another mediocre crime thriller getting thrown into the "content" pile this year. Benny works for old school crime boss Abe, though Abe has multiple personalities and is in a gang war with the notorious Frankie. Kane is the deadliest of Abe's personalities, and the next 24 hours will be a killer. Today is a good day to die. "Kane is a gripping dark thriller that explores the blurred lines of loyalty and identity." The split personalities twist in this is so uninteresting, doesn't seem they know what to do with it. Kane stars Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, Jake Ryan, Clayton Watson, Nathan Phillips, Tammin Sursok, Holly Brisley, and Peter O'Hanlon as Big Stan.

Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City" will be available to stream very soon. The director, known for quirky comedies starring an endless rotation of his A-list actor friends, from Bill Murray to Tilda Swinton ("Moonrise Kingdom"), debuted his latest film in theaters in June. Now, audiences will be able to enjoy it from the comfort of their homes.
The full trailer for "Astroid City" dropped back on March 29, revealing the period comedy that takes place in a 1950s desert town about to be rocked by an otherworldly event that could change everything. The movie preview offered clues about the film's characters, with Scarlett Johansson taking on the role of a '50s-era movie star and Tom Hanks serving as the disapproving father of Jason Schwartzman's character's late wife (who dies three weeks before the movie starts). And, of course, the film features Anderson's trademark vibrant coloring and dry comedy.

‘Asteroid City‘ is directed by Wes Anderson and stars Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Hanks, among others.
This film is all about style, and more than just style: it’s a powerful statement of style that encapsulates a seemingly trivial yet insightful and intuitive message.
Some say that only fools like Wes Anderson, but I must confess that this retro fable about nothing has delighted me.
Movie Review
Just based on the visuals, the Looney Tunes-inspired treatment, the framing, and the entire parody of cinema within cinema, ‘Asteroid City’ is worth it. And when I say it’s worth it, I mean that you haven’t seen anything like it, including other films by the director. Whether we like it or not, the cinematography is daring, brutally stylish, and brilliant, in a way that only Wes Anderson can achieve.
Is Wes Anderson copying himself? Definitely, and Wes Anderson...

Wes Anderson’s latest film, Asteroid City, is now available to rent or buy on digital platforms, after just three weeks in theaters. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, is a metafictional comedy-drama set in a retro-futuristic version of the 1950s, where a TV host introduces a televised production of a play by famed playwright Conrad Earp (Edward Norton), depicting the events of a Junior Stargazer convention in a desert town.

Wes Anderson has always managed to conjure up so much joy and wonder in his films, from his early days to his most recent work. There’s always an element of childish imagination and wonder to his films that always helps you fall in love with the characters and the worlds. Beneath that style, however, has always been a maturity to his storytelling, a sense of heartache and subtle sadness that lingers through the colourful worlds. Asteroid City is like so much of Anderson’s previous work, it has the joy and wonder, it has the wonderful colour pallet and style we’ve come to expect and perhaps has deeper meanings and messages than in any of his previous work.

Summer movie blockbuster time is here! Tom Cruise and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” the seventh in the film franchise running since 1996, took over Rome for its premiere, while Harrison Ford, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and John Williams celebrated “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” in Hollywood — and not one of those Tinseltown Og’s used a walker to get around! In New York, Katie Holmes and Mick Jagger danced into the Abt ballet gala, and director Wes Anderson brought a horde of A-list stars to his “Asteroid City” premiere. The writers are still on strike, but everyone who’s anyone is traveling the world this summer to promote something!

Plot: In a remote desert town, Junior Stargazer’s convention attendees find themselves locked down after encountering an alien life-form.
Review: One has to assume that Wes Anderson‘s Asteroid City is a product of lockdown. Given that many of us spent months (or even years) of our lives isolated thanks to the pandemic, it’s inevitable that this would rub off on the work of some of our most accomplished directors. Asteroid City isn’t about the pandemic, but there are certainly moments that will resonate for all, although Anderson, as always, can’t resist defying expectations. The Junior Stargazer’s plot, which dominates the movie, is a film-within-a-film for Anderson, whose story is a lot more complicated than the early trailers revealed. The result is a bold effort it may take a few viewings to truly appreciate, as it was probably the first Wes Anderson movie I’ve...

Wes Anderson is among the most creative directors out there, a true auteur with a distinctive style. His films, including The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Fantasic Mr Fox, are often quirky, color-drenched, full of cultural references and even whimsical but also deeply human. While not everyone loves their unique style, he has many fans, including this writer. Anderson’s last film, The French Dispatch, was an anthology inspired by the New Yorker magazine, and while Anderson’s newest, Asteroid City, is not an anthology, it’s a story-within-a-story format evokes some of that as does its deadpan off-kilter comedy – but here with an Atomic Age slant, of 1950s candy colors,...

Here in 2023, we are all uncomfortably familiar with the notion of being trapped in quarantine. So it is entirely to Wes Anderson’s credit that his new feature Asteroid City looks back to the social constraints of post-’50s America and locks its cast in characters within characters – in a play within a documentary – then captures the central players in a fantastical desert quarantine and we still want to learn more.
Bryan Cranston is our tour guide through this convoluted journey as he brings the audience into a television show about Asteroid City, troubled playwright Conrad Earp’s (Edward Norton) latest production. Asteroid City explores the extraordinary goings-on in the quiet desert town of Asteroid City – previously famed for a tiny asteroid, a Huge crater, a road to nowhere and an annual Junior Stargazers’ Convention – and blooms the re-enactment from the constraints of Academy ratio into rich, dazzling widescreen colour.

Wes Anderson has once again recruited Jason Schwartzman for another one of his films. Over the past two decades, the pair have worked together several times, including on "Rushmore," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," and "Moonrise Kingdom." Now, Schwartzman is the star of Anderson's latest theatrical release, "Asteroid City," which premiered on June 16. The period film, which takes place during the 1950s, follows a group of gifted students and their parents who visit a desert town for the annual Junior Stargazer convention. During their stay, they experience a mysterious cosmic event together.
Schwartzman plays a war photographer named Augie Steenbeck, whose son, Woodrow (Jake Ryan), is a Junior Stargazer winner. Also making up the cast are Scarlett Johansson as actor Midge Campbell; Tom Hanks as Augie's father-in-law, Stanley Zak; Jeffrey Wright as the convention's host, General Grif Gibson; and Tilda Swinton as scientist Dr. Hickenlooper.

Focus Features’ press conference for Asteroid City began with writer/director Wes Anderson describing the inspiration for his most recent weirdly wonderful film. Asteroid City is one of the most Wes Anderson-ish of all Wes Anderson films, ranking right up there with The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom, and Anderson admitted that no one has specifically asked him where the idea came from.
Joining 10 of his film’s stars – Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody, Rupert Friend, Stephen Park, Hope Davis, Bryan Cranston, and Maya Hawke – for the virtual conference, Anderson revealed that he normally starts writing a script with a couple of ideas.
”I would say this one the three ideas were, one, Roman Coppola and I created this thing together. We wanted to write a part for Jason Schwartzman at the center of a movie that would be something he hadn’t done before.

Jake Ryan first met Wes Anderson when he was just seven years old and cast as one of the protagonist’s little brothers in Moonrise Kingdom, the filmmaker’s 2012 feature set at a summer camp — and the two’s work together has come a long way since then.
Over the years, they’ve kept in touch, with Anderson directing a 2012 stop-motion commercial for Sony that a young Ryan wrote, inviting Ryan to participate in conversations for Criterion Collection editions of his films, and casting Ryan a small part in the animated feature Isle of Dogs. But now, at 19, Ryan has his biggest role in an Anderson film to date.
In Asteroid City, Ryan plays Woodrow Steenbeck, an awkward teen and award winning “Junior Stargazer,” who arrives in the eponymous desert town with his morose father Augie (Jason Schwartzman) and three incorrigible little sisters. Woodrow, who recently lost his mom, is...

Big news in specialty this weekend as Asteroid City arrives in theaters with Wes Anderson and his army of fans behind it and a major marketing campaign by Focus Features. The director’s latest opens at six locations in New York and Los Angeles, where Focus has partnered with Landmark for the reopening of Sunset, the five-screen theater it took over from AMC early this year.
Others are the Angelika, Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn and AMC Lincoln Square in New York, and AMC Century City and Burbank in LA. The film, which premiered in Cannes last month (see Deadline review), will expand to around 1,500 runs next week.

A dryly comedic bricolage of mid-century Americana and postwar anxieties with only the lightest dusting of plot, the 1950s-set Asteroid City finds Wes Anderson moving even closer to cultural curation and further from sustained storytelling. Still, the filmmaker’s gift for wringing laughs out of absurdity played straight is matched by few. That much is clear from the moment he drops an assortment of characters into the remote, alien-obsessed desert town of Asteroid City, whose attributes—from its proximity to an atomic testing facility to the stiff-necked soldiers milling about—provide numerous opportunities for funny weirdness.
The closest that Asteroid City has to a protagonist is Augie Steenbeck (Jason Schwartzman), a somnolent war photographer whose wife died three weeks earlier. The man was too depressed to tell his kids about the loss until weeks later when a car breakdown strands the family in the titular city, where twin romances break...

Paris-based auteur Wes Anderson filmed his sci-fi comedy “Asteroid City” in Spain during the pandemic in 2021, but it embraced a 1955 American milieu. The well-reviewed movie offers Anderson’s usual sprawling ensemble — Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Bryan Cranston, Tom Hanks, Steve Carell, Margot Robbie, Tilda Swinton, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, and more — but it’s not the actors who will pop up with Oscar nominations. No one gets enough individual screen time.
Like Anderson’s most-lauded “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, “Asteroid City” will likely clean up with the crafts, and possibly, like “Moonrise Kingdom”, also nab a nod for Original Screenplay.
Written by Anderson and long-time screenwriting partner Roman Coppola, “Asteroid City” stars Schwartzman as avuncular writer Augie Steenbeck, typewriter and pipe in tow. He is bringing his whiz-kid scientist son Woodrow (“Eighth Grade” standout Jake Ryan) and three daughters to the Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention in the New Mexico desert,...

Some directors are afraid to leap beyond the box they're relegated to. Establish yourself in a certain way and the audience is bound to remember you as such for as long as you're worth remembering. When it comes to Wes Anderson, we all know him as the aesthetic auteur he has proven himself to be, but even he has had a hard time leaping from beyond the box over the years. But with his latest film, "Asteroid City," Anderson has opened himself up more than ever before to possibilities, and that, dear reader, makes even the most subtle differences shine. The result is a light and breezy aesthetic journey with a joyful heart that allows the audience to simply kick back and enjoy potentially one of Anderson's easiest watches yet — but not without the delight of some new and exciting approaches.

With apologies to Guns N’ Roses: Don’t take me down to the Asteroid City / Where the tropes are tired and the gags ain’t witty / Make it stop (Oh, won’t you please make it stop).
To clarify an important point upfront, I’m no Wes Anderson hater. I get that he’s the most parody-able of contemporary American directors, with his taste for painstakingly designed retro-theatrical artifice, for boxes within narrative boxes, for framing and camera movement choices identifiable from a mile away, characters that drip drolleries and plots that plunge fearlessly into manneristic preciousness. But when all the elements click into place, Anderson’s manicured worlds can be enchanting places to visit. Or they can be suffocating constructs that wring all the charm out of his signature storytelling style. Which brings us to Asteroid City.

As much as any filmmaker alive, Wes Anderson has a canon of movies that look and feel all of a piece. The diorama design, which extends from his life-size-dollhouse sets to his graphic lettering; the acting so stylized it’s like postmodern jokey-music-video kabuki; the fable-within-a-fable structure that can seem the cinematic equivalent of nested Russian dolls; the heavy frosting of ironic whimsicality. Most of his movies share these elements, yet the truth is that not all Wes Anderson film are alike. A few, like “The Royal Tenenbaums” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” spin finely wrought tales beneath the filigree. One, “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” is an exhilarating caper — as well as (to me) his finest work, ironically because it isn’t pretending to be about anything.
Then there are the Anderson films that even most of his fans don’t pretend to like all that much — the fussy, top-heavy, narratively...

Like any movie by Wes Anderson, “Asteroid City” is the epitome of a Wes Anderson movie. A film about a television program about a play within a play “about infinity and I don’t know what else” (as one character describes it), this delightfully profound desert charmer — by far the director’s best effort since “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and in some respects the most poignant thing he’s ever made — boasts all of his usual hallmarks and then some. A multi-tiered framing device, diorama-esque shot design, and Tilda Swinton affectlessly saying things like “I never had children, but sometimes I wonder if I wish I should have” are just some of the many signature flourishes that you might recognize from Anderson’s previous work and/or the endless parade of A.I.-generated TikToks that imitate his style.
