She can tell a killer joke, but don't let her sense of humor fool you, because Ashley Bell's unhinged character is quite deadly in Mickey Keating's new movie. Following a December theatrical release (including a screening that featured a Q&A hosted by our own Heather Wixson), Psychopaths will be unleashed on VOD beginning January 2nd by Samuel Goldwyn Films, and we've been provided with an exclusive clip featuring Bell's character, Alice, to share with Daily Dead readers.
Get a look at Ashley Bell's polite yet perilous role of Alice in the exclusive clip below (this is one character you don't want to upset), and in case you missed it, read our own Patrick Bromley's Cinepocalypse review of Psychopaths.

Filmmaker Mickey Keating, an indie-horror workhorse who churns out films quicker than SyFy and their Sharknado obsession, has even more updates out of South By Southwest on his new film, the simply-titled Psychopaths.
To this point, we know who the cast is comprised of, and it’s a venerable wealth of genre riches. As announced so far, actors include Mark Kassen, James Landry Hébert, Ivana Shein, Ashley Bell, Angela Trimbur, Jeremy Gardner, Helen Rogers, Graham Skipper, Matt Mercer, Sam Zimmerman, and Larry Fessenden. This is common knowledge, but what comes next is a little taste of the film’s body and soul.
While chatting with Keating about his SXSW Midnighter, Carnage Park, he let me know what to expect from Psychopaths:
…I wanted to make Psychopaths ultra-glamorous, and really colorful. All about composition and camera-movement as much as it’s about the characters. We looked to movies like Dressed To Kill,...

There are few story premises so perfect in their simplicity as "what do we do with this dead body?" It's a foundation for countless different outcomes. Do you call the cops? Do you hide the evidence? Do you try to frame someone else? Do you show it off? Do you pretend it never happened? Those and many more questions are the driving force behind the new indie thriller Body. It's out on Dgitial HD today and it's our pleasure to premiere a clip from the movie. But not just any clip! This is the moment when things start to really go south for three unlucky ladies (played by Helen Rogers, Alexandra Turshen, Lauren Molina). The holiday-themed flick has been playing select theatres for a few weeks, and is due to premiere on VOD on December 29th.Having seen the film at the 2015 Stanley Film Festival, I can attest that there are some squirmy scenes and a very icky-and-hilarious moment with genre stalwart Larry Fessenden, who plays the hapless caretaker. What starts off as a normal night becomes a pretty messed up situation when some co-eds (played by Helen Rogers, Alexandra Turshen, and Lauren Molina) get into much more trouble than they anticipated. Body
Written & Directed by Dan Berk & Robert Olsen
USA, 2015
Body is a taught psychological-thriller that doesn’t so much re-invent the ‘one crazy night’ genre so much as skew it for modern sensibilities. There aren’t any scares here, but Dan Berk and Robert Olsen deliver a treatise on self-absorption that is horrifying, nonetheless. It’s rare to find this level of rich subtext in such a modest genre picture. Lively and entertaining, Body is a nice change of pace if you’re looking for something slightly more sinister this holiday season.
It’s Christmas Eve, and Mel (Lauren Molina), Holly (Helen Rogers), and Cali (Alexandra Turshen) are back home from school and bored out of their minds. They’ve tortured their younger brother, titillated old boyfriends, and tormented their dorky parents. Now it’s time for some real fun! Cali has a rich uncle who lives out in the ‘burbs.

Three college-age women on holiday break decide to abandon a quiet evening of Scrabble and pot-smoking when party girl Cali (Alexandra Turshen) insist they crash at her rich uncle’s vacant McMansion. There they ring in Christmas Eve with golf cart joyrides and various other liquor-soaked shenanigans, until the suspect Holly (Helen Rogers) discovers they’ve actually broken into a stranger’s home, more specifically that of an Asian family Cali babysat for once upon a time. Before they can leave the scene of their innocent crime, they’re discovered by a groundskeeper (played by horror filmmaker, Larry Fessenden, who, based on his acting resume, loves a good victim role), and an ensuing scuffle leaves him prone and unresponsive at the bottom of the stairs. The story then shifts into a study of group power dynamics when the trio, with Cali as their dominating lead, decides to make the scene look like an attempted rape,...

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I should have known better than to even get my hopes up. At first I thought: hey, a suspense thriller about three young women who find themselves in trouble, and their friendship challenged, when Something Bad happens? Cool. Women’s friendships in dangerous situations are not something we see a lot of onscreen. But the writing-directing team of Dan Berk and Robert Olsen appear to have taken their supposition about how women might behave in their scenario from misogynist Internet trolls. Body is, in the meta sense, about the things that women (allegedly) do that scare men, and not so much about the female characters here themselves.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Oscilloscope Laboratories. **there are major spoilers in this review. Directors/writers: Dan Berk and Robert Olsen. Cast: Helen Rogers, Alexandra Turshen, Lauren Molina and Larry Fessenden. Directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen's Body is set for an upcoming December release. The film involves a girl's night out, that leads to violence. Full of tension and conflict, Body is a decent thriller, which asks a few moral questions. Unfortunately, the mostly amoral trio of female characters are unwilling to make the right decisions. This lack of morality leads to bigger and bigger problems. And, Body has some connections with recent news stories, at American universities. Here, feminist delusions over rape culture and false rape accusations seep into the film's narrative. Relevant and controversial, Body is an entertaining watch, with the film asking viewers how they would act. Parties often...

Glass Eye Pix and Alexander Groupe have just released the first trailer and poster for Darling, the new film by Mickey Keating, which will have its world premiere at the 11th edition of Fantastic Fest.
The psychological horror film follows a lonely young woman who moves into an old, mysterious Manhattan mansion. Hired as a caretaker, it’s not long before she discovers the estate’s haunted reputation and troubling past. These stories slowly transform into a backdrop for her twisted and violent descent into madness…
The trailer gives us a good idea of what to expect — Mickey Keating’s Darling is edited like a nightmare and scored like a hallucination by composer Giona Ostinelli, and word is, the film accomplishes terror of a completely different kind.
Darling stars Lauren Ashley Carter (Pod, Jug Face) with supporting performances by Brian Morvant, Sean Young, Larry Fessenden, John Speredakos, and Helen Rogers.

A trailer for the thriller the Body was released in early January. Now, an official poster is available, for this mysterious film. The graphic shows three women as the three wise monkeys (hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil). Each hovers above a corpse. And, the film will see release, in the United Kingdom, in October. As well, the film stars: Helen Rogers, Alexanadra Turshen and Lauren Molina. A preview for the film's looming launch is hosted here. The film takes place on Christmas Eve. On this day, three young women break into a wide estate. They enjoy everything the property has to offer, until a groundskeeper comes to investigate. Now, the mistletoe and eggnog is forgotten in favour of a brutal club and blood. Arthur (Larry Fessenden) likes his lawns well manicured and undisturbed. A North American release is scheduled for the Winter, Q4. A more specific...

Not all horror movies have ghosts or zombies or monsters or masked murderers hacking up teenagers. Sometimes, horror movies just find regular people in terrible circumstances and watch as things heat up, like ants put under a magnifying glass in the sun. That’s the case in Body, the feature debut from the writing/directing team of Dan Berk and Robert Olsen and a solid four character thriller and a welcome surprise this year.
Three friends, Holly (Helen Rogers), Mel (Lauren Molina) and Cali (Alexandra Turshen) are hanging out on Christmas Eve. They’ve eaten too much, they’ve smoked a little weed and now they’ve gotten bored. Cali suggests they go over to her rich uncle’s house, which is empty for the holidays. They head over and drink some more and goof around a little. Then a man (Larry Fessenden) shows up and surprises them. There is an accident.

Body sees three girlfriends head out for a wild night during the Christmas holidays, but their jaunt is about to turn deadly. Cali suggests they crash her rich uncle’s mansion since he’s out of town and soon they’re partying the night away. However there’s something Cali hasn’t told her BFFs – namely that they’ve actually jut broken into the place without permission! Soon their part is rumbled by the mansion’s groundskeeper (played by modern horror cinemas equivalent of Christopher Lee, one Mr. Larry Fessenden) who takes a dive down the stairs at the hands of one of the girls. Soon the fear of possible reprisals finds the terrified trio embarking on a course of action from which there is no return.

We’re going back to the Overlook Hotel! Okay fine, it’s technically one of the three “Overlook Hotels” related to Stephen King’s classic novel, The Shining, but for our money it’s the coolest due largely to the Stanley Film Fest. This year’s fest will be its third incarnation after debuting in 2013. We attended and loved that inaugural weekend, and while we missed last year’s festivities their latest announcement has us excited to return to Estes, Co later this month. The lineup includes twenty feature films consisting of festival favorites (The Final Girls, The Treatment, The Invitation, Deathgasm and We Are Still Here to name a few) and three world premieres (Sun Choke, Some Kind of Hate and the highly intriguing-sounding Director’s Commentary: The Terror of Frankenstein). They’re also screening five older films including the likes of David Cronenberg’s Shivers, Roman Polanski’s Repulsion and the eternally awesome Re-Animator which...

The thriller genre is certainly not short on movies in which the plot revolves around hiding a body, but for a directorial debut, co-writers and co-directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen have chosen an appropriately low-stakes premise in which to get their feature film feet wet. And as such, you couldn't be blamed for lowering your expectations for "Body," which doesn't reinvent the wheel, nor strive to. Instead, Berk and Olsen seem happy enough to try and simply execute the tale, told within a very familiar milieu, and thanks to some good performances, and a keen sense of storytelling economy, they get they job done in wholly satisfactorily, if not blazingly original, manner. Right off the bat, thriller or horror fans hoping to get to the good stuff might be put off by the slow burn. In fact, we don't get to the body until at least a good third or so into the movie,...

2014 was a solid year for indie horror and thrillers and if the trailer for Dan Berk and Robert Olsen's Body is any indication, 2015 may just well deliver more genre goodness from the indie world.
Starring Helen Rogers, Alexandra Turshen, Lauren Molina, and indie godfather Larry Fessenden, Olsen and Berk's horror movie unfolds as a trio of young women break into a mansion, kill the groundskeeper and then drive each other mad trying to figure out what to do with the body. Admittedly, that didn't all come through in the moody and wordless teaser but Slamdance, where the movie will have its premiere, has all the goods.

While the Sundance Film Festival is the better known film festival located in Utah that runs in January, it is not the only one, as the Slamdance Film Festival has been running in the same place during the same month for over 20 years. The Sundance Film Festival dominates Park City in late January, but there is also the upstart Slamdance Film Festival. We’ve not really highlighted that fest or its program, but I always stay at Treasure Mountain Inn where Slamdance is headquartered and they’ve kind of grown on me. Last year they brought Christopher Nolan to speak (the fest had the good sense to program his first film) and Joe Mangianello came to vamp his male stripper docu. This year, there’s every chance of seeing Dennis Rodman, the flamboyant former rebounding machine and Bff of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for the docu Dennis Rodman’s Big Bang In Pyongyang. So let’s all root for an international incident! Here are the films they’ll be playing from January 23-29:
